On a Pale Horse (Umamusume/Youjo Senki)

Urara-san was actually some sort of undercover morale officer
She's honestly pretty close to the truth. The canon explanation for Haru being at Tracen is that she completely bombed the application/tryouts but the recruiter was so impressed by her ability to spread good vibes that they let her in anyway.

Can't wait to see how more much anti-Russian and anti-German rants are brought up now that the grandparents are here. Shirogane has already has a dim view on Turks that I don't believe she ever had in any of her previous lives so clearly her Polish mother and grandparents have influenced her.

even if she has now watched plenty
she has been too busy catching up,
'has' -> 'had' in both cases.

I think there might have been a couple other cases where you slipped into present-tense, too.

I've seen it before in one where she ended up in Psychonauts as her 3rd life.
There is also the Chansey one.
Links?

Highly recommend both of those.
The epilogues of Psychoprotective were especially great:
As the chapter titles give away about the epilogues, they follow several more of that Tanya's reincarnations, in a neatly condensed manner.

It's Time to Du-du-du-duel!

"Alright, Shirogane-chan, explain to me what happened."

"I'm not really sure, Toujou-sensei. I know, from working in parents' restaurant's kitchen, that it is good practice to announce when you are stepping behind someone who is cooking, so that they do not turn around suddenly and bump into you, and furthermore to warn them if you are carrying something dangerous, such as a pot of hot soup or a carving knife. Apparently Flash Stepping, despite her interest in cooking, was not aware of this, and interpreted 'behind you with a knife' as some sort of threat. Things escalated from there."

"Only you, Shiro. You understand she has registered a complaint with the school, and issued a formal challenge to a duel?"

"... while I inherited my grand-aunt's cavalry sabre along with her uniform, no side-arm was included. Will the school be providing weapons?"

"Weap- no, Shiro, a racing duel. You and she will face off in a one-on-one race, with the loser being expelled while the winner inherits their team position."

"Ah. What is the setup for the race?"

"As the challenged party you have the choice of conditions. It has to be from a recognised, organized race, so no designing a set of rules so that only you can win, but otherwise, anything goes."

"..."

"Shiro. Why are you grinning like that."

"Sensei, I'm going to need your help setting this up properly..."

As Flash Stepping walked onto the track, her confident swagger faltered at the sights she was seeing. At several points around the one-kilometre oval, tables had been set up, each covered in bottles of water. At the starting line, the usual gates had been removed, and a crowd of several dozen racers were limbering up; her trainer had warned her that Shirogane had invited additional participants, though only hers and Shirogane's relative placements would count for the outcome of the duel, but inexplicably most of the crowd appeared to be humans rather than uma.

Most worrying, though, was the scoreboard, which appeared to have been enhanced with extra lap indicators. A lot of extra lap indicators. In fact, there were now... she counted again... forty-two lap indicators.

"Flash Stepping."

"Eeep!" Flash Stepping turned to find the little witch had somehow snuck up behind her again.

Shirogane Orzeł merely looked at her in bemusement as she tried to get her heart-rate back under control. "If you're ready, Flash Stepping, let's join the starting line and we can begin."

There was a dramatic pause that had to be deliberate, no matter how blasé Shirogane looked.

"Welcome to the Boston Marathon."

Very nice omake, I like that Shirogane was being nice even when picking a race that played to her strengths.
Picking the 42km Boston Marathon which is 'just' a marathon rather than something like the 160km Tevis cup, which is a horse riding, cross-country endurance race that must be completed in under 24 hours. It would probably wreck most of the Tracen racers as they train for a very different style of racing.

I love the implication that Shirogane was all set for a sword fight or pistols at dawn
What, you think Shirogane is some kind of honourless, cowardly cur who'd run from duels? If Shirogane had also inherited her grand-aunts sword and pistol she'd have shown up ready to duel with them the next day.

The Boston Marathon was the superior choice. Shirogane hasn't trained for ultra-long-distance endurance racing either, so with the Tevis cup there would be a risk she might not be able to complete the course, which would make it a tie even if Flash didn't complete it either. 42km, on the other hand, is merely a particularly long and busy day of delivery-running, which she knows she can do, and certainly faster than Flash can.

Point of fact, Shirogane does actually have the sabre. It was a dress uniform though, so she doesn't have the pistol.
Fixed!

She could probably run the Steel Ball Run, from what I've worked out, 6000km in 116 days, sits around roughly 50-52km a day, idk how difficult it would be to perform to that standard each day, it doesn't seem infeasible but I literally know nothing about horses and horse racing so I could very well be completely wrong.

What? And miss 116 days of classes? Never!

I wonder if Shirogane's trainer will try to play some mindgames with the other umas before the debut race. Maybe talk about how the debut race can make or break a racer's entire career? Talk about crushing dreams? Maybe talk about how Shirogane should treat this like a long sprint, and bait the other racers into exhausting themselves early? She knows Shirogane is largely unaffected by such talk, but the rest of the competition won't be.

That feels like sabotage and cheating. It may not be by rules as written, but I can and will bet anybody who hears of such tactics would be fucking furious.

Such talk should be used only by competitors in that manner, not others. It is also wildly out of character for Hana, y'know Shirogane's trainer?

Shirogane did unintentionally do stuff like this, but it was and expected of her because athletes and competitors do stuff like it. It's not something a coach/trainer on the other hand should do.

That it is likely allowed doesn't mean it's approved or that there won't be significant pushback if done.

Shirogane in or gone through puberty if so which gender does she like?

"What does a little uma call light?" the first human asked, before gesturing at the older umamusume. "Drift-san here's running with like thirty kilos."

"Just a light load," Drift-san laughed.

"About fifteen kilos," Shirogane replied. She wasn't trying to tire herself out.

"Oof, getting outdone by a little girl!" the second human laughed, slapping his own pack.
15 kg is less than 30 kg

This is good stuff! Binged it over yesterday, and hoping we shall see more sooner rather than later-

My impatience aside, though, I do wonder how well Shirogane would do if she took up parkour. I imagine she'd gravitate more towards a highly efficient style, with little creative flair or acrobatics if they mean wasted movement.

Dunno if it would compliment her running skills well, t'was just a thought that occurred with her navigating the concrete jungle and finding a great deal of satisfaction in constantly improving her time/path by avoiding delays and simply finding the shortest way between A and B.

Parkour also probably wouldn't have paired well with her delivery work, since the way she'd be moving would likely toss the food around within its container, which her (I'd assume close to perfect) running form does not.

Still, if she wanted to get back into finding that satisfaction of rapid and smooth navigation, avoiding all obstacles, I think she might find some of it while taking the "roads" less traveled.

Then again, there's probably more than a few laws or policies that heavily discourage such methods of travel, to say the least.

Wonder if there's any competitions/races in that vein that she might find more engaging? They might be further afield, though... Depends on Tokyo's Parkour scene, I suppose.

Do gotta wonder what the "Negaverse" (the theoretical universe in which this Shirogane is a canon character in the UmaMusume series) reactions would be to Shiro on two particular subjects. Her more menacing, looks-like-she's-always-ready-to-fight air (I believe this subject has been raised before, still can't help but wonder), and her seemingly endless stamina. Though my curiosity about the latter stems more from the potential for certain types of "memes."

The SFW side of the site this may be, but would any blame me for my curioisty on QQ of all places?

Anyway.

I do hope we'll eventually get to see some reactions to Shiro not being super passionate about racing. Or, at least, her not having given it much thought, and kinda sorta going to Tracen on a whim.

"Ah, I see," her senpai's eyes brightened, her tail flicking excitedly even if she did not show it on her face, "and your scholarship has given you the opportunity to pursue your dreams of racing where before it was unfeasible."

"Essentially so," Shirogane agreed, feeling it better not to mention that she had never seriously considered racing at all before recent events changed things.

While I doubt it would go exactly like what shall follow this line, my mind did veer down this path as a theoretical:

"I mean, seriously, Shiro, you've got to be the least enthusiastic racer I've ever seen! Everyone else here works their asses off because racing is all they've ever wanted! What about you?! Do you even care?!"

"Hmm... I mean, yeah? I've put a lot of effort into it..."

"You know what I meant! Do you even want to be a racer, more than anything else?!"

"... not really, no. I'm just here because my parents thought I could do it, and I want to pay them back for the time and care they've invested in me."

"That-! What?! So- so you're just here on a whim!?"

"... Well, when you put it like that.... I guess so. Anyway, I'm kinda busy studying-"

"Don't just brush me off! What could possibly be more important than this, anyway?!"

"Economics."

"... huh?"

"Just hedging my bets. Probably not gonna be on the podium enough to live off race winnings alone- too many racers that are faster than me- so I've been studying other stuff to figure out a proper career that I can live off of, and still pay my family back."

Or something like that... Kinda hoping Shiro will accidentally say something along the lines of "pursuing a more proper career," anything that lets slip she doesn't believe racing to be a "legitimate career prospect," if only for herself.

I just hope she'd phrase it in a way that implies she thinks dismissively of racing in general. Be funny to see her piss her classmates off with that kind of talk.

Though that could also easily stumble down a path that'd annoy readers, so it probably wouldn't be for the best.

A man can dream, though.

Anyway, that's all from me, folks.

Hoping we'll get more from our favorite Uma of Prey in the future! Seriously, I think there'll be plenty of jokes or rumors about her name and "predatory" status. The White-Silver Eagle is a truly dangerous raptor, and she'll hunt you down without mercenary.
