Amelia, Worm AU [Complete]

So Taylor and Amelia died in the fight. All that's left is the Spacewhale and the daughter Talia. :(

Great ending, but I'm sad that they can't have more lesbian se- *cough* character building and relationship stuff.
I still want my threesome
and my kitten shower

I rarely cry at sad. I always cry at epic / amazing / awe-inspiring. And when something happens that means "And the world moves to follow the pattern the characters create". Needless to say, I had to wait to get to my computer to write this, since my tablet is too soaked with tears of awe to type on. Just so amazing, and wow, a wonderful evolution of characters, story, and the world as it was and will be. A wonderfully great job of balancing length, character development and interaction, and actual plot. You wrote a ridiculous amount in an absurdly short period of time, and did an incredible job of it. I am definitely recommending this story as the definitive Worm story on the web, and definitely my favorite ending, outshining even canon. It's wonderful in that the end still comes as it does, but in a changed way that makes all the differences. In three words:

We are together.

I went to a cafe to read this last chapter, and when I walked in (read this chapter) it was playing one song that fit the chapter incredibly well. It then switched to another, almost uncanny, perfect fit.

And now for something completely different.
Now, consider the 400 series of errors:
408 Request Timeout
409 Conflict
410 Gone
411 Length Required
412 Precondition Failed (RFC 7232)
413 Request Entity Too Large

Conflict. Entity too large. Expectation failed... TanaNari did write the rest of the chapters as a theme.
FTFY. Also, amazing match-up with the story:
408 Pantheon start with their emergency measures, including enlisting parahumans from the Birdcage since they are out of time.
409 Speaks for itself
410 All their defenses crumble and Taylor and Amelia are the last ones standing. Their strongest measures have died or are lost to them
411 Length is not quite the correct dimension, but Taylia know that they need more firepower and dimensions, and so seek them out by finding Eden's corpse hidden in Cauldron's depths, while Lisa, Alexandria, and Saint each reveal parts of their hidden depths to Taylia.
412 [BETRAYAL] [DECEPTION] Zion cannot predict what Avalon will do, since Avalon has learned deception.
413 …?

Be honest. That's enough to make anyone smug forever. Mohandis fucking Ghandi would have spent all his days smugging it up if he had that on his resume.
Well, probably. After all, he did more-or-less try to live his whole life as a reference to Siddhārtha Gautama, the man who made the smug contentment of knowing a religious.
Siddhārtha Gautama aka the Buddha

It's the shard entities use to talk to each other. Jack Slash used it as budget PTV vs capes. Taylia has a version edited by Avalon to be the shipping chart incarnate. She's going to roam the multi-earths in sandals and a robe teaching capes how to power-bond.

I designed a new cycle, one inspired by my stories and experiences, a pattern. The Communication shard had already learned to be an expert in finding broken, damaged human beings thanks to its host. People missing something intrinsic in being people.

It would guide them, bring them together. A pattern learned and repeated from my own history. It would find the Dragon and her Knight. The Maker and her General. The Thinker and her Warrior. The Seamstress and her Soldier. The Queen and her Jester. The Rebel and the Mother. The Pathmaker, Orphan, and Guardian.

We needed more to be what these had become. People who would love each other, replace the holes in each other's souls, become as one person. People who would sacrifice themselves for each other, people willing to sacrifice their own humanity in order to protect it.

She would be strong, beautiful, brilliant by the standards of this species. And when the time came, she would be bonded with the Communications shard, and given the knowledge of her mothers/elder sibling.
Nope, not crying. It's just that this buffalo chicken is really spicy and I must have gotten some in my eyes.

Tana, despite your claims to the contrary, this is the happiest worm fic. I've seen sad and depressing conclusions. I've seen just conclusions. I've seen porn-y conclusions. I've never seen someone resolve the fundamental unhappiness in the setting, and I've never seen a romance that wasn't in some way cheap or contrived. Taylor and Amelia, and Avalon, leave behind a legacy of hope and real, deep love. It's beautiful.

"I can't believe she's gone." The host of one of the kinetic energy shards leaned against the host of an infiltration shard. They were clearly mourning the death of one of their own, the Sting host. "I... I know we fought a lot. But I loved her." She turned and buried her face in the other female's shoulder.
That's... Clotho and the elf chick?
The host of the Culling shard and the host of one of the bioanalysis shards sat together, entwined in a bizarre way. Sex, I remember, it's called sex. I should remember that, I've done it enough times.
Either time is passing at a funny rate, or those guys got their clothes off in no time flat.
I ignored that and focused on the female. Her bioanalysis shard was expressing itself in a bizarre way. I peaked in. Oh, her biology was altered to be nonhuman even before she was taken as a host. Another bioanalysis host wanted to ensure she could never become a host herself. In the process leaving only her own shard as a viable host, and the biological program to be forever loyal to her sister added the necessary emotional stress to let powers manifest. Fascinating.
Oh lord. This, and the gender identity realignment, and the 'don't freak out about Bonesaw change' are why you never let Clarice edit your mind.
If we had waited more than another week, we would have begun losing our powers.
Huh, my predication was wrong.
It would find the Dragon and her Knight. The Maker and her General. The Thinker and her Warrior. The Seamstress and her Soldier. The Queen and her Jester. The Rebel and the Mother. The Pathmaker, Orphan, and Guardian.
Okay:
Dragon/Defiant
Amelia/Taylor
Eden/Scion
Clotho/Atropos
Emma/Zach
Rey/Ruth
Missy/Clarice/Theo
We left that under a new file named Taylia.
Emma: Please tell me that we're not going to press clone on this one, and see what comes out.
Lisa: *smugness* It'll be an adventure!

But seriously, who's going to raise Taylia? Did Avalon give any thought to that?
I found Taylor and Amelia amongst the clones. In a way, they were me. In a way, they were my mothers. They were too close to their powers, too much a part of their Shards that what came out of the cloning pods would not be them anymore. I erased their codes. And, with one last act of humanity, replaced their data with a new one. The perfect expression of both girls' genetic structures. She would be strong, beautiful, brilliant by the standards of this species. And when the time came, she would be bonded with the Communications shard, and given the knowledge of her mothers/elder sibling.
...and her name, will be "Mary Sue."

But I really like this. It sounds like a great premise.
We expended power where we could, locating the damaged remains of Dragon's systems. The cloning bays and their data. Not a lot for us to work with. To our surprise, we discovered that Dragon was in fact a Cape. That shouldn't have been possible. Still, it was true, and she left a remarkable impact upon the shard, far greater than the ones left by Taylor and Amelia. My avatar body smiled reflexively. This is perfect.
So, I guess Dragon isn't coming back?

I guess Defiant can always get it on with her daughter.

peeked
The humans either fled, dragging their wounded.
either fled or what?
Missing a word
too much a part of their Shards that what came
Missing a word

Whoa. I can't believe that the story is over. Congratulations, this is easily one of the top 10 Worm fanfics. Hard to believe so much as happened since you started posting less then a year ago.

Emma: Please tell me that we're not going to press clone on this one, and see what comes out.
Lisa: *smugness* It'll be an adventure!

But seriously, who's going to raise Taylia? Did Avalon give any thought to that?
It takes a village. ...or a planet. ...or several planets.

("Raise" isn't a perfect term, since, as a clone, she'd likely pop out already mostly grown. But I'm pretty sure she'd be Pantheon's collective child.)

No one likes a braggart Ack.
Look, when someone goes, "Wow, this story did this, it's so original!" and I'm thinking, "Well, it was when I did it", am I supposed to just not say anything?

I'm taking nothing away from Amelia when I say this. It's an awesome story, and I love it, a lot. It went in a totally different direction to HCtBB, reached a much wider scope, did things that I never would have thought of, and totally smashed the ending.

But when people praise a particular thing that happened, that I already did, is it really bragging to say, "Yeah ... I actually did that already"?

Consider the Taylor/Amy sex thing. "Take charge, overwhelm her until she asks for it."

It's more or less exactly what I did with Andrea/Taylor in Recoil, only in that one, Andrea never pushed Taylor to the point of initiating it herself. But the number of people I got screaming about how I 'made Taylor gay' was astonishing. I had to explain many times that no, Taylor isn't gay. In this one, TanaNari somehow managed to get that point across without needing explanation.

Anyway, story's about done, so I won't be doing that any more.

Look, when someone goes, "Wow, this story did this, it's so original!" and I'm thinking, "Well, it was when I did it", am I supposed to just not say anything?
That is an option.

Amusingly, there are people dropped Amelia before they even got together and cite turning Taylor gay as one of the reasons.

I'm kind of hoping that TanaNari decides to do a series about Zach/Zach's Expy in a different world. I'd read the ever loving shit out of that.
Good news! That's a possibility!

Zach would be a distinct character in Price. Not necessarily *the* main, but certainly *a* main.

Wow.

This was a great ending, I honestly don't know what else to say. I kinda want to see at least a little bit of Taylia and the world after all this, but apart from that all I can say is wow.

Also, have you considered posting on AO3? Your fic's big enough that it would be far easier to on a ereader or phone (and AO3 allows both). If you're not interesting in doing the legwork would you give me permission to do it? I'd give you credit and link back to this thread, as well as whatever you're moving onto next.
*bows* Hey, if you want to, go for it. It took me several hours just to copy the first couple hundred chapters off of SB and bring them here.

Well that's a suitably epic ending. Saddening with the partial loss/mixture of identities, but going out to cull the whale-pack will save so much life. And as Heiress builds her library of powers, she might be the one to solve entropy and save/recreate the universe.
I think you mean Avalon.

This is a great line. Our gift to the cosmos is self-interest.
CinemaSins: Teenaged Girls are dicks to omnicidal space whales.

412 chapters. It's come a long way from two girls who teamed up fighting the S9. Feels odd to see such a long-running story end, but it's a good conclusion, so I'm not sad. Great work, Tananari. I hope to see more from you in the future.
It freaks me the fuck out, honestly. This has been an average of four or more hours of my life every fucking day for the better part of a year.

That's...kind of poetic, actually

Not even going to try to wrap my head around more than that - plenty of things have gone over my head over the course of this story, and I'm content to either continue to miss them at the end, or have someone else spell it out. But it was a hell of an ending.
I worked a few in. Including a tribute to Silencio. I don't know if DeviantD is still reading this story. But if not, hopefully she'll come by and take a look some day and see it.

Or one of you assholes will annoy her into reading it. Either/or.

This makes this, what, the third completed Worm fic?
There aren't many. Except Ack's porn. Include that and it goes up to around 80ish.

Taylia:
- Abandoned two individual identities, merging instead into a gestalt organism; and
- Spends all her time saving billions of lesser beings from cosmic bullies for no direct personal benefit.
Why does she do this? "Dedication to the individual!"

No benefit except that Taylor can't be happy unless she's killing the unkillable.

But, hey, I like to leave my endings up to reader interpretation.

Not in the Wildbow fashion of "magical coma or reality, you decide!" or Sopranos "black screen!"... what happens in the story, happens in the story, a good- or at least confident- author doesn't hide behind "you decide the ending". But in the sense of "what message should I take from this... is this a happy ending, a sad one, what?"- that, I feel, is only hurt when an author tries to force an opinion.

And upon a slight reread I am even more horrified for Taylia. Getting the memories of her parents and then becoming a space shark through Abbadon's corpse would propably be somewhat unsettling.
Not only that, but CLEARLY the plan is to harvest humans by drawing them into the same bonds (which have been called psychic rape by a lot of the haters of this story) and produce a ready supply of new volunteers (re: human sacrifices) consciousnesses to power MORE space sharks.

Woo! So much to talk about.

Ending with them making their daughter and propping her up to be their power-interaction Jesus with Jackie-boy's shard of all things is a pretty fucking great ending.

Sad to see Taylor and Amelia didn't make it either as clones or as fully dominant inside Heiress, but not surprised. So much of the story was about them becoming more than they were originally.
The death of the individual, the evolution of the species. Space whale murder!

The Silencio shoutout was that they literally became the eldritch horror shipping chart and fixed up their friends?
Yup.

Hurray Libecca and Glaidolon! Sally(Libbah?)! Emma can feel Zach! Unless he died, since he can't be revived.
And they, like so many others, shall become space sharks some day.

The Scion betrayal was oh so sweet. Much better than him just submitting.
I might have went with a "nicer" ending. But fuck Scion.

/salute. Looking forward to the epilogues.
Me, too!

Woo! Screeching girls! I'm a rockstar now! Except without the drugs. Or the fame. Or any musical talent to speak of. Or... what were we talking about again?

Well, shit. Now what am I going to do with my newly freed up time?
How do you think *I* feel. I probably could have learned a language on the time dedicated to this story.

Congratulation.

This is actually one of the most cheerful ending to Worm I have ever seen.
Really?

I meant, all the named cast are alive and having healthy relationship with others.
Or have been murdered and replaced with toddler aged dopplegangers with their faces and memories that everyone just pretends is them.

Trigger got improved and actually helped people.
In order to produce space sharks.

And we have the front seat to the biggest space whale hunt ever!

Great Job, Tananari!!!
Well, yeah. If it was all horrible, it wouldn't be a legitimate fix fic.

So Taylor and Amelia died in the fight. All that's left is the Spacewhale and the daughter Talia. :(

Great ending, but I'm sad that they can't have more lesbian se- *cough* character building and relationship stuff.

Amelia and Taylor died long, long ago.

Nope, not crying. It's just that this buffalo chicken is really spicy and I must have gotten some in my eyes.

Also mind manipulation, death of individuality, and a plan to genocide all the space whales.

Taylor and Amelia died long before that.
Exactly!

Either time is passing at a funny rate, or those guys got their clothes off in no time flat.
Umm... it was precognition, bro. Time isn't a factor. But they weren't wearing clothes at any point in that scene.

Oh lord. This, and the gender identity realignment, and the 'don't freak out about Bonesaw change' are why you never let Clarice edit your mind.
That's the reason?

But seriously, who's going to raise Taylia? Did Avalon give any thought to that?
Heir apparent to a multiplanetary empire... She'll be raised by the temporary regents. Not THAT Regent. Taylor and Amelia were still human enough to want their child to keep her virginity past age eight.

So, I guess Dragon isn't coming back?

I guess Defiant can always get it on with her daughter.
No, sorry. And No. Just no.

("Raise" isn't a perfect term, since, as a clone, she'd likely pop out already mostly grown.
Nope. Their daughter's getting a more or less normal life.

Isn't this a happier Ending that Hope Come to BB?
Umm... wouldn't know. No offense to Ack, but I don't really read his stuff. But if you consider all the stuff stated above *still* a happy ending. Then.... maybe?

So is the Original Fiction you are planning to work on a spiritual sequel that looks similar to the first planet that humanity colonizes after civilization has reached a stabilization point?
I DO actually have a biopunk scifi setting I might do some day, some of its elements are seen in Amelia.

I was trying to be playful, but yes, it is.

It comes across like you are trying to steal the spotlight when you burst onto the scene every time someone says that Amelia was the first time they saw [X], just to make sure that everyone knows that you actually thought of it first.

So only other people are allowed to cite my works as having happened?

Amusingly, there are people dropped Amelia before they even got together and cite turning Taylor gay as one of the reasons.
Personally, I considered Taylor getting the If it's You, It's Okay brainmod to be a perfectly reasonable solution to the situation. Just having her turn around one day and saying, "You know, I think I'll be gay now, for fanservice," would have screwed with SoD (except when it's a porn. Because porn). But the Rapture solution worked well also.

Also, regarding finished Worm fics:
There aren't many. Except Ack's porn. Include that and it goes up to around 80ish.

I haven't done that many porn fics. And in fact, I've completed a few SFW fics. These are all on fanfiction.net:

Alternate Beginnings: 6 chapters, 22,500 words
Don't Worry Be Happy: one-shot, 2,300 words
HCtBB: 127 chapters, 527,000 words (plus more if NSFW is counted)
I, Scion 3 chapters, pure crack: 9400 words
Shadow Stalker: Advent of a Hero: 14 chapters, 53,000 words
Unfavourable Outcome: one-shot, 1,400 words

So yeah, not all porny :D

A suitably epic ending and in a method I have theorized but hadn't thought of doing this way. My version was always another Entity going the Avalon route just because it's more efficient, my usual suspect being Abbadon with the whole of Worm being his PtV'd method of disposing of both of them for almost no effort.

One amusing thought comes to mind, exactly how many 'Save the Space Whales!' organizations are going to pop up to save this gentle and majestic species from over-predation by the horribly unnatural Space Sharks threatening them with extinction?

Hey now! I like the story and I call it psychic rape! ;)

Besides, this is a horror story, in a horror story human sacrifice is a valid method of reproduction. Plus, you can also make porn of it, for certain values of the word "porn".

Or have been murdered and replaced with toddler aged dopplegangers with their faces and memories that everyone just pretends is them.

I'm too much of a transhuman fan to place too much value on continuity of consciousness without a quantifiable reason. Nevertheless in at least Taylor and Amelia's cases this may not have been entirely accurate depending on how much they'd been swallowed by their shards by the time they died for the first time.:D

Amelia and Taylor died long, long ago.

Ah! But did "they" die before the first organic death? By the time Taylia had become a thing, how much of their consciousness was really all that human anymore anyway?

Personally, I considered Taylor getting the If it's You, It's Okay brainmod to be a perfectly reasonable solution to the situation. Just having her turn around one day and saying, "You know, I think I'll be gay now, for fanservice," would have screwed with SoD (except when it's a porn. Because porn). Well, it would be okay except that Amy had a specific aversion to that kind of brainmodding due to what happened with Vicky.

What amazes me is that Taylor was able to maintain heterosexuality while being constantly exposed to Amy's love and desire beaming directly to her neurotransmitters and hormones.

Until Amelia managed to break through on their wedding night that was hardest 0 on the Kinsey scale, ever.:p

EDIT:

It just occured to me but why couldn't Taylia make copies of the Administrator and Shaper shards to attach to the backup clones? She is clearly capable of making replacement shards.

Maybe they bought into the whole continuity of consciousness thing too?
