I kind of like the idea of their being rituals and contracts that can be signed, where peasants or lowly knights can be basically blood adopted into a noble family and be given their bloodlines power. Something they do for a loyal retainer or to reward a great service. Make it a seen as a very big deal, with a huge ceremony and political ramifications like being knighted or marrying a princess.

Could also have an evil character or villain who's just adding in new members as fast as possible so he can build an army of werewolves as fast as possible to conquer. That would be an amazing back story actually. A scorned bastard prince looking to reclaim his birthright, resorting to freely sharing his blood with any thug, mercenary, or bandit he can convince to join his side.

Ends up eventually self destructing as fast as he rose, as his army holds no real loyalty to him or each other and quickly splinters apart under a united push by every other noble who feels insulted at the very idea of tarnishing a blood adopting purely for power. But in the end it leaves a complicated question of what to do with the remnants of his army.

Of course there are some that wish to just execute them as dispoliers or heretics, but the sheer number and the fact many turned coats meant cooler heads prevailed, and many were settled in the devastated regions left heir less from this huge war. But that still leaves this lingering divide between the older noble bloods and what are see as the newer tainted families formed from the bastard princes armies.

With the MC of the story unknowingly being a distant relative of that original bastard Prince and the one who inherits his monstrous strength and his hidden bloodline power that was thought lost forever.

I was more thinking Biomancy or some kind of mad scientist warp stone power, something to go along with the whole perversion of the natural order that the bastard prince was seen as but darkness manipulation could fit that too.
