Interest Check & Idea Thread

Not sure where to post this.

But I was wondering what is a quest. What is it? How does it function?
Its a story where at certain points one or more decisions are offered to the readers (usually, but not always, with write-in answers allowed). The thread discusses and votes on a course of action, which is how the story proceeds.

Such choices can be anything from whether the protagonist answers "yes" or "no" to a question to a whole turn's worth of moves in a civilization-building strategy game.

A quest is a type of story where each chapter ends with a series of options, and the people in the thread reading the quest vote on which option for the character to do.

You vote using these [square brackets] and you put an X in the middle to signify your choice.

[ ] Go Left
[ ] Go Right
[X] Go forwards
[ ] Go backwards.

See?

Considering how open world the game of Kenshi is with various chargen choices, would it make a fun bleak quest?

I'd say so, yeah. Kenshi is a terrible place to live, filled with equally terrible people. Carve out a slice of paradise in the wasteland? Or be just as bad?
Sounds great and when it's a game that expressly has players start from the bottom that bad ends are guaranteed from day one, the quest can always go back to another chargen choice in a world of slavers, killer robots that love to wear human skin and the theocratic xenophobic human nation it's going to be just great.

I've been considering running an Oban: Star Racers quest. Now, understandably, QQ isn't... the most ideal place to run a non-NSFW quest, but i figured it might be interesting to run three separate divisions of the tournament, hosted one each on SB, SV, and QQ, each running parallel with the possibility of cross-forum competition if you each make it to Oban itself.

As an interest check, would people prefer something more mechanically complex, or mechanically light? Naturally, there'll be some customization, such as your vehicle, either way. I'd also be running it far in the past or the future, since Humans are too plain white bread when considering what the Oban 'verse has available. I'm willing to take race-concept suggestions before the first post goes up, if enough interest is shown to be worth attempting the quest here.

maybe this is the wrong place, but would anyone be interested in some sort of quest about grave robbers, badly-named italian servant girls, and semi-surrealist omnibenevolent maids? possibly also a dash of slang i make up as i go along. i've never really done a quest before, so if i do go ahead with this, expect very low quality.

the basic summary is this:

Your name is Maria Vespucci, and you are a servant girl in the manor of one Lady Benevento, an eccentric noblewoman. Your official duties involve keeping the rooms clean, and tending to the many guests who come to visit the manor. In practice, however, the Lady has you running a wide variety of odd jobs and small investigations to indulge her curiosity. You've been thinking of quitting your job, but you're unsure what other employment you could find on short notice with your very limited skill set. The Lady Benevento is clearly kenned, too, so upsetting her by quitting may be unwise. Her requests have been growing increasingly erratic, however, and have been putting you in very close proximity to the Resurrection-Men's part of the city, so your hand may be forced very soon.

idk. not sure where i'd go with this. still, curious if anyone would be interested.

EDIT as of 2023: This went nowhere. Onto a different project!

Pass the popcorn.

And well, it's probably fine. After all, it'd make for a good try at running a quest.

I wanted to ask, has anyone run a multiplayer quest?

Like as in the "players" are different sites, and two quests running in the same continuity, concurrently?

Maybe you could even pit them against each other?

Hell you could take this concept another step further and have a third quest on another site where the questers act as QM for the other two quests

Someone did. Then they cheated on the voting results because they didn't like the result. Don't remember what happened afterwards.

People have before. The problem I've had with it is that when the results on the other site are drastically different than the site you're reading it on, it feels very random. There's a lot less site overlap than you think.

Hm. Random idea: "I Got Isekai'd But My Cheat Power Is Just Streaming Bribes And All My Followers Are Perverts!"

Instead of regular 1-1 voting, the players offer the character money/XP to go with their request/suggestion- and they can see the 'chat' as they go. Bit of bookkeeping on the QM's part to keep track of each poster's money, possibly reset after a (long) in-game time, maybe a month. Maybe bonuses for Omake and such.

But the final choice to accept or deny a request or suggestion is up to the character. You can raise or pool the pay to tempt them, but if it's not their bag they may still refuse. At the same time, they can take multiple requests, so you might get both 'masturbate for the camera' and 'check out the spaceport' at the same time.

And by offering suggestions they'll take, you boost their XP/money so they grow in power and can handle greater quests.

Possibly in a CoC/TiTS setting, sort of.

Basically Lewd Streaming Quest.

Thoughts?

It sounds ok in theory, but when you think of details, it sounds like a nightmare. What's the cap people can 'donate'? What prevents people from just donating that every vote? What if every player donates their cap every update, etc.

... How do you "pay" the character?

I'd probably set up every poster with X amount (100? 10k? Depends on the in-game economy I go with, what leveling system, etc.) and keep track of the names on a spreadsheet. I thought of using post counts, but that'd be a bit unfair to newer people- though definitely make sure to not let completely new accounts vote. I expect people to occasionally call in friends that aren't interested in the thread, but calling people they know from elsewhere I'd draw the line- and of course avoiding people thinking they can sockpuppet to get more voting power.

Part of why I was thinking a whole 'in-game' month, so they have to somewhat ration their shit or run out completely- either letting other players control the votes or leaving the character high-and-dry until the rollover.

And there's no guarantee of the character accepting, either, so they might not lose anything.

Bookkeeping may indeed be a pain, yes, as I said.

EDIT: ...Dangit XF2, how'd I end up in the SFW thread?

Would anybody theoretically be interested in an Anakin Skywalker quest?

I've been toying with the idea of a Research Quest where players vote on backers, location, and chargen to make a researcher that's gradually going to move into Sci-Fi/Fantasy subjects.

Like, Mafia backers, small lab in the American wilderness, and researching pseudoscience topics until hitting on Magic-like esoteric energy.

Notable features would be every named character having a unique stat, and random competencies that would let them open new avenues of research.

Say,

Sarah Ackers
Phys 3
Will 1
Sci 1
Paranoia 4

Biometrics
Firearms
Physical Security

So Sarah would be bad for normal research, with a Science of 1, but great for leading specific projects related to securing the base, and is loyal with a low Will, and a physical instrument with a Phys of 3.

Paranoia 4 would give access to projects that let her investigate people and uncover conspiracies, or just give her advantage on rolls relating to suspicion and securing things.

Later on we might take advantage of her low Will, and therefore a low chance of rebellion, and augment her with a magical third eye and bionic limbs, plus give her access to the Whispers stat, and suddenly she's hearing the soul of the world whisper conspiracies into her ear.
