On a Pale Horse (Umamusume/Youjo Senki)

Wasn't Tanya's favoured style of fighting sniping people from extreme range? Maybe everyone in front of her feels like they're being watched and hunted?
Her and 203rd's preferred tactics, IIRC, were to engage enemy units at long range early in the battle and then move into medium range while simultaneously using an absurdly high number of decoy spells (at least three per person, which caused 203rd's attrition rate to be VERY low). They only moved into the CQC range when the situation became dire.

Nah - everyone's cheering her brilliant performance... except the one uma in the room who speaks German.

That would be Eishin Flash.😁

You know the outfit Tanya wears in that AMV would be perfect for her in the fic as a secondary alternate Racing outfit.

The military style and epaulette on the left shoulder would be seen as a nod to Symboli Rudolf and the overall look Cape, hat etc and her own expressions would have people wondering if she's the unholy combination of Orfevre and T.M.Opera O.

Expect lots of would be fans to simp for her and desire to be stepped on.

"Waah!" Pasa cried, hands on her knees as she gasped for air. "H-How…you don't…even look tired…Shiro-chan?!"

"I am used to running a lot."

"So am I! Haah…but we've run like twenty laps!"

"It was fifteen, El."

"Fifteen clicks isn't too bad."
You know, if Shiro is as durable as her high stamina, she could run the gauntlet in her Classic year of NHK Mile Cup, Tokyo Yushun (Jap Derby), Yasuda Kinen (Classic) and Takarazu Kinen (Classic). 4 G1s in 2 months. If Oguri can run the Mile Championship followed by Japan Cup, Shiro can go ham with her own schedule. And if she can do Dirt, she gets a bonus Dirt Derby added to the mix.

Bonus if a sudden rain creates "Wet Conditions" which matches more closely to European Turf and we found out she has a Gold skill in "Wet Conditions" which is called "Bad Track Demon" in the game, a +60 to both Speed and Power.

I think she would not win, but consistently getting 2nd place which she rationalises as a regular source of income would be funny. Poor Hana gets blamed for over exerting her but her durability stat being absurd makes her stand out.

I would not be surprised to learn that Shirogane has the strength and endurance to pull a move from Gold Ship's playbook and simply plow though the chewed up and muddy track close to the corner rather than going around like the rest of the Umas.

I don't remember being banned from QQ. The mods here are generally more hands off.
I remember when I reread devil in the ice and noticed that you were banned I panicked a little until I remembered that you also wrote on qq That's actually how I discovered this story when I looked you up.

I just wanted to thank you for writing this wonderful story. Before starting to read this story, I was simply aware of the Umamusume and some of its characters and seen few clips here and there of the anime. With how wonderfully you've brought to "life" these quirky personalities, I'm actually invested in seeing the series and looking into the actual lore behind it all.

As a side note, here are a few Shirogane fanart pictures I made with an AI. I would've loved to make these by hand to give them a more personal touch, but I've neglected my artistic talents for well over a decade now and would not trust myself to have the patience - nor the time to create accurate representation of what I imagined in my mind. I know I'm rather amateurish with this whole AI image generation, but I do hope people will enjoy these.

The worst part about discovering a new fic you really love when it's getting started is that there's such a small backlog to work through. Absolutely loving it so far, really looking forward to more!

The tricky thing is that I get the feeling that Shirogane already anticipates this happening, and her solution is less of proving herself as a racer and more of having set up back-up plans for herself. She'll put in effort, of course, as she's dutiful and she doesn't quit and she wants to make her family happy. If the crisis point happens soon enough, before she's been able to set the full groundwork for her alternate career pathways, she'll have more of a drive to push past her barriers, for now at least. But if she reaches a solid wall in the path as a racer and the only ways forward are to give it her all or give up on it, she'll choose to give it up. It got her far enough, and she's grateful for the opportunities it gave her, but now it's time to move on with her life and find a "real" career.

It'll be interesting to see how Hana and the other racers can get Shiro to commit fully to racing. I kind of wonder if there will be a point where they try to give Shiro an ultimatum with the intent of igniting her drive, only for Shiro to choose to move on to another career, leaving them scrambling to convince her to reconsider before it's too late.

Edit: I kind of see things playing out as a deconstruction of the typical sports movie scene, where the coach motivates the promising yet unmotivated athlete by giving them an ultimatum bluff to shape up or go home. Only unlike in the movies where this gets the athlete to push past their limits, Shiro might just go, "Okay", and pack up, maybe a bit disappointed but having other paths to fall back on.
While I do doubt things will play out this way, I do find it an interesting idea I do kinda want to see play out. Maybe as an omake once there's been a bit more development and we get a better idea of Shirogane's relationship with her team and trainer.

And Rudolph does have her signature Red Skill "Dominator" too
Dominator only works in medium races though. If Shirogane gets a gold red skill it'll probably be a frenzy skill that can cause other racers to rush when she's near them.

Man, now I'm picturing Shirogane during one of the idol segments belting out Los! Los! Los! And traumatizing the entire class
There's no real indication that Tanya would have ever actually sung that song, and thus there's no real way for Shirogane to know of, or recreate that song, since she isn't a musician. That said, her performances are likely to be mildly unsettling at least given her unnerving body language.

Now you make me want to see it's happens lol
Her mother would be very mad at her.

Her and 203rd's preferred tactics, IIRC, were to engage enemy units at long range early in the battle and then move into medium range while simultaneously using an absurdly high number of decoy spells (at least three per person, which caused 203rd's attrition rate to be VERY low). There's no real reason this would influence Shirogane's running style, since both are focused on leveraging her advantages. Perhaps one part that would relate is her ability to move laterally much more efficiently than most of her competitors.

Nah - everyone's cheering her brilliant performance... except the one uma in the room who speaks German.
Eishin Flash would be so confused. Though perhaps hilariously, Shirogane might end up in a mentorship role for Eishin Flash, since she'd be less weirded out by the schedule obsession.

Eventually Shirogane decides her goal is to run at least one in every single G1 race possible. Maybe she tries running in both the Oka Sho and Satsuki Sho, which just sounds like an absolutely insane thing to try.

And if she can do Dirt, she gets a bonus Dirt Derby added to the mix.
Shirogane is able to run on dirt fairly effectively. Not as well as El Condor Pasa, but she'll probably want to run in the Kawasaki Kinen at some point, since it's her home prefecture, and Steady Distance would be racing there too.

Bonus if a sudden rain creates "Wet Conditions" which matches more closely to European Turf and we found out she has a Gold skill in "Wet Conditions" which is called "Bad Track Demon" in the game, a +60 to both Speed and Power.

The worse the conditions are, the better Shirogane performs compared to her competitors.

Poor Hana gets blamed for over exerting her but her durability stat being absurd makes her stand out.
Hana: "This schedule is...far too crowded."
Shirogane: "Most other sports have matches every week, if not multiple per week."
Hana: "You'll need more time to recover."
Shirogane, running body enhancement: "A week seems enough to me."

Year 3 school festival obstacle race sounds like a very relevant moment. Gotta win for the unique skill up!
Shirogane would absolutely smoke most of her classmates at an obstacle course, but probably would get disqualified for finding some kind of circumvention.

A bit lonely with her living alone, but it would be a great hang out place outside of dorms.
At some point she might see some of the more introverted umas hanging out at her apartment with her to get away from their noisy schoolmates. Once they find out she is very good at cooking then there will be more people interested in hanging out.

Now you have me thinking she and Manhattan Cafe meeting and just chilling over their shared love of coffee.

Eh, she can try to propose that, but it would probably get shot down quickly by the other Umas and her trainer. Like, just having 3 races consecutively in-game already got them crying, breaking down, or threatening their trainer. And while I do think Hana is a fraud (putting Suzuka as pace,.smh), she would definitely know the full risk of pushing oneself, to both Shiro health and the potential reputation hit. Especially since a single injury usually is enough to cripple an Uma performance for good.

Also, races have limited number of slots and while Shiro is shaping up as a great strayer, she doesn't seem to do well in shorter races. So, getting into G1 Sprinter races like Sprinter Stakes or even G1 mile races like the Yasuda Kinen doesn't seem like worthwhile investment.

The worse the conditions are, the better Shirogane performs compared to her competitors.
Sounds similar to Digitan capability. She got a pretty big boost when racing in bad condition.

Shirogane would absolutely smoke most of her classmates at an obstacle course, but probably would get disqualified for finding some kind of circumvention.
I dunno about that, considering we have seen events where Uma go through wacky obstacle courses and while the majority fumbled hard, some did really well like Air Groove and Mayano Top Gun. Then there is Gold Ship whose definition of a good time is making wacky obstacle courses (like the recent xmas event).

And just to add, Tracen definition of obstacle course can involve long swing sets over mud pit and climbing sheer cliffs.

At some point she might see some of the more introverted umas hanging out at her apartment with her to get away from their noisy schoolmates. Once they find out she is very good at cooking then there will be more people interested in hanging out.
I can see certain Umas like Ayabe or Air Shakur for a more quiet area to study. Although the problem with Umas and good cooking is that the ones who usually appreciates it, eat quite a lot. I won't be surprised if Shiro won't bother to cook unless its a special occasion, because it takes a lot of effort. Still, I can see her practice cooking with certain Umas like Hishi Akabeno, Nice Nature and Eishin Flash.

Honestly, the only style that can work for her right now is Great Escape. She basically doesn't have a spurt, meaning she can't pass people after wearing them down. She needs to put as much distance between her and the others as she can in order to reduce how much the others can overtake with their own spurts.
She doesn't have the speed for Great Escape though. There's a reason why you want maxed speed for every running style.
Could potentially end up with her being viewed as a sort of bad luck charm, though gamblers might like her because it makes races very unpredictable.
I think if she defeats a a favorite this way, the reaction the of the audience would be worse than with Rice Shower.

Edit: What I mean by that is that she would have won by putting others down, instead of lifting herself up. This does not get the Opera O Seal of Approval.
There are. It came up in Cinderella Gray during the race with Obey Your Master where she made an abrupt swerve to keep away from Tamamo Cross. If she hadn't been so far ahead of the rest of the pack that it didn't interfere with anything, she would have been disqualified. And it's a serious enough violation that they said you could be banned from racing if you did it.
Also McQueen got disqualified once for doing that.
if she's the unholy combination of Orfevre and T.M.Opera O.
The real question by everyone would be "Or-who?" Trade Mark what?

THat seems like the distances are too short for that though, at least the Mile races. Also you really don't need to dance on every party.
Dominator only works in medium races though. If Shirogane gets a gold red skill it'll probably be a frenzy skill that can cause other racers to rush when she's near them.
Meanwhile the tank that is Super Creek doesn't care and just goes faster xD.
Eventually Shirogane decides her goal is to run at least one in every single G1 race possible. Maybe she tries running in both the Oka Sho and Satsuki Sho, which just sounds like an absolutely insane thing to try.
But the Oka Sho is a Mile though. And of course there are only limited places available.
Hana: "This schedule is...far too crowded."
Shirogane: "Most other sports have matches every week, if not multiple per week."
Hana: "You'll need more time to recover."
Shirogane, running body enhancement: "A week seems enough to me."
To be fair, a) she also needs to train a lot more because of the shorter time compared to other sports (like football you can start with 8 basically), and b) that's by different teams/people each time, you don't get football teams that play every weekend for example.

I could see it as a Uma Chibi episodes

Gold Ship keeps challenging Shirogane into weird stuff, except Shirogane excels at everything and never showing a reaction

End of Episode is Gold crying to Fenomeno and Rudolf asking if Shirogane had fun with Gold Ship

Credits have an on all fours race gag pic

Thank you for the chapter.

You think Shirogane would want to work with Manhattan Cafe to open a cafe/restaurant? She'd be able to make a deal with Manhattan to get free coffee often. Only thing though is that she'd have to deal with "friend" and other weird paranormal activity.

Also makes me think of her going to Tamamo Cross and getting advice to deal with umas with huge appetites.

Cafe a few years later though Tanya being mentor to Cafe as a fellow Long racer would be interesting. She doesn't quite have her durability though as her career was spaced with long breaks.

Sharp gaze/All seeing eyes, would work. Tanya always got those lovely eyes.

Shirogane, running body enhancement: "A week seems enough to me."
Sadly for Shirogane, after Oguri Cap first year insane national start schedule, there are now limits.
