Not a huge amount.

I don't make use of any named characters from Polity canon (which leaves me free to use my own at will) and any references are explained either in an attached glossary or within the text itself.

In short: the characters come from an alternate future some five hundred seventy-three years hence. Humanity has spread through the stars and are mainly governed from Earth by AIs. Artificial intelligence is widespread and AIs are on a level footing with humans, rights-wise. Genetic adaptation and cosmetic body alteration is quite common, as are various types of cybernetic implants.

I do highly recommend the series. It's a good read.
