Basically, there’s two other primary subspecies of the syphilis bacteria, which cause diseases called bejel and yaws, that are skin diseases. There’s actually a question whether or not they’re even subspecies or if it’s all just strains. Either way, the point is that the most likely explanations - and I do mean explanations, because that’s regardless of whether it’s an old world or new world illness - are that syphilis started as non-venereal human disease, not an animal disease.
