Deep within the bowels of the jungle, beyond the reach of even the dimmest glimmer of early morning sunlight, there was a small mound of slowly rippling hides and furs. As the morning sun rose higher it began to shine through dappled foliage, and the mound began spreading out into individuals as they woke up.
Life has begun in the forest depths.
It's a very simple, slow sort of life- The 'Family' was made up of the litters of two sisters, who'd found that sticking together was a better survival strategy than going their own ways, like the rest of their own litter. The children, now approaching two years old themselves, were beginning their own adolescence- A couple playfully romping through the trees, even as the rest began their careful morning grooming.
This is an important stage in their lives- Where before they were simply provided for, now their mothers will begin teaching them how to live on their own in this hostile, treacherous world that they inhabit.

I can't get the image of a bunch of scared raiders huddled in a group with a pride of Catgirls surrounding and looking down on them from the trees while carrying baskets full of throwing spears on their backs out of my head.

People just don't get the whole... civilizations develop in baby steps... it's because you try to force them to skip steps that we got permanently naked Oni last time.
The first tool would be learning that you can bash with sticks and rocks, then breaking a rock for sharp edges and throwing them. So first things first, seeing what's locally available, you have to know what exists before you can use it.

You can assume all you want, that does not in fact mean that a caveman knows what to do with the damn things and you can just force them to go EUREKA and instantly know a thing, first you have to find out that a stick/rock is heavy.
