How about a Christmas themed Quest? Something like playing the Spirit of Christmas and it is your Job to go to the most unlucky People in fiction and fulfil their wishes.. with MAGIC!!!

Our first person would be Sakura Matou when she was in her pool of happiness worms.
Then go from there.
Homura is also a perfectly valid choice. Fuck QB.
Edit: And also the VA for that one sad dinosaur in The Land Before Time.

Modern Magic Quest

"Wake up."

The voice is kind. The kick to the ribs is not.

"Yes, yes, I'm sure that was quite surprising, but now that you're both awake and Awake, it's time for you to listen."

The body of the speaker doesn't match the voice at all. Where one is a low pleasant baritone suitable for soft rock, the other is a large hulking thing seemingly crafted from shadows. What little of it's face is visible is all rust colored teeth.

It's also standing next to your bed.

Obviously, this is a dream. No, a nightmare, the kind where you're supposed to run from the scary monster.

"Ah, none of that."

Or it could be the kind of nightmare where the shadow monster can teleport. Why does your subconscious hate you?

"Not a dream, child, and you needn't worry too much," and then, just for a second, the voice matches the body. "As long as you Listen."

Paying attention now.

"Good," that is an incredibly creepy smile. "First, I'm here to congratulate you."

Well, that's nice of it. Sort of. Kind of have to wonder what you did that warranted a celebratory visit from this guy, if only so you can never do it again.

"What you've done is gained power," now wondering if this thing is a mind reader. The fact that its smile grows even wider as that thought finishes is not comforting, "and in the process woken up to our little moonlit world."

"Second, I'm going to give you a little help realizing what you can do now, and leave you with a list of a few others living nearby who know about this sort of thing." A sharpened finger points to a piece of paper on the bed stand that wasn't there when you went to sleep.

"Some are nice people, they might even help you. Others, not so much," and now that shadowy hand full of cruel looking edges is resting on your shoulder in what an oblivious soul might mistake for a comforting gesture. "I believe you have a neighbor not a few miles from here who's trying to take over the city by force."

"And lastly, of course, is to give the standard little warning," and suddenly all you can see is rotting teeth. "The organization I belong to doesn't want any of this sort of thing to become public, and it has ways of keeping it secret."

"We don't care who you kill, what you do, or what kind of mess you make, so long as you don't show off in a way that can't be kept quiet. If we have to silence you, then the thing that will find you will make me look like a pleasant dream."

So, what can you do that got this thing's bosses to send him to talk to you?

( ) Magic is all in the mind.

Start with a weak mind power. This could be limited precognition, empathy, truth reading, some form of clairvoyance, or many other things. Whatever it is, it certainly gives you more to think about.

- Easier to improve or learn mind magics.

( ) Power flows through the body.

You've just become a little stronger, or maybe you heal a little faster. Perhaps you're simply tougher than you used to be. If the body is a temple, then it seems yours just got a blessing.

- Easier to punch people real good.

( ) The world around you is filled with potential.

Starting small fires, freezing a glass of water, or throwing around something a little bit stronger than a static shock. It's all about changing anything you look at.

- Ranged stuff comes easier.
- Highest starting power.
- Hardest to keep secret.
- Lowest starting magic resistance.

( ) There is no such thing as magic.

You are the void. No one is going to be throwing any fireballs at you if you have anything to say about it. If you try hard enough, maybe you can make Mr. Shadow disappear. What could possibly be more important than never seeing this guy again?

- Counterspelling comes naturally.
- Extremely high starting magic resistance.
- Difficulty learning to make your magic actually do stuff.

( ) Think of something else, this one is kind of stupid.

[X] Power flows through the body.
Is what I would like to go with but due to moonlit world shenanigans...
[X] Jedi Mind Tricks.

[X] Magic is in Everyone

- Your Magic comes from these around you. From their thoughts, their opinions and their believes. Connecting to others can give you new powers as different as sky and earth.
- Weak Inherent Magic
- High Variety of Capabilities
- Great Potential
- Average Magic Resistance
- Hard to Hold Secret for Obvious Reasons.

Some Persona, some To aru Majutsu got into this idea, something else? This sounds pretty cool anyway. Hope People will take this idea.

@Kinglugia: I think the Body is mostly physical stuff, if you want Jedi Mind Trick, I think Mental would be more likely to get the right effects. I also wonder whetther this is Nasuverse, Bakemonogatari or something else. (Or a mix of the two or more.)

Pretty sure he knows that.
As far as I understood it, he said he would like to take Body, but won't because stuff like Jedi Mind tricks are necessary to keep things secret.

Personally, I think that, while Body is not very suited to covering things up, it's also rather subtle.
Unless you get into an obviously superpowered fistfight in the middle of the street or start pulling Alucard level regeneration, chances are the things you do can be explained away by people not seeing things right, the video being faked and stuff like that.

Mission_to_Mars.jpg

The poster had been worn by weather and stained by the constant, choking smog that filled the city. Your eyes traced it's familiar lines one final time before you slowly take it down- One pin after another clattering to the floor as you take it off the wall.

You've looked this poster over every day for the past ten years. When you woke up in the morning, it was the first thing to reach your eyes. When you went to bed at night, it was the last sight before you drifted off to sleep.

The Terraforming Projects began a hundred years ago, around the middle of the 21st century, with a bang- Quite literally, as the opening phase was made possible by an unpredicted rogue planetoid made up mostly of ice and frozen oxygen that was redirected into a collision with the red planet. It was 2163 when the CNSA probes reported that the atmosphere was stable enough to begin seeding Mars with life in the form of algea and microorganisms, and another three years before the government had begun the process of weeding out individuals for a colony.

You were still somewhat surprised that you'd made the cut, actually- Competition for one of the handful of positions was fierce. You understand that things were different in the US, where anyone with enough money to pay the ticket could take the year-long voyage to their own colony- But China was only willing to send the best of their people to the new world. You could understand the theory- They didn't want poor returns on their investment, after all, and lazy dullards were poor workers at the best of times.

Still... You feel the blood rushing through your veins, and realize you've been staring at the poster for nearly ten minutes now. You roll it up carefully and stow it in your bag, along with the other 9.98 Kilograms of your alloted carry-on cargo. Actually, it was far less due to the weight of your backpack, but the heavy leather was strong and had served you well through your whole life- You weren't willing to risk not finding another bag so good on the end of your trip. It wasn't like you needed more than a couple outfits anyway.

"Hey, hurry up!" You turn and see your roommate at the door. "The bus is here! If you don't hurry, they'll leave without us!"

That was probably an exaggeration, but then again... You dash out, along with your roommate.

In the end, you make it to the shuttle on time, although the old bus-driver grumbles about the quality of today's youth through the entire ride. Now all you have to do is fill out a few final pieces of paperwork...

The world is a wondrous place. It is big. It is wide.

There are those on the other Earth who say that your world is epic and awesome in its scope. You don't think it is. It is in the end, after all, everything you have ever known. You suspect that it is Earth Aleph that is smaller and less impressive for the lack of the superheroes and supervillains that run around in your world.

And yet, that other Earth is quiet and does not sit upon the precipice of doom and disaster.

In any event, you are a normal high school student. Or you will be as soon as you get to school.

The date is August the thirty first, two thousand nine. The time is six am, monday morning, and you're all dressed up and having breakfast at home with your family. The first day of high school is important, as it would set the tone of the next few years.

Your father is busy reading his newspaper on the business report of the fallout of the Endbringer attack on Madison. You shiver at the cold remind that those things could bring disaster on anyone every few months.

Your mother is busy with feeding your younger sister.

You settle for teasing her with a fruit as you work on your cereal.

You are Madison Clements, age fourteen, and you've got your whole life ahead of you.

What stories will they tell of you?

I agree with fallenblades this is the only path.

It is the duty of angels, of the soldiers and servitors of heaven, to patrol through the infinite world made by the Lord and watch for infernal influence. This applies to even those less than suited to the role of watchful wandering.

Those like yourself.

Really, you had gone into things with the very best intentions and if you're mind had wandered a little during the briefing then who could blame you? It'd had been eight hours long after all and a few details might have failed to stick in your mind.

When passing through an obscure world, one whose future and themes rang with death and suffering in ways which were unfortunately not born of infernal influence, you had heard a soul crying out for succor. You might not have been the most compassionate angel in the Infinite Heavens, but you through that just a little help might do the trick.

You're not sure how she got in there but she must have had a horrible time if a lock getting jammed was almost the last straw. A few murmured words of comfort went unheard, unsurprisingly as you'd failed that class in Academy, and a few nudges of nearby students only caused a little hesitation.

Weird, but maybe you shouldn't have let it frustrate you quite so much that you tried to physically intervene. You didn't have a key for the lock, something which probably inside with the poor trapped girl, but fortunately enough you had been issues with an alternative.

After all it was a rare lock which could stand up to a few feet of flaming steel... Unfortunately, as it turned out, maybe you should have used more precision and less enthusiasm when hacking at the stubborn thing.

A sizzle and scream from inside the locker warned you that your use of the blade might have overshot the mark. Not wanting to make things worse you headed off, hoping that this little mistake would go overlooked.

It didn't.

Oh, all the saints fucked and spanked, you had really messed up this time to the point that nobody could quite believe how badly you'd done. But how were you to guess that a girl trapped in a high school locker was a key to saving that world? Or that such an important person wouild die from just a few accidental bisections with a celestial weapon?

Your superiors were definitely unhappy about matters but death was one thing they couldn't casually overturn. Not without an obnoxious ammount of paperwork which wouldn't be finished for another six or seven years. In the meantime someone, and when this was said you got a remarkable number of glares from your Bosses, would have to take over the life and role of the girl until everything could be sorted.

A few Songs would ensure that you seemed to fit the role and, after sneaking a look at the Book of Destiny, they knew that the girl was going to have gained bug powers (from being trapped in a small space with lots of ick and creepy crawlies, as it turned out) when she got out of the locker.

In that locker is where you ended up now.

It was cramped, more so because you had a rather larger body than that Hebert girl had, and stank to high heaven. You were wishing, for the seventeenth time, that she'd had the taste to get bitten by a radioactive spider or something if she wanted bug powers and wondering when those would kick in when two things occured to you.

First was that everyone had been so rushed to get you in place, having only a few hours before she was supposed to be discovered, that they never had briefed you on what she was meant to do. You could probably follow the urges of the role, a little packet of instincts and knowledge shoved into the back of your mind, so hopefully that would do the trick.

The second, and more important to your mind, is that your Bosses never blocked off your Celestial abilities and skills. Obviously that meant that you were allowed to use them because, really, everyone is supposed to take after the Big Boss and be all infallable.

In the darkness of the locker you pulled the hilt of your flaming sword out of Nowhere and grinned widely.

Maybe being Taylor Hebert wouldn't be so punising an assignment after all?

What will you do?

[_] Use standard issue sword : No waiting for you. After all, it'd been already proven to cut through this door...

[_] Yell for help : Isn't that what a trapped girl is supposed to do? You think?

It's Worm. I don't really care about Worm.

The angelic angle is interesting, in the same way as forcefully dragging the setting of the world to a different genre would be.

There's a turn of phrase.

"Death is as light as a feather, duty is heavier than a mountain."

If you're not familiar with it, it's a Japanese saying.

It basically means that you shouldn't take the easy way out, while also saying that you should take the easy way out.

Better to have died serving your lord, then to live with the eternal dishonor of having betrayed him.

In ye olde Japan, I'm sure it was very popular. Or maybe not. A lot of that stuff you hear about the 'Honorable Ways of Bushido' nowadays was a fabrication of world war two Japan's propaganda machine.

The reason I'm bringing this up, is because it's hilariously ironic.

The age of the Samurai died a long time ago, and while you can certainly say what you want about equality, people willing to die for their beliefs, and the many welfare programs offered by the governments of the world to help the less fortunate, most people don't buy too hard into personal honor.

Politicians tend to be liars, even when they wish otherwise. Corporations don't trust individual people. And of course, general faith in one's fellow man tends to be disappointed far more often than not.

And yet.

In this modern world of lies and deceit, I find myself honor bound with the masters of the arts of deception and trickery.

Ninja, while an intriguing pop culture icon, are believed to be fictional by the masses.

This is one of those things that while technically true, is actually a lie.

The crazy man in the black pajamas who runs around screaming is dead.

The gentleman down the street who talks softly, and walks with a cane is still alive. The discreet messenger is aware of the contents in their parcels. The black silenced pistol lurking in the shadows has a target. The hidden blade lingers in a disguise of scented silk.

Ninja didn't die. They simply did what any human would do when faced with adversity.

Adapt.

But, for one reason or another, these people who walk in shadows have always kept a code of honor. Discretion. Secrecy. Loyalty.

And they value such things in others.

So, when a person with a certain set of wandering eyes catches sight of them, and says nothing, even with a reward dangled beneath their nose and the threat of violence hanging in the air...

They notice.

And are appreciative.

Well, there's more to the story than that.

Once just doesn't end up in my position because someone's "Appreciative."

But that strange winter's eve, is where it all began.

It's a tale of blood, magic, intrigue, honor, beautiful women, and one very, very tricky fox.

Interested... ?

Well, that ninja Story sounds most certainly interesting.

Though it is a bit inaccurate to say that the guy in black pajamas that screams is dead, I think there are still japanese theaters who have such characters. Though such a figure never existed in the first place of course. The historical Shinobi is after all very different from that popculure thing. Though I hope your character turns out to be wrong and Samurai are also still alive somewhere, though they don't necessarily have to be honorable.... well actually they have to, just not in the way we modern People would think of honor.

Your name is Jack.. John... Jacob? You don't know. It doesn't matter. All that matters is that you are a GENIUS. And those fools robbed you. FOOLISH FOOLS. They stole all of your designs. ALL of them.

Well not quite.

They stole your masterpieces. You still have your lesser work. Sevitor bots meant for labor mostly.

You may not have much, but you are a genius.

And they didn't take that. You can continue to think and build. All you need is time. They'll forget about the man they stole from.

And when they do.

You'll show them. You'll show them all.

But first you need to sleep. You've been up for who knows how long.

You dream of

[] Armies of mechanical men

[] Making a new masterpiece better then all of the others.

[] Converting worthless people into your new army.

[] Supersoldiers

[] Magitek weaponry.

[] Undead roaming ever consuming.

[] Mechanical Self augmentation
