With This Ring (Young Justice SI) (Thread Fourteen)

The disjointed, constantly switching narratives have made the last couple of chapters significantly less enjoyable.

i'm going to have to agree unfortunately. there are also a few other things going on that i might as well vent about while we're at it.

i used to really enjoy the Renegade chapters, even once he dove in to the MLP universe. i generally don't enjoy/read forays into universes i know nothing about (Warhammer, Fallout, a few others we haven't seen in a while)... but i stuck with Renegade, despite knowing nothing about MLP lore, because i liked the preexisting world that had been built around him when he started going through the Mirror. now he never leaves Ponyworld, and while i do continue to read Renegade entries, i'm about as disinterested as i could be while still actually reading it. i hate to give up on it and miss out on something enjoyable, which is still possible given the world that was built before it became ponies everywhere. i would happily surrender Ponyworld to Darkseid if it meant getting some updates on all of the enlightened people Renegade created, or the Red ring user that, last i remember, was rebuilding England, or any of the stuff going on in the Vega system. Gravy has had so much happen, i would love to see some kind of interaction with Hinon where they explore the metaphysics of it all.

but really, the thing that made me latch on to this fic years ago and stick with it as my one and only daily read is the original OL universe. so much has happened. i'm invested in all of it, and i crave, crave the chapters that focus on OL's universe, even when he's not the main character of the chapter. there are still so many things to explore, but things have gotten diluted with all of the other universes. admittedly i'm biased against them since i only read a fraction of them, but the hopping around makes me crave more OL, and nowadays its like i'm in a state of constant withdrawal.

one thing i've learned is that Zoat knows what he's doing, and i tend to trust that. however, i'm to the point now where, when i sit down with my coffee in the morning to read the daily edition before going to work, i first look for orange quotation marks, and if i don't see them, decide whether i'm going to bother reading.

all just one man's opinion, obviously. my QQ bookmark isn't going anywhere anytime soon. but i'm tired, boss.

*and for the record i do feel like shit for complaining about the free fanfiction that i've been reliably enjoying for the better part of a decade. part of me insists that i have no right to complain, while the other part wants to respectfully issue constructive criticism.

Personally I like all of it. No qualifier.

Yeah. It all has the same general writing still, if with variable personalities honestly. Maybe it's less awkward for me, because it's actually uncommon to see a universe I've NO grounding in at all, and if I really want context a brief wiki walk isn't hard?

Or is it a difference in expectation where I expected that to be the reading experience for a DC megafic much less a mass crossover DC megafic and others just.... didn't?

Yeah, I'm... I'm going to be toning that down.
Whatever you think is best. I enjoy Renegade!Paul, but it has become a large story with a lot of spinning plates. Good luck with whatever dynamic keeps you sane and proud, as you've earned the right to be.

I wound up trying the first episode of MLPFIM recently. Mostly because I tried one of those Conversion Bureau fanfics, which… it has some of the hallmarks of a new writer, but you can tell the author really gave a damn, put a lot of thought into it. As for the source material? It's alright. Reminds me of Adventure Time.

Adventure Time is a lot darker. I remember the episode where Bubblegum decided to annihilate the Flame Kingdom, killed dozens of its citizens and destroyed most of its relics, before calling Ice King off at the last minute. And there's nothing stopping her changing her mind again. Pony has nothing like that.

...

Ah, aside from that time that Twilight super-murdered the entire universe seven or eight times.
*facepalms* It's OMAC isn't it?
Oh, like you'd remember what the first OMAC looked like without a wiki.

I like the Grayven chapters and all the other Alt-Pauls we have. It's fun to see him interacting with and changing so many other stories and universes with his mere presence. It honestly makes me feel like I get to read a dozen different great stories instead of just one, which I like. I do t feel any problem in keeping them all straight either. The titles usually clear up any confusion, and even if they don't, you can just read a bit in to find out yourself.

I just forget what happened in the previous segment a lot of the time when it cuts off abruptly. Like here, the SI was in the middle of an investigation, and then it switched for a few days, and now it's right back into the investigation five minutes in-universe time later

"How is this possible?!"

Twilight flits back and forth between Sweetie Belle and Apple Bloom, mane becoming increasingly disheveled as her panic level rises.

"This isn't scientifically possible!"

"Hm." Sunset lowers her chalk from the blackboard. "No, their methodology is sound. I'm just not sure what they used for a power source."

Discord appears-.

"Discord!" Twilight flies up to his head and grabs onto his horns with her forehooves, puling his head towards her. "You did this. You did this? … You did this. Turn them back right-!"

WOOMPF!

"Great going, Squirt!"

Scootaloo rockets past the crystal palace balcony, the air disruption sending manes and scrolls alike askew. Rainbow Dash watches from on-high and clearly couldn't be prouder. Her parents and aunts on the other hand look a good deal more uncertain about events, their heads moving in unison to follow Scootaloo as she shoots across the sky.

Twilight takes a moment to straighten out her mane before regrabbing Discord. "Turn them back right now."

"A-hem." Discord lowers to the ground from where he'd been floating, leaving his horns in her hooves. He adopts an expression of upstanding hurt. "I'm positively offended that you would suggest such a thing."

Twilight tosses the horns -which vanish and reappear on his head a moment later- and lands on the table, staring at him with extreme suspicion.

"I am Discord…" He glances at me. "'Lord of Chaos'. Becoming an alicorn requires Harmony magic." He puts his hands on his chest, eyes wide in hurt indignation. "Even if I wanted to, how could I possibly do that?"

"Hmmmmm." Twilight hubs her chin with her left forehoof, her eyes narrowing suspiciously.

"He's right." Sunset nods. "He couldn't do it with his own magic, and he can't take the Elements off the Tree without getting burned by the magic."

"Infamy, infamy!" Discord shudders. "That tree's got it in fer me."

I nod, smiling. "Classic."

He points at me and winks.

"No." Twilight keeps on glaring. "You had something to do with this."

Discord coughs. Then he coughs again, harder, raising his fist to his mouth. Then he starts choking, before expectorating a piece of… Stone? Out of his mouth and beaning Twilight on the snout. She stumbles back and lands on her haunches, while Starlight catches it with her thaumokinesis.

"It's…" She peers at it. "A flake of stone. But it feels… Harmonious."

"I tried to teach it not to be, but you know how stone is. It never listens."

Pinkie Pie (Ponyville) perks up. "I've never had that problem! Let me try!"

She bounces over, grabs the flake from Sunset and… Pulls a jeweller's eyeglass out of somewhere so she can take a closer look.

"Hmmm."

Then the eyeglass vanishes and she holds it up to her ear.

"Uh-huh. Uh-huh." She nods. "Uh-huh."

I lean down towards Applejack. "Can she actually..?"

"Ain't nothin' good gunna come of askin' that question, fellah."

"RI-lly?!" Pinkie stares at the fragment, a look of shock and amazement on her face. "That's crazy!"

Twilight and Sunset exchange glances, and Sunset nods towards Pinkie. Twilight nods and hops off the table, walking over to Pinkie. "What is it, Pinkie?"

"You remember when Discord was a statue?" She holds up the fragment. "This was part of the statue!"

Rarity looks disgusted. "That's a piece of his skin? Pinkie!"

Discord rolls his eyes, and comes up with a six and a one. "It cracked off when I was freed the first time. Think of it as a mud pack."

Rarity shies away a little. "Even so…"

"'Freed'?" Twilight perks up. "You were freed? How? By who?"

"Yes, yes, your teacher, and… Probably magic? I was stone at the time." He turns his eyes to stone, blinking at her. "I couldn't see a thing."

"No, not that time. The first time. Was it Tirek? Chrysalis? Sombra?"

"Um." Sweetie nervously raises her right forehoof. "Princess Twilight?"

But Twilight isn't listening, being far too deep into her own panic. "I can't believe I didn't check!"

I smile. "You also didn't check-" Sunset glares at me, but I ignore her. "-how many of those other statues in the garden were also former villains."

Her face falls. "I also didn't check how many of those other statues in the garden were also former villains." Her wings open in alarm. "I also didn't check-mmpf!"

Spike shoves the paper bag over her snout.

Sweetie and Apple Bloom look at each other, then take a few steps towards the blackboard. Sweetie raises her right forehoof again. "Um. Princess Sunset Shimmer?"

Sunset recovered the fragment from Pinkie and is studying it with… A device I don't immediately recognise. "Hm? Yes?"

"It was us. It was by accident, but we had a fight next to the statue-."

"You and your two closest friends. And from how everyone was reacting, I'm guessing your cutie marks are new, too." She glances at the blackboard and makes a few notes. "Yeah, that aughta do it."

Apple Bloom glances awkwardly at Twilight before returning her attention to Sunset. "So what happens now?"

"A cute-ceñeara for the three of you. Then you'll probably start exploring your talents. I think it would be a good idea if you got extra lessons in your tribal magic, but outside of basic flight and thaumokinesis it's up to you how much you study."

Sweetie looks a little hopeful. "We're not in trouble?"

"Well, not with me. I've wanted more ponies to become alicorns since I learned that it was even possible. And I'm honestly impressed how quickly you pulled it off." She looks thoughtful. "Though I suppose it's not an approach that could be easily replicated."

"And are we princesses?"

"Uh, well, 'alicorn' and 'princess' used to be synonymous, but I haven't been crowned and I don't have a formal role in the Equestrian government. So, technically 'no', but other ponies might call you that anyway."

"WAAA-HOO!"

Scootaloo lands amongst her family with a thud, quickly nuzzles everyone and then trots over to her friends. "Everyone finished freaking out yet?"

"Um." Sweetie looks over to where Twilight is still huffing through the bag, eyes wide. "Not quite. Did you have fun?"

"Flying is the best!" She starts, then checks her flaming scooter cutie mark. "Or second best, I guess. But it's really great fun! Only…" She looks a little perturbed. "I'm not sure how to use my new wings with my scooter."

I step closer and crouch down. "Well, that's hardly a problem. If that doesn't work, you can use unicorn pony magic to do tricks or earth pony strength to propel yourself."

And she perks right back up again. "Hey, that's right! Thanks, Mister Grayven!"

"You're welcome. You know, I think I've solved nearly as many problems as I've caused this trip." Behind me, Twilight falls over, unconscious. "And that's progress."

Cutie Mark Crusaders Coup Attempt is on the horizon

Edit: it also makes sense that pieces of stone from Discord's statue-prison were harmony aligned and held large amounts of magic power, given that it feels like that's what you'd need to contain Discord for any amount of time.

"How is this possible?!"

Twilight flits back and forth between Sweetie Belle and Apple Bloom, mane becoming increasingly disheveled as her panic level rises.
Oh, boy. She is totally fraying at the edges with panic, isn't she? It's understandable, though, with kids gaining Alicornhood like it's the early Buu Saga's Saiyajin preteens. And the problem is how they managed it.

"This isn't scientifically possible!"

"Hm." Sunset lowers her chalk from the blackboard. "No, their methodology is sound. I'm just not sure what they used for a power source."
Hopefully not directly fuelled by Discord. That would be worryingly skeevy.

Discord appears-.

"Discord!" Twilight flies up to his head and grabs onto his horns with her forehooves, puling his head towards her. "You did this. You did this? … You did this. Turn them back right-!"
Please don't go totally psycho on the embodiment of chaos, Twilight...

WOOMPF!

"Great going, Squirt!"
Oh, no. Rainbow Dash egging on the rookie but super-powered flyer? This can't be good.

Man, she is probably capable of a Sonic Rainboom at this stage, with a little gravity assist. Which is terrifying.

Ah, detachable body parts. Classic Discord.

With great amusement, no doubt. And the willing assistance of Harmony itself because it's funny.

"Hmmmmm." Twilight hubs her chin with her left forehoof, her eyes narrowing suspiciously.

"He's right." Sunset nods. "He couldn't do it with his own magic, and he can't take the Elements off the Tree without getting burned by the magic."
But, if he could find something else laden with Harmony energies...

"Infamy, infamy!" Discord shudders. "That tree's got it in fer me."

I nod, smiling. "Classic."
Thats' the case when you're at odds with its' very nature, really.

He points at me and winks.

"No." Twilight keeps on glaring. "You had something to do with this."
Discord is such a troll, in the internet sense. Anything to get a chuckle out of someone in his audience...

Excuse you, Discord. Watch where you're coughing up... Hey, wait...

"It's…" She peers at it. "A flake of stone. But it feels… Harmonious."

"I tried to teach it not to be, but you know how stone is. It never listens."
Ah, I see. A piece of Harmonytouched stone from when the Princesses sealed him away? Caught in his teeth, by the looks of it.

Pinkie Pie (Ponyville) perks up. "I've never had that problem! Let me try!"

She bounces over, grabs the flake from Sunset and… Pulls a jeweller's eyeglass out of somewhere so she can take a closer look.
Ah, still a bunch of Pinkies still hanging around, I see, if the Renegade is still keeping track of them.

"Hmmm."

Then the eyeglass vanishes and she holds it up to her ear.
And before anyone asks, she is from a Rock Farmer family. She knows stones.

"Uh-huh. Uh-huh." She nods. "Uh-huh."

I lean down towards Applejack. "Can she actually..?"

"Ain't nothin' good gunna come of askin' that question, fellah."
She's not quite a stone whisperer like her sisters, but she's not a complete novice.

Though it's hard to tell how much of this little skit is actual skill and how much is her comedic timing.

"You remember when Discord was a statue?" She holds up the fragment. "This was part of the statue!"

Rarity looks disgusted. "That's a piece of his skin? Pinkie!"
...I'm reminded of Gargoyles, the old Disney show. Did they just grow a sheathe of stone hen they fell asleep, or convert a layer of skin cells into a calcified coating?

Discord rolls his eyes, and comes up with a six and a one. "It cracked off when I was freed the first time. Think of it as a mud pack."

Rarity shies away a little. "Even so…"
Literal visual gags, of course. At least he didn't have the dice split to roll seven on 1d6.

"'Freed'?" Twilight perks up. "You were freed? How? By who?"

"Yes, yes, your teacher, and… Probably magic? I was stone at the time." He turns his eyes to stone, blinking at her. "I could see a thing."
Suuuure, you could. Admittedly, he did get calcified a couple of times on-screen.

Oh, dear. panic attack incoming. Spike, ready the paper bag!

I smile. "You also didn't check-" Sunset glares at me, but I ignore her. "-how many of those other statues in the garden were also former villains."

Her face falls. "I also didn't check how many of those other statues in the garden were also former villains." Her wings open in alarm. "I also didn't check-mmpf!"
...That is a concerning idea. I suspect a great many are not, though.

Spike shoves the paper bag over her snout.

Sweetie and Apple Bloom look at each other, then take a few steps towards the blackboard. Sweetie raises her right forehoof again. "Um. Princess Sunset Shimmer?"
Thank you, Spike. I'm surprised the three of them are so self-assured in their altered forms, though. Aren't they noticeably taller and longer-legged? I guess improved proprioception is a bonus of the change.

Sunset recovered the fragment from Pinkie and is studying it with… A device I don't immediately recognise. "Hm? Yes?"

"It was us. It was by accident, but we had a fight next to the statue-."
I swear, if someone pulls out an actual Tricorder...

That disHarmony was enough to disrupt the spell, yes.

"A cute-ceñeara for the three of you. Then you'll probably start exploring your talents. I think it would be a good idea of you got extra lessons in your tribal magic, but outside of basic flight and thaumokinesis it's up to you how much you study."

Sweetie looks a little hopeful. "We're not in trouble?"
What's done is done, easier to ask forgiveness than permission, and all that...

"Well, not with me. I've wanted more ponies to become alicorns since I learned that it was even possible. And I'm honestly impressed how quickly you pulled it off." She looks thoughtful. "Though I suppose it's not an approach that could be easily replicated."

"And are we princesses?"
Sunset's method is easier to replicate, if needing a little more setup, true.

"Uh, well, 'alicorn' and 'princess' used to be synonymous, but I haven't been crowned and I don't have a formal role in the Equestrian government. So, technically 'no', but other ponies might call you that anyway."

"WAAA-HOO!"
Don't forget it'll come with responsibilites too.

Give Twilight a few minutes. Once she stops hyperventilating, she might be a little more open to explanations.

I shudder to imagine the kind of kick-offs she could manage now. She might have to reinforce its frame and wheels or they'll shatter or melt.

And she perks right back up again. "Hey, that's right! Thanks, Mister Grayven!"

"You're welcome. You know, I think I've solved nearly as many problems as I've caused this trip." Behind me, Twilight falls over, unconscious. "And that's progress."
And then he's promptly bucked by every pony there. Certainly, Sunset could give him one for that little comment.

Sadly, Renegade, when the 'solved' problems create new ones, I'm pretty sure that still falls in the red. Especially when you've now got three rookie Alicorns to deal with and train up. Somehow, i don't think they'll be able to learn some of the things they need at Ponyville Elementary. Though Diamond Tiara and Silver Spoon might well spontaneously combust form jealousy when they hear...

"I could see a thing."
"I couldn't see a thing."

"You're welcome. You know, I think I've solved nearly as many problems as I've caused this trip." Behind me, Twilight falls over, unconscious. "And that's progress."
Discord applauded in the background, while Celestia slowly began looming behind him, larger and larger, Brighter and BRIGHTER!

@Mr Zoat, I was rereading the part of the story which introduced the Question, and it has me curious as to the fates of him and his fellow Anti-Life infected individuals. Not merely those who were affected, but we're truly infected with it, which includes Empress, Black Orchid, and Vincent Edge.

Other than Vincent, I hadn't really thought about them.

The Question went back to his lighthouse, trying to find clarity. It didn't work and he ended up as a Justifier. Black Orchid was sheltered by the green but has become noticibly inhuman in manner and expression. Empress was stuck back as a broadcaster, but is now pretty much fine and no longer has an Anti-Life fragment. Mannheim kept Vincent Edge around and un-Anti-Lifed to observe his suffering, and he's now wandering from place to place doing whatever charity needs doing.

.
Oh, like you'd remember what the first OMAC looked like without a wiki.

To be fair, I remember what he looks like, but only because of how stupid his appearance is.

Other than Vincent, I hadn't really thought about them.

Oh yeah, I've been meaning to ask: How do ghosts like Greta Hayes or Boston Brand (if he exists here) react to anti-life? Were they even affected at all? And if Siskin/Terror Thing was still around, would he have been more resistant to it due to his yellow enlightenment, just like how Paul was due to his orange enlightenment?

Mannheim kept Vincent Edge around and un-Anti-Lifed to observe his suffering, and he's now wandering from place to place doing whatever charity needs doing.

I thought Vincent Edge got his heart ripped out and placed into some machine that Manheim had doing...something in the Aztec afterlife?

I think Mammon was planning to turn Greta into some kind of agent if his, so she may have been in Hell during Anti-Life.

So basically she just endured a different kind of suffering.

Boston may potentially havr some protection from that goddess that he works for.

Look, if you ask me to pull something out of my arse, don't be surprised when it's shit.

No, Mammon doesn't torture the staff. Not unless they've really messed up.

It being understood that 'inflict pain upon' isn't the same as actual dedicated torture.
Boston may potentially have some protection from that goddess that he works for.
Maybe? I don't really know the character.

Good lord, if her soul is in hell, that's just plain terrible. No matter what universe or continuity she lives in, poor Greta Hayes just CANNOT catch a break. Well, at least she got a (somewhat) happy ending in the original Young Justice comic and got to live a normal life with Cissie and Tanya, so I guess there's that.

Until Barry decided to stick his dick in the timeline and created Flashpoint/The New 52.

Look, if you ask me to pull something out of my arse, don't be surprised when it's shit.

Wow, seeing a part of DC that you don't know about is rare.

That's good to hear, then. If Greta is with Mammon, then at least we know he won't immediately torture her (or worse, give her soul to Billy). Operative word here being immediately. Then again, if Greta was in hell, I would assume that Billy would have hunted her down to capture her and torture her already.

But seriously though, can the Anti-Life affect the dead or not?
