Naruto Est Imperare Orbi Universo (Dio Quest)

[X] "Wait! May I please come with you? I want to learn shurikenjutsu too!" Adorable and lonely orphan? Check. Eagerness to learn as contrasted with Shikamaru's lack of enthusiasm? Check. Chance to display your prowess with thrown weaponry? Check. Opportunity to get to know your potential underling even better? Check.

I'm not sure the puppy eyes will have Nara-mom pull a complete 180 in personality and stated position.

It's not really a 180. We're not trying to get her to let Shikamaru stay, we're asking her to let us come with them. She might be interested in seeing if we can motivate her son.

[X] Shurikenjutsu it is

Shikamaru raises an eyebrow at you.

His mother looks slightly surprised. "You aren't learning already?" Her eyes flick over to Raccoon's hiding spot.

"No, ma'am," you say, shaking your head.

She purses her lips. "... come along for now, then."

[X] Small smile, big thank you.

[X] Look over in Raccoon's direction. No sense making the same mistake Shikamaru just made.

Could we plausibly ask, "Um...what's shurikenjutsu?"

Or does exposure to ANBU mean we already know, without a doubt.

You undoubtedly already know. Raccoon knows you know, so you can't work that angle.

It's a shame. If you could work that angle, things would go beautifully for you.

No kidding. It's the perfect next step for looking like a socially isolated child that just wants friends. And Shika is clan heir famous for their friendship with two other clans.

Hello Ino-Shika-Cho, how d'ya do?

Another question: should we be able to pinpoint where Raccoon is hiding or would that be a slip?

Man, this thread moves fast. Should be an interesting one to watch shape up.

Is "True Lady" still going in any capacity though, if not now then perhaps at some point?

If they know our senses are well developed, eavesdropping will be harder.

Fuck it, let's get the Genius Train rolling.

You smile. You may be a little rusty, but you're sure you can still play the 'why can't you be more like him?' game. After all, you've come much closer to actual perfection in the time since your days posing as the 'perfect' son.

Of course, it would not do to overshadow Shikamaru completely; adoption into a ninja family would be preferable to living with Utako, but ideally you should be able to achieve a greater level of autonomy than that. And the best way to achieve that goal is to demonstrate a sense of maturity and responsibility in coordination with showing off your skill.

You let your smile fade a little bit in hesitation. "But..." You look to the place where Raccoon hides and ask a hopeful question with your eyes.

Raccoon and Mrs Nara are rather taken aback, but both quickly mask it.

"Don't worry," Shikamaru's mother whispers, "they know where we live. They'll follow along just fine."

She offers you her other hand, and you take it.

Yoshino - her husband called her name when the three of you came in the front door - is a competent teacher. Certainly far beyond the old drunk who originally taught you; Shikamaru isn't even a quarter the age you were when you learned to throw knives and he's already hitting five out of ten. An astounding level of coordination for someone so young.

His mother smiles and praises him for doing so well, but criticism follows fast on the heels of her kind words, outlining suggestions which could improve his record.

So. A success-obsessed mother. That should prove useful; if she keeps this up, you'll reap the benefits of having a properly-trained asset without having to motivate him yourself, which would look suspicious.

Eventually Yoshino comes to the end of her lecture, and Shikamaru nods wearily but dutifully before sitting down. She turns to you with an expression of kind concern.

"Naruto-kun, can you please repeat back to me everything I told you about handling shuriken and kunai safely?"

You do so in full, and she nods approvingly. "Very good. You can try now, if you like."

[X] Go all out. Call upon The World, hit every bullseye, and let time proceed.

[X] Hit every bullseye conventionally at your normal speed.

[X] Hit every bullseye at a much lower speed. No sense letting on how fast you really are.

[X] Throw at your normal speed, but miss a few targets - say, three out of the ten. You're aiming to be seen as a prodigy, not someone who's already had training.

[X] Throw at a much lower speed, and miss a few targets. Keep your profile low - if it appears you need help in shurikenjutsu, even if only a little, you'll have an excuse to see Shikamaru more often.

I think the question we need to ask is, will these people be able to tell that we're deliberately missing targets? Right now they're watching our form so they may well notice if they're looking at our technique first and our results second.

Yoshino's a chuunin; you're faster than her at your full speed, so she won't notice.

Is shikamaru's dad there? Or any anbu that we can see? Cause they might be able to tell.

And Raccoon, if we're asked to demonstrate our full speed for her too?

Not that outstripping a chunin at two isn't already ohdeargodwhy....if this doesn't lead to a bad end Minato will probably be blamed somehow.

And then we make a show of 'Practicing' until we get 100/100... At the end of 'Class'.
