On a Pale Horse (Umamusume/Youjo Senki)

I'm just not sure why Shiro would even want to race internationally. She doesn't care about fame, and she's probably going to be raking in plenty of money with Japanese races.
More long races that she has a better chance of getting the winner's purse. I think it was mentioned earlier in story that the Arabian races have huge prize pools.

The funniest legacy I idly imagined today at work is Shirogane running an extra-long Stayer race and her extra stompy heavy metallic boots dig into the track super deep. Then she wins it so many times that her footsteps have physically carved a graded ditch along the rail from just running the same way every single time with her "Sledgehammers for legs"

After like the 5th year it becomes a tradition and they stop repairing the track, leave the carved depression in the track as a 'terrain feature' or something and then move the actual racecourse to a different length. The 'Silver Circle' or the 'Eagle's Flight' or whatever is the central monument in the racecourse because no Uma ever so dominated a track for a decade straight

Not gonna lie I was kinda disappointed when the last chapter had them donning their G1 for practice but then we didn't have the pay off.
Shirogane has a very good chance to win the 1998 Yushun Himba, because the fillies that year are very weak at longer distances compared to the colts. The top 12 places at the 1998 Japanese Derby, on the same track and similar date and conditions, all finished faster than the winner of the 1998 Yushun Himba. She would probably have a harder time winning the 1999 Spring Tenno Sho because Special Week and Mejiro Bright are just that strong, both finishing within 1 second of the record previously set in 1997 by Mayano Top Gun.

The fillies are competitive at 2000m and below. Egao o Misete wins the 1999 Yomiuri Milers Cup (1600m), beating Matikanefukukitaru and Symboli Sword; Phalaenopsis gets 2nd at the 1999 Sapporo Kinen (2000m), 1/2 length behind Seiun Sky, but only gets 8th at the 1999 Arima Kinen (2500m) while being the fastest mare.

Shirogane would really show off her unflappable consistency and utter lack of race fatigue if she won the Himba on 5/31/1998, then came back the next week on 6/7/1998 and finished the Derby with the same splits and total time.
Yeah the author has mentioned a few times both in story and comments the weakness of the tiaras. If you're right with your times, Shiro very likely wins the Himba which I long suspected the two ornament wearer gets one of each and Himba and Kikuka were the ones. Not quite a true great without a third but still a standout achievement.

At that point with the military uniform and insane racing presence if people learn from an interview she's got the Empress at her residence frequently being an excellent senpai even not as an official title people will be joking about the Imperial Scion.

Poland didn't get a graded horse race until 2023, so she its unlikely she would race there thought that, being said, her racing in the Wielka Warszawska the race that got graded though it being in last week of September, may make possible as a third year option as the Kobe Shimbun Hai is that week in Japan.

I originally had 'Polish Races' in quotation marks to highlight how vague the phrase was, but decided to remove them because I was worried it may come across as disrespectful or dismissive to Poland/Polish races

Besides The Great Warsaw Race which you mentioned, there's also the Warsaw Derby, neither of which Shirogane has any reason to participate in (especially the derby). The only real reason Shirogane would have to run in a Polish race is either for sentimental reasons or to strengthen a public association between her and Poland (so grade and prize pool matter a lot less), and both 'motives' are out of character. For example, she would not need to use the race as a pretext to visit her grandparents, as she is straightforward enough to simply visit her grandparents. Put plainly, I don't think Shirogane will run internationally much due to the opportunity cost, and I don't see her racing in Poland outside of Omakes.

Basically, my point was more that it seemed like the person I was responding to thought that either Shirogane wanted to achieve decisive victories in Japan in the hopes that doing so would convince Polish race officials to invite her to Polish races, or Wrandmwaffles was planning to have Polish race officials invite her, and she needed a good performance in the triple crowns and tiaras to make it believable, both of which are unlikely.

Not to sound like a bitch to those who have forgotten but Shiro IS A WARHORSE. Her umamusume brain is not geared towards racing. It is not really fair to expect her to truly put her all into something If it's not really life and death. Especially with the actual war memories she does has of being the soldier. [If any of that does trigger, I'm pretty sure she's gonna get disqualified, not win. ]

This type of story can actually work. Have some faith. Please? Tropes can be subverted and it might not be something everybody's gonna like and that's okay.

Are you the co-author? Because unless you are, I don't think you really have the right to control expectations like that.

Wrong, she's an Uma Musume, from the Uma Musume series. All of them are born to love racing in general even if, and for this fic particularly, they're not really suited to it. Even Shirogane is not immune and acknowledge her body racing inclination, she's just not putting it to a top personal priority like the rest of her peers. She's only in this gig for the dollar sign and paid-for education.

I mean that Shiro is an umamusume of a war horse? I thought born to "love racing" was japanese perception of umas that "if given the chance, all umas would take it." You know, actuality, it's more akin to running. The reason I thought so was that Shiro polish grandfather was shocked that she took racing on because his sister wouldn't have done it. Then, again strong possibility that you're right and It really was just ability that's preventing 'war umas'.

What i'm trying to say is that. I don't think it's racing... i can't put my finger on it. But it's not racing that's getting Shiro excited?? It's something that racing is giving her that is almost like it, but it's not what she's actually wanting. If that makes sense?? It's close. it's close enough that she's enjoying her time racing.

I get what you're trying to say, and totally agree. The first time Shirogane runs in the story (after being bribed with being taught how to cook), you can really tell that it isn't the competition that's exciting her, it's the act of running- to the point that she sees her 'competitor' as an obstacle in the way of her running rather than something to be surpassed. In every race where we have her perspective, it further reinforces the fact that while she is trying to win, her attitude towards racing is actually rather ambivalent. This also extends to her training: when running with Silence Suzuka, she is perfectly happy to run behind her without competing/trying to overtake, as Suzuka prefers. As Impstar said, her passion is running not racing, and it shows.

As some others have said much earlier in the thread, Shirogane's relative ambivalence is a major selling point for the story (though naturally, that isn't a universal opinion). Regarding this, there are two main routes for the story to take: either Shirogane changes as a person and becomes more passionate for racing, or she doesn't. Personally, I'm hoping for the latter. For one thing, Shirogane doesn't really need to change. She's happy as who she is, and is already getting everything she wants out of racing without changing- in other words, she has no real motive to to change. For another, Shirogane remaining who she is would be much more faithful to the source material. Every horse is someone's favorite, and part of the reason for that is the distinct personalities each one has. In careers, your trainee will grow as a person, but they're still fundamentally the same person, with the same interests and passions. In Hishi Akebono's career, one of the major plot points is Akebono deciding not to change her running style against doctor recommendations for this reason. King Halo's career is all about her showing she is more than her mother's daughter, eventually deciding to focus on short distances even if it risks disappointing her mother's fans. Even in the carreers where you're managing/reigning in a more eccentric personality (e.g. Matikanefukukitaru, Sakura Bakushin O, etc.), the primary focus is on reigning them in or encouraging them, not changing their personalities, passions, or goals (Matikanefukukitaru still does her fortune telling and divinations, but learns to have self confidence while not over relying on divinations/Shiraoki. Sakura Bakushin O still aspires to longer distance races, but still runs in her distinctive all out style).

Some people may argue that Shirogane needs to change because having her remain unimpassioned towards racing would indicate a lack of growth or would be boring, but I disagree strongly. I think it's much more interesting if throughout the story, Shirogane's top priority remains family. There's a lot of interesting things that could be done with things as they are (for example, Shirogane beginning to focus too heavily on money and needing a reminder that she's only trying to earn money for her family's sake, or her classmates coming to realize how different her mentality is from theirs and learning to accept her, etc.), but on a fundamental level, I don't think this story has the foundation built for Shirogane conforming into a more conventional uma, the story has given no indication of heading that way, and is fundamentally much better for it.

With all that said, I'm confident that even if the author did decide to write Shirogane changing to be more passionate about racing/competition (though I don't think it's necessary or likely), it would be done in a well written and interesting manner that remains faithful to the character they have created. In other words, WrandmWaffles has shown themselves to be a skilled writer, and I am looking forward to whatever they have planned for the story, no matter what it may be.

I would say its the desire to work hard and then show that she has worked hard. The goal itself is to make sure to provide for her family. Previously she have had her schoolwork confiscated and chores taken from her because her parents didn't want her to work hard. This is the first time she may work hard on something that people won't take it away from her.

The opening cutscene I saw said Umas are born to run. Racing is just how they commercialize the fuck out of it and we follow professional athletes following their dreams of dedicating their lives to running instead of just doing it on the side.
Yeah, remember the first episode of Cinderella Gray? Kitahara and his friend were looking at casual racers at a public race course.

Shiro has plenty of motivation to do well. To run and keep on running. I really don't want her to change because even if she becomes a " second place loser" ( impossible. She's at least going to win one because we got to see that polish song)

I really like where Shiro is coming from. All these reasonings that people have pointed out. I'm sorry for trying to control expectations. I believe, a story could be made out of this. A legacy from an uma that refuses to change what she values be money, family hard work with the memory of being able to fly pushing her legs.

And it might not be what is sports anime is. And that's what makes it so interesting to me. There's no guarantee that it goes down this path. Of course I am not a seerer. I'm sure whatever happens will be a fun ride.

Not sure if it's asked yet, but to me it seems she should pivot to endurance and trail races, ~160 klicks a day events. (honestly pretty funny that 160 is considered endurance for a horse as 80 was my final full ruck march as a conscript).

She's not eligible for them yet because of her youth. Young honses are restricted to shorter races to cut down on how often their legs explode.

Ah but you see, Shirogane is considered robust and enduring for a racing horse/uma! A breed of horses that famously have traded health, gene pool variety, stamina etc etc for speed!

But most horse breeds aren't like that. Shirogane has fantastic stamina for a race horse/uma, but how does it compare to horses/umas that are breed for that instead of speed?

As I recall, it was stated by the author that she isn't actually a racehorse, she's just a really fast destrier.

She's descended from winged hussars though, in our world these were some very fancy lancer warhorses selected from the best crossings of Arabian and Ottoman warhorse breeds and the smaller and hardier Polish breeds. That was a military breeding programme for hardy horses that could campaign in winter and carry full plate while still being good chargers.

Omake: Paternity Fraud by arky444 New
The Polish 'race horse breed' umas would not be too different than the ones in Japan, but people in Poland would be much quicker to recognize that Shirogane is from a different lineage, and go "Damn, that's a really fast destrier."

As I recall, it was stated by the author that she isn't actually a racehorse, she's just a really fast destrier.

So this presents a bit of a problem, in that (1) a horse MUST be a Thoroughbred in order to participate in JRA races, and (2) the Thoroughbred breed is a "closed stud book" breed where all horses trace their entire lineage to the foundational members of the breed, so an IRL Shirogane cannot be a destrier by definition. Thoroughbred breeding strictly requires "live cover" breeding where the actual mating is witnessed for all Thoroughbreds in order to ensure that the stud book remains closed.

Having said that, mistakes have been made before...

"Pedigree Problems"
Komaba Gonbei, reporting for Edo Sports Press | June 4, 2003
--------------------------------------------
Say goodbye to Shirogane Orzel, a gray mare by Omen (POL) out of Hokuto Venus (JPN) by Maruzensky (JPN). Say hello to Shirogane Orzel, a gray mare by Monogramm (USA) out of Hokuto Venus (JPN) by Maruzensky (JPN).

This normally wouldn't be anything more than a curiosity. Even if this was a case of breeding fraud (which it wasn't - more on that below), Shirogane Orzel's race form speaks for itself, so any changes to her pedigree line would be academic. The fact that Shirogane Orzel just happens to be a G1-winning racehorse just makes it more interesting. Right?

There's just one little problem.

Monogramm is not a Thoroughbred.

This is the story about how a Japanese racing Thoroughbred was really a Polish Arabian warhorse in disguise.
--------------------------------------------
It all started on Amezou.

"That's a destrier"
"Looks like a Poznan horse"
"Is she part Lippizan?"
"Totally an Arabian"
"WTF"
"How in the world did no one notice LOL"

1998. Shirogane Orzel has started her legendary "one in each hand" run at the Triple Crown and the Triple Tiara. Competitively running two G1s within a week was utter insanity, and people could not stop talking about it.

That was when the trouble started.

Someone posted that Shirogane Orzel couldn't be a Thoroughbred, because no Thoroughbred could do that without their legs exploding. They called her a destrier. Shirogane Orzel's stocky physique just helped to sell the story. That led to her pedigree being questioned.

"Omen? The 1987 Great Warsaw Race winner? She doesn't look like him at all."
--------------------------------------------
The speculation ran rampant.

The JRA ignored it, of course. Troll posts on Amezou (and later 2channel) were beneath their notice. The live cover in Poland between Omen and Hokuto Venus was properly witnessed, the standard blood tests for paternity had been done, everything checked out, all the proper paperwork was signed, sealed, and delivered, and that was that.

The comments eventually died down to a low simmer, but they never really went away, especially after it was clear that Shirogane Orzel's endurance was truly unprecedented.

Life went on.
--------------------------------------------
1999. El Condor Pasa and Special Week retire. Shirogane Orzel keeps running.
2000. Grass Wonder, King Halo, and Tsurumaru Tsuyoshi retire. Phalaenopsis retires. Shirogane Orzel keeps running.
2001. Seiun Sky briefly returns to the track after recovering from injuries, then retires. There are no more other G1 winners of the "Greatest Generation" remaining. Shirogane Orzel keeps running.
2002. Shirogane Orzel keeps running.
2003. Shirogane Orzel KEEPS RUNNING.
--------------------------------------------
April 2003. People are starting to openly wonder why she hasn't been retired to be a broodmare yet. After all, Phalaenopsis had retired in 2000 to do just that, and already had two foals. The trolls said that her owners weren't breeding her because of her questionable parentage, but that was just the usual pot-stirring at this point... until someone leaked the JRA papers.
--------------------------------------------
"Sire Cannot Be Qualified"
"Certificate of Foal Registration Revoked"
"Racing Permit Issued"
--------------------------------------------
The JRA and Shirogane Orzel's owners held a press conference in response. They explained everything. Nothing was left out.
--------------------------------------------
The Amezou rumors in 1998 had rattled Shirogane Orzel's owners much more than they publically let on. They were not blind, and it was hard to believe that the 16-hand-tall Omen would sire a foal on the 16-hand-tall Hokuto Venus, and end up with a foal as short as the 14.3-hand-tall Shirogane Orzel. Shirogane Orzel had passed all of the lineage tests, though, so what was there left to do?

Molecular DNA testing.

The American Quarter Horse Association had been funding the development of molecular DNA testing technology for years. They announced that the technology was ready in 1998 and made DNA testing mandatory for all AQHA breeding stallions. Shirogane Orzel's owners quietly reached out to Omen's owners and had Omen, Hokuto Venus, and Shirogane Orzel tested with the AQHA DNA test. The results showed that Hokuto Venus was related to Shirogane Orzel as expected, but that Omen was not.

How could this be? Omen had live covered Hokuto Venus as required, witnessed by both sides. Omen's owners swore up and down that there was no cheating involved. How, then, was Omen not the sire? Further DNA testing of all of the breeding stallions at the Polish stable also failed to find the sire.

This left Shirogane Orzel's owners in a quandary. While everyone involved could simply lie about it, no one felt comfortable doing so, as these scandals had a way of coming out. Shirogane Orzel's owners chose to throw themselves at the mercy of the JRA and disclosed all of the findings to them. The JRA, in the interest of saving face for everyone involved, chose to quietly resolve the matter by first revoking Shirogane Orzel's Certificate of Foal Registration, which made her ineligible to race and be a broodmare as a Thoroughbred, followed by immediately issuing her a Racing Permit, making her eligible to race again, but still leaving her ineligible to be a broodmare. Some trickery was used to file paper copies of the paperwork WITHOUT updating the corresponding electronic databases. Shirogane Orzel's Certificate of Foal Registration would be silently reinstated IF her owners were able to find her actual sire and prove that said sire was a Thoroughbred. Meanwhile, Shirogane Orzel would continue to race.

There things stood, until 2002.

WN Star of Antigua, a gray Arabian colt, was foaled in 2002 in the United States of America. This was the first year that the Arabian Horse Registry of America required DNA testing to register foals, and so a DNA test sample was submitted, along with samples from sire Monogramm and dam WN Antigua. The testing itself was routine, but this was the first time that Monogramm's DNA data entered a database. There are only so many equine DNA testing labs around the world, and Shirogane Orzel's owners had a standing request with all of them to test her DNA against any breeding stallion of the right age as the data came in.

Monogramm's match with Shirogane Orzel was checked, rechecked, and finally confirmed by the end of 2002. Her pedigree was quietly updated at the JRA, and the door to her being a Thoroughbred broodmare was shut forever.
--------------------------------------------
So how DID Monogramm, from the United States, end up siring Shirogane Orzel in POLAND?

Monogramm is descended from Bask, a Polish Arabian stallion, born in Poland, that won awards and stood stud in the United States. An award-winning horse himself, Monogramm was bred back into the Polish Arabian breed by covering a two-year stud tour throughout Poland from 1993 to 1994. He is revered in Poland as a legendary sire, changing and significantly improving the Polish Arabian breed by siring 112 foals through both live covering and artificial insemination.

Records place Monogramm in the same area as Hokuto Venus, to cover an Arabian mare that was temporarily staying at the same farm as Omen. Somehow, Monogramm must have live covered Hokuto Venus without anyone noticing, out in the exercise fields, before Omen had his turn. Sounds ridiculous, but truth is stranger than fiction - a virile stallion can be in-and-out in under 5 minutes and completely deposit his seed within the mare's uterus without spilling a single drop to be found.

As to why no one tested Monogramm's DNA in 1998, when it was known that he was at the same Polish stable at the time? They simply forgot, as Monogramm didn't stay long and had been gone for years by then.

In hindsight, anyone who knew anything about Arabian horses in Europe would have instantly recognized Shirogane Orzel for what she is, if they had the opportunity to see her. She looks virtually identical to Ekstern, the undefeated Arabian show horse, bred from the same sire and foaled the year before her in 1994...

...all the way down to the same, diminutive 14.3-hand height.

It honestly feels like the old story that you cannot be an Olympic athlete if you have a paying job, that was used originally so only rich people who could afford to not work to be the ones in the Olympics.

But I don't really know a lot about horse races.

Still this is the kind of event that would have the rules changed or modified to allow horses like her to race, I don´t think anyone would want such a legendary horse (bu that part of the story) to not be allowed to have foals, other lineages would kill to have those Terminator like, stamina genes in their lineage.

Almost feels like a soap-opera, I bet the guys at 2 and later 4 chan had years long conspiracies. and more than one guessed right.

I do wonder how all of this would be translated to the Uma world... did shirogane mom cheated?
perhaps it was an ancestor who had a torrid love affair with an American or perhaps am Arabian prince.

I would love to see her parentage to be found to be one of Genghis khan´s horses or perhaps some other almost mythical breed of Umas.

but i guess the best choice would be for her to be just a freak of nature, one of those anime characters that are just built different.

Now that'd be funny. Tanya's horse life being one of Genghis Khan's ponies (and somehow chief logistics advisor/strategist) would be absolutely fucking hilarious. Khan may have fathered a bulk of the human population of the era, but Tanya's brood? They've long since split off into the rulers of damn near every nation's horses worldwide.

This is exactly right. The live covering requirement is primarily in place to keep the supply of Thoroughbreds down. Maintaining the purity of the breed is just an excuse.

That is how the Racing Permit works. Thoroughbred lineages are matrilineal, so any horse born from a Thoroughbred mare is at least half-Thoroughbred and will be allowed to race by special permit. This ensures that horses don't miss their classic year while people are disputing their pedigree, like what happened to Alhambra's Prince in 1978.

Shirogane wouldn't be allowed to breed and have her offspring registered as a Thoroughbred, due to the closed stud book requirements. However, other breeds aren't so strict. I was going to write a part where her owners try to breed her with a Polish Wielkopolski, only to find out the hard way that she is another Fine Motion, but that wouldn't have fit timeline-wise with the article about her messed-up pedigree, because they can't try to breed her until after she retires from racing, and she's still running in 2003.

There's a major issue with this "fact" in that Uma don't have to have lineage to be born; they can just pop up from human parents. It just simply makes much more sense that any Uma of sufficient talent and backing would be able to race. To not let them would be a textbook case of racism.
