Shirts tucked into jeans. Legitimate fashion choice/protection from spiders or midlife crisis-provoking disaster?

You decide.

I'll never do it because I find jeans uncomfortable, but I don't see anything wrong with doing it.

Into a pair of trousers, sure.
But jeans? Not a chance.

If walking around and on my own time? No. If at work? Sure. There's jobs out there where you don't want extra hanging fabric because it'll get wet/catch fire/get caught in machinery.

I've seen people wearing button down shirts or white undershirts tucked into jeans and never thought it was unusual.

Where is the "who cares" option?

I mean, I have to be cajoled into wearing anything other than t-shirt/tracksuit pants/optional soft jumper/jacket and walk around the house naked. I care very little about fashion.

Jeans plus belt, wear button up collared shirt, tuck in shirt, then untuck far enough to cover belt. Business casual with jeans achieved. Buy three pairs of decent jeans, six undershirts, three button up shirts, one belt. With proper cycling of shirts, you'll never need another outfit for the rest of your life.

then again, I'm from the Midwest so ~shrug~

I-is it considered a bad thing?

I always do that for my undershirt but for other forms of wear?
