There are several classes of Fae, and Taylor's just a Pixie, one of the lowest rank. It's the higher ranks that go to extremes like that.

Depends on the mythos really. Some have it as hard-coded, nothing to be done they are what they are, others it's where one can consume another to gain their power and 'level' up into a different rank once they have enough....I don't want to say power but I can't think of anything else that gives the same idea.

Anyway, once they have enough mcguffin sauce, they go on to being better and stronger. Kinda like Hallows in Bleach now that I think about it.

We don't really have enough to tell but I would guess it is closer to the latter given that we noticeably aged by taking 10 years from Emma and adding them to ourself.
