1. Aura is magic. Ozpin said so. So aura will kill an esper, especially with such a passive presence.
2. It's funny, you don't care, and you don't care about the character's feelings. The main thing is what you want. For example, I also want Ax to stop messing around and finish off the clones. But alas, his life is in his hands.

Of course I don't care. I literally said I 'wish' he heals him, did you miss that? If you think respecting someone's desire to be hurt to deal with compound childhood trauma is fine I have nothing to say to that, to each his own.

Season 5, training arc, Ozpin ponders the nature of aura and eventually says that he doesn't know what it is. If it's not science, it's magic, which means it will kill the esper due to a conflict with personal reality.

Ozpin has magic, he can even gift magic so it is a known subject to him. If said Ozpin then says he doesn't know what Aura is, then it clearly isn't 'magic'.

In fact this makes it safer because the reason Espers cannot use magic is because their power is a continuous running spell so attempting to use magic is like two different spells simultaneously crushing into one another. Aura being completely removed from means there will be no magical interference.

Of course this is speculation, but I feel it makes more sense than Aura being magic.
