Because if he did then he would have to acknowledge how much of his own personality is fake and designed to make his mom's happy and not what he actually believes in. I was kind of thinking as he fights monsters and starts taking lead over the group, not just fighting but he also really enjoys being in charge and just in general doing stuff. he's used to being always on the side lines for his mom's so being able to fight back and control things feels good to him.

I feel bad for Russia honestly, you read about their history and it's a never ending tango line of trauma that causes progressively worse governments to get in power in response. Shit like the Nazi invasion causing so much death and destruction, Russia's main defensive priority even now is to have puppet governments between them and the enemy causing the issues in Poland and Hungary to Ukraine.
