On a Pale Horse (Umamusume/Youjo Senki)

Tanya Shirogane's part of the Golden Generation eh? So from 1997 as two year old newcomers to 2000 at most, hmmmmmmm. Will be interesting to see what races she'll win. (Stay Gold started at December 1996 and ended his career at December 2001)

Image Shirogane performs better at European Races as the ground is familiar to her. Tanya winning the l'Arc out of spite to the François and the trouble they cause her.

"Kiiing!" A cheerful voice sounded through the classroom, followed shortly by its origin, a small umumusume with pink hair, of all things, and unexpectedly shorter than Shirogane. "I found you!"

"Haru? But you're supposed to be in a different classroom…"

"Eeeh?!" the small uma rubbed her fists against her temples, her face the picture of confusion. "But we're roommates! I thought that meant we were supposed to be in the same room!"

"In the dormitory, Haru-chan!" King Halo sighed, pinching the bridge of her nose. "The classroom you're supposed to go to is based on your schedule."
Whoever decided to put King with Haru must be prescient. Considering KH's irl career, Haru must be a source of great encouragement until the final day.

King Halo looked flabbergasted for a moment, before shaking her head slightly and walking over to her roommate, pulling the shorter girl's schedule out of her pack and explaining it to her.
King Halo start as the mom figure begins. Taking care of Haru must be a literally test run of the experience and learning to deal with frustrating situations.

"Are those common in Japan?" And that was Grass Wonder, looking like she was missing context and inordinately unhappy about it.

"I was not aware street racing was that prevalent a phenomenon," Shirogane admitted. Another thing to look into. "I was running on the road because I was running food deliveries for my family's restaurant."
Grass being uber weeb and wanting to consume all Japanese traditions and customs even thought she's American. Though, I think Jungle Pocket in the movie hinted that they were doing some street running I think, before she got inspired and moved to actual JRA races.

"Are you alright, Matikanefukukitaru-san?" Dober asked, hurriedly making her way over to the fallen uma.

"Why have you forsaken me, Shiroaki?!" Matikanefukukitaru cried, not bothering to get up from her prone position. "Fortune was supposed to be in my favor today!"

Was her name supposed to be two names? Ah…eighteen characters. Another oddity in this world.
Her name is supposed to be the first syllable of each word in a phrase/sentence I think.

Now if only Stay Gold would stop staring at her.
Stay Gold has a thing for small horse if I remember.

"Wah!" Tsurumaru jumped in the air, making Shirogane duck out of the way of a flailing limb. "Where did you come from?!"

"...Behind you." What exactly was she supposed to say to that?

"I didn't hear you at all?!"
I wonder if that would be a quirk of her irl counterpart. Extremely quiet and can sneak up on you.

Shirogane judged her own odds of achieving the so-called Triple Crown as low, if not minimal. She could tell her classmates were largely faster than her, and with at least a year's worth of conditioning, she doubted they would tire themselves out on just a medium race by the time of their classic year. Perhaps the Kikuka Sho could be within her grasp, with the longer race giving her an edge.
Gonna give Seiun Sky a run for her money. Her little trick at the Kikuka Sho irl might not work as well on Shiro. I wonder if Hana might run her in Long races.

"Man, this class is pretty strong," Tsuyoshi-san mumbled under her breath. "What would prez do?"
Ah Tsuyoshi, a body fit for running but not healthy enough to go the distance.

Even clearly tired, her chestnut classmate's closing speed was still formidable, so Shirogane side-stepped into her path, cutting off her passing lane.
I wonder if some warhorse heritage gives her body special characteristics. I assume the hypothetical irl horse would have a warhorse and a race horse parent. Warhorse are built for endurance and the race horse built for speed.

Stamina sparks and speed sparks with the unique WAR spark that gives guts and stamina instead of the normal URA FINALE spark

Sky was in her way, but had not fully sealed off the inner rail, so she pushed forwards, accelerating into the turn.

"Wha–?!"

A moment later Shirogane was past Seiun Sky and in the lead for the first time today, pushing herself back up to her top speed as she made it back onto the returning straight.
Some one is eventually going to give her a grim reaper costume as a joke only for her to wear it during a Halloween themed race.

Shirogane doesn't seem to be pushing herself that much. It seems that she could treat even medium-distance tracks as sprints, going all-out right out of the gate, but she doesn't even experiment with that. We see that she still isn't nearly as tired out as her peers, despite running 15 races in a row. I don't know if she's planning to save that strategy for her debut race, or is so locked into the conventional strategy of pacing herself for a final sprint at the end, but I want to see her try to exploit her monstrous stamina.

Maybe her trainer can take a weekend and do an endurance run test until Shirogane can't run anymore.

Teio is from a earlier generation though. Her Classic run was in 91 while the Golden Generation was in 98.
The anime portrays Teio in the same year and races as the Golden Generation

It's just a thing like how Rudolf has been school president for 40+ years and the eternal 17 high school student that is the fossil known as Maruzensky

Just roll with it. Even cygames went 'dont think about it' when people brought it up

One of them was apparently Mejiro Dober's sister, Mejiro Bright, though oddly enough they did not refer to each other as twins, despite being in the same year, while the second one was an uma with reddish-brown hair and green ear socks named Silence Suzuka. Neither of them seemed to notice the newcomer to the class, the former sitting next to her sister, while the latter sat by the window and stared out wistfully.
Suzuka unconsciously emulating typical anime highschool protagonist. Truly, the most protagonist Uma of her generation.

Also, would be a fun talk when Shiro realizes that Dober and Bright while in the same clan, are not sisters (due to not having the same dam). Probably gonna weird out Shiro a bit when she hears how the other Mejiro girls are related to one another.

While time is wishy washy, the game and other spinoff materials actually do try to line up their events with irl events. The main anime was the only one that deviates that (e.g. Pasa running in the Derby, Spe and Grass tied, Teio and McQueen era happening after Golden gen even tho they are the gen after Oguri).

It's why I generally prefer following the game or spinoff (CinGrey and StarBlo) timeline since they are more consistent than the main anime.

Each hoofbeat as cannon fire, and the water that pools upon the track as bullets. War is hell, and where the Pale Rider walks, hell follows.
I can imagine that one. As she waits at the start of a race, maybe faint medieval banners (music?) are present then during the race the sound of swords clashing and arrow-fire along with the occasional cannon occurs and when things get more serious it shifts to a more napoleonic setting with the sound of musket-fire and cannons before a final shift to the world-wars.

She feels like she's specced for late surger or end closer. Take it slow and easy and then go fast.
That would require her to change her style. So far she has taken to riding the slipstream of the pace setter before cutting tight on the final curve and then outright body blocking those trying to sprint past on the final stretch.

Kind of hard to body block if you aren't already at the lead pack. Plus, with her stamina, Shirogane shouldn't have much issue keeping up with the frontrunners or pacer chasers on longer races.

Shirogane's genetics favor sustained speed rather than the explosive sprint that would favor end closer or late surger.

So I'm wondering, how do umas typically view their race names? Given how they're normally the reincarnation of like-named race horses, I get the feeling that they view their names as naturally part of themselves, that it's truly their name. If so, Shiro's going to be a bit different, since she only took a new name since it was required. It's not the worst name and fits with her decently, but I don't see her naturally responding to the name like other umas.

So pace chaser?

My impression was late surger or end closer when I read her racing style.

Honestly, the only style that can work for her right now is Great Escape. She basically doesn't have a spurt, meaning she can't pass people after wearing them down. She needs to put as much distance between her and the others as she can in order to reduce how much the others can overtake with their own spurts.

That moment when Air Groove realizes the reason Shirogane has been so stiff is she's trying to not laugh Rudolph's jokes.

MOOD DOWN.
The person who would really mood crash if that happen would be Narita Brian. Air Groove gets mood down for missing the joke more than the actual joke itself.

Guess the thread name is legit huh. I imagine that will scare the hell out of most UMA...
So, Shirogane gets into the zone and suddenly all the other racers start freaking out as they hear artillery fire?
Potentially. It would make her races rather strange to watch from the stands because there will be regularly runners around freaking out for no apparent reason. It might take some time for people to really clue in that it has something to do with her, since for the most part, Shirogane isn't going to do anything too eye-catching by herself.

Could potentially end up with her being viewed as a sort of bad luck charm, though gamblers might like her because it makes races very unpredictable.

Is Stay Gold staring at Shirogane cause she's a silver uma? Irl Stay Gold have trauma with silver horse right?
Shirogane is a similar coloration to Point Flag, but no, that's not why Stay Gold is curious. There's really no confusing Shirogane with a Mejiro.

but I don't think most horses keep track of other races well enough to move in front of them when they try to move up to pass.
Horses have a very wide range of vision, so they usually don't seem to have much problem keeping track of each other when running. Deliberately trying to block another horse probably is more of trained thing though, since if a horse doesn't like another horse they probably wouldn't run with them.

I liked that Shirogane didn't even flinch when Seiun did her cutting maneuver. She even has an in-world explanation of being used to weaving past cars and pedestrians, and needing to stay calm to keep the food safe.
Something that I'm finding interesting is how Shirogane actively uses her ears to keep track of her surroundings, while nobody else seems to do so. More experienced racers might do it automatically, but at their current level Shirogane seems to be the only one to be doing it on purpose.
Shirogane, for a number of reasons, has a much finer spatial awareness than her classmates, since she has some 3d maneuvering instincts from her past life, and much more experience running in tighter spaces with significantly more hazards to keep track of. This is why she was able to surprise Air Groove and Seiun Sky by cutting close to the rail, because she did it with much less clearance than most runners would be comfortable with. This also means that when trailing another runner she follows them a lot closer than most of them are comfortable with, especially when she lurks in their blind spot.

Does Shiro have any specific running style worth mentioning? I saw Chibi-Reaper mention that Icelandic horse gene, and got curious.
Going through the thread has made me wonder.
Given she only has two legs, she can't exactly do what the Icelandic horse does, but her usual running style is very smooth, as opposed to the bounding motion of some runners. This is part of the reason she is slower, and also part of the reason why she her steps are quieter. On the other hand, Shirogane is much faster on all fours than any of her competitors, not that this is likely to ever be relevant.

She's also a classic case of non-standard body language, because she didn't have another uma in her house to pick up from. There might even be cases where she developed completely unique tells that only make sense to her family and close friends.
She's a bit unnerving from a human standpoint too, since she doesn't blink very often, and doesn't fidget, which is part of why her classmates sometimes seem to forget she's there. It just isn't as bad since the lack of ear and tail movements don't bother a human as much.

Assuming Shirogane/Tanya makes one hell of an impression/top 3 win what sort of nickname/epithet would she likely be saddled with by the sports media, fans and Uma rivals?
She'd probably get called a Silver Collector. Maybe 'The Bird of Calamity' because of the number of crashes that happen during her races.

El Condor Pasa: "And these are my fellow Americans – Kids Lookin' Touchable, and Lookin's Not a Felony!"
Then there's the inseparable pair of friends: The Wife Doesn't Know and My Wife Knows Everything

Though, I think Jungle Pocket in the movie hinted that they were doing some street running I think, before she got inspired and moved to actual JRA races.
She did, but Shirogane wasn't aware of that subculture. Though she might have delivered food to some of those guys before without really realizing what they were up to.

I wonder if that would be a quirk of her irl counterpart. Extremely quiet and can sneak up on you.
I'd imagine the horse equivalent would be a horse that rarely vocalizes and doesn't make many reflexive movements.

Stamina sparks and speed sparks with the unique WAR spark that gives guts and stamina instead of the normal URA FINALE spark
"Is this a glitch? How did I get four stars on this Guts spark?"

Shirogane's Support Card Events: --Mood, +++Guts.

Shirogane's genetics favor sustained speed rather than the explosive sprint that would favor end closer or late surger.
That's true for the most part, until she needs to chase down and kill a target, then she can explode forwards faster than expected.

It seems like most of the umas' names are just their names, unless you want to go with their foal names being their personal names. Shirogane took on a racing name since her birth name is too human sounding.

I thought Waffles was perma no take backsies banned? Welcome back I guess.
I don't remember being banned from QQ. The mods here are generally more hands off.
