Falling.

Mori Jin was falling.

Plummeting through the sky like a dying star, wrapped within a blazing cocoon of fire that scorched the heavens around him. The winds screamed past his body at terminal velocity, yet even that deafening roar was nothing compared to the storm raging within his heart.

He had failed.

Failed everyone.

The thought echoed endlessly through his mind, cruel and relentless, striking harder than any blow he had ever received in battle.

He was the strongest god.

No.

He was more than that.

He was the Supreme God of the universe itself, the being who stood at the pinnacle of existence, the one whose power dwarfed kings, monsters, gods, and demons alike.

And yet...

It meant nothing.

Absolutely nothing.

What was the point of possessing power that could shake worlds when he couldn't save the people he loved?

What was the point of being a god when those precious to him could still be taken away?

"Why?" he thought bitterly as agony twisted through his chest. "Why do I have all this power... and still couldn't protect them?"

His hands trembled.

The answer appeared in his mind immediately.

Mubong.

The very name ignited a furnace of hatred within him.

A savage snarl tore across Mori's face."That bastard."The flames surrounding him surged violently in response to his fury.

"How dare he!"The roar exploded from his throat, shaking the air around him.

How dare Mubong betray them after everything they had done?

How dare he betray humanity?

How dare he betray the people who had bled and suffered to save the world?

Mori's blood boiled hotter than the inferno encasing him.

They had fought for humanity.

Risked everything for humanity.

They had marched into a war against the gods themselves and somehow emerged victorious.

Against impossible odds.

Against divine armies.

Against fate itself.

And after all of that...

Mubong had still betrayed them.

The memory felt as fresh as an open wound.

He would remember it for the rest of his immortal life.

The way Mubong smiled.

The way he mocked them.

The way he looked down on them with that self-righteous expression while wielding the Holy Grail.

Mori could still hear every word.

Still see every movement.

Still feel the moment the Holy Grail's power wrapped around him and began sealing away his strength.

What made the betrayal even worse was the fact that he should have seen it coming.

He possessed the Eyes of Truth.

Eyes capable of seeing through illusions.

Through hallucinations.

Through deception.

Through trickery.

Through lies.

They allowed him to understand every language, perceive energies beyond mortal comprehension, and expose falsehoods for what they truly were.

And yet...

Mubong had still fooled him.

Apparently, lying by omission wasn't enough to trigger his eyes.

A bitter laugh almost escaped him.

How pathetic.

Fresh tears welled within his crimson eyes.

Pain.

Grief.

Rage.

Hatred.

All of it spilled forth at once.

The tears streamed down his face as another scream ripped from his throat.

The Holy Grail was still sealing his power.

It hurt.

God, it hurt.

The pain was indescribable.

It felt as though every fiber of his existence was being ripped apart and rewritten.

Nothing listened to him anymore.

Geundoowun remained silent.

Yeoui would not answer.

Even Yongpyo gave him no response.

The companions that had never abandoned him before were gone.

Silenced.

Separated from him by the Grail's curse.

And all the while he continued falling.

Closer.

Closer.

Closer to the earth below.

The ground looked impossibly distant and terrifyingly near at the same time.

Maybe...Maybe he should stop fighting.

The intrusice thought came silently.

Maybe he should simply let go.

Maybe he should disappear.

Maybe-

"Giving up, Wukong?"The voice cut through his despair like a ray of sunlight piercing storm clouds."That's not like you at all."

Mori's eyes snapped open.

His heart nearly stopped.

Standing beyond the wall of flames was a woman.

A beautiful woman.

Long brown hair flowed gently around her shoulders.Dark brown eyes met his own, their golden pupils mirroring his.She wore elegant traditional robes, the fabric swaying despite the impossible surroundings. A transparent scarf framed her face, its red-lined edges fluttering softly.

A face he had never forgotten. One that he had mourned for billions of years.

Tang Sanzang.

Xuanzang.

The woman he had loved when he was still Sun Wukong.

Back when he was the Great Sage Equal to Heaven. When he had journeyed west alongside her and his sworn brothers. When he had been a violent, arrogant monkey who believed strength was the answer to everything.

She had changed him.

She had looked beyond the monster.

Beyond the warrior.

Beyond the legend.

She had seen someone worth loving.

And somehow...She had loved him.

The memory hurt more than any wound.

Their journey had ended in tragedy.

The revelation that Xuanzang was Gaia's chosen prophet.

The discovery that bringing her west had been nothing more than a trap.

Tathagata had desired the power hidden within her flesh.

He had wanted to devour her.

To consume her existence.

To steal her gift.

Mori remembered every second.

Remembered desperately trying to protect her.

Remembered Buddha forcing him to watch the slaughter of Zhu Bajie and Sha Wujing.

Remembered the blood.

The screams.

The helplessness.

Most of all...

He remembered Xuanzang's final request.

Her final sacrifice.

Her final act of love.

She had made him devour her.

Made him consume her flesh so he could inherit the Prophet's power.

So he could kill Tathagata.

He had obeyed.

Because she asked.Because he loved her and there had been no other choice.

And then, after all of that...The Jade Emperor had killed him.

Everything had ended.

Everything had been lost.

Yet here she was.

After 5.67 billion years.

Standing before him once more.

Why now?

Why here?

Why when he was broken?

Why when he was dying?

Mori tried to speak.

Tried to call her name. To reach out.

His hand stretched forward through the flames.

But the pain prevented any words from escaping.

Xuanzang simply smiled sadly."Don't dwell on the past, Wukong."Her voice remained gentle.

Firm.

Steady.

"Remember what your grandfather told you."

The words struck him like lightning.

Instantly another memory surfaced.

Teajin Jin.

His grandfather.

The man who had raised him who had loved him.who had died for him.

Mori could still see Mubong's arm punching through Teajin's body.

Still see the blood and smile his grandfather somehow managed despite the mortal wound.

Still hear those final words."Mori... please live..."The old man's voice echoed through his soul."...and don't hate people too much."Then he had died.

Smiling.

Gone forever.

His only family.

The only father figure he had ever truly known.

Taken from him while he stood powerless to stop it.

Mori's eyes widened.

Those words.

How had he forgotten them?

His grandfather's final wish.

His final plea.

To live.

Yet here Mori was, ready to throw his life away.

Ready to abandon the very thing Teajin had died asking him to do.

Shame burned hotter than the flames surrounding him.

How dare he?

How dare he consider surrender?

How dare he dishonor his grandfather's final wish?

His teeth clenched.

Blood dripped from his gums.

Pain coursed through every nerve.

But alongside it came something else.

Determination.

Pure.

Unyielding.

Absolute.

He would live.

No matter what.

He would survive.

For Teajin.

For Xuanzang.

For everyone he had lost.

Xuanzang's smile brightened.

Pride flickered in her eyes."I knew you'd pull through, Wukong."

Then her expression became serious. "But before you fall, die, and reincarnate yet again... I'm here to offer you an accord."The Prophet said Ominously

Confusion flashed across Mori's face.

An accord?

Xuanzang nodded.

"Another world needs you."

Her voice carried urgency now.

Desperation.

"A world on the verge of collapse."

Mori frowned.

Another world?

Like the Sage Realm?

Like Heaven?

What could he possibly do?

He had no power.

No strength.

Nothing left.

As if reading his thoughts, Xuanzang continued."I can restore everything."

Mori froze.

"I can return your lost power."

His eyes widened.

"I can repair the damage caused by your battle with Satan."

His breath caught.

"I can restore your body."

The flames around him trembled.

"I can repair your gourd bottle."

Hope surged through him despite himself.

"And when it's done..."

Xuanzang's gaze locked onto his.

"You will stand once more as the Supreme God."

The earth rushed closer.

Seconds remained.

Perhaps less.

Another wave of agony exploded through his body.

A primal scream escaped his throat.

His vision blurred.

His consciousness flickered.

He didn't have time.

There was only one answer.

"Fine!"

The scream existed only within his mind.

"I'll do it! Just make it stop!"

The instant the decision was made, darkness rushed toward him.

His vision faded.

The pain consumed everything.

And the final thing Mori Jin saw before unconsciousness claimed him was Xuanzang's sad smile.

Then there was nothing.

Far below, in another universe entirely, in a city called Brockton Bay, a flash of light appeared within a filthy alleyway hidden between crumbling buildings.

The city itself was a rotting wound on the northeastern coast of America.

Crime infested every street.

Gangs ruled entire districts.

The ABB spread its influence through violence and fear beneath the leadership of Lung.

Empire Eighty-Eight poisoned neighborhoods with hatred and supremacy.

The Merchants drowned entire communities in drugs and chaos.

The heroes fought.

The villains fought harder.

And ordinary people were crushed somewhere between them.

The city was dying.

Most simply hadn't realized it yet.

No one noticed the unconscious young man who landed silently within that forgotten alley.

No one knew who he was.

No one knew what he had survived.

And certainly no one knew that the sleeping figure lying among the garbage and broken concrete would soon alter the very foundations of Earth Bet itself.
