General chat thread

....I hope you are exaggerating for comedy's sake.
If anything, I toned it down because I feared going into the real dirt would sound too much like an actual third world dictatorship to be believable.

Like how it's pretty much impossible to get a job in road or other state construction projects without paying a bribe.

And a whole lot of [Rule 8] shit.

I like that video of some dude in Chicago at night where you hear all the fireworks. Not even a special day but so many showing how happy they are.

No fireworks needed!

Would you elaborate on this?
It's... just a general rule.

"Animals have blood" except arthropods.

"Animals have gills (lungs, incidentally, are a specialized form of gill)" except arthropods.

"Animals have an immune system" except arthropods. Usually.

"Animals share significant characteristics with other animals within their own phylum"- except fucking arthropods.

Kinda like that saying 'there is, taxonomically, no such thing as a fish' only taken up a hundredfold. Arthopods are basically the first multicellular animals on Earth, and among the fastest breeders, meaning they've had hundreds of times over more of that 'mutation, natural selection' shit going on than anything else that reproduces sexually.

And even that's not entirely true, given the shit that the evolution has done to the eusocial insects...

And, ultimately, arthropods are the majority of animal life on earth- they're the norm, and all the fish, amphibians, mammals, and birds are collectively little more than a vocal minority.

As such, biologists have just sort of given up on bugs when talking generally about animal life and kinda treat them the way they treat plants and fungi- fundamentally their own kingdom of life that superficially resembles another kingdom.

Who here feels uncomfortable when people make jokes about anal probing?

More like insensitive to people who actually went through an abduction.
Since the 1950's thousands of people have claimed that they've been abducted by extraterrestrial/inter dimensional beings most notably Betty and Barney Hill, Travis Walton, and Whitley Strieber.
I mean, for the sake of argument, if anal probing aliens did exist, jokes made at their victim's expense would be pretty mean. Being viewed as, and being made fun of for, being a fake looking for attention, or delusional if you're generous, when you're honestly reporting your lived experience, would suck. So, if you believe in anal probing aliens, yes, it makes sense to be uncomfortable when you hear people joke about it.

I don't believe in alien abductions, and think those that report to have gone through them to be delusional or liars, so I'm perfectly comfortable with those kinda jokes (not that I comes across them that often).

Betty Hill appears to genuinely be unwell, Travis Walton seems like he wandered off high or drunk on the job, and the last guy is straight up lying to sell books. Note that Streiber also apparently lied about witnessing the shooting at the University of Texas in 1966.

Worth noting that a good portion of those 'alien probing' events are... probably sexual assault of a purely terrestrial nature.

Date rape drugs are not a recent invention, and most of them come with at least some hallucinogenic and/or memory altering properties. Especially when mixed with alcohol... but, just about any drug interacts harshly with alcohol.

Then, there's always schizophrenia, sleep paralysis, and 'stranger in the mirror' to explain the non-intoxicated... and the possibility of childhood sexual abuse trauma coming out in those nightmares.

As to actually being abducted by aliens? Heh. No. Anything with the capacity to travel a hundred or more lightyears (that's the bare minimum distance away from us an industrial or beyond species would have to be for us to not currently have the ability to detect the activities of their world) has no reason to anal probe anyone. And if they did abduct people, no reason to send them back.

First: anyone attempting such a diagnosis over the internet would be even crazier than people believing in aliens. Or at least dumber. Or both. There is always both. If you want a proper diagnosis, consult a proper therapist for proper examination.

Second: no, believing in alien abduction doesn't make one insane. It makes one wrong, operating on flawed assumptions, incomplete evidence, and a lack of proper understanding of the evidence one has. Also indicates quite a bit of gullibility and/or lack of critical thinking.

But none of that is 'insanity'. Trust me, if 'stupid' was a mental illness, we'd all need to be locked up. You, me, the whole damn species.

All you are? Is uneducated on the topic of the nearly limitless potential for the human brain to fuck with itself.

Unless that's what they want us to think!!!

But seriously, I wouldn't be surprised if anal probing - if, somehow, it is a thing - is the alien equivalent of cow tipping.

Oh, you mean 'fictitious'?

Because cow tipping is an urban myth. Not even a legend, a myth. And emphasis on 'urban'- the 'rural' folk know better.

Anyone who's ever spent even a single day working on a (cow) farm can tell you why in about 10 seconds:

As a person with autism, it's hard for me to tell whats true and what's not. Also with autism comes a massive amount of empathy and when I hear stories of people who seem liked they've been through a traumatic experience I can't help but emphasize with them even if it's as outlandish as alien abduction, haunting, Bigfoot encounters or other paranormal phenomenon.

Be that as it may, humans pushing over sleeping cows for a laugh wouldn't be that ridiculous of a claim if it were possible. Aliens probing for lols could make sense if they are similar to humans in that way.

I'm unsure how autism relates to empathy, didn't think it did, but not being sure what's true or not is part of the human condition.

Huh. Learn something every day.

.....you guys have weird myths. Cow tipping, really?

I mean, to be fair, you don't have to believe someone (or at least don't have to believe they're correct) in order to empathize with someone.

I have nothing but sympathy for people with such diseases as schizophrenia or Alzheimer's. Those are horrific diseases, and nothing quite terrifies me like the idea of my brain breaking down while I'm in it.

But at the same time, it's easier to help people when you concern yourself with what their real problem is, rather than what they think their problem is.

Also: we've known what Bigfoot encounters are, and have for a long time. Excluding those who are either lying or hallucinating...

That, right there, is "bigfoot". Those are black bears: pretty small, wouldn't ever mistake it for a missing link, but could probably mistake it for a primate if you're not educated on the topic.

Brown bears, on the other hand...

Tell me this wouldn't look like the 'missing link' if you shaved it down like the above...

... Personally, I'd be more terrified of the truth than the fiction in this case. Great apes, historically, aren't particularly aggressive with humans. Long as you don't threaten their children or piss off the males during rut, you don't have much to fear. Should sasquatch be some sort of branch between human and ape, he'd probably be pretty calm around us.

Diseased bears, on the other hand... a brown bear is far more physically powerful than any ape, and disease can cause an animal to behave in all sorts of unpredictable and likely violent ways.

Chill monkey man... or dangerously unhinged bear. Which sounds safer to you?

Chupacabras originated from a lady in Puerto Rico who believed the events of the movie Species were happening in real life. Reports since then are just animals with mange. Dogs, coyotes, even racoons.

Stuff like Mothman or the Flatwoods monster is a combination of people seeing owls (some species even have red eyeshine) and the generally shitty ability of people to tell how large something is, especially at night.

Edit: For a good example: https://simple.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mothman

The barred owl down the page? I can one hundred percent believe someone mistook one of those for something else with their eyeshine. The brain is an idiot and fills in the gaps of things you don't get a good look at with whatever it wants.

Another thing about owls that nobody really realizes... they fly in absolute silence.

Yeah, it's common enough knowledge, but unless you've experienced it for yourself, it's impossible to understand how disconcerting that is.

I got buzzed by one of the local barn owls. So close I felt the breeze. Heard absolutely nothing. Lemme tell you, that got the adrenaline pumping.

Of course, my neighborhood is surrounded on all sides by forest, so I've grown accustomed to the wildlife and so it was only disconcerting to me... but even I was a little freaked out at first. Do that shit to someone who's lived in the city his whole life and I imagine it'd be more than 'a little'.

The thing about alien abduction experiences is that whether or not you believe in aliens or whatever that allegedly took these people and did things to them is fairly irrelevant. A lot of these people seem to be pretty traumatized from something, whether that be something that happened to them that the trauma isn't letting them remember properly, some kind of neurological event, or even strange creatures molesting them.

So for the people who are really going through some shit? They should be treated with compassion and helped in whatever ways are possible to deal with and hopefully move past/cope with/live with their trauma.

People trying to cash in on the subculture should be revealed as fakes and vilified, as is appropriate.

Do I personally think that aliens are doing this kind of shit? No, no I do not.

Aliens are real, probably, maybe, but they certainly aren't on Earth fingerbanging farmers.

I don't have any basis for this objective fact, other than I don't like the thought of aliens coming to earth and not telling me about it.

Also probing others without consent is gay, and if the aliens are gay then that means I can't fuck them.

It would be so disappointing if it turned out that aliens were, in fact, molesting people for fun on Earth like that.

<sigh> Fact is, I'd be unsurprised if it turned out that alien life were much like that described in The Three Body Problem.
