That actually sounds a lot like the gnostic heresy, which was popular in the late 1st century AD. They believed that the world was created by an imperfect demiurge, and the project of humanity was to return the world to perfection. As a utopian philosophy, it ran into the usual problem that not everyone agrees on what perfection looks like and how much suffering (of others) is justified in getting there.
