What power system should I use for a Worm story?

I need help pick a power system to use for a Worm fic.

All I got so far for suggestions is Inspired Inventor.

Though there is Waifu catalog, one of the celestials (Forage, Grimoire, and ménagère), a CYOA, or maybe even a gamer fic (Haven't seen a new one in a long while).

What do you all think is a good one?

Honestly I haven't seen many gamer fics at all lately, or at least ones that actually keep going after the first post.

Just went looking, and on this site the last one posted was in July of last year. The latest updated one posted in August of last year… so its been a good while since anyone has posted a gamer Worm fic.

Mostly been replaced with WC, and Celestial fics… hm….

Here's a radical idea: just have your character undergo a trigger event. Traumatize your MC, and come up with something useful.

I'd go with something that hasn't been done before or at least hasn't been done to death.

Perhaps the system from Runelords (Fantasy series by David Farland).
Don't remember all the details off the top of my head but in short the so called Runelords are nobles that brand people with tattoos that take a large portion of different things from them awarding it to the Runelord. Strength, speed and such.
Considering no sane person would want to be branded with something that weakens them without a lot of money or being forced I could imagine it playing out enough like a gamer fic for government work with Skitter or whoever beating up then branding criminals becoming stronger, while the obvious difference in methology may draw more readers than otherwise.

Like, the obvious synthesis is that the protagonist goes through a "normal" trigger event and gets a system-based power out of it: thats how The Most Dangerous Gamer did it.

One of the most important story-structural implications is that Systems start out relatively weak but generally escalate in power pretty rapidly, so a lot of narrative tension comes from the protagonist trying to stay on the Level Up Treadmill while getting distracted by problems and having a dilemma of letting problems get worse while they also get more powerful; but conversely a more normal Worm-type Power doesnt get any stronger, so the story is just about going out and having adventures directly.

Well, the other thing about system-fics is Power Fantasy, but honestly you might as well just do a Too Much Of A Good Thing scenario where the protagonist awakes an ability so strong the opening chapter is them squishing the S9 like bugs, and then navigating everybody and their cousin wanting a piece of them.

I feel bad for everyone in a story with an god like protagonists, probably too much political bs for my tastes.

if your still looking for options, you could always take a normal system and put a limit on it. A tinker who can build anything but his tech is like playing Russian roulette, small tech successfully works more often than endbringer death laser. You can even roll your own dice to make massive changes happen, like the death laser actually working.

Or you can go for a changer who can turn into others and use their power. Turn into a tinker and build gear, then turn into lung and wreck stuff up.

Ok I'm posting again way too soon but you could always make a gray character with Bioengineering and Neurochemistry. Nilbog meets Heartbreaker by way of Bonesaw. Go crazy with a very dark power, be the best villain, or do the impossible and try to be a hero in the same city as director piggot.

The tinker idea is literally just Uber and L33T's thing, though not a bad ideas.

And I am still trying to pick one, a good few posted here are great.

Highest in my opinion is a gamer fic, only because it's something I could do, and because it's become very underused. 'on this site at least for Worm'

Honestly, I think it would be interesting to explore a Gamer system that has an explicit level cap, so the main character is trying to minmax inside a limited power ceiling.

Another idea might be they Trigger with a "Game Master" ability where they can assign Gamer Systems to other people, constrained to certain Classes, which implicitly would probably be useful-but-not-worldshaking compared to similar meta-powers. That could be an interesting spin, force Plots to happen because everyone is trying to get a Class.

In the Lt Ouroumov's Worm CYOA, that's a feature for the gamer system there, as the shard as issues when you gain too much levels so it has a cap.

In the same cyoa you can be a theater master and force others into roles. Turn Alexandra into a damsel and she has to act like one, or make some random citizen a knight in shining armor. That's the closest I've seen for what you're looking for. Your also able to empower them with a power with certain upgrades.

Ohhhh, that's a good one.

Reminds me of one of dark wolf Shiro's stories. It's called 'the game master' also based in Worm, though it's more all games/dnd/pathfinder based.
