What are your most hated fanfic tropes

Self-inserts that doggedly follow canon. What is the point of a SI fic where the mc refuses to change anything?

Self-insert stories that are exactly the same as other self insert stories. "Oh, I'm in DxD? I gotta save Rias from Riser, save Asia, save Kuroka, let Akeno know how much I accept her, fight Raynare and the Fallen, fight Kokabiel, etc."

Bashing fics. Particularly when the character getting bashed is innocent, or the one doing the bashing is even worse. Ron Weasley constantly gets bashed to make Harry look good even when it makes no sense.

Self inserts where the SI refuses to pursue a girl because she ends up with someone else in canon. It's even worse when he constantly hits on her, then turns her down when she tells him she likes him.

Linking to music in the middle of a chapter. I didn't read your stupid Simple Plan lyrics when you did it 20 years ago, and I'm not watching your stupid videos now.

Making the mc a generic harem anime protagonist. Dense, allergic to women, says "we can't" when a girl makes a move on him.

Passive mc. "Sure you disrespected me in front of the entire world, everyone is mocking me behind my back, and stole my money and property, but it's cool. I don't really care."

Preachy moralizing mc. Constantly whining about how bad slavery is in a waifu catalog story doesn't suddenly make me rethink the genre, it just makes me wonder why the fuck you are writing a WC fic if you hate it so much.
To be fair for the first one if you change too much too fast then you lose your advantage the best thing to do is make small changes but wait until an important moment to completely derail the plot. But yes if they don't do that it's pointless.

As for not going for the girl who ends up with the hero that's just because the self insert doesn't like ntr lol. Or maybe they believe in true love and fated romance. Though if they are going to go that route it would be interesting to see them notice that one of the girls fell in love with them and try to fix this issue and ship them with the hero.

The only issue with that is...are they considering if the hero/mc even sees them that way in that version of that world? Let's assume he doesn't thanks to SI's presence (not even active interference). Would it be right for him to try to force the hero to see those characters as romantic interests? Assume worse. The hero notices and gets annoyed at it.

It wouldn't be right.

How can that be NTR is the MC is not interested or see the LI as a friend thanks to your interference which made him truly put her inside the 'friendzone'?

The point is, if SI didn't want any of that happen, then he should have not got too close of the cast, or have kept clear he is not interested in any romance, or purposely acting so the characters won't see him as a possible LI.

The ntr thing was a joke. But you have to agree that a conflict where the MC is annoyed at the SI for that would be interesting. I can see it now

slap Naruto
"Shut the fuck up Naruto you will give up on Sakura and marry Hinata you will breed your future wife twice and have two kids, you will also become Hokage. I know how the future works that's why I was able to to manipulate events to save Haiu, the third hokage, Sarutobi, Neji, and Jira. You will take a Hygua wife and you will enjoy the real Hygua bloodline."

Naruto: GET OUT! FUCKING WEIRDO!

An SI MC fic in which they are a damn shipper.
Reason to jump?
Slavery? Nah.
Power? Nope.
Genocide? Meh.

Make their ships be real. MY LIFE'S PURPOSE

*Multiverse feels creeped out.*

For the third: My dude...if MC and your waifu didn't got into a relationship and show NO INTENTION on going into one...YOU ARE NOT HARMING ANYONE on tying the damn knot. This last one is particularly one which I grinded to dust in an Round Robin. S.I was all 'buh girl ends up with MC, cannot do that' while said MC and ALL THE CAST had SET BETTING POOLS on when they would tie the knot and WHO WOULD BE THE FIRST to move to tie it. THE DAMN MC, THE DENSEST MOTHERFUCKER OF ALL noticed it...
Can I get a link to that?

This could be a good cringe comedy. I need to remember to try this if I ever get around to finishing Naruto, if you don't mind me doing so.
On topic, I also don't like harems unless it's just pure smut. For actual romance, monogamy or bust.

And following the self fellating hypocrisy theme, and I suspect some might strongly disagree here with me, the "University instead of highschool" thing.
For every rule there is an exception, sure, I haven't seen it though, all the ones I saw were more or less the same but in University which brings us to why I hate it, it's once again just a morality wank, if you sit at home and fap to fucking character X who is 16 that's bad! But if you badly cover the 16 and slap over it 18 (the loli dragon is 300 years old okay??!!!) then it's all fine now, this arbitrary number suddenly makes you totally fine and you are no longer a "filthy pedo".
Either get over yourself and accept your waifu/waifus are below 18 and you reincarnated your character and now he isn't 18 either or just write about adult characters and not this half assed hollow "fix".

A similar theme is the self inserts that reincarnate/transmigrate into a younger than 18 body and constantly get women shoved in their face and start ranting how "no way I wouldn't even be able to get hard at anyone below 18!", dude, you don't want romance in the story? That's fine.
You want to fit the 18 thing? Sure, again just use above 18 characters in the story.
But this weird projecting of the author's "moral standards" for all to see and admire is just weird, either get off your high horse and just let the below 18 characters have relationships or don't do romance or just use above 18 characters anything is fine as long as it isn't another morality wank.

Christ on a pogo stick I can't stand this in stories. Morality aside, it's such a garbage handwave that does nothing good for the story itself. It also rarely if ever manages to actually account properly for the (sometimes huge) shift in time that the fic takes place in. HP fics in particular are awful about this, although I'm not sure how much of that is due to how many there of them in the first place, rather than something specific to the IP.

All it does is show A. The author probably isn't capable of writing good 18+ content for the IP, and B. Is completely and utterly blind to the gaping hole in SoD that comes up when you age a character five years without explanation. That doesn't even get into the fact that for many IPs aging the world up by X would absolutely create plot holes or otherwise derail canon long before the fic even starts.

It's not NTR if the girl chooses you over her canon love interest. If you like her back, then make a move. Doing nothing because she is supposed to end up with someone else later in the canon timeline is stupid. Why even make it a plot point then?

The story that made me post that trope was one I read a long time ago where the SI liked Hermione, she liked him, he constantly flirted with her, she reciprocated, then he kept going on about how he would never try and start a relationship with her because she is supposed to end up with Ron years down the line.

I dropped the story when it looked like he was going to settle for Daphne while still being in love with Hermione.

Pfffrrr…
she's a real person in this context, you ridiculous author! Being with Ron doesn't mean she'd be happy with Ron!

Paranoia, including against indirect forces like Fate, is a flaw. Even if that inner conflict is not the primary focus of the story, it should still be confronted. There's a difference between restraint (which prevents you from writing the trashy kind of wish fulfillment) and spineless whining. Angst.

I think that harems can be wholesome and they can be used to spice up degenerate behavior. Not merely lewd behavior, but debauchery, moderate-scale defying of rules and social expectations. Motivation is fickle, having a cheerleader supporting your protagonist or having your protagonist guide another into doing salacious things… Nice. Harems can have romance and saucy scenes without being low-quality. They can be intense without being solely sexual.

Ninety-nine out of a hundred harem works ignore that potential though. They erode the potential and accuracy of a franchise's female characters for a wet fart of a payoff. So yeah, I get you, even if your reservations are different.

Precisely my point, it's a morality wank for whose consequences no ever accounts for, I wrote it in my previous comment too, that's exactly WHY it is a morality wank and not an actual AU, those are sometimes pretty well thought out, which is totally different from when the age number is arbitrarily raised just to satisfy moral standards, a lot of fandoms suffer from it though the main offenders are HP and BNHA and it was always hilarious to watch when the 17 Harry or Ron or whoever else behave and make the same choices as their 11-14 counter parts or the cast of BNHA behaving the same at 18 as they do in 15 with close to no changes, Bakuguko for example being a maladjusted asshole at 15 is much more forgivable and understandable than the some but at 18, same for everyone blushing and giggling about relationships at 15 unlike at 18, almost always you clearly see that these characters were just taken out of the time stream at X age and returned when they are age appropriate with no thought as to what may change in-between.

Fair points. Despite my dismissive tone in my other post, I don't think it's impossible to make a good romantic harem story. It's just so damn rare and most of what I've read were so bad I often don't even bother clicking them anymore. Really, I think the size of the harem tends to reflect the quality of the work. Like, 3, maybe, and that's a BIG maybe, 4 is the perfect size, not too bloated, not too small. Any more than that would be way too hard to juggle for most people.

Ehhh, even 4 are unmanageable, I vaguely remember seeing works where three women were still managed without it becoming either unbelievable or them becoming cardboard cutouts or the plot just crashing into a fucking wall, the only number of women in a "harem" that I actually saw that worked consistently is 2 and no more, after that just the amount of text and thought it requires becomes unmanageable.
I don't remember even one work where 4 women were in a relationship with the mc that was actually decent throughout the text and didn't get the aforementioned afflictions.

Of course, we have to account for the "purpose" of the fic since NightmareWard mentioned more or less pure porn fics as I understand of his "fuel degenerate behavior" comment which differs greatly from plot driven fics or origs so that too is a factor of the discussion, when I say "harem by definition is garbage" I mean for a plot driven work, obviously not one that relies more heavily on porn.

Probably S.I: WHAT YOU MEAN THOSE CHARACTERS FROM MY FAV BOOK/ANIME/CARTOON/DOUJIN/LIGHT NOVEL ARE NOW LIVING BREATHING SAPIENT/SENTIENT HUMAN BEINGS WHO CAN ACT DIFFERENTLY IN REGARDS TO MY ACTIONS OVER THE PLOT AND NOT BE AUTOMATAS FOLLOWING THE PLOT MINDLESSLY!?

DON'T BE PREPOSTEROUS! THEY ARE CHARACTERS! NOT PEOPLE! SO I AM THE BIG BALLS SENTIENT CREATURE WHO SEES THE WORLD FROM ABOVE BECAUSE I KNOW THE PLOT! SO THE SHIIIIIIP MUST HAAAAAPPEN FOR MY BIG BALLS!

I hate University thing as well, but for a completely different reason. I don't care if someone wants to play morality police, it's their fic. What I care is how does this change fit into the universe as a whole. OK, you made Hogwarts a university — what happened in the intervening 6 years then? Did Harry run away from home? Did he leave his cupboard under the stairs? How did the maturity affect his introduction to magic? What about 6 years worth of accidental magic, did he not get suspicious at all?

If the author can fit the change into the universe and modify the canon as required, its fine. Issue is, doing that requires pretty much the creation of an original world with elements from the source. Vast majority of authors either can't do it or won't do it, so it's not worth it to check those fics.

I've mentioned it before in a different thread, but this is why age-ups are a complete dealbreaker for me. It's one thing when it's a proper AU, but most of the time you see it in significantly smuttier fics that don't have the desire to properly account for irrevocably changing the timeline to suit their own moral compass. If you don't want to write teenagers having sex that's fine, but you either need to write the horny bits later in the timeline, or do your due diligence with a proper AU or divergent timeline. I see otherwise good and great writers do this and it completely baffles me.

A lot of it is probably just a band aid slapped on to deal with sites that are really strict on anything that's underaged by California standards (yeah I said it, age of consent under the UCMJ is 16, and also the DC area). It's not worth the damn effort to dignify these overly stringent rules with complex backstories to work them in.

Gamer Fics, Harems, Boring putting references to other media without any purpose. Bashing of Any kind. Slash Fics.

For fandom specific. Dark Lord Harry Potters, The Grey Side of Magic, the Naruto Fanfic side in general.

Well at least Naruto has another guy to beat up for being a fatalist like Neji used to be.
The only thing that moves a S.I more than girls and harem is ensuring he can look down and think he is the BIG BALLS of the whole shit.
You would even reject girls if that means you get to GLOAT at your BIG BRAINED shit.

I hate:

Any story that follows cannon to a T.

When the SI abuses canon, and things don't butterfly/players don't react to the SI.

Wave arc in Naruto. The Chunin exams taking 50k+, in which almost literally nothing different happens.

Shopping/Sorting in HP. Obsession with Dumbledore's socks/candy. The wandmaker being creepy. The entire female cast of HP has been written into porn to death, for the love of God, do a crossover for some different women!

Kisuke Urahara being best friends with the SI every time. It's as if people forget what kind of man this guy is. That goofy fan of his is all a persona. Kisuke is one cold mf'er and has the capability to be another Aizen.

MC's that somehow know that their new skill can totally kill that S-rank enemy, despite having never tested it in battle.

MC's that remember where every last follocle of loot is when they regress to the past. Or when they 'know' how someone is going to act/react. Like, really if you share some powerful person's dark secrets, there's some good odds your ass is getting murdered or tortured.

Any person meets the MC in a bar or Inn, they are after the MC's money, or are flirting with some hot woman, to which the MC becomes a White Knight or goes "damn, guess you didn't need my help" and they team up anyway, because the bar/inn explodes or some portal sucks everyone in.

Physical fighters absolutely demolishing mages or vice versa. In fantasy, mages murder knights. But in xianxia, elemental cultivators get bodied by physical cultivators. Where's the balance?

Cute pets. Has no one played OOT? Navi has scarred me for life. Watch Berserk, you get Puck. Fairy companions suck.

Slash or harem out of nowhere.

Scenes where everyone is impressed by a side character's dick size (figuratively) and then the MC walks up and casually unfolds a 13in python all "low key" and no one believes it's real. Like "what, how is it possible? How could you refine this: weapon/medicine or learn that martial art technique/spell/reach enlightenment? I've been doing this for 10 years, how long did it take you?!...A week?! (MC lied to be quote unquote humble, it really took the MC an hour or less) Then a shit ton of extra tests are done on the MC proving how special he is, and the MC just shrugs and is like "yeah, so no big deal, imma head out" then some ppl want to kill/steal from him, and then an authority figure swoops in to save their ass. Jesus I hate that trope so godamn much!

As always, I have more, but I'll leave it at that for now.

I hate:

Any story that follows cannon to a T.
Actually. I think there is one fandom which I think that avoids being hated for having fics that follow all of canon.

People who play Fire Emblem tend to make novelizations of their playthroughs in the games. So while their are minor details that differ. Otherwise it works.

i have a couple that are pretty niche but everytime i see them i immediatly give the story a couple minus points for it. most not enough to abort the second they crop up but if they are too blatant then its a deal breaker. not only tropes but "situations" and archetypes of any kind that are so common i see them everywhere.

- my most hated trope is when the MC doesnt actually have a Goal. you see this for example in 99% of every DxD Story and most System ones too. getting Girls and Power is NOT a Goal, it should be a byproduct, at best.

- i really hate it when people "smirk". why is it always smirking? why not write a normal smile. its everyhwere and everytime i read it i picture some guy that has this distorted meme grin. immediate minus points if it crops up too often.

-there are some "in setting" things that i tolerate in some but hate in others. in Danmachi for example i absolutely CANT STAND having an Inventory. there is already a perfect solution in the setting itself: a Supporter. someone who actually has relevance and has a believable excuse to always hang around our MC. someone who he/she can converse with and banter to write out his personality. its all around way better than just a stupid Inventory, so ignoring that and giving the MC an Inventory just weakens your Story for no reason. and i see it all the time. plus nobody can steal from your Inventory and thats an additional plotpoint just thrown away for nothing. Inventories are seldom a good solution regardless of story.

- if Girls get spared in fights. its 2023 guys you can have a female thug that gets their teeth kicked out too

- if the MC is getting a hidden Identity or hiding powerlevels. its always bad because its just a poor excuse for consequence free actions that doesnt blow back to our MC. BORING. i close one eye if its setting appropriate like in worm but i still like it more if he stays undisguised.

- no satisfying Action/consequence dynamics.

- there is this bad humor/Joke where people (or mostly some girls) that are trying to convince our MC of something and he has this " ahh i cant do anything about it i guess you have me by the balls moments" when he really does have a choice and its just blatant shoe-horning him into a decision that isnt in- character for him.

- why does every MC always tries to justify himself to others in some way? why does he have to explain where his power comes from? tries to think in advance for some justification to bring up if someone asks. maybe even lying to some like its no big deal? who would even ask him and why would you answer them if they do? if they want to break into argument over it and declare you their enemy, thats not the MCs fault? people wouldnt recognize what pride is if it smacks them in the face apparently or they wouldnt lie about every little thing like its no big deal. Conflict is fun, why write it out of your story if its such a low hanging fruit.

i admit most of the bad things i dislike so much are just a symptom. there are a lot of weak willed people who write weak willed Characters. because they dont know anything else? you cant describe the Sky if you lived in a cave your whole life i guess.

Agree with everything but this , you are basically my antithesis on this, I have a pet peeve about writers writing a story with an mc who has no global goals and it is interesting and going well and then either the author himself gets a sudden realization that he urgently needs to create one or people bitch in reviews or comments to similar result and ruin the story.

Don't get me wrong, a goal is often important, but not always there has to be a GOAL in the story, often enough if you are a good enough author the life of the mc itself, his more grounded goals, conflicts and emotions can be just as if not more interesting and barely anyone (anyone good anyways) does that, there once upon a time a whole popular genre "sword and sorcery" that was all about the smaller people and goals...

Perfect families:

In the vast majority of stories the parents and brothers are completely flat, just tools to help the mc in any way possible and never questioning the oddities of a child acting the same as a grown man even in scenarios like Worm where body snatchers are a reality.
Maybe it's just me getting used to reading Xianxia for years or maybe I've never met a bunch of perfect people in my life, but it breaks my suspension of disbelief, and since many fics start from the first years of the insert where all his friends are "good guys" and all enemies are "bad guys" I get to a point where all the fics in X scenario taste the same to me.

The shopping list with the wiki:

How many episodes does Naruto, and Shippuden, and Boruto, and Movies, and Specials have?
How many years has this been on the air, and too many inserts act as if they have the wiki on hand at any time or remember every little detail with eidetic memory that doesn't alter after years of growing back.
The most frustrating part is that there are always perfect plans to get all the shiny ones.

Retcon:

This bothers me more than anything about the Worm fandom; "Ehhh, actually Wildbow said that x is a lie, does it actually work like this...", it also happens with other fandoms but it is in Worm where I experienced the most unpleasant.
I, personally, cannot consider something that is completely outside of the story as canon, even if the author himself said it. I've seen characters who are a complete disgusting human being throughout the entire story, but no, it's the reader's fault because the author had explained the context, somewhere unmarked.

The protagonist always in control:

I could include the perfect allies, but I am referring to a protagonist who always has perfect control of his emotions, unless something very important to the plot happens, the mc never gets angry, never does anything perverted, never gets sad, never laughs, he never gets carried away by anything other than the plot.
This is especially hard when the enemy is a popular named character.

I was bored, thanks for swallowing my complaints.

1. Dense Protagonists.
Not picking upnon something once or twice, if its subtle okay... but common... a lot of these protagonists would need to be absolutely delusional beyond reason to miss the multitude of in your face signs we tend to be shown...

2. Abused Protagonists
its really annoying especially with naruto and hp fics with how long and over the top extreme some authors go on and on about detailing how a kid gets abused, way way way beyond even the indicated canon levels and then claims its for character development or worse, implied canon. I also believes it sends the wrong message to have have such a vast portion of protagonists out there start off as abused like its a requirement to become great...

3. Authors not fact checking
I dont mind a mistake, but I do get annoyed when protagonists continuously make statements like they are facts and a simple online search proves its untrue within the first 3 results. Or when the author writes a fiction that in the first 2 chapters shows theyre winging it and never even seen the show, dont know the canon setting and essentially write a story of their own making using names and locations from a setting but pretty much butchering the rest. To me thats poor writing, especially these days where we have search engines so accurate you rarely need to scroll down anymore, and youtube channels making a video about pretty much every detail in extensive theorycraft as well as quick summaries for the less hardcore fans.

4. Pre-teens more powerful than the top powerhouses in a fandom
I get the want to want to be special. But there is something seriously wrong when a 5 year old is the level of a Kage or shows more power with the force than Darth Vader. Its funny if its a crack fic but more often than not such authors are completely serious.

- if Girls get spared in fights. its 2023 guys you can have a female thug that gets their teeth kicked out t
Which is why I write about men and women equally getting ravaged in every story I write.

why does every MC always tries to justify himself in some way?
Irl every single war has a justification, no matter how flimsy. Most ppl justify their own actions to themselves if they're knowingly committing an "immoral" action. Stealing so you "don't starve." despite refusing to work. Taking money from the rich "because they have enough." Even mundane things like not taking out the trash at a certain time, or not studying for the test have justifications. Happens all the time.

I will agree with you, it becomes annoying when a story harps on those justifications, and makes it into some sort of torture porn.

perfect control of his emotions, unless something very important to the plot happens, the mc never gets angry, never does anything perverted, never gets sad, never laughs, he never gets carried away by anything other than the plot.
What you're describing is every Korean protagonist.

I grew up in a "perfect" family of incredibly serious individuals. I didn't find comedy in things or smile until I was like 19. My cheek muscles were so atrophied, it hurt to "smile" if you could call it that, for more than 10 seconds.

I like to poke fun at myself when I retcon. Or I'll roll with it. Like if you read my Fugaku story, you'll see I misspelled Kuma and Kumo. Making it a feature in my story where everyone thinks the Fugaku SI is worried about some Village Hidden in the Bears that doesn't (or does it?) Exist.

I was very very very dense as a child/teen, and apparently had quite a few girls interested in me. I actually got girls confess to me after dialogue, instead of the other way around. In my later years, I very deliberately chose to ignore their advances. After my experiences irl, I don't blame stupid teenagers for being dense.

I hate it when author change a piece in story and immediately double back to fix it is really annoying. Like in one fanfic where the SI saved Asia and then had existential crisis because she would never meet Issei, so instead of having meet Issei at the right place he thinks giving her back to fallens after he save her from them is a good idea. Like why would that be a smart decision at all, most of all why even have that plot if your going to undo it in the second chapter like the author had no idea how to have butterfly effects and say stations of canon must stick.
