Coronavirus COVID-19 Pandemic

... dafuq? Could you PM me a link?

... seriously?! What you're describing is very much not a violation of either site's rules.
You act like either SBs or SVs mod actually give a damn what their rules say, instead of how they can twist them to attack their ideological opponents and people who spread info they do not want spread.

Train Dodger spread info that the CCP did not want spread, and the mods on those sites are afraid of angering the CCP with having the truth get out.

Uhm, can we not get into conspiracy theories? In any case I'm sorta tempted to post[1] about Train Dodger / *THASF* in the SB thread since I don't think it's been brought up. That alright with you Train Dodger?

[1] Unless someone else wants to do it? I...don't really have a stake in this since to be honest and I'd just be doing it out of amusement to see the various reactions.

Well, actually, that's the people on Discord who said that.

When I appealed my ban, citing my evidence, The Observer said "stop harassing my staff, this ban is permanent with no appeal".
... ugh.

... okay. I can kinda see a mod warning for that post. A permaban, especially after you cited your evidence (which you really should have done in the post itself), is just ridiculous.

It was the same story on both SB and SV. The more evidence I cited, the angrier they got. It's usually the exact opposite. Their behavior was very strange, like they were extremely eager to clamp down on any talk that contravened the official narrative and official death counts. I actually had staff on SV liking my post for my scientific accuracy, until they unilaterally decided to lock it and ban me:

https://forums.sufficientvelocity.com/threads/covid-19-research-thread.63729/

When I appealed, Ford Prefect overruled everybody and unilaterally suspended me indefinitely, without going through the actual public appeal process.
That's weird, I think that usually only happens when there's legal implications. I'm not a lawyer though or a scientist, so I don't know what the exact problem would be.

It's not legal implications, and don't let them fool you.

It's fear of truths getting out they do not want heard, particularly when those truths anger the CCP or put the site in danger of being on the CCPs shitlist.

Mods on both sites are far more friendly to CCP propaganda and misinformation than they are any information that comes from sources which say otherwise. They, like a lot of the media and net, want that sweet Chinese marketshare, which can go away if they anger the CCP.

My guess is that they are extra wary of a conspiracy theory. :( Too bad the reality might look like a conspiracy theory.
They want reality to be sensible, to be reasonable, to be fair.

Reality is under no obligation to be any of those things, and things humans will do to save face often defy logic.

This is China's Chernobyl; except unlike Chernobyl, this isn't a contained situation that mostly affects a limited region.

While i agree in part, i must say : this is not China's fault that this pandemic disease exists. Things happen, viruses mutate and it was only a matter of time until we had a bad stroke of luck.
What we can point out (for all administrations really) is how they handled the outbreak. But frankly, here in France or on the side of the Atlantic we are not doing better/great.

This is why i really hate the denomination 'Wuhan Flu'. It perpetuates a bad human habit of pointing fingers.

I call it that because it's illegal to say it in China.

And when they stop doing lovely things like covering up plagues and selling human organs for profit... I'll consider giving a fuck about their feelings.

This is not a matter of China's feelings. I couldn't give a rat's ass about that. But it's inaccurate, the scientific community has a better descriptive name (COVID19) and it doesn't help us being better humans (why force an innocent city to be the scapegoat ?).

We could have know about this bug two months earlier if China hadn't covered it up.

We could have been screening passengers, getting supplies stockpiles, and preparing much earlier if China hadn't tried to hide this. And that's not even going into the evidence this was caused by fuck-ups at the Wuhan biolab.

The Chinese people are victims here, but the Chinese Communist Party deserves all the blame.

Also, is it 'scapegoating' Egypt when you use the label West Nile Virus? Is it 'scapegoating' the Rocky Mountain region when you use the label Rocky Mountain Fever? Is it 'scapegoating' the people around the Ebola River when you use the label Ebola? Is it racist against Spaniards to use the label Spanish Flu?

No to all of that.

The media has pushed the 'it's racist to use Wuhan Flu or Chinese flu' narrative because the CCP wants them to, and because it gives them an angle to attack POTUS. Nothing more, nothing less.

Point.

I shall now call it the Chinese Virus. Happy?

Heeeeeh.... same old...

I am partial to Xi Jinping's Coronavirus.

Yes. Which is why we have better denomination rules now

EDIT :

Xi Jinping's Coronavirus.
Doesn't quite roll off the tongue, but I don't dislike where you're coming from.

How about the CCP Plague? I could get behind that. Or commie-plague, if you prefer.

Make you a deal: if you can prove you made this argument *before* the Chinese Virus came out... I'll take your argument seriously.

I am not an epidemiologist, but i will let the specialists talk : the WHO made this argument in 2015. ;)

EDIT :
That name was made to shift blame away from the CCP, which has turned the WHO into it's mouthpiece in many ways.

That I why I am using the Wuhan Flu name. The CCP are enemies of humanity now, and I will never give them an inch by allowing them to dodge or downplay their part in why things are so bad.

Then use the name 'CCP Plague' instead of 'Wuhan Flu' ? Because the COVID19 is neither Wuhan's fault, neither a flu.

EDIT:
And frankly, i am not convinced about the WHO being anyone mouthpiece. You might need some proof for that assertion. I don't know, i might have missed something about them ?

Wuhan Flu is accurate, follows previous naming schemes for virus's, and rolls off the tongue decently.

So I'm going to keep using it.

Except previous naming schemes were deemed inaccurate (ex: Spanish Flu -> 1918 Influenza) and there is a real push for the current naming convention to be adopted ?
Usage is never a 'good' argument. See about the imperial system, which is only in place in the USA because of usage and ought to be replaced by the metric system.

* if your local supermarkets are under stocked then try the Asian supermarkets. Because of the stigma they aren't getting much business and often have a lot more stock than your local Safeway or Fred Meyer.
This is good advice. Similar to people avoiding corona beer for those looking for beer. Unfortunately, i'm from the philippines and there's not such markets nearby that I'm aware of.

I'm just glad we were well-stocked before the quarantines hit, so we're not in a bad situation.

Not. A. Flu.
Wuhan Flu is accurate, follows previous naming schemes for virus's, and rolls off the tongue decently.
And, yet again, it's not a flu.

It doesn't even fucking resemble a flu from a medical standpoint, being about as far away from one as the cold is.

But if I call it a cold everyone will laugh at me and my immunocompromised wife hiding in our basement. :)

Seriously though, its the word for "Worse than cold; no visible spots" in general parlance.

It's wrong in the same way whales are not fish.

Eh, closer to "bug vs insect" than "whale vs fish".

Whale, fish, and insect are all technical terms with clearly defined scientific meanings (fun fact- the difference between dolphin and whale? Dolphins have teeth.)

Flu and bug, while they have documented etymological origins from more technical terminology (influenza and bedbugs, respectively) are not official scientific terminology and have a more generic meaning.

Bug now means pretty much any annoying little creepy-crawly you want it to mean. Arthropods, pathogens, computer errors, small children... it's a rather subjective term with no absolute definition.

Meanwhile, Flu means... basically what you already said. It can be relatively light influenza (bad influenza cases usually get given the full name, or the name of their worst symptom like pneumonia, because it sounds more impressive I guess), unusually harsh common cold (and the Wuhan Flu is in the same family as the common cold), and even some bacteria like a mild case of salmonella (aka: food poisoning). Again: subjective with no absolute definition.

Now, calling it Wuhan Influenza would actually be scientifically inaccurate, same way as calling a centipede an insect would be. But calling it Wuhan Flu is exactly as accurate as calling a centipede a bug.

No. That might be vaguely acceptable if it was just a matter of terminology, or if the disease had been contained. As-is, when people not taking this seriously is a serious driving factor beyond the spread of what's basically a biblical plague, there are serious, moral problems with trivializing it.

Calling it a flu isn't just wrong in the ontological or factual sense -- the way in which calling a whale a fish would be. It's wrong in the moral sense -- in the same way in which breaking into my uncle's home and shooting him in the face would be, if not quite as blatantly so.

The outcome could very well be the same.

So are killer whales. And genetically, both are more similar to dolphins than they are to other whales. But, then lemurs are more genetically similar to humans than they are squirrels in spite of appearances.

*Shrug* Maybe you should take it up with the taxonomists. But, that's probably already been done, which is why they now consider dolphins to be "toothed whales" or something to that effect.
