Video Games General

As for details about the Switch 2.

  • Screen is a 7.9 inch 1080p at 120fps in handheld and docked outputs to 4k. Both will support HDR, but keep the Switch 1's thickness
  • Dock is fully reworked with a cooling fan and wired network built in.
  • Audio has been improved and support for 3d spatial audio added for supporting games
  • Storage base is 256GB, though you will need Micro SD Express cards for expansion. No reusing your old MicroSD card from the switch.
  • Joy-con along with the mouse mode have multiple improvements including magnetic attachment, larger sL/sR buttons, and bigger sticks plus The C Button for Game Chat. Will be update pro controllers with said button and back paddles.
  • Full voice chat is baked in with Game Chat. Can be used handheld or docked, has built in noise canceling software and supports screen sharing plus parental controls. Also there is a camera accessory that functions with Game Chat and titles like Mario Party Jamboree Switch 2 edition
  • Support for Game sharing, the old DS IR play system, will be part of several titles
  • Nintendo Online Expansion Pass adding GameCube titles and will make a wireless GC controller.
  • Certain games like both Zelda titles, Metroid Prime 4 and Mario Party will have the ability to upgrade to the switch 2 version for a fee.
  • Strong AAA love as Switch 2 ports of Elden Ring, FF7 Remake, Cyberpunk 2077, Hitman, Project 007, Split Fiction, Yakuza 0 Director's Cut, Daemon X Machina 2, Bravely Default and Borderlands 4 all confirmed.
  • And first party includes Hyrule Warriors: The Imprisonment War, Kirby Air Riders, and Donkey Kong Bananza along with Mario Kart World
  • Finally the price: $449 for the base system and $499 for the Mario Kart World bundle.

Ok, that's a weird mix of stuff. Not really sure it'd be worth buying a Switch 2 for just that title alone though.

Conversation rates aside--though it should be noted that €90 is nearly $100--this seems to indicates that America will also see a pricing difference between digital and physical versions, meaning Mario Kart World is at least $80.

Sadly, this one also has a multiplayer focus. I wonder what the hell is going on at FromSoft to have two of these games almost back to back.

I can only share the source. It's not like I want FromSoft/Nintendo to do badly, but I was incredibly disappointed with it and the Direct in general.

I hope Nintendo can course correct on a few things given how much of an issue game pricing seems to be for people (there's a reason it wasn't on the Direct proper), but for now I'll wait and see.

To me the pricetag is a fly in the ointment but no more than that. I'm looking forward to Zelda and DK and I can't wait to see what else the system has in store.

I'm fine paying for games or hardware (the sheer amount of videogame stuff I have wouldn't make sense otherwise), but $80 bucks for Nintendo games that never go on sale? Selling their tech demo game? $80 controller and $60 camera? It feels like Nintendo is just going crazy because they have a success in their hands with the switch.

DK was the only game that looked interesting to me, but I have to admit it did look great. Having to deal with ps4-level graphics and probably 30fps on a FromSoft game is a no for me. I hope the 30fps was only for the trailer and it's just a timed exclusivity.
 
The real question when it comes to the price of games is ultimately a matter of subjective value. Is this game worth X amount of dollars to me? Tears of the Kingdom was worth the $70 price tag to me because I enjoyed BotW and I also had a lot of fun with TotK, still have a bunch of stuff to do in it. Is Mario Kart worth the $80 as someone who doesn't play online? Not really, so I'd probably skip out on that one. Would I spend $80 on the Okami sequel when it comes out? In a heartbeat.

The real question is how is this going to affect the industry at large. This won't stay as just Nintendo's price in the long run if it works for them. Besides that, we also have to take into account that physical games will be even more expensive apparently at 90 euros--another push towards their all digital future.

It's important taking into account the average gamer can afford or remember that for many third world countries there aren't good regional prices either.

I've paid $70 for games on PS5 and I don't regret it, but the truth is that I stopped buying nearly as much there and prices were one of the reasons. I buy a ton of games day 1 on Steam thanks to much more reasonable prices, good support and their refund policy. Being able to afford it is a completely different matter from willing to pay that much money for a Switch game.

My main criteria for deciding if a game is worth it are: How many hours of work to afford the game, how much time I'm likely to put into it, and franchise. I'd have to work 4 hours to afford Mario Kart. I'm not likely to put very much time into it. I'm not a huge fan of the franchise. So it's a skip. Conversely there's the new Raidou Kuzunoha remake. It's $50, so about 2.2 hours of work, it's a Megami Tensei game, a franchise which I love and have a lot of experience with and know I'm likely to put around 100 hours in. It's pretty much an instant buy.

This is definitely going to cause people to buy fewer brand new releases per year. Especially if other companies start to price match. With GTA6 expected to be $100 on release, chances are that will be the only game a lot of people buy that year. Especially in countries where it's more expensive, like Canada, Brazil, or Australia. It's also going to generate an increase in piracy for sure.

JRPGs of the sort are a very good value both in enjoyment and time. Sadly, it didn't seem like there was anything too interesting on that front in the Direct (would have loved to see a new Fire Emblem or Xeno game).

Yeah, I can't see most parents being OK with a $450 handheld (plus taxes) and $80/$90 games. I completely agree with you on the GTA 6 part too. I can see more people going for PC gaming instead of consoles if they keep going that way, especially since you can both buy cheaper and pirate games easier.
 
Might pick up Prime 4 and Pokemon ZX if they're on the Switch but that might be the last of Nintendo for me. It'll suck but they kinda lost their minds with those prices.

I just play a lot of RPGs so Raidou is what first came to mind about new game that would be an instant buy. One that I know I'm not buying is Bleach Rebirth of Souls. Despite my love of Bleach I'm sick of BamCo arena fighters. Metroid Prime 4 is a game I'd probably buy if I already had a Switch since I've recently become a bigger fan of Metroidvania's than I used to be. I also tend to buy fighting games kind of impulsively, like Melty Blood and Under Night 2. I kind of regret buying the Strive DLC though.

Raidou is also gonna be on Steam so there's that.

I fucken loved Raidou back in the day. They changed the gameplay to be like the second game's which is great because the first one has a better story and my favorite final boss ever just because of what it is but, the second had better combat and you could have two demons out at once.
 
I'm certainly interested in Bravely Default, as I never got it for my 3DS.

I played it a lot when it first came out so I think it's worth a buy if you enjoy the early Final Fantasy games. It's a spin-off and I think it's similar to FF1 in a few ways but you pretty much always have a clear goal. And the job system can get pretty crazy. You can mix and max jobs and the abilities they give you for some broken set ups. I really like the Brave/Default system. It's extremely risk/reward based and it works well for both offensive and defensive players. Using Brave costs you your next turn and you can do it up to 3 times, and Default skips your turn so you get an extra one next round, also up to 3. So do you Default a few times and risk the boss blowing you up before you can act, or risk up to 3 turns of no actions for more damage/set up/hope you kill.

For story it's typical "go deal with the elemental crystals" stuff but I really enjoy the characters and their growth, even the bosses. The latter half of the story is incredibly grindy though. Like, you're right along side the characters going "what the hell are we even doing here anymore?" type of grind for a few hours but it does serve a purpose.

Even games that are just "Nintendo Switch 2 Edition" can go for $80. Case in point: Tears of the Kingdom, Super Mario Party and Kirby and The Forgotten Land.

So I'd say that $70 games will be the minority and slightly lower budget games or something of the sort.
 
Interview with Hidetaka Miyazaki on The Duskbloods is now up on Nintendo's website.

From the looks of things Duskbloods is continuing the experiment of applying the Souls-born playstyle to multi-player formats outside of summons/invasions started with Nightreign. Thankfully Miyazaki-sensei confirmed that From Software is not following other, smoother brained companies in focusing only in multi-player only games.
