Chapter 190: Shrine of Oryx (2) New
[War Tent, Sanctuary]

The war tent felt tighter than it looked. Maps were still sprawled over the table, edges of the parchment pinned by knives and empty mags. Lamps hummed with flickering lights, but this time it no longer felt bleak.

Ikorra pushed the flap and walked in. Tevis, Levi, Cory, Bandit and Pahin came right behind her.

As they entered, all eyes went to them. Zavala looked up from the head of the table, shoulders set. Cayde leaned against a pole. On the other side, Shaxx took an entire corner by himself and still looked too big for it. The Hidden packed the left wall—hoods, scanners, quiet hands. The Praxic Fire—Eriana, Wei Ning, Sai Mota—stood to the right. And by the back post, Liu Feng and three Sunbreakers stood at attention, scorching flames flaring around their figure.

Tevis blinked. "Sunbreakers?"

Liu's chin tipped in a small nod. "Ouros sent us here," she said. "When we heard Void was trapped inside, she felt it was obligatory to send us."

Ikorra didn't waste any more time. "For that, we all thank you. But now, let's get to work."

Cayde pushed off the pole. "So is the part where we pretend this is simple and go in guns blazing?"

"It's not," Ikorra replied, flat. She set a small trapezoid on the map. The green runes along its edges woke like eyes opening. "But it's clear."

She looked around the table. "We're bringing him back."

The tent fell silent, and everyone leaned in.

Ikorra pointed to the chip on Pahanin's wrist. "We track him with that," she said. "It's got a bind on his signature that the Hellmouth hasn't stripped. Naturally, the Nightstalkers lead." She looked to Tevis. "You, Pahanin, Cory, Bandit, your squad moves first. You pick whatever path you need, disregard all threats. Your job is to reach him. Is that clear?"

Tevis nodded once. "Copy."

"Sunbreakers," Ikorra went on, eyes shifting to Liu. "Anything that tries to come up from the core and stop our lead squad—You kill it. Burn it down. Don't chase the Hive, let them come to you, but wherever the Nightstalkers go, they must be protected."

Liu's mouth tipped. "We can do that."

"Praxic Fire and Crucible squads hold the surface approaches," Ikorra said. "Eriana, you take east. Wei, west. Sai, your squad will be on the south. Shaxx-"

Shaxx turned to her, fists clenched. "I'll keep my rookies from getting heroic."

"Exactly," Ikorra said. "Find your lanes, do what you must. But remember. We're doing this to bring someone back. I will not accept a single casualty. No matter what, you must come back alive. "

Eriana folded her arms and nodded, "I will make sure none of us get hurt, you leave that to me," she said. Her voice held heat without shouting.

Ikorra tapped the trapezoid. "My Hidden will ride with the lead team," she said and looked to Eris. "You don't fight unless you have to. Stick to the shadows. Once we locate this shrine, we'll get to deciphering the trap. We have all the records the city received from Void. Do not fail me."

Eris Morn stepped forward and set down a journal of runes, "We won't", she said. "Everything is ready."

"Cayde." Ikorra finally glanced at him.

"At your service." Cayde snapped to a salute.

Ikorra shook her head and continued, "New Lights will go with you. We don't have the luxury to keep them out of this. Let them loose on Helllmouth, do whatever it takes to force the Hive to come outside. Got it?"

Cayde sucked in a cold breath, "Wait just one damn minute", his eyes widened, "Did you just tell me to f*ck around and find out? That's what you said, isn't it? Let loose. Did I hear that right?"

A faint smirk twitched on Ikorra's lips, "Guess your bionics really are getting rusty. The Cayde I know would've jumped at this chance."

"Rude. But you're goddamn right I will." Cayde deftly rolled out his revolver, spinning it on his fingers, "Just you wait. The whole place will be downright unrecognisable when the New lights and I are done with it. I will send the New Lights the mission as soon as possible."

Ikorra smiled at him. She looked down, and her smile slowly faded. Ikorra's gaze moved one more time around the circle. "I won't lie to you," she said and paused.

She took in a breath and heaved a sigh. "This is risky. If you don't feel right about it, if you have even the slightest doubt, walk out now. No one will say a word. No one will hold a grudge."

As her words echoed around the tent, everyone shared a glance, and a still silence passed over the crowd. A moment later, Eriana stepped forward.

"Risky? It's always been risky." She gave a wry smile, "Besides, most of us here were saved by him. Were we not? It's about damn time we pay him back."

Sai scratched her head, "I'd say the same. But I thought that was a given."

Wei chuckled and slammed her fists together, "A little Hive won't scare us off. And like Eriana said. We owe him one." She looked around.

Cayde pulled his hood down, and his lips curled, "Guess we're all idiots."

Shaxx rumbled under his breath, not quite a laugh.

Zavala drew in a breath, "Then let's hear the plan clearly," he said.

Ikorra nodded to Pahanin. "Chip."

Pahanin stepped forward, flipped the cover, and pushed the twin studs. The light woke under the plates. A dot glowed on a thin map of the Moon and sat deep. "He's still there," Pahanin said, voice level through effort. "He hasn't moved."

"Bring up the scanned map of Hellmouth." Ikorra flicked her wrist, and a Hidden passed her a chip. She used her ghost to project the data within.

A topographic map of Hellmouth's maw appeared in the room. Ikorra traced a route from Sanctuary to the maw with her finger. "We run the direct lane," she said. "Shaxx, you and the curcible squads hold the ridge here. Cayde, you'll be right on the other side."

Wei Ning leaned in over the map, smile thin and real. "Been a while since we did something this stupid."

"Then we're long overdue," Sai said, almost cheerful.

Pahanin's hand tightened on the edge of the table. "How long do we have?"

Ikorra didn't dress it. "A day. Two. Not much more. We need to move now."

Zavala looked at a data pad by his side, counting the gear they had gathered. "Sparrows prepped," he said. "Ammo rations at the gate. Medics on the second line. I've got scouts watching the maw—anything changes, you'll hear it on our comms"

Ikorra turned for the flap, then paused and looked back once more. "Last thing, don't be careless, listen to those you're with," she added. "Whatever the Hive have down there was enough to trap our best. Do not let your guard down."

Cayde snapped two fingers off his thigh. "You heard the woman."

Shaxx's helm dipped. "Move."

Ikorra pushed the flap aside. "Let's go."

The crowd broke apart, and the Hidden flowed out first, already quiet. The Praxic Fire gathered their kits without speaking and followed. Shaxx ducked the pole and filled the doorway for a second like a door himself, then was gone. Liu clapped one of her Sunbreakers on the shoulder and headed for the light. Tevis grabbed Pahanin's shoulder and gripped hard, then let go. Pahanin nodded, and the two stepped out.

Zavala stood a heartbeat longer, watching the tent empty itself into motion, then turned and went to his boards.

Ikorra didn't look back. She crossed the yard in long, steady steps. At the gate, she stopped just long enough for Tevis to pull up alongside her.

"You really sure about this plan?" Tevis asked quietly.

"You've never questioned my plans before," Ikorra smiled, "Guess this really is something crazy."

Tevis shook his head and took a few steps forward, "No. It's just that for the first time, I really don't want to fail." He looked back and gave a wry smile. Tevis moved and disappeared into a blur.

Ikorra looked up at the Horizon and then she spoke almost to herself, "We'll bring him out. I promise you that."

Moments later, sparrow engines flared, and squads gathered in lines, shooting towards Hellmouth. In the distance, the inverted fortress still stood tall, its maw radiating a terrifying darkness that seemed to sap away the life around it.

But it didn't matter anymore. Even when Hellmouth bellowed with its fiendish fire, the ground cracked open with fissures, and the horizon split at its seams, not a single guardian turned back.

On a different topic, are you going to have Void's faction/foundry sell/reward Sivafied equipment after Wrath of the Machines or Rise of Iron or whenever he gets his hands on Siva tech stuff.

I know we're not at the Dark Below raid yet, but damn it's a pretty good prelude to set stuff up for Crota's End.

The entire arc is pretty much a prelude to the Dark Below Raid. I didn't want to rush into anything, so I took my time fleshing out the characters and the abilities. Still, I think I need to do a few more things before I am ready to go. Once that's set, the raid will be a banger of a read for sure.

Void's faction will do a lot of things, to be honest. Selling equipment like that is on the table, for now, the faction is just growing with players, and there aren't many NPCs in it except Pahanin and maybe Kaviss. (Spider doesn't really count.) Overall, the faction will continue expanding and slowly do more. It already sells weapons that are custom made but yes, slowly selling Sivafied weapons and Hive weapons is not out of expectation.

Good stuff, I'm really hoping you have like a cinema for the New Lights to show Voids situation. I'm curious to see what Osiris meant that Void might be changed, excited to finally see it

I've got the cinematics planned. Idk why, but when I write those, my brain actually starts working and the words flow out. As for what happens, well, I am not really gonna explain the situation, so just read on. Don't be quick to form conclusions, is all.

[Sanctuary, Ocean of Storms]

A group of players drifted through the lanes of Sanctuary like they'd done it a hundred times.

Waffles spun a knife and caught it by the tip. "Two bounties left. Patrols at the ridge? What's next?"

"Nah, ridge is dead," TheOneWhoKnocks said. "The drops there are garbage. Plus, engrams barely drop. We definitely gotta do a quick loop of bounties again."

Gandalf cracked his neck. "Bro, the bounties only refresh every 24 hours. We're actually out."

ThunderClappin kicked at a pebble. "I vote, we run another crucible match."

"Bold," ILoveLoot said. "Wrong, but bold."

IEatPaint clicked his tongue, "Don't mind him, he's just salty he lost last time."

BearSpray glanced at Hellmouth in the distance, "Hmm, no new missions yet?" he said. "Hate running these old missions, honestly, the content doesn't do well."

"Woah...relax there, bud." Dumbledore cleared his throat, "Almost made it sound like your content actually does well sometimes."

"Dog, I already told you, me not tagging you was a genuine mistake, I actually forgot." BearSpray facepalmed.

Dumbledore shook his head, "Yeah, yeah, save the yap." He crossed his arms, "Might as well start working on an apology video at this point."

"Chill out, it's really not that big of a deal." Waffles chirped.

"Huh? Crazy to be yapping after being tagged first." Dumbledore raised his brow, "Didn't your channel gain like a 100 subs?"

Waffles shrugged, "Can't argue with that."

"Aite, bro, I'll just tag you first next time. Let it go." BearSpray groaned.

"You better, you dog." Dumbledore heaved a sigh.

"If you bi*ches are done beefing, we could just go for patrols near Ocean of Storms." Undecided cut in.

Instantly, a response resounded from all four in unison.

"F*ck no."

"First, the enemies are absolute dogwater. Take too long to kill, and the drop rates are ass. Like, actually ass." BearSpray immediately continued.

"Leave that, the f*cking place is too big. Riding from one fight to the next takes five f*cking minutes. Five minutes and the sparrows are SLOW AS F*CK. Like, how do they not go ANY faster? What is this shi*." Waffles barked.

"They really do need to fix that shi*" IEatPaint hummed and nodded.

"True, but consider this. Low key...Ocean of Storms is ass." ILoveLoot replied.

"L take." Gandalf instantly shot back.

"What do you mean, L take? It's dogshit. Give me one reason it's good."

"Bruh, idk, it's got the vibes and shi*"

"Vibes? What the f*ck are you even talking about, ma-"

They were still mid-complaint when a soft chime rolled across the camp. Their HUDs blinked as one.

[PUBLIC EVENT: LET LOOSE — STARTING SOON!]

The players froze.

Waffles stopped walking. "No shot."

"Kinda sus, almost like the developers know we ran out of shi* to do." Undecided narrowed his eyes.

"Yeah, don't care. Where is it?" TheOneWhoKnocks retorted.

"It's....it's right here?" Gandalf squinted and examined the map closely, "Like, right at the entrance of Sanctuary."

"Huh?" IEatPaint raised his brows.

Just then, Cayde's voice shot through the comms. "Hey, kiddos. It's your favourite Vanguard. Sorry to interrupt your tour of the moon, but I've got an announcement. The last mission went really well, and we definitely kicked some Hive ass. The thing is, the only reason we could even do all that was because Viper went to Hellmouth alone and fought off the crazies in the core."

Cayde paused and sighed, "Now? It's been well over a few days, but there's been no news of the guy. City thinks he's still stuck inside. Situations not looking good, and there are already a few rescue teams on their way to extract him."

"And this is where the problem comes in. Too many Hive around Hellmouth for our team to penetrate the core. The solution is called 'you.' Here's the game: go wild. Anywhere around Hellmouth. The more you wreck, the more you rile those bastards up and keep them away from the City's breach."

"Best part," Cayde went on, cheerful. "Whatever you find, you keep. And if that doesn't tickle your neurons, I'm sweetening it with something from my personal collection. And before you ask! It's not the cowboy hat....Well, maybe, depends on your performance."

ThunderClappin clapped. "Yo...he said personal collection."

"Focus," TheOneWhoKnocks said, already bringing the map up like a greedy bastard.

"More like, didn't he just say Viper is trapped in Hellmouth?" Waffles asked.

"Sacrificial Hero NPC type shi?" IEatPaint chuckled.

"More like big balls. He went in alone." Dumbledore nodded.

ILoveLoot shook his head, "Main character aura."

"It is kinda cool that the entire city wants to save him, though." TheOneWhoKnocks nodded, a map spread open in front of him, and his eyes sparkled. "Okay. We've got four minutes till the event starts."

"True, all we gotta do is blow shi* up right?" Undecided said.

Gandalf rubbed his chin and then something clicked for him, "Wait, just one second."

Waffles chimed in, "Think we just do the patrols, bro."

"Guess so," ThunderClappin said, already jogging toward the gate.

"I said WAIT!" Gandalf spoke up again, and everyone stopped. He looked around, "Let's do it all then."

"What?" Dumbledore raised a brow.

Gandalf opened the map and looked at all the activities available on the moon, "Everything, just queue it up. As long as it's here, it counts, right? So let's split up, and do it all at once."

"BearSpray, Undecided with me." TheOneWhoKnocks finished. "I think we'll be sticking to the Patrols."

BearSpray grinned. "Damn right, stream's already on."

"Dude, also get a new mic though," Gandalf chirped, "Last time you sounded like you were inside a blender."

"Nah, I am too broke for a better one," BearSpray said, already pulling his helmet down.

"Ok, hold up." Waffles looked from side to side, "Dumbledore and ILoveLoot with me then. We'll go to the enemy sectors and farm some waves."

ILoveLoot quickly sent over a fireteam invite "I'll be choosing the sectors, thank you very much."

Dumbledore shrugged and accepted.

Thunderclappin crossed his arms, "Guess that leaves." He looked at Gandalf, and IEatPaint, "Us three?"

IEatPaint sighed, "Guess it does."

Their HUDs ticked again.n

[PUBLIC EVENT: LET LOOSE — BEGIN][00:10]

The players scattered and broke apart, rushing to their own fireteams, racing their sparrows towards Hellmouth.

Just as they left Sanctuary, another wave of players departed. This continued till hundreds of players had rushed out, and the event countdown finally finished.

It had begun.

=

[Healthmouth]

A bleak horizon loomed above, and a group of sparrows cut across the flats in a long, bright line. Dust chased their fins; the maw sat ahead like a black wound in the horizon.

Comms clicked. Cayde came in, light as ever. "Good news."

Tevis smirked without looking. "Yeah?"

"New Lights are already on their way," Cayde said. "Whole damn crowd. In the hundreds."

"Damn, guess you really upped the stakes, huh? What'd it take?" Tevis chuckled.

"Please, what more would they want than a sense of duty? They'll be heroes after this one." Cayde chuckled to himself.

"You can butter those newbies up, not me, though." Tevis retorted with a smirk.

"Relax, I told them Viper's in a mess and all they need to do to help out is blow sh*t up anyway." Cayde shrugged, "But hey, I did say they could keep whatever they find."

"You sly dog." Tevis raced his sparrow faster, "That's all it took?" He looked back at Bandit, "Guess you really might hit it off with these new lights after all."

"Huh? F*ck no, they're all a bit crazy." Bandit barked back, riding beside Tevis, a strange shiver ran down his spine, "They give me the creeps."

"Whoa, you mad cuz they got permission to take shi* and you didn't? Talk about being salty." Cory chimed in.

"Nah, those bastards...they're all way too strange. Didn't you see them move? It's like they read each other's thoughts." Bandit cringed.

"Relax, bud, no one's out creeping you. You literally lurk in the shadows. And besides, didn't you find all this out because you tailed them for a few days?" Levi immediately retorted.

"Keep it down, boys, I need clear comms," Sai spoke up, and the channel went quiet.

"Wait...Cayde, did you actually promise them anything they find?" Eriana hummed in thought.

Static played out, and then Cayde cut in, "Uh..yeah? I mean, I'd say it's worth it, what could they possibly find from all the weird Hive scrap anyway?"

Eriana laughed, "Careful. If the archivists hear you gave that stuff away, they'll file a complaint and then file us."

"Wouldn't be my first complaint," Cayde said.

Liu Feng's voice cut clean through the line. "Eyes up. We're close."

Wei Ning and Sai Mota glanced at each other as they crested the last rise. Without a word, they peeled off the column—two streaks angling wide to take the flanks. They dropped speed, ghosted the last hundred metres, then stepped off their Sparrows in one motion, boots hitting stone where the first gallery began.

"Alright, people, it's time." Eriana followed their track and posted behind, her eyes gleaming as she glanced at Hellmouth's maw. "We'll hold your back," she said. "Go."

The Nightstalkers didn't break stride. The Hidden tucked in tight behind them, hoods low, scanners dark. Sunbreakers flashed past with their engines still hot, Liu leading, two in red holding the rear, and they all rode towards the peak of the maw.

Their sparrows rolled to a stop, and as the engines died, a chill spread through the air.

The group walked up the last few steps to the edge. Hellmouth breathed cold up their faceshields. They stood at the lip and looked in.

Pahanin checked the chip one more time—cover flipped. The dot sat where it had sat since yesterday: deep, still. He shut it, swallowed, and scanned the faces around him—Tevis, Levi, Bandit, Cory, Liu, the Hidden shadows standing tall in thin air.

"Alright," he said. It came out steady. "No more waiting."

He backed up a half-step, rolled his shoulders once, and leaned over the edge. For a heartbeat, he stood there, measuring the wind and the fall, like a diver deciding to trust water.

Then he jumped.

Tevis went next without hesitation, one clean step and gone. Levi barked a short laugh that sounded like a curse and tipped after him. Bandit vanished like a dropped knife. Cory stepped off the lip and let the dark take his outline. The Hidden followed like they had always meant to. Liu looked once at Eriana's distant post, nodded to her unseen, and went over—her Sunbreakers on her heels, and they jumped in.

The maw swallowed them all one by one, the presence of their light vanishing from the world as they fell in. With the guardians forcefully entering Hellmouth, something strange stirred within the core of the Ancient Chambers.

Hellmouth itself quivered, and then a shriek echoed in the halls of Crota's chambers.

Omnigul rose into the air. Her eyes burned with fury. She had sensed it. The intrusion of light in their dark palace. A bold yet foolish move.

The Ascendant witch raised a palm, and an army of Knights rose with blades raised, their eyes flickering with power; they marched.
