• The site has now migrated to Xenforo 2. If you see any issues with the forum operation, please post them in the feedback thread.
  • Due to issues with external spam filters, QQ is currently unable to send any mail to Microsoft E-mail addresses. This includes any account at live.com, hotmail.com or msn.com. Signing up to the forum with one of these addresses will result in your verification E-mail never arriving. For best results, please use a different E-mail provider for your QQ address.
  • For prospective new members, a word of warning: don't use common names like Dennis, Simon, or Kenny if you decide to create an account. Spammers have used them all before you and gotten those names flagged in the anti-spam databases. Your account registration will be rejected because of it.
  • Since it has happened MULTIPLE times now, I want to be very clear about this. You do not get to abandon an account and create a new one. You do not get to pass an account to someone else and create a new one. If you do so anyway, you will be banned for creating sockpuppets.
  • Due to the actions of particularly persistent spammers and trolls, we will be banning disposable email addresses from today onward.
  • The rules regarding NSFW links have been updated. See here for details.

Rule 8. Politics. Gone. For good.

"So, we checked out this forum you mentioned on your resume. Why didn't you tell us it had porn?"

"Well, I-"

"Because shit, man, it has the kinkiest shit on there! Everyone in the office got accounts! You have good taste, my friend. Hired."
"On the condition you'll revive your quest. I need to see what happens next."

I apologize if I made it sound like something different.
If I didn't have a policy of never giving likes to posts under 300 words, I'd have dropped one on this.
Don't deliberately court disruption, and there won't be an issue.
One of the things that really disappoints me about this thread is the lack of faith people seem to have in the staff.
Some people are loath to trust in others seeing the world the same way they do because they're used to the opposite. It can be hard to trust people not to screw you over when you're really used to everyone doing exactly that. "You're among friends" can be much easier to say than to truly believe. It's unfortunate.

Seems like a policy like that would cut out a lot of worthy posts simply on the basis of them not being padded or [CONTENT], but different strokes for different folks, I guess.

Essays and fics are all that get them, yes. And even then fairly rarely. I don't think we have likes-given stats here, but on SV I have 1,976 posts, 5,047 likes received and 59 likes given.

Yeah, I've been screwed-over by moderators I trusted far too often to just blindly trust them now. Including ones who I was actually friends with.

Eh, for a second I thought fictional politics are also banned. This change isn't gonna affect my storyline too much (not being a fan of RL politics and all, except in mocking them when the opportunity arises).

Might want to avoid that part. Even satire and mocking can provoke people to respond to it, to defend their pet politics, so that is banned too.

But, yeah, the fictional stuff is just fine.

Oh I didn't mean doing that here, I just meant that in places like real life (I can't feel my face right now).

But we can put current events in politics in a vague fictional light?

Like for example the young pope is about?

I've said it before, no. No real current politics, even with a thin coat of fiction. If it can be recognized as such, then answer is no.

And what are you talking about?
It's a show about a guy who won conclave to be pope because his voters thought he could be controlled due to status as an outsider (due to his age in the show) but it turns out he can't be because he's a hyper-conservative demagogue with a mean streak.

Still not familiar with any such show.

Just my two cents but it seems to me like you and the users are using different standards when referring to a 'thin coat' with you talking about Trump vs. Hillary, SJW ecc. with a thin veneer of story put on and the users thinking about plots which could be compared to current events but are different things.

I may be mistaken but that's how i'm reading the comments.

I can't help it if people want to read what I'm saying differently than what the words say.

Maybe gibbousmoons can articulate it better than me.

There's a big difference between "some people on the internet think Donald Trump is a pawn of Russia, therefore The Manchurian Candidate would be banned if it was posted on the forums as a fic" and "You can't run Saturday Night Live: The Quest".

People are getting upset over the former, while you're trying to implement the latter and thinking "Really guys? It's not that restrictive!"

SV's culture of legalism is in part a response to issues of communication like these.

TL/DR (as far as I understand it): West Wing is fine (just), South Park is not, anything in between is on the mods' discretion, and hoping we don't get a major incident about the Wampanoag tribe or whatever (this actually happened on AH.com). Is that right?

Maybe if you change Russians to aliens or demons then it doesn't set off rule 8?

What's your problem with Russians? I'm a perfectly fine guy. I don't even like the current president (of either country), anyway.
[EDIT: I'm assuming that your previous comment was a joke, and trying to respond non-seriously.]

Have I missed all the contentious political fics? To my knowledge there aren't any fics on QQ, past or present, that are challenged by this ruling. My knowledge of QQ is hardly encyclopedic but I do read quite a lot of stuff here. Given the amount of criticism that has been raised I assume there are some fics that would be banned under the current ruling. If people link them then we can get the staff to demonstrate where the line actually is with real world examples.

I really hope there are some fics in that category, the idea that everyone suddenly wants to write a political fic just because they are banned would be disappointing.
