But if you consider the Gu Clan's history, then you might see the hints in how it played a hand in the fall of the Xiao Clan, as much as the Hun Clan at least. And if Xiao Xuan was really BFF with Gu Yuan, then how is it that the Xiao Clan only has a DaDouShi by the start of the series?

So if the audience didn't see things from the interests of Xiao Yan's perspective and from the Xiao Family in general, as how many SIs seem to insert into the Xiao Clan, then the audience should not be partial towards the Gu Clan and instead hate them for being two-faced backstabbers.
