I want to call it a horror, but it's not that scary. The definite focus on the books is the family drama and the grieving process which is just painfully real as someone who's dealt with something similar. But there are a few spooks in there. So I'll go in the middle and call it a paranormal thriller.

Not as sinister, Pet Cemetery is easily one of the scariest books I've ever read. But it definitely has its moments so far. Like there was this one scene where the main character was walking into the living room of her parents house for the first time after the accident, and in between the grief and seeing all of the objects around the house and remembering fond memories.

There's this shot of like a glass display case the mom had filled with all her favorite dolls and puppets she had created, and their heads were all following the MC as she walked around the house and every time she looked at them she had to keep reminding herself that they weren't alive and they weren't moving. She was just tired and this was all in her head.
