Video Games General

For some reason I got the urge to play Sonic Adventure this weekend so I did that and 100% completed the story mode in about 10 hours. It really shows its age, unsurprisingly considering it was Sonic Team's first 3D outing, but it was still a pretty fun time. Except for Big's levels. Fuck that stupid cat and his awful fishing minigame.

I remembered watching some videos about a mod that basically crosses over X-files with X-Com and wondered if there's any squad games which start with a SWAT team dealing with the supernatural, starting off unprepared about learning that the supernatural is real, and then in guns blazing.

The X Com third person shooter?
Ugh, that was a turd alright. The initial idea was interesting, but then something changed because they went with no missions management whatsoever, just a plot on rails with some side jobs.

The base exploration for some funny scenes was kinda alright, on a side note.

So Doom Dark Age or whatever it was called is a lot of fun. It feels like a nice middle ground speedwise between 2016's speed and Eternal's cokefiend blitz. The weapons are all a blast too. It's also interesting to see the demons fighting like a semi-organized force rather than a horde of insane monsters too. They've got formations, do some group fighting, have actual leadership and all that.

Possibly reflecting that, they did go with quantity of enemies over quality. Cannon fodder enemies like imps and zombie soldiers die really easy but there's a lot of them.

That is like returning to the roots of Doom though.
By a lot of them, I mean in some of the big fights against leader demons there can be somewhere between 50 to 100 fodder demons and a few bigger ones in the arena with you. They're usually spread out and the plain old zombies are more akin to a mousetrap that slowly drifts towards you than an actual threat but they're all there.

Ok so I loaded up Hollow Knight for the first time and I found out that some insane mad-lads mad a voice mod for the thing!

And so far it's decent! And they have the bosses say their dream nail lines. Not that far in but man this has put a nice bit of life into the game.

As an aside I'm looking for good indies. Metroidvanias and rpgs mostly. Any Recs?

Not sure if they'd class as indies, but metroidvania recommends?
Pseudoregalia, Touhou Luna nights, metal unit, salt&sanctuary, ender lilies, ender magnolia, awaken astral blade, sundered indivisible
..aaand I'm all out of ideas..

I also highly recommend Pseudoregalia and Touhou Luna Nights, as well as TEVI. And if you like old school dungeon crawlers similar to the early SMT games, Touhou Artificial Dream in Arcadia is a great pick.

I like all those things! Mostly I'm game for anything except jumpscare horror.

Cool I will check those out.

Well hades for sure is a good pick!

I'll throw in two more if you want a bit of an anime bent. Touhou: Luna Nights and Record of Lodoss War: Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth. Both are great metroidvanias with solid combat and massive respect for their settings. Luna Nights manages to replicate the danmakyu playstyle of the Touhou Project and Wonder Labyrinth is all but a officially cannonized entry in the legendary fantasy series.

Record of Lodoss War: Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth

I can second this one! I forgot about it. Plays a lot like Symphony of the Night, and it's even better if you're a fan of Lodoss War so you know who all these people are :p

Lodoss War was one of my first few anime, when that meant bin-diving at used book stores to find something affordable.

I had a good time with Salt and Sanctuary.

Dunno if it counts as 'Indie' but there's the Blaster Master remake and sequels.
Sequels? What sequels? There is only one sequel that I remember.

Third game? Nah, it doesn't exist.

Yes, I know this is sarcasm, but fuck Jason getting the Gunvolt treatment in the plot. I reject the third game's existence.

Edit: Otherwise, for Metroidvanias, I heavily recommend Ender Lillies. Ender Magnolia may have better gameplay, but Lillies has superior atmosphere and setting to me.

What the hell with Inti Creates and the third numbered entry in their franchise being ass in the story department

Eh, I have problems with BM0 2's plot, as well.

Is it too much to just let Jason (or any of your protags, really) have a unambiguous win, especially if they have to go through hell first?
