Manga Rec Thread

Holyland, by Mori Kouji.

Straight up one of the best 'loser at the end of his rope becomes a badass fighter" manga I've ever read. The fights are ground-level brawls with no supernatural elements whatsoever, all the main cast are likeable (a requirement for me nowadays), and there are no asspulls anywhere.

The only potential turnoff is the art style, which occasionally takes a turn for the weird, but it really grows on you, especially since it works in tandem with how well fighting techniques are explored and demonstrated.

Sun-Ken Rock was also pretty good...up until it's final arc, which is one of the worst final arcs I've ever read. It leaves a bad taste in my mouth with how bullshit it was. Until that point though, it was top tier.

Helck.

What seems to be a generic overpowered protagonist in a generic fantasy world turns into one of the most gripping and compelling emotional rollercoasters I've been on. Shit get real relatively early on and just keeps topping itself.

Claymore.

I literally cannot recommend this one enough. The art is amazing, the fights are brutal, fast, and explosively bloody, and the pacing is fast enough that you never want to stop reading. And the characters are compelling as fuck, with their own motives and reasons and thats part of what drive the story. Fuck, I just want to reread it.

Pandemonium: Majutsushi no Mura

A short but excellent manga about a cat (the cast are animals) going a to a secret village to have his wish granted. Has a unique art style that does an exceptional job of conveying the emotions of the cast. Combine that with the multiple driving questions that last until the end, and it's something special. Short, but satisfying.

https://mangadex.org/title/43ff67bf...a-kekka-hametsu-flag-ga-houkaishiteiku-ken-ni

Only 7 chapters so far but it seems to be pretty interesting. Basically massive tokutatsu fanboy dies and gets reincarnated as super scummy asshole noble villain, just after losing to likely protag, which leads to him being disowned. But fortunately enough for fanboy none of the memories of the asshole noble he reincarnated as were included, but he has to deal with having no knowledge of the world he's in now and absolute rock bottom reputation. But his new life's little brother is still willing to be kind to him despite his previous self evidently being a massive scumbag, and Toku fanboy sees no reason why he shouldn't be kind to his new little brother in turn, which nets him a magic item bracelet which can become a full suit of armor, and as established our protag is a toku fanboy so he immediately equates the thing to his henshin device and form.
And so we get a series about a toku fanboy becoming a henshin hero in another world complete with toku references, and the protag basically says a little girl who helped them out by giving some vital information is a hero as well.
Unfortunately Isekai gotta isekai, and pretty early on it's established that unknown to toku fanboy, we have the reincarnated into a world based on a game trope, and several asshole reincarnators. one of which includes a guy reincarnating as the aforementioned likely protag, who is supposed to be the MC for the game the current world is based on. It turns out the asshole MC reincarnator pushed up the defeat of the asshole noble, toku protag would become for the sake of scoring his waifu, and that the reincarnators plan on using this as a chance to form harems for themselves, while completely being incapable of acknowledging the fact they are in an actual world with living people now, instead of just a game.
But we have Toku protag ruining all the plans of the reincarnators, which starts with toku protag firmly getting the girl MC reincarnator wanted next

I Was Reborn and Became a High Elf, but I Got Tired of My Slow Life after 120 Years

Life in the Great Pulha Woodlands is the very definition of stillness and tranquility—and Acer's had enough of it! That's right. Acer isn't quite like the other high elves of the forest. For starters, he remembers living a past life as a human in another world...meaning he's got a taste for meat, adventure, and plenty of other decidedly un-elven things! He's also bored out of his skull after 120 years of the peace and quiet of their serene sylvan lifestyle. So with nothing more than his trusty bow, a bundle of life-giving fruit, and his close bond with the spirits of nature, Acer leaves the monotony of the forest behind to seek a new life, one that's more his pace. See what excitement awaits in the outside world full of humans, dwarves, and even other elves!

Actually way better than it sounds. If you read Frieren, well, this one will make the heartache of the passage of time sting even more.

Hack, you even fully forget it's an isekai... And why wouldn't you, really? Since our guy by current chpaters has lived longer than he did as a human.

My Happy Marriage [Shojo Romantic Drama]
What I want is just a little "happiness." Born into a family that possesses a special ability, a daughter who has not inherited that ability. Miyo Saimori. She was treated as a servant by the half sister who made her ability flourish. She was not loved by her parents, a daughter who was not needed by anyone, even her childhood friend, who was her only ally, was forced to marry her half sister and inherit her home. Miyo who was considered a hindrance was forced to marry in the Kudou family who is rumored to be implacable .... A love story that begins with marriage.

I just stumbled across, and fell down, the Otome Villainess Rabbit Hole.

Holy Shit.

There's so much---

I cannot remember the name of the manga but there is a horror manga where two girls move into their mother's hometown. Something in the water there makes it so everyone has the same eyes, which is related to what may or may not be a Mermaid that hangs around.

Arcs involving the mother and grandmother's past reveals that town's rumor was that the Mermaid had ate a person so they made it sink into the bottom of the lake (which later got used to provide more modern piping and or may have otherwise leaked mermaid essence into the ground-water. This might...not have actually happened (the eating) as the flashbacks from the mermaid's side show her having been a relatively normal child whose dying mother wished for her to have a long life....which seems to have worked but made it so she didn't age.

That obviously did not go well and by the grandmother's time the Mermaid was living in a flooded building by the lake and had lost the concept of wearing clothes and most other interactions/is fairly crazy and desperate for attention.

The grandmother and mermaid were friends to the point of the granny giving the mermaid her extra school uniform so she could have some clothes but aging and the mermaid's time scale became real issues. Then shit hit the fan with such things as the mermaid crushing a frog that kids had been scared of, her eating frogs/fish and such raw for food, and the grandma having a psychological breakdown as a teen due to her brother who had left the town being on the run for involvement with a student communist uprising (Japan has a history of that kind of thing)

The grandma saying stuff like how the mermaid is obviously different from them and no one is like her...sets up the whole "eyes" issue and other events where people end up being fish people/deep ones that the town refuses to acknowledge and erase all records of the person's existence.

Asumi-chan Is Interested In Lesbian Brothels

...what you, want more? This is yuri of the most uncomplex type: porn with a fluffy plot. Asumi had a sexual awakening when her friend Mai kissed her in high school, but her chance comment drove her away. Now she's in Tokyo for university, still nursing a crush, and she hears from her friend that Mai is working in a lesbian brothel. One problem: the way it works is you never see the worker's faces, and it's been over seven years. Who knows what she looks like now?

Obviously, she must try each lady one by one until she selects Mai. With a student lifestyle and budget, this will take a while.

Know any "Realistic Robot" mecha novels?

Admittedly could have "magic" as an element, just please nothing like Spiral Power which makes it so that hot blood/determination empowers/strengthens the machinery? That goes against having actual skills and strengths

Maybe "magic" like Knights&Magic and Break Blade at most

The plotline with the katana girl going to their married friend to get impregnated instead of trying to send a letter to the MC or anything weirded me out

Which chapters are those? I want to see
Chapters 13 and 14. Though part of the reasoning for it is half elves aren't treated very well and end up in an awkward position of not being as long lived as full elves but too long lived to comfortably live with humans. Also, as much as she loved Aesir it's not like she really ask him to have kids with her. It would cause way too much emotional turmoil for everyone involved.

Kimi Wa 008 has the coolest Image Spots.

Also, Nobara (the scrawny nerd guy) gets surprisingly hardcore, with the aid of the herculean Belt.
I mean...

For a guy who's every other scene screams "Comedic sidekick" and "Nerdy noncombatant" he occasionally starts going way out of his lane in the coolest way possible.

The main characters are part of a spy agency fighting against an evil faction of genetically modified supersoldiers.
The MC just got captured and imprisoned and his own side wanted to write him off as dead. His two friends got permission to launch a suicide mission to rescue him.

The rescue team is made up of only two people, to storm the entire enemy faction hideout.
The hypercompetent anime-sword-girl love-interest, and the nerdy vest friend who has basically been a noncombatant so far.
Except the best friend isn't having it.

"I will not be a burden."

And then he starts fucking doping like it's the Pharmaceutical Olympics, knowing the excruciating agony that it's going to put him in later, (assuming he even survives that long) and he starts pummelling genetically modified super-soldiers with such fury that they mistake him for four identical dudes.

"Power is strength."

When a mfer starts talking in inverted speech-bubbles out of nowhere, you know he's about to do some gangster shit.

Spoilers for chapter 237 now.

That's a whole diffrent kind of strength.
My boy Nohara is looking kinda cool.

And of course, the response.

Not bad, nerdboy.

Edit: Breaking fucking news

I knew Nohara was about to ball out, but what the fuck is this?
Did that motherfucker just shoot down a spaceship with his sword?

Edit2: I just watched a man fight a Captcha system for the fate of all the world.

I read Kenichi History's Mightiest Disciple

I know it's pretty generic by now, but it's still great to see how sheer hard work + good teaching/diligence/review/help + support, can really make a guy go Badass

Talent is nice and all, but without sheer passion, it won't do much….but if there is sheer passion and hard work and maybe outside help, sheer muscle memory can be vastly increased.

Plus, working on something you love or are interested in, can really help. Kenichi started martial arts to defend himself from bullies, but I think he legit has respect and love for martial arts, just no killing.

Kenichi is neat.
Kimi Wa 008 feels weird to read because it reuses several character designs (the main protaganist is literally just a Kenichi clone) but it's really cool.
It's also finished. Completed.

At how many chapters, because mangafreak I get a sense isn't complete

Mangafreak says it's ongoing

So there are likely raws

Maybe it's set to end on chapter 300 or something after a bit more epilogue?
I dunno.
Chapter 297 has a very definitive end-point though.
They sort through all of their interpersonal drama and then the main character's father goes home to his family
Huge 'it's over' vibes.

I just want to see the ending for everything, rather not wait more

Weird request, but anyone got a math-related manga rec?

Only ones that come to my mind would be ones with gambling or weird games were a bunch of people play to get a lot of money. Ones before the trend of Death games became more popular. Some challenges were heavily math-oriented.

Eh, more interested in more towards the math side than the probability ones. Thanks anyways.

. . .

Check the Manga Guide series, it has a basic SoL story mix with education of the manga title such as The Manga Guide to Regression Analysis.

Simply find the one with the title of a particular mathematical topic you want, and hope it has been translated.

According to wikipedia, it has 50 vol. and not all of them has been translated yet.

Noice. Thanks. Now if you'll excuse me, I have a new series to binge.
