At the Ice Estate, Yuichiro sparred with Murata.
Yuichiro, by this point, had already surpassed Murata in terms of swordsmanship. However, Murata's strength and experience closed the distance between them. His own ability in Wind Breathing also served to disturb Yuichiro's rhythm.
Dodging a swift strike, Murata threw his sword at Yuichiro. He blocked it then got punched in the gut.
"That's cheating!" Yuichiro complained.
Sanemi, sitting at the engawa, laughed. Cracking his knuckles, he jumped in, itching for his own fight. Nursing his bruise, Yuichiro rested while observing the two hashira fight.
Murata did his best, but Sanemi was too violent. His stubbornness proved to be his greatest strength.
They laid on the ground, panting heavily while bruised, sweaty, and tired. The stars in the sky twinkled, and the clean air invigorated their lungs. Several broken training swords were sprawled out in the courtyard as a cool breeze swept around them.
"Any new signs of the Infinity Castle?" Sanemi asked, patting down his clothes.
Murata, sweeping up the remains of the swords, shook his head. "Not since Obanai and I found it."
The newly dubbed 'Infinity Castle' brought up concerning implications for the Demon Slayer Corps. If this blood demon art served as Muzan's base of operations, then it would be nearly impossible to corner him naturally.
In a worst case scenario, he could hide in there as long as he wished. Then, after the hashira died of old age, he could step out and continue with his unnatural existence.
Unfortunately, even with months of searching, Murata and Obanai were the only ones to witness the Infinity Castle. The demon and her snake also vanished. Despite this, demon activity remained as high as ever.
"You're lucky as hell, you know? You attract strong demons like a magnet. Maybe I'll request to go on a mission with you," Sanemi said.
Murata sincerely wished he wouldn't. Only someone like Sanemi would grumble about not finding demon moons to fight.
They spoke and shared memories as battle-hardened friends, enjoying the brief peace in the estate.

Giyu walked in, his silent and urgent stride propelling him towards a dining room.
Murata prepared the meal as Giyu rested from his journey.
"I sent the kakushi away, and I had extra time," Murata explained, setting down the plates.
Giyu nodded, and they ate together. Wasting no time, Murata began his barrage of questions.
"The siblings you saved, how are they doing?"
After gulping, Giyu answered. "They are fine. However, Urokodaki has told me that Nezuko has been sleeping for nearly a year now."
"She is the demon, right?" Murata confirmed.
Giyu responded positively. "Besides her, Tanjiro is doing well. Unfortunately, since he missed Final Selection this year, he will have to wait until after the winter to take the next one."
It made sense. Though, even with this setback, Tanjiro would be taking Final Selection about half a year, at the earliest.
"Does anyone else know about Nezuko?"
Giyu shook his head. "As hashira, Makomo and Sabito have been extremely busy. Demon attacks have been rising, so they haven't had the chance to visit Urokodaki this year. I do visit occasionally in place of them. Luckily, Urokodaki has shared your same resolve, and offered his life to defend me."
"I actually owe you a lot more," Murata said. "After all, I didn't expect you to keep this a secret."
"That is true," Giyu admitted. "I wanted to talk to Makomo about it, but you seem to understand the situation better than I do. And, she will be more angry with you than me, seeing as how this was an order from a hashira."
"If you want to spin it that way, I don't mind," Murata said.
Murata listened as he drank, letting Giyu fill the space with his words.
"His younger brother, Takeo, has also been training to be a demon slayer," Giyu said.
Murata choked, thumping his chest as he swallowed the last of his tea. Going through his memories, Murata tried to remember his letters with Giyu.
Now that he was thinking about it, Giyu never specified names in his letters, and only referred to them as the Kamado siblings.
Giyu, noticing the strange outburst, looked on with confusion. "You seem surprised? I mentioned siblings in my letters, so I thought you knew."
"I assumed there were only two."
Shaking his head, Giyu corrected him and counted with his fingers. "There are four. Tanjiro, Nezuko, Takeo, and Hanako."
The fact that half the Kamado family were alive made Murata feel happy. Tanjiro did not lose as much as he originally did.
"How are the other two?"
"Takeo is training. While I do not doubt his ability to pass Final Selection, I doubt his compatibility with Water Breathing. Hanako is still young, so she has been helping Urokodaki. Actually, Tanjiro forbid Hanako from becoming a demon slayer."
"But he allowed his brother?"
"Takeo was persistent, starving himself until Tanjiro budged."
Murata raised his brow. It was a stubborn thing, especially when facing Tanjiro, a boy with an extreme amount of stubbornness himself.
"While I did ask for you to come here to spar and exchange information, I had another purpose in mind. Would I be able to visit the Kamado siblings myself?"
Giyu stopped for a few moments, thinking about the request.
"I'll ask Urokodaki. If he accepts, then I do not mind," he said. Writing a letter, he gave it to his crow.

Urokodaki, with his signature tengu mask, walked up to them. He nodded at Giyu and looked at Murata.
"So, you are the Ice Hashira," Urokodaki remarked, showing them inside his house.
"I thank you for your hospitality," Murata said.
Urokodaki waved him off. Hanako greeted them, and she began preparing refreshments.
"Any friend of my students is a friend of mine. Though, I presume you have a reason, going out of your way to be here."
Murata thanked Hanako for the drink and addressed Urokodaki. "I wanted to personally thank you for taking care of the Kamado family. Especially Nezuko."
"I was concerned at first, even with Giyu's conviction. But, the master has sanctioned this situation, and he trusts that you will be able to handle it," Urokodaki said.
"Do not worry about their safety. I'm prepared for any backlash I'll receive from the others," Murata stated.
"I pray that you will. Now, did you come here just to visit, or did you have something else in mind?"
"I want to observe Nezuko and help out both Tanjiro and Takeo, if I can. It won't be long, since I'll have to return to my duties."
Urokodaki understood. They got up, and he led Murata to a dark room.
Inside, Nezuko was sleeping peacefully as Hanako watched over her.
"Has she been like this the whole time?" Murata asked Hanako.
She answered quietly. "Yes. It's been a year."
"And she has not eaten any humans, is that right?"
Urokodaki spoke up. "Despite being a new demon, Nezuko has not consumed a single human. It is my theory that she gains her energy through sleeping."
It made sense, yet Murata has always wondered about how simple it seemed. Even if Nezuko had incredible willpower and love for her family, that alone couldn't force a demon to change their entire physiology.
If that was all it took, it would be raise more questinos. For instance, Murata remembered how Sanemi described his mother. Yet, his mother attacked her own children, so what made Nezuko unique?
Murata's lack of skill or knowledge in science meant he couldn't pursue this curiosity on his own.
Stepping outside, he watched Giyu correct Tanjiro's and Takeo's movements.
Even with Giyu's guidance, Murata could see the slight hesitation in Tanjiro's strikes and the lack of comfort in Takeo's swings.
Giyu left them to practice on their own as he reached Murata.
"Tanjiro can use Water Breathing, but Takeo seems to struggle with it," Murata concluded. Giyu agreed with him, watching the two struggle.
"I think they would appreciate your help," Giyu said. He went inside without further explanation.
Water Breathing, Seventh Form: Drop Ripple Thrust
Tanjiro performed a thrust with his sword. The form, while slow, did not have terrible execution. But, it was obvious to Murata that Tanjiro would never truly master Water Breathing.
It was even worse for Takeo, who tried performing the seventh form but overexerted himself on the last segment of the movement. He fell to the ground.
Murata popped his neck and hands. If he wanted to help things along, then who could blame him?

Thank you for the chapter, tanjiro is going to become a beast isn't he? And with murata training against sun breath users I could see him growing even more than he currently is.

My first thought would be "Rain Breathing". Teal kinda seems close to Muchirio's sword, and Mist is supposed to be an offshoot of wind. Considering what Murata has done so far, part of me might wonder about looking into Thunder breathing, or Sound breathing if he could talk with Uzui (I suppose in that case we might change the name to "storm" breathing). Even if the styles aren't a good source to draw from, asking about adding other tools to his arsenal to augment his abilities seems a natural evolution.
I will say Thunder might be a bit of a stretch, it all about quick draws/fast hits, where as Wind and Water are respectively mostly about rapid circular movement and adaptable flowing motion, Water and Wind actually sound pretty compatible when you break them down, but neither seem like they'd lead themselves directly to Thunder Breathing. Sound on the other hand, despite being an offshoot of Thunder, actually seems pretty suitable to how this take on Murata is going, the idea is moving in a such a way(+plus throwing in distractions like bombs that throw out a lot of light and noise) to throw off an opponent.

The kanji for 'hashira' has nine strokes, which has led many in the corps to assume the maximum number of hashira allowed was nine. However, the Ubuyashiki family has no rule or quota dictating the number of hashira.
Indeed, there have been many times in the history of the corps where there were as few as one hashira and as many as ten. Though, it is important to realize that the title of hashira was just that, a title. Some eras have boasted hashira that today may seem weak, while others have stood the test of time.
The two most powerful era of demon slayers include the Sengoku Golden Age and the Taisho Era.
There are currently 11 hashira. This was the order in which they were promoted:
1. Stone Hashira - Himejima Gyomei
2. Sound Hashira - Uzui Tengen
3. Water Hashira - Ishikawa Makomo
4. Wind Hashira - Shinazugawa Sanemi
5. Ice Hashira - Sato Murata
6. Flood Hashira - Matsuda Sabito
7. Mist Hashira - Iguro Seiko
8. Insect Hashira - Kocho Shinobu
9. Flame Hashira - Rengoku Kyojuro
10. Snake Hashira - Iguro Obanai

Arm wrestling. Tengen once joked about Murata's soft-looking hands (they weren't), which caused him to start an arm wrestling contest between the hashira.

3. Sabito - Surprisingly Strong (What is he hiding?)
4. Sanemi / Kyojuro / Mitsuri - Strong
5. Murata - Somewhat Strong (Maybe he should stop spending so much time in the Ubuyashiki library?)
6. Seiko / Makomo - Normal
7. Obanai - A Little Weak

Grip strength. They used progressively denser and stronger pieces of wood.
1. Gyomei - His large hands were perfect for this test.
2. Tengen - It makes sense, especially the way he uses his blades.
3. Murata - A surprising contender. Could've surpassed Tengen, but the scars on his hands flared up and he stopped.
4. Sanemi / Sabito / Kyojuro - They tied on the same piece of wood. Sabito claims to have damaged it the most (it was actually Kyojuro).
5. Obanai - Another unexpected ranking. What's up his sleeve?
6. Mitsuri - Could have placed higher, but didn't want to get splinters.
7. Makomo / Seiko - Tied. They understood the assignment.
8. Shinobu - Didn't participate. Her lithe hands were more suited towards medicine.
Running Speed. The running took place from one end of the Ice Estate to the other end.
1. Tengen - Just like a ninja, his speed makes others look twice. Who would have thought the flashiest guy was the hardest to catch?
2. Sabito - Similar to his breathing art, the way he runs is similar to a disaster coming towards you.
3. Sanemi - The way he runs into battle is like a hurricane.
4. Makomo - Surprisingly nimble, her strides make her appear like a swift river.
5. Gyomei - Even worse than Sabito. Instead of a simple disaster, the very earth shakes when he sprints.
6. Shinobu - Light on her feet. Unfortunately, her endurance could use improvement.
7. Murata - He stumbled, but quickly regained his bearings.
8. Kyojuro - Explosive like a raging campfire.
9. Obanai - Maybe if he ran in a straight line instead of moving like a snake, he could have placed higher.
10. Seiko - It was difficult to see her. Maybe she's obscuring her final form?
11. Mitsuri - She tried her best, but maybe should have ran on a lighter stomach.
Openness. Ranked on how easily they can talk to others and socialize.
1. Kyojuro - 95%
2. Mitsuri / Gyomei / Sabito - 90%
3. Tengen - 88%
4. Shinobu / Makomo - 85%
5. Murata - 75%
6. Sanemi / Obanai - 60%
7. Seiko - 17%
Approachability/Kindness. Ranked on how easy it is to talk to them.
1. Mitsuri - The Love Hashira is cheerful, smiles a lot, and is a source of positivity for the people around her. She can even interact with the Snake and Mist Hashira.
2. Kyojuro - The Flame Hashira burns bright and he presents himself accordingly. His presence is simply motivating! He inspires many of the junior members of the corps.
3. Makomo - Her calm and experienced demeanor is soothing to others. Don't badmouth Giyu in front of her. Otherwise, she'll discipline you.
4. Shinobu - She has a kind smile, though she can be very blunt in that nice tone of hers. It's very confusing, but even the other hashira rely on her.
5. Sabito - His presence can seem overwhelming, but he just follows a personal code. Respect that, and he'll talk all day to you. Many of the female kakushi and demon slayers find him dashing.
6. Murata - His face may look ordinary, yet his eyes are old. Not difficult to talk to, but he always seems to be deep in thought.
7. Tengen - He can be a bit overbearing. Also, he talks about his wives a lot.
8. Gyomei - The way he cries while chanting is unnerving to others. However, many people look up to his strength and presence.
9. Obanai - His persistent glare is difficult to bear. He does get along with the Wind and Love Hashira. Sometimes annoyed by how the Mist Hashira treats him.
10. Sanemi - Very scary to talk to. Feels like walking into a typhoon.
11. Seiko - Quiet and attractive. She dislikes talking, often using paper to interact with others, which makes things complicated. She acts like a mother hen towards the Snake Hashira.
What the hashira think of each other.

Tengen: He is boastful, but not overconfident or insecure of his skills.
Sabito: Dutiful and honorable, he is loyal to others.
Sanemi: He is bashful and honest in his heart. He likes Kanae and visits her often.
Kyojuro: An honest and positive person without bitterness.
Makomo: A calm, thoughtful person. She seems to like Murata.
Mitsuri: A good-natured girl. She seems to like Obanai.
Shinobu: A delicate person who sometimes works too hard.
Obanai: Very sincere and sensitive person. He seems to love Mitsuri.
Murata: He knows more than others see. Enjoys speaking with Makomo and Tengen.

A caretaker at a temple, he raised and cared for nine orphans. Gyomei was an orphan himself. He was happiest at that point in life, even when he was hungry and cold. Unfortunately, after being nearly executed, he has come to distrust most children.

He's the oldest of seven children. With an abusive father and a caring mother, he swore to take care of his family starting from a young age. Has a quick temper, which only makes him angrier, because it reminds him of his father.

A proud and noble son of the Rengoku bloodline. His greatest inspiration is his mother, and even with his father's drinking problem, he promises to teach Senjuro right and correct his father's behavior.

She had a normal childhood growing up. However, due to her oddities, it has made finding a husband difficult. She's grateful for the support she's received from the corps. It has made her more confident and proud of herself.

Shinobu and her sister lived in a well-off family. They were known for being good at treating illnesses. After being saved by Gyomei, she made a promise to her sister. Even now, she works endlessly to quell the growing anger in her heart.
[Obanai]
Being the only son in over three centuries, his torture by the hands of his family has made him distrustful of women. However, he is insecure of himself and has tremendous guilt. He loves Mitsuri, but he is not willing to take the first step until he repays his debt.
[Tengen]
With a paranoid father, he had to endure harsh training. Tengen even killed some of his siblings to survive. But, he lives by moving forward. To be weighed down by his tragedies like a pitiful character, that was something only fools did.
[Sabito]
He was the oldest brother in a family of sisters. His father always taught him to be responsible and reliable, and that a man's greatest strength was his own determination. After being saved by Urokodaki, he still tries to live by his father's mantra.

A middle child, she was taken care of by an older brother because of their mother's death. After a demon killed the rest of her family and Urokodaki saved her, Makomo came to greatly admire Urokodaki's comforting nature. She tries to mimic that in all that she does.

He had a childhood friend he promised to marry, but when a demon killed his friends and family, a part of him died. A piece of the original Murata and a parasite from the future fused into an unnatural being that the world knows as Murata. Even Muzan would be disturbed by Murata's true nature.

She was a gifted girl in the Iguro family, but when she spoke against Obanai's treatment, they slit her tongue and left her to die. She worked hard at Douma's temple, but fled when she found the chance. To her, living in ignorance is the most terrifying thing. It is through truth that she can live happily.

Each hashira's favorite food and hobbies.

Food: Japanese mixed rice. It was a staple at the temple.
Hobbies: Playing the bamboo flute. His sense of hearing makes him very good at it.

Food: Sweet rice balls. His mother was the greatest at making them, and he won't accept any other answer.
Hobbies: Raising rhinoceros beetles. A surprisingly child-like hobby. He's jealous that Yuichiro is better at raising the stronger beetles.

Food: Sweet potatoes. An ancestor of the Rengoku family started to grow them. They own a garden of sweet potatoes.
Hobbies: Traditional Japanese art and theater (sumo, noh, kabuki). A very cultured hobby that surprises people.

Food: Sakura mochi. She ate so much that her hair turned pink because of it.
Hobbies: Cooking (especially western food) and Menko, a card game. She's never lost a game.

Food: Cold soba. It used to be miso soup until Giyu introduced him to a spot. The owners are still scared and amazed by Sabito's appetite.
Hobbies: Crafting masks. An obvious inspiration from Urokodaki.

Food: Urokodaki's stir fry. It's nostalgic and easy to make. She cried of happiness once she was able to replicate it on her own.
Hobbies: Cooking with Mitsuri, drawing, and stargazing. The beauty of the sky puts her in a drawing mood.

Food: Rice and natto. His village knew exactly how to ferment the soybeans.
Hobbies: Reading. He dislikes writing, however. It gives his hands cramps.
[Seiko]
Food: Tofu. It has a lot of variety and is easy to eat.
Hobbies: Teaching and learning. She loves when new information clicks, and enjoys seeing that expression on others.
Each hashira's quick backstory.
[Gyomei]
A caretaker at a temple, he raised and cared for nine orphans. Gyomei was an orphan himself. He was happiest at that point in life, even when he was hungry and cold. Unfortunately, after being nearly executed, he has come to distrust most children.
[Sanemi]
He's the oldest of seven children. With an abusive father and a caring mother, he swore to take care of his family starting from a young age. Has a quick temper, which only makes him angrier, because it reminds him of his father.
[Kyojuro]
A proud and noble son of the Rengoku bloodline. His greatest inspiration is his mother, and even with his father's drinking problem, he promises to teach Senjuro right and correct his father's behavior.
[Mitsuri]
She had a normal childhood growing up. However, due to her oddities, it has made finding a husband difficult. She's grateful for the support she's received from the corps. It has made her more confident and proud of herself.
[Shinobu]
Shinobu and her sister lived in a well-off family. They were known for being good at treating illnesses. After being saved by Gyomei, she made a promise to her sister. Even now, she works endlessly to quell the growing anger in her heart.
[Obanai]
Being the only son in over three centuries, his torture by the hands of his family has made him distrustful of women. However, he is insecure of himself and has tremendous guilt. He loves Mitsuri, but he is not willing to take the first step until he repays his debt.
[Tengen]
With a paranoid father, he had to endure harsh training. Tengen even killed some of his siblings to survive. But, he lives by moving forward. To be weighed down by his tragedies like a pitiful character, that was something only fools did.
[Sabito]
He was the oldest brother in a family of sisters. His father always taught him to be responsible and reliable, and that a man's greatest strength was his own determination. After being saved by Urokodaki, he still tries to live by his father's mantra.
[Makomo]
A middle child, she was taken care of by an older brother because of their mother's death. After a demon killed the rest of her family and Urokodaki saved her, Makomo came to greatly admire Urokodaki's comforting nature. She tries to mimic that in all that she does.
[Murata]
He had a childhood friend he promised to marry, but when a demon killed his friends and family, a part of him died. A piece of the original Murata and a parasite from the future fused into an unnatural being that the world knows as Murata. Even Muzan would be disturbed by Murata's true nature.
[Seiko]
She was a gifted girl in the Iguro family, but when she spoke against Obanai's treatment, they slit her tongue and left her to die. She worked hard at Douma's temple, but fled when she found the chance. To her, living in ignorance is the most terrifying thing. It is through truth that she can live happily.
A/N: May update as the story gets further. Might consider adding some non-hashira, such as Giyu or Yuichiro, if the itch strikes.

With Murata's help and Giyu's persistent eye, the Kamado brothers were doing slightly better.
But, Murata could not stay as long as he wanted. It would be remiss of him to neglect his other duties. The same was true for Giyu.
The boy would need to grow up on his own and achieve his own feats. However, Murata held a deep interest in the Hinokami Kagura.
Reading about Sun Breathing was one thing, but to witness it in person? It might lead to greater insight in the origin of the breath.
During a cold night, with the ground covered in snow, Murata led Tanjiro outside. They breathed consciously, allowing the freezing chill wash over them.
"Tanjiro, I was told that your family had a tradition during this time of year?"
He lit up as he relived some nostalgic memories. "My father would perform the Hinokami Kagura from sundown to sunrise during the winter. He taught me some of it, but I'll never be as good as him."
"Don't worry about that. If you can, show me what you know," Murata said.
"I'd like to, but I don't have my father's ornament," Tanjiro said, describing the wooden stick his father crafted and used.
Murata, undeterred, urged Tanjiro. "Use your training sword instead. Think of it as an extension of yourself."
Tanjiro looked unsure, but had no good reason to refuse Murata's request. They both cleared the snow off a small area. Murata brought out a few torches and slammed them into the ground, forming a perimeter around Tanjiro.
Tanjiro stood still, breathing deeply. Slowly, he began to move, remembering the movements his father showed him.
Dance
Clear Blue Sky
Murata stopped Tanjiro, causing him to stumble in his step.
"When you practice the dance, how do you breathe?" Murata asked.
Tanjiro thought for a moment, a bit confused by Murata's question. It began to snow, making the air feel colder.
"Breathe? I took in a deep breath like normal, and then I started the dance," he said.
That wasn't quite right, Murata thought. Hinokami Kagura was supposed to be difficult, especially when breathing properly. It was only when one mastered the technique that dancing through the entire night became possible. Even then, the dance continued to be a hellish task.
"From what little I saw, I have only one suggestion," Murata said. "Breathe like the way your father did while dancing."
Tanjiro's eyes shined with recognition.

"Are you watching?" Tanjiro's mother asked. "That's your father's kagura dance. Our family works with fire, so we offer this dance, along with our prayers, on New Year's Day."
"How can dad dance for so long? I think my lungs would freeze," Tanjiro said.
Tanjuro, dressed in his special garb, repeated the movements of the dance. The man looked like a spirit, showing no signs of fatigue despite his sickness. The bells attached to his wooden ornament chimed, and his movements flowed with precision.
The next day, Tanjiro sat with his father while tying rope. He asked the same question from the night before.
Tanjuro smiled, patting his son's head. "I use a special way of breathing. It invigorates you, and if you master it, you can dance forever. Promise me Tanjiro, that you won't forget our dance."
Tanjiro smiled, easily accepting the promise.

"Are you okay?" Murata waved his hand in front of Tanjiro.
He shook out of his stupor, and thanked Murata. "I understand it better now! Thank you!"
Murata accepted his thanks in a daze. He just said what made sense to him. Was it really that insightful?
Tanjiro adjusted his stance, and began the first movement.

Already, his body screamed in pain.

Tanjiro collapsed to the ground, holding a hand to his mouth. Murata rushed to help him up, and sighed in relief once he realized there was no blood.
Murata started speaking his thoughts. "This is a breathing technique. There's no doubt about it, and it's likely the reason behind your discomfort with Water Breathing."
Tanjiro wiped the saliva off his hand and nodded, amazed at Murata's knowledge. Though, how did he know?
"I think I know what to focus on now. But, how did you know the dance required a special breathing technique?"
Murata froze, yet regained his bearing.
"Your sister mentioned before that your father was sick. How else would he be able to complete a dance like that without a technique of sorts?"
It was a reasonable connection, especially if one knew all the relevant information. Though, Murata believed that Tanjuro likely had the demon slayer mark as well.
Tanjiro accepted his answer, stars in his eyes.
"But when I saw you dance even for that short time, it reminded me of something," Murata said.
Pulling out a scroll, he double checked its contents.
"There exists a breath, a technique that is the origin of all other breathing forms. It was called Sun Breathing."
Murata handed the record to Tanjiro, who began to read it with great effort.
"It's a bit early for me to assume anything, but I believe there's a strong connection between your family's dance and Sun Breathing," Murata explained.
Tanjiro muttered to himself, wondering if Muzan attacked his family because of this connection.
He bowed to Murata. "I cannot be grateful enough to you!"
Murata rubbed the back of his head sheepishly. Tanjiro's existence was like the embodiment of wholesomeness.

Preparing for his next journey, Murata left. He waved goodbye to Urokodaki and the Kamado siblings.
Returning to the Ice Estate, he found himself inside his small, makeshift library. A personal request and endeavor of his, he wanted to preserve some of the more interesting records and history of the corps. He personally enlisted Shoto to help oversee the library whenever the man had time.
The Demon Slayer Mark
When the marked one arrives, the mark will appear in others around that person as if in resonance. The marked ones possess a frightening amount of power compared to their non-marked counterparts. However, every marked one died by the age of twenty-five. Only one exception lived past it, and he was born with the mark.
Putting the record back in its place, Murata gripped his head in frustration. The curse was a big problem. Maybe it was selfish of him, because while he would do anything to defeat Muzan and the Upper Moons, he would like to spend more time with the friends he made.
Why the age of twenty-five? Why was death the ultimate price?
Interestingly, the mark reminded Murata of the power that came from human adrenaline. A rare strength that appeared when humans were pushed to the brink, allowing a person to use all the power in their body, even at its own detriment.
Murata had no doubt that every hashira would pay the price happily if it meant getting rid of Muzan. However, he wanted to remain skeptical and hope for a workaround.
The only assumption he had was whether the duration of the mark mattered. For instance, if someone always had the mark 'on,' then it would definitely eat away at their lifespan. On the other hand, if it disappeared and then was used in combat, like Muichiro's case, then one could possibly live longer than their mid-twenties.
Unfortunately, his only source of information was from a fragmented memory where Kokushibo said with certainty that anyone with the mark would die by twenty-five. Later on, Gyomei died, but whether it was purely due to the mark or a combination of his injuries, it was difficult to tell.
Giyu and Sanemi also manifested their marks, originally. At that point, it would mean they'd have four more years to live. Yet, Giyu and Sanemi both had descendants.
Neither of them struck Murata as the type of person to leave a wife and child behind, knowing their inevitable death.
Perhaps if someone like Tamayo could deeply study the phenomenon, then these questions could be answered.

"You looked like you were about to bash your head on the wall," Tengen laughed.
"You didn't come here just to tell me that, did you?"
Tengen stood up, looming over Murata. "Of course not. I am enlisting your help in an investigation in Tokyo. We're heading to the Yoshiwara district!"
Murata nodded, immediately following Tengen outside. It wasn't until he started running that he realized the magnitude of Tengen's words.

The way to Tokyo proved to be a considerable distance, but they ran and ran. Tengen and Murata encountered little resistance, and since Tengen seemed eager to begin, they took few rests in between.
They rested for a day and a night in a home that Tengen bought. It felt cozy, with a couple of rooms to sleep in.
"We're going to Yoshiwara at night, starting tomorrow!" Tengen explained. "We'll start exploring, but my wives will eventually join us. I won't need your disguise this time."
Murata shuddered. "We're the same rank now, so I wouldn't even bother with it."
During the early night , Tengen and Murata stepped out, changing their uniforms to something less suspicious. It hardly mattered, because Tengen's flamboyant features and his tall stature were eye-catching. His accompanying eyepatch made him seem mysterious.
Murata, meanwhile, had a very tolerable and simple look to him. Other than his muscular frame and the scars on his hands, he did not stand out very much.
Really, who was the better ninja in this situation?
However, in the Entertainment District, a potential customer's beauty did not matter to the women of the night. If a person had enough money, they could do as they pleased.
Regardless, it did help to be beautiful and many of the women were waving at Tengen, while very few looked at Murata's way.
"Aren't you afraid of your wives getting jealous?" Murata nudged Tengen as they looked around.
Tengen brushed it off and laughed, causing some of the observers to giggle to themselves. "I belong completely to my wives. There is no question of loyalty."
The Entertainment District was crowded. Filled with people, activity never stopped, and at night, it only became more busy. The blinding lights, the unending conversation, and the general atmosphere of the district made it an uncomfortable place for Murata.
It was too much, and its corrupt underbelly made it distasteful to him. Even at his loneliest, he would not consider going here for companionship.
"The district is controlled by several houses," Tengen explained. "Each one has its own level of influence, but since we're men, we can't infiltrate as easily. Still, our goal is to gather as much information on the houses as we can."
"I assume the houses that we want to further investigate will be done by your wives?" Murata asked.
Tengen patted Murata on the back, causing him to lose his balance. "Exactly! See, this is why I get along with you."

Knowing that more ground could be covered by separating, the two hashira split up.
Murata found himself on a rooftop watching the people. In truth, he also had another goal.
At first, he was concerned that if they found Daki, then they would have to fight Gyutaro. Another concern was actually finding Daki, because he did not remember what house she was in, or what her disguised name was.
Admittedly, he didn't care much for Daki or Gyutaro. This apathy led him to forget many of the details leading up to her discovery. To him, remembering that they were Upper Moon Six and that Gyutaro used poison was enough.
Since he was in Tokyo, this presented a good opportunity to search for Tamayo. Even if it was seemingly impossible, he had to keep trying.
Further splitting his efforts, he spent a couple of hours observing the shuffling of people in and out of the 'Ogimoto' house. Satisfied, he quietly travelled to other parts of Tokyo, using his speed to comb through swathes of distance.
Yushiro had an illusory blood demon art. Murata couldn't pinpoint its exact potency, but he knew having an enhanced sense was important. Since he didn't have anything of the sort, he would rely on hopping from rooftop to rooftop, which provided a bird's eye view of the city.
Even if the blood demon art utilized illusions, maybe Murata could find something inconsistent or strange.
The first few nights were unsuccessful. Tengen and Murata returned home each night to share their findings.
"Ogimoto and Tokito, huh?" Tengen narrowed his eyes. "If you think they're worthwhile, then I do too. Who should I send?"
Looking at Tengen's notes, Murata furrowed his brows. "Kyogoku, Fujiwara, Kimura, Hashimoto..."
There were even more names but Murata stopped reading them.
"Did you seriously just write down every house you came into contact with?" Murata asked. He couldn't believe it.
Tengen scoffed, acting a bit offended. "Of course I did! When starting out, you have to cast a large net. Though, many of them came to me. You wouldn't believe how persistent some of them were!"
Sadly, Murata could. Tengen was rich, handsome, and he knew how to have a good time.
Murata offered an idea. "I'm not too familiar with most of them. Honestly, just get rid of the ones that aren't too busy. While a small house would make it easier to avoid detection, a demon would want to be in a busier house to eat more humans."
"I see where you're going with that," Tengen agreed. "But I want to be extra sure. I'll have some of the muscle mice look around the less flamboyant areas."
Pulling out a pair of muscle mice, he spoke with them in their secret language before they jumped out the window.
"Couldn't you have them out earlier?" Murata felt tired.
"It would take too long to search without a specific house in mind. They can't move like us, you know?"

With Tengen focusing on a specific house and the muscle mice covering the rest, Murata was able to divert more attention to finding Tamayo.
He still took notes of the Tokito and Ogimoto houses, but without Tengen's charisma, he didn't get as far as he liked.
It actually hurt his feelings in a way. He wasn't the most stunning man, but he wasn't ugly, far from it.
Climbing on a rooftop, he saw a shadow lingering. Squinting his eyes, Murata watched the man jumping from rooftop to rooftop with great speed.
He followed the shadow, keeping a hand on his hidden sheath.

Turning around, Murata deflected a flying sword with his own blade, causing it to land on the man's hand.
The man's white hair was vibrant even in the night, and he licked the blade with anticipation.
"I can feel my son's presence on you. I wonder how he'll feel once I kill a friend of his."
Locking eyes with Tetsuji, Murata's blood turned cold.

Ducking, he moved out the way. A barrage of blood spears impaled the area he dodged.
Ice Breathing, First Form: Glacial Storm
Murata swung his sword around him. Throwing out a smoke bomb, he immediately retreated. If the battle turned serious, then they could easily put hundreds of people at risk.
Running towards Yoshiwara, he sprinted. Tetsuji, temporarily slowed by the smoke, pushed through and quickly began the chase.
More weapons flew towards Murata. Spears, shuriken, daggers, and swords surrounded him, aiming for vital organs.
Ice Breathing, Fifth Form: Freezing Hundredfold Slashes
An exhausting experimental technique, Murata sliced through every weapon as quickly as possible, hoping to lose Tetsuji and find a place to hide and plan.
Upper Moon Four made it difficult, efficiently utilizing his blood to create more weapons. Murata kept reflecting and destroying as much as possible.
Tetsuji took advantage of the distraction. He aimed a kick at Murata's chest. The force propelled Murata hundreds of meters away into a small neighborhood, generating dust and debris.
Tetsuji muttered to himself. "Maybe I kicked him too far..."
He got caught up in the joys of fighting and the thrill of the hunt. Perhaps Akaza was rubbing off on him too much.
Murata crashed into the ground, gasping and coughing up phlegm and blood. If he hadn't blocked with his sword, there would be a hole in his chest.
He got up, trembling, finding a place to hide and mask his presence. Then, a hand grabbed his neck, pulling him through a wall.
Nearly slicing off the hand touching him, Murata stopped mid-swing.
Yushiro stared at him with disgust and barely disguised worry.
"Hurry up! Get in here before that demon notices you're gone," Yushiro hurriedly pushed Murata into a house.
The inside, sprawled out like a hurricane swept through it, proved to be a relief from Murata's 'fight.' He sat on the floor, concentrating on his blood flow and assessing the bruises on his chest.
Yushiro returned with a woman by his side. He bandaged the wounds, ignoring the wince and hiss of pain coming from Murata.
The woman, eyes weathered with age, approached Murata.
"Sato Murata, am I correct?"
He nodded.
"I am Tamayo. Don't worry about the demon, we should be hidden for long enough. As for you, I want to make a proposition."
Regardless of her confidence, Murata groaned. The timing could've been better, in his opinion.
They rested for a day and a night in a home that Tengen bought. It felt cozy, with a couple of rooms to sleep in.
"We're going to Yoshiwara at night, starting tomorrow!" Tengen explained. "We'll start exploring, but my wives will eventually join us. I won't need your disguise this time."
Murata shuddered. "We're the same rank now, so I wouldn't even bother with it."
During the early night , Tengen and Murata stepped out, changing their uniforms to something less suspicious. It hardly mattered, because Tengen's flamboyant features and his tall stature were eye-catching. His accompanying eyepatch made him seem mysterious.
Murata, meanwhile, had a very tolerable and simple look to him. Other than his muscular frame and the scars on his hands, he did not stand out very much.
Really, who was the better ninja in this situation?
However, in the Entertainment District, a potential customer's beauty did not matter to the women of the night. If a person had enough money, they could do as they pleased.
Regardless, it did help to be beautiful and many of the women were waving at Tengen, while very few looked at Murata's way.
"Aren't you afraid of your wives getting jealous?" Murata nudged Tengen as they looked around.
Tengen brushed it off and laughed, causing some of the observers to giggle to themselves. "I belong completely to my wives. There is no question of loyalty."
The Entertainment District was crowded. Filled with people, activity never stopped, and at night, it only became more busy. The blinding lights, the unending conversation, and the general atmosphere of the district made it an uncomfortable place for Murata.
It was too much, and its corrupt underbelly made it distasteful to him. Even at his loneliest, he would not consider going here for companionship.
"The district is controlled by several houses," Tengen explained. "Each one has its own level of influence, but since we're men, we can't infiltrate as easily. Still, our goal is to gather as much information on the houses as we can."
"I assume the houses that we want to further investigate will be done by your wives?" Murata asked.
Tengen patted Murata on the back, causing him to lose his balance. "Exactly! See, this is why I get along with you."

Knowing that more ground could be covered by separating, the two hashira split up.
Murata found himself on a rooftop watching the people. In truth, he also had another goal.
At first, he was concerned that if they found Daki, then they would have to fight Gyutaro. Another concern was actually finding Daki, because he did not remember what house she was in, or what her disguised name was.
Admittedly, he didn't care much for Daki or Gyutaro. This apathy led him to forget many of the details leading up to her discovery. To him, remembering that they were Upper Moon Six and that Gyutaro used poison was enough.
Since he was in Tokyo, this presented a good opportunity to search for Tamayo. Even if it was seemingly impossible, he had to keep trying.
Further splitting his efforts, he spent a couple of hours observing the shuffling of people in and out of the 'Ogimoto' house. Satisfied, he quietly travelled to other parts of Tokyo, using his speed to comb through swathes of distance.
Yushiro had an illusory blood demon art. Murata couldn't pinpoint its exact potency, but he knew having an enhanced sense was important. Since he didn't have anything of the sort, he would rely on hopping from rooftop to rooftop, which provided a bird's eye view of the city.
Even if the blood demon art utilized illusions, maybe Murata could find something inconsistent or strange.
The first few nights were unsuccessful. Tengen and Murata returned home each night to share their findings.
"Ogimoto and Tokito, huh?" Tengen narrowed his eyes. "If you think they're worthwhile, then I do too. Who should I send?"
Looking at Tengen's notes, Murata furrowed his brows. "Kyogoku, Fujiwara, Kimura, Hashimoto..."
There were even more names but Murata stopped reading them.
"Did you seriously just write down every house you came into contact with?" Murata asked. He couldn't believe it.
Tengen scoffed, acting a bit offended. "Of course I did! When starting out, you have to cast a large net. Though, many of them came to me. You wouldn't believe how persistent some of them were!"
Sadly, Murata could. Tengen was rich, handsome, and he knew how to have a good time.
Murata offered an idea. "I'm not too familiar with most of them. Honestly, just get rid of the ones that aren't too busy. While a small house would make it easier to avoid detection, a demon would want to be in a busier house to eat more humans."
"I see where you're going with that," Tengen agreed. "But I want to be extra sure. I'll have some of the muscle mice look around the less flamboyant areas."
Pulling out a pair of muscle mice, he spoke with them in their secret language before they jumped out the window.
"Couldn't you have them out earlier?" Murata felt tired.
"It would take too long to search without a specific house in mind. They can't move like us, you know?"

With Tengen focusing on a specific house and the muscle mice covering the rest, Murata was able to divert more attention to finding Tamayo.
He still took notes of the Tokito and Ogimoto houses, but without Tengen's charisma, he didn't get as far as he liked.
It actually hurt his feelings in a way. He wasn't the most stunning man, but he wasn't ugly, far from it.
Climbing on a rooftop, he saw a shadow lingering. Squinting his eyes, Murata watched the man jumping from rooftop to rooftop with great speed.
He followed the shadow, keeping a hand on his hidden sheath.

Since the wives are working undercover at a Oiran House, wouldn't they be forced to preform some of the "duties" expected of them? Like, sure some high ranking Oirans usually spent years with their virginities intact, but those were usually raised and taught by those houses for years. The three on the other hand are just some random woman who had to sell themselves for the money, and wouldn't be expected to be kept "preserved".

I'm pretty sure that you can't have a story on both SFW CW and NSFW CW, so doing that might lose existing readership and cause the story to stall out, especially if the thread has to start from scratch.

They sat on the floor, Yushiro maintaining a cordial distance away from Murata, but staying close to Tamayo.
Murata held himself in a relaxed position, allowing his breathing to steady his blood flow and allowing the sheathed sword rest on his lap.
"When we first saw you nearly a year ago, we had to move more often. Yushiro was none too pleased about it," Tamayo said, hiding a small grin.
Murata smiled. Being an inconvenience to Yushiro brought him a small sense of satisfaction.
"I'm glad to hear it, but what's stopping me from slicing you two right now?" He frowned, tapping on the handle.
He had no intention of doing anything of the sort. Yet, he couldn't understand why they wanted to meet him at all. He was a hashira, a person who would kill any demon they encountered.
Yushiro glared and instinctively moved closer to Tamayo. Her eyes dimmed and she stared at Murata.
"Do not bluff with me. We both understand each other's worth, and we share the same goal."
The unspoken goal of defeating Muzan.
Sighing, Murata changed his tone. "Before I tell you anything, what do you want me to do?"
Tamayo stood up, walking towards her desk full of papers and vials. She pulled out several empty needles as a calico cat jumped from the nearby drawer.
Petting the cat, Tamayo explained her request. "This is Chachamaru. She's been a useful companion as of late."
Murata took the needles, putting them away as Tamayo spoke again. "I need blood. Not for me or Yushiro, but for research. Specifically, I need the blood of the demon moons. Do you think you can do that for me?"
"Easily. I admittedly have great luck when it comes to finding the stronger demons," Murata whined.
Tamayo released a breath of relief. "Chachamaru will take the blood samples."
A strong tremor rumbled through the neighborhood like an earthquake. The house shook, causing several of the frames on the wall to fall.
"It looks like we have less time than I would have liked," Tamayo said.
Yushiro looked ready to push Murata out, but he stood his ground.
"If you meet two boys and their sister, help them out. Despite being a demon for a year, the girl hasn't eaten any humans, relying on sleep to gain her energy."
Tamayo's eyes widened as she absorbed Murata's words. The neighborhood shook again as the buildings creaked in pain.
"I hope to meet again in better circumstances!" Murata sprinted out. Tamayo made to stop him, but he ran through Yushiro's illusion, finding himself back in the neighborhood.
Looking around, he noticed being in the same alley as before. Judging from the horizon, the sun would rise soon.
Climbing with soft steps, he reached a rooftop, his eyes surveying the destruction.
A flashing figure launched itself towards him. Unsheathing his blade, Murata parried the attack.
Tetsuji stood in front of him. With red eyes glaring at him and the peering sun, he growled.
"Lucky boy. We'll meet again. Try to stay alive."
His arms exploded in a shower of blood. He ran away from the rising sun while the spilt blood transformed into a storm of weapons.
He dodged the sword. Blocked the scythe. Sliced the dagger and staff. Jumped over the spear. Side-stepped the axe. Cut the lance in half. Dodged another sword.
Tetsuji laid low, faking his escape to get closer to Murata. The moment he moved to punch through Murata's torso, a pair of blades cut off his arms.
Tengen leapt into battle, locking eyes with his father. Livid due to the ruined opportunity, Tetsuji jumped backwards, running away.
They heard a name being called, and a sliding door appeared underneath Tetsuji. He disappeared as the sunlight washed over the area.
As the weapons burned underneath the sun, Murata kneeled, collecting the very few remaining droplets of blood.
"Good timing. Any later, and I would be dead," he said, catching his breath and pocketing the needle.
Tengen didn't respond and pensively stared at the ground where his father was last seen. Reaching it, he bowed and prayed.
Murata furrowed his brows. Tengen rarely offered any sort of prayer or promise. He lived as he pleased, foregoing the burdens of his past and moving forward one day at a time.
Standing up, Tengen walked back to Murata.
"I wanted to hold out for the slightest chance of being wrong, but seeing him for myself, there is no denying the fact that my father is a demon," Tengen said.
He thought to himself, his face scrunching up in improvised plans before he decided on a course of action. "I'm going to search for him. I'll deal with the Entertainment District later, but could you do me the favor of relaying this to the master?"
Pulling out a scroll, he began writing rapidly.
"Why not send the message with your crow?" Murata asked.
"About that, I'm going to have him work overtime. Sorry buddy," Tengen said. His crow started pecking him, demanding for more compensation and shiny ornaments in its squeaky voice.
Tengen looked back at Murata. "Besides, you're a trusted friend. Knowing the master, having it delivered by you will soften his heart."
Murata frowned. A one-man mission to find Upper Moon Four was a guaranteed suicide. "Don't tell me you're going by yourself. At least another hashira, and even then, I wouldn't be comfortable with just that."
Tengen did consider it. His mind racked for possible candidates.
Kyojuro, Gyomei, Makomo, Sabito, Sanemi...
No, no, hell no, maybe, possibly.
"I would want to enlist you, but you're always tangled in weird stuff."
Murata was aware of Tengen's habit of eavesdropping. Though, if Tengen actually knew about Nezuko, he would be just as offended at the fact that his friend was able to hide such an important development at all.
"Damn, so it really comes down to Sanemi," Tengen sighed.
"Not Sabito or Kyojuro? Or even Seiko?" Murata asked.
"I sparred with him the most besides you and Makomo, so we're familiar with each other's techniques," Tengen said. "And I want to find my father as soon as possible."
"Why not Makomo then?" Murata asked
Tengen shuddered. "I will not elaborate, but absolutely not."
He took large leaps, moving from rooftop to rooftop before Murata had a chance to respond,

"Luckily, no," Kagaya answered. "This will be the first of many fits, but I see at least a year and a half left within me. But regarding the letter; has Tengen already taken the initiative?"
"Yes, but I believe Sanemi will be there with him."
The master exhaled in relief. "That's good. I know he acts without guilt, but seeing his father must've stirred old feelings. I do not blame him."
Murata cut to the main reason for his presence. "Should we work with Tamayo? For instance, have the Butterfly Estate begin research alongside her?"
Kagaya held up a hand, rejecting the proposal. "I believe it is too early. Instead, I think I want to have Tanjiro meet her after he becomes a demon slayer. While I do not doubt Kanae's adaptability, it will be the others that will not easily abide."
"You're saying it's too early."
It bothered Murata. He would not hesitate to lay his life down for Kagaya's sake, but his decisions were difficult to understand, especially in the present.
Kagaya smiled. "I believe Nezuko will be the great change. The groundwork has been laid out, especially thanks to you, Murata, but some things are set in stone. Do you understand what I mean?"
He did, and it was exactly what bothered him. "I do."
"Continue working with Tamayo. When the time comes, know that I stand with you."
Murata nodded, taking his leave.

Kagaya held up a hand, rejecting the proposal. "I believe it is too early. Instead, I think I want to have Tanjiro meet her after he becomes a demon slayer. While I do not doubt Kanae's adaptability, it will be the others that will not easily abide."

It bothered Murata. He would not hesitate to lay his life down for Kagaya's sake, but his decisions were difficult to understand, especially in the present.
Kagaya smiled. "I believe Nezuko will be the great change. The groundwork has been laid out, especially thanks to you, Murata, but some things are set in stone. Do you understand what I mean?"
He did, and it was exactly what bothered him. "I do."
"Continue working with Tamayo. When the time comes, know that I stand with you."
Murata nodded, taking his leave.
