One of our members is posting translations of a Chinese web novel in NSFW CW and asking users to subscribe to his Patreon for more chapters. Genuine question - doesn't this fall under rule three for piracy? This feels... kind of skeevy.
 
Posting translations of foreign works on the Internet is routine among translators and, mostly, legally unproblematic. This holds unless the work has been officially licensed for release in English, which almost never happens for Chinese webnovels as of now.

If someone is posting translations of a work for which there are official translations available, that's a copyright issue. Until then, there's not really a problem.
 
I had a similar question, if I started translating an unlicensed Japanese WN that already has an LN release but no official or fan translations, it wouldn't fall under rule 3, would it?
