Demonic jungle fits the ideas I was going for pretty well. My whole thing with the family is indulging in their darker instincts and embracing them as a counter to Charlie teaching her family how to embrace their better sides. hell giving both the freedom to explore these emotions.

I was thinking a giant black wolf that when it walks it spreads the darkness of the thickest forest behind it, and that when it appears in his human form you can see the beast within snarling and trying to rip free of its human skin. Basically treat the son eventually like a hurricane or a lovecraft creature, something bigger and primal despite a normal look on the surface.
