On a Pale Horse (Umamusume/Youjo Senki)

To be fair, it kinda make sense since it put her horsey brain on habitual comfort (weight being familiar hassle) and help to physically force her high stamina, mid speed body to warm up and hit average top speed quicker.
They need to put her in training Weights like Rock Lee or a DBZ character.

The thing about Shiro is that she's always performing at her best, so if, say Grass, had an off-day then Shirogane will win.
But she isn't quite. Uma's have their supernatural aspects, and a STRONG determination to win appears to be a major factor in bringing that out.

Shiro has the discipline to train extremely hard and try to win, but not the drive to pull out that 110% performance that the rest of the Golden Generation has.

Yeah, which is why I think her first big win will come from something in her family pushing her to want to really win.
Like maybe one of her grandparents getting sick and her wanting to show the performance she made or needing rlthe big bucks money to pay for it.
"Shirogane! You have my permission to put on the training weight!"

"Wouldn't that make her slowe-HOLY SHIT SHE IS JUMPING OFF THE HILLS"
The more weight you put on her the faster she gets.

No it doesn't Uma running speed is based on rule of cool. For something the shape and size of a teenage girl to run that fast looney toons physics come into play.

Tanya runs faster wearing a military uniform because it's Tanya. Her speed is directly proportional to the sum of how badass and terrifying she is at any given moment.

Quick! Someone shoot her so she can do a race without even acknowledging the injury, she would be unstoppable!

I have this scene idea in my head where some uma breaks her leg, starts freaking the fuck out as one does, and Tanya trying (possibly succeeding) to comfort her by reminding her of her human-like power to survive and recover from a broken leg. Maybe even holding hands to make her focus on an extremity they didn't have in the lives where a broken leg really was a death sentence.

There's performing at your best (100%), and there's exceeding your limits (110%). Shirogane is always at 100% while her rivals fluctuate between 80‐110%.

She's about to not make the podium! All that money… I refuse to lose it! Prepare for battle!!!
Wait. This is brilliant! Right now Shirogane isn't able to break her limits because she thinks there's no need to risk an injury for a podium finish. To put it another way, she's kinda treating a podium finish to be a given.

Once she falls below 3rd place, her competitive side might just awaken.

Edit: This means that the only times when Shirogane runs as passionately as the rest of the Golden Gen is if she thinks her competition is strong enough that even a 3rd place finish is no longer a given, which will make her shift to a "Shoot for the stars and land on the moon" mentality.

This is actually a great comparison to what Shiro running looks like to other umas, with the blank face, unerring still features aside from the limbs, and just an absurd degree of stamina.

This gives me the funny idea that Umas conversely get stronger the more dilluted their Uma blood is like Shiro, since then they're more likely to inherit things like a human's utterly absurd stamina regeneration (for animals of our size), or injury shock resistance.

Yeah if she was IRL horse the owner and handlers probably have to give interviews where they explain that if they don't sign her up for races, Shirogane the horse gets very upset at them and will go on hunger strike. Later on they found out they can ameliorate this by waving around stacks of yen at her, because somehow their horse knew they were in debt, and was trying to help them pay the bills.

I'm just imagining how the trainers will be explaining that a horse somehow figured out that more money = good and that their ranch didn't have much money which was bad. It would be especially hilarious to see them try to figure out out how she made the connection that training and racing = getting money, so on rest days she'll be anxious and need the sight of money to calm down.

I'm imagining a scene where the ranch is on break so it's been a few days of no training, or if it's been too long since there's been a race, so torena-san wakes up to find Shiro staring at him through his bedroom window. After a panicked review of the security camera footage they find that Shiro woke up, did some up upset pacing, then opened her own stall by reaching around, jumped over the fence enclosure, waited for a green light to cross the street?!?! to get to the trainer housing, and then walked past a dozing security guard to arrive at torena-san's room.

That's the kind of wonky story the Umamusume franchise would love to run wild with.

I just hope for more interactions with Haru Urara, Tanya needs to lower her intimidation factor and spending time with pink daughter is the best for that.

All while King Halo looks over them from the background, she knows Tanya isn't a bad person but fears she may be a bad influence on her daughter roommate.

Make sense really. Polish umas probably interbreed with various horselord umas, be it mongol, tatar etc. And on open grasslands, endurance is king. Add to the fact that Polish Lithuanian Commonwealth was vast and endurance being prioritised fits.
Ngl, all this talk about historical uma stuff, along with the hints of it with Tanyas family in this fic, makes me want to read a fic set in the past of the uma-verse to explore how replacing horses with superhuman horse women couldve made history subtly different.

and out of curiosity we tried to see the reaction to other currencies she likes both euros and złoty she is less enthusiastic about dollars and kroner but don't show her soviet ruble she bites them out of your hands spits it out and stomps on them and be upset for the rest of the day
"Even polish horses have hatred of russians in their blood"

Really casts Alexander the Great's love for his horse in a different light :p

Given polish history and that polish umas would be primary target for extermination (alongside politicians, officers, doctors etc) i wouldn't be surprised if Poland don't have that many umas
There's a reason Shiro is the only Uma in her extended family, and that she inherited the uniform. Was definitely a bit of a surprise onion ninjas moment to read.
"There is only you, Mala Orlica."

The reason I'd like to see Shirogane win that classic "sextet" is the way it would transform the racing world from that point on.

Let me explain: if Shiro wins everything, it will become the goal every Uma aspires to. Yet, by attempting this without fully grasping what makes Shirogane tick—both mentally and physically—the new norm would shift toward shorter but more epic careers, accompanied by widespread frustration at the inability to match that new standard. Furthermore, it could alter the recruitment criteria for trainers, sponsors, and schools (since, ultimately, it is a business); they would prioritize "endurance-running Umas" to cultivate idols with longer careers, sidelining those who might be fast but whose competitive lifespan would inevitably be short.

Incitatus actually being a consul, King Arthur's horse/uma and his knight's horses/umas, Genghis Khan and his Harem/Horde, Quijote and Rosinante, Charlemagne's horse/uma, etc.

Yeah, like we see some people getting weird ideas already, if she gets even a mixed crown the shape of japanese racing would change forever.

Incitatus being a consul
Ironically goes from madness to being so progressive that people call you a monster. Funny shit.
King's Arthur and his knight's horses/umas
I wonder if a lot of the genderbends in Uma Fate are just Umafication?

Her running faster wearing something heavier is funny
That actually happened to me in high-school baseball. I had 2 pairs of cleats, 1 much heavier than the other, but I ran noticeably faster in the heavy cleats for some reason. They were just more comfortable to me. Although, the lighter cleats being mid/high tops and the heavier cleats being low tops may have had something to do with it. I guess sometimes comfort is more important than maxing out your numerical efficiency.

The issue is that 110% is what the Golden Generation would consider "performing at your best", it's expected, because they all have the ability to tap into that magic extra 10% when serious. Shiro being stuck at only 100%, unable to tap into that extra 10%, is a sign that she isn't yearning to win in the same way that other Uma do.
