Video Games General

@Rivan9000 I blame you for this. I just restarted Marvel Midnight Sun and I'm going to post about it.

So lets get ready commander.

Midnight suns is a game made by Firaxis of Xcom 2 fame . You control a team of 3 superheroes, using cards /resources/combo to beat up hordes of minions, stronger minions, and irritating enemies. And best of all you get a more stable version of the Xcom2 engine with a decade + of experience of game design going into it. I've already beaten it years ago so I'm going with Dreadheart Overhaul to spice things up. I do suggest considering considering trying the game with this mod even as a first timer since it gets going a lot faster, but a lot of the careful low level balance is lost for the faster more impactful overhaul.

But lets start the game. and I'll explain on the way. And naturally we start with game difficulty

4FEAFC6CD2A19385486631A7E28D32FA95B95451

The difficulty scales all the way up to Ultimate 4 or but it's basically just making the enemey spongy nukes.

I'm a bit of a casual so I'm starting with story (also my mod makes the game much more difficult), but there's an important thing about difficulty you have to know . Namely that it's entirely expected that you'll increase the difficulty as it gets too easy and ramp it down if it gets too difficult. In fact I hesitate to say that there's a true difficulty because you can't really lose the campaign. Failing a mission forces you to restart or reload the encounter. So your heroes never die and can never be permanently injured.

But having chosen the easiest mode lets go with actually starting the game. That said I'll keep images in spoilers since a lot of the fun is being surprised by the writing, which for a superhero marvel product is quite good, understated and consistently has nuance

Big Talk, Big boned , he is XBONES!
So the story starts with the evil guys unearthing Lilith and being taken over. And one of the first thing you'll find is that for all it's simplicity and cheapness, the voice acting is really really good. It's consistent , in character, and just a joy to listen to.

But after this short cutscene we actually get to the tutorial , and our first 3 heroes

A5DBCA81D7960EB6590F2654DC4D13BD9A05353F

AF0E8EC16ADA31FF49A39990D7D15C8FC0914658
Now Before I start I just want to say I love the title cards introducing each hero. It's great, funny, brings a smile to my face. Unfortunately you only get to see it for a few seconds before the story and or missions resumes. And in this case the first of hours fo piecemeal tutorial.

I'm being a bit dishonest because I've already beaten the game so I just want to skip the tutorial, but it took hours to get through most of the tutorials. But lets start with how combat works and I'll spoil all the other combat tutorial here.

The core is that every round you have 3 Card Play with which you... can play 3 cards . The cards are randomly selected from all heroes in the fight, and when played the hero associated with the card takes action. And unlike Xcom each card will always work, do the same exact amount of heals /damage, and can target anyone. The only time you need to care about your position is when dealing with AOE affect or when you attempt to defenstrate someone. And my god once you get rolling, generating and spending heroism(heroism is a resource) to power your combos and pushing the limit of hte hero and you'll feel like for a moment that it's the hero right in front of you. The mod I'm using takes it up one step further by making everything tankier so it's more noticeable what happens when you perfect combo a hero. Note that a key problem is that in base MMS you'll eventually trend towards 1 turn field wipe. so some heroes are just weaker because they scale up over time and ... well you're going to win much faster than that.

But back to combat, you also have generic moves like move, redraw (1 card) and a couple of other things you'll get access to as the game goes on. But critically none of these can consistently do damage. That said you'll find that different heroes and comp uses these generics in differnet ways as well so there's a lot of depth with even such a small amount of things you can do.

Enemies OTOH can be seperated into fodder and actually dangerous. Fodder enemies are 1HP enemies that do Normal damage. Actually dangerous enemies have gimmicks , more health, and some increase in damage compared to fodder. So you need to balance lasering half the field or concentrating multiple salvo's of missile on a single target.

With that done lets talk about the writing. It's surprisingly good.

I'll post only 2 lines that you'll see right before character creation (yes you need 30-60 min from initial start game to making your characters), but I'll post my thoughts on most story beats in a seperated Spoilered post because it's good enough to deserve an oppurtunity for people to experience for themselves.

For context after the tutorial, the big bad successfully put Doctor Strange into the homeless census, cursed to hellish streets of NYC. He heads to Caretaker (the old woman) to resurrect the chosen one that killed Lilith the first time, Hunter, a blank slate hero stand in for the player. And these 2 lines represent things that are active well into their storylines and character arcs of Strange and Caretaker.

Strange has a mild character flaw in that he disregards the human element and focus on the core objective when he's locked in and under pressure. He is doing what needs to be done, and he accidentally dehumanize the people around him. That doesn't mean he doesn't care, but he knows that he is abrasive in this respect.

Caretaker OTOH has loss issue. You won't find it right now, but an hour in you figure out that she lost her lower/life companion, her sister Lilith, her nephew (us) and so on. Us getting resurrected is like opening a sore would into someone who thought that the prophecy was already fulfilled. She'll get better at handling losing everything. Practice makes perfect.

4 hours in and a lot of the writing is good. It's not revolutionary but as kinda co-workers/ teammates it drops a lot of tidbits where people have mild insecurities that feel realistic and that as you get a better friendship level you get access to more core things with the character. Most of these scenes are very lovel. And are incredibly based/flirty. For example

"I like you hunter, because you know when to say nothing"
"Really?"
"Don't do it "
"So you want me to say nothing"
"You're the worst"
"And you're the best. That's why we make a great team"

MY GOD LET THEM KISS ALREADY !!!

"You may not like it, but this is what peak performance looks like."

NTE's pretty bland so far, but a fun ride with a lot of options and minigames and sidequests... one of which features this beauty. I love her, she's mine now :D

It's a Game Inspired by both Shadow of the Colossus and those Real World colossi, industrial equipment like the bucket excavators or mega dumptrucks.

I'm not completely sold on the art style.

Reminds me too much of those Mario in Unreal Engine memes, where they render the pores of his skin.

So I just beat act 1 of Marvel Midnight suns. Going to try another gameplay overhaul mod to see if I like it better than the one I'm using. the power fantasy is really nice but the many many many cards per round feels weird compared to what I was used to. That said it makes sense since the hydra minions are technically mini hulks....shit I jsut realized how they got it.

That said Act 1 did something that I found funny. It had a much much better (TRAITOR!!!) storyline for something that can't really innovate. The actual traitor, how the emotions are communicated, and how dangerous he is just generally has more pressure than say Mysterio in Far from Home, the spidey movie that came out just about when this game was developed.

Truly the 2k Writers knew what they were doing even when ... wait.... WHY CAN"T WE GET THIS STORYLINE IN THE MOVIES!?

IS the holywood/video game divide too big?

Edit: Going to story rant to talk about spoilers. Not gonna spoil it here.

ye olden smite was a magical place, where an ephemeral term like 'balance' had no meaning. in old smite, stone of gaia healed 4% hp per second. per second lol.

hercules' old 3 recorded damage and would return 90% of taken damage after 4 or so seconds. 90%.

stone of gaia on hercules literally made him capable of face tanking 1v5s every goddamn time. and if you had any sort of mechanical skill (high silver low gold) then you could win. reliably.

telkhine's ring on fast melee dps characters was another busted as shit item. slap it on ao kuang and as long as you held basic attack trigger, and hit, you could not die. i miss those days. there is a certain magic to jank.

So if I am to beliee what someone said, the Star Fox Direct started a furry civil war on Twitter/X.

Hilarious.
Everything above the waist looks fine to me, but Fox just straight up has Fire Emblem Awakening feet lol.

I get that they're trying to go for "realism" with the digitigrade legs, but there's no avoiding that it just looks kind of weird for Star Fox when everyone had human feet for so long.

Peppy and Slippy look fine. I can see what they were going for with Fox but it makes him look weirdly disproportionate, like an actual fox got shoved into some pants but then they grafted hands onto him and it's a mix of cartoony and realistic that looks a bit odd.

Falco looks kinda like one of the Tengu Warriors from the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers movie only he's stolen his legs from a parakeet.

Any Warframe players seen the new Jade Shadows:Constellations trailer?
has it been announced yet if orion and sirius are two separate frames or another equinox? i'm more of an abilities simp, so without actual gameplay, i can't really say. the protoframes for ash and garuda look sick. ash is getting some kind of touch up on his 4 is what i heard. good. that shit sucks.

So Nine Sols has been added to the PSN catalogue, a 2D Soulslike made by the same studio that gave us Detention and Devotion (both horror games taking place in Taiwan) where you play as a cat-alien bent on killing his superior for a variety of reasons.

I'm about halfway through, I think? I'm on my way to the red battle-lunatic Jiangso-something, his area is a pain in the ass to navigate. Gameplay is mostly Metroidvania with a dash of Soulsborne. You explore and gradually unlock new abilities, including important things like air dash and charged strike. In fact, I strongly recommend backtracking and exploring new areas once you unlock new abilities like I did. Cuz the first real boss, a cyber-centaur of some kind, was kicking my ass. Doing so allowed me to find a vendor for expanding my HP-bar and exp to improve damage output and all that.

When you die, you get respawned at the last rest spot you interacted with and have the opportunity to reclaim whatever cash and exp you lost by going back and killing the one that defeated you.

All in all, it's a fun little game, I can recommend it. I also like the potential for fanfiction such as Humanity recreating Solarians through genetic manipulation and ending up in a mirror of what the Sonarians did to them with the Sols's souls ending up in their clone bodies, aware of their past. How they deal with this and how things develop from here, that'd be fun to read!

Yeah, not a fan either. Like, Star Fox Adventure and Starlink: BfA had the perfect art-style, no need to change that. And then they go and change it anyway.

The game really is great. My friend recommended it to me after I finished playing Sekiro and wanted more parry based combat.

A stray recommendation, but The Surge 2 is parry focused as well. It does a four directional parry system with an optional implant to turn the parry indicator off if you wish to raw dog it. IMO I like the og better for stylistic and story reasons, but the Surge 2 is still fun.

the poker minigame in watch dogs is so oddly addicting, once you get into a roll. the ai in most of the low and mid end seem extremely hesitant to go all-in, to the point you can farm money by going all-in every round. best part is watching npc stress level go from 13% to max as they shovel money into your pockets.

So I'm working through midnight suns.

I like that Blade respects Spider-Man. Also everyone is getting to see the Bugle hit pieces.

Me thinks that the wider superhero community is going to start getting a sour view on James Jonah Jameson.

Edit: also I can pet demon dog. 10/10.
