Applying "black myth" to "journey to the west" is a pleonasm, as the original text laid grounds for a dark or twisted world; "the world is lacking, it will eventually end and collapse", "longevity does not mean immortality", "gods and demons both desire more lifespan, why else would they eat sanzang or the heavenly peaches", etc etc etc

Like even Sha Wujing, one of the disciples, other than eating regular humans which is common for demons as that's how they grow stronger, in the original text, the beads around his neck are actually made of the skulls of sanzang's nine reincarnations, like he go to the journey every hundred years, and before this time all the other times he had killed and eaten, and his skull would be made into a magic artifact

They might know that the Landlord and Landlady in Kung Fu Hustle are named Yang Guo and Xiao Longnv, after the Return of the Condor Heroes protagonists, and they might even know they are based off of an old show about a ruthless landlady, but they probably don't know that

In me2 he actually regresses a bit and I'd argue he's really only good if you romance him, then he really shines in that game. Me3 feels like his wibbly wobbly character arc is at its best.

Funny enough I haven't played any myself. My entrance into it was watching the OG Animes, the animes of the specific shows and the LPs of Another Century Episode and SRW. I got addicted to the idea of a massive mecha crossover.
