  • Due to issues with external spam filters, QQ is currently unable to send any mail to Microsoft E-mail addresses. This includes any account at live.com, hotmail.com or msn.com. Signing up to the forum with one of these addresses will result in your verification E-mail never arriving. For best results, please use a different E-mail provider for your QQ address.
  • For prospective new members, a word of warning: don't use common names like Dennis, Simon, or Kenny if you decide to create an account. Spammers have used them all before you and gotten those names flagged in the anti-spam databases. Your account registration will be rejected because of it.
  • Since it has happened MULTIPLE times now, I want to be very clear about this. You do not get to abandon an account and create a new one. You do not get to pass an account to someone else and create a new one. If you do so anyway, you will be banned for creating sockpuppets.
  • Due to the actions of particularly persistent spammers and trolls, we will be banning disposable email addresses from today onward.

XF2 upgrade

Warning Sarcasm ahead!

The xf2 upgrade progress is much like Schrodinger's cat. Until it is observed no one knows, and if you know you know. :V

Last thing staff heard was back in November when we got to play in the testbed, which was/is still on the Oct 26th 2023 snapshot of the forum.
(on a unrelated note we have had 5.5k members join, 430k posts and 1300 topics/discussions opened in that time)

5500 members? Do like 90% have like 1 or no posts? Cause QQ feels too small for that many people to be added without a noticeable change.

Given you need an account to read the NSFW forums, we probably have a higher percentage of account-having-but-non-posting lurkers than normal.

I'm going to put things in perspective.

This thread was started in 2019. The XF2 upgrade was being talked about while I was still a mod.

I fucking quit literally this week.

It has been years at this point. Like god, four years.

Given you need an account to read the NSFW forums, we probably have a higher percentage of account-having-but-non-posting lurkers than normal.

Like, 90% of the accounts on QQ are basically lurkers. People who have more than a couple hundred posts are the exception, not the norm.

I remember when I still had access to the testbed that I looked at one of my threads and saw that 1,400 people were watching it. That thread only ever gets around 60-70 votes, meaning that a huge amount of people read the thread but don't ever post in it.

I can absolutely believe that 5,500 people joined and nobody's heard a peep from them.

Seriously, can somebody explain to me why the fuck so many users have such a hate-on for XF2? I'll admit I like the XF1 UI better overall, but that doesn't explain the people going 'if the site ever upgrades I am leaving forever!!11!1!', let alone that one forum where even mentioning XF2 is grounds for a ban.

People hate change.

That's pretty much it in a nutshell. There's some more nuance but it's not nearly as pithy as a three-word response is.

XF2 does have a problem with a lot of things silently breaking upon a lack of JavaScript and/or cookies. Less of an issue for a regular user who enables them for that site, but for a security-conscious dabbler it can be a PITA. XF1 breaks some things (obviously, login, but notoriously also search functionality) without cookies, but it mostly works without JavaScript and usually you get a "hey, enable cookies".

To give the example I remember off the top of my head - SV has/had a thing where upon being given a warning you need to acknowledge the warning before you can do anything. Except the warning popup needs JavaScript to display, and if JavaScript is turned off you're just locked out of the entire site until you turn it back on, with no indication as to the source of the problem.

As for why some people go nuts about this - some people have no sense of proportion, and these people are loud so they're salient well beyond their fraction of the population.

Also the clusterfuck of horribleness that SV and SB were immediately after the upgrades left a rather poor impression of XF2 overall. Remember, the launch version of XF2 was outright missing some features from XF1 and also ugly as shit.

I got curious about Upgrading XenForo, so I've read the manual page about it and wondered if QQ is using add-ons incompatible with XenForo 2?

So I noticed that on SB it seems that if you ignore a thread it disappears and other threads move up in the list so you still have 30 threads on a page while here on QQ it just hides the thread on the page so you just end up having less than 20 showing which is kind of annoying when you only have like eight threads showing on a page. Is that difference a feature of XF2?

Yes. Technically it's a difference in the XF2 version of the ignore thread add-on, but functionally it's just an XF2 thing.

Dude, over 10% of your total posts are complaints about XenForo 2.

We get it already: you don't like XF2. Repeating this over and over again like a broken record isn't going to accomplish anything.

It's worth complaining about. Xenforo 2 is built from the ground up to be a time-wasting advertising delivery platform in a way XF1 isn't. It's designed to clutter up your screen with unnecessary information, grab your attention and make it harder to find what you're looking for.

To give you an example, XF1 respects search operators, showing posts with both quoted words, a total of 3 pages:

In contrast, XF2 shows posts with either word, increasing the number of results to a whopping 21 pages:

https://i.imgur.com/KyJeAkg.png

So called "similar threads":
EOyQvZY

https://i.imgur.com/QTQukEX.png

To top it off, we have the aforementioned issue of threadmarks not showing and the website being unfriendly to non-javascript users. It's also expensive:

XF2 is à la many websites in the past decadebuilt to exploit the attention economy. Aren't we all sick of websites becoming worse like this yet?

Is anyone else suspicious of the fact that this guy's first and only post on this website was specifically to bitch about Xenforo 2? Because I sure as hell am.

I'm not sure what you're implying, but I'm mainly a lurker *shrugs*. We all have to make our first post somewhere. There was nothing I felt was worth replying to before

Anyway, regarding the XF2 issue I'd recommend the mods of this site convert this forum to a free and open source one like some of the ones listed here, which are still being updated: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_Internet_forum_software

Its nice to see someone else who agrees with me about XenForo 2 being horrible.:)

You were literally just complaining about threadmarks not working right on XF2, and now you want to switch to one that just straight up doesn't have them at all?

For that matter, all those other forum softwares are missing features found in XF1 let alone 2. They'd all be even more of a downgrade than XF2 would be.

There is a reason that nearly all surviving forums have migrated to XF over the past decade or so.
