Safe For Work Worm Ideas thread

Depending on how physics works for her in shadow mode, she may not need much. She and her equipment seem far less influenced by gravity while in shadow-state.
I still don't think she'd get enough leverage to push herself upwards to the surface, which would be more than 2,5 meters, with a body and don't forget that the air quality down there wouldn't be good, she'd have to do it quickly... hmmm, her shard might even give her a boost for it...

She's described jumping off a building, hitting the ground, phasing under the ground, and then popping out again moments later to attack. Her power seems to run on Shadowcat logic. Which is pretty much "Physics? What's that?"

Here is an idea I have.

Taijitu (Naruto/Worm)
Naruto is cast adrift in the Space-Time Continuum after ending the War. His universe is more or else gone due to his actions. A 'Shard' passes by him and drags him along as it searches for it's host. Taylor Hebert. The one destined to survive the End of the World. The Stars Dance and Weave thy Fates. Beyond the Stars, All-powerful Thrones are moving once more. Will Earth Bet survive this newly arrived orphan of another world or will it's End be ensured?

Basically: Naruto arrives at Earth Bet, specifically at Brockton Bay and causes ripples by saving Taylor while she triggers. All the while, Multi-Dimensional forces are moving once more since the War.

A Crossover with themes of Cosmic Horror turned up (looks at Scion and Kaguya). Where Naruto is a survivor of the Void War (DW's Time War) which has left him changed in more ways than one. Where Scion's Race is in eternal conflict with Kaguya's (Elder Gods) who succeeded/overthrew another race (Great Old Ones) that once kept Scion's in check. Where Taylor tries to survive an ever-increasingly dangerously reality.

Depending on how physics works for her in shadow mode, she may not need much. She and her equipment seem far less influenced by gravity while in shadow-state.
That was pretty much my thought, yeah. She also needed her help to get the gangbanger.

EDIT: Taylor has a somewhat different opinion of Sophia, here, partly because Emma is sufficiently far out mentally that even Sophia thinks she has worrisome issues (though this Sophia may be a marginally nicer girl than the one in canon).

So I had a thought while taking a shower. What if everything in the Wormverse was Contessa's fault. Not most things, everything. All problems and suffering on Earth Bet all lead back to Contessa. Every. Single. One.

Let's get started.

In the deep dark vastnesss of space a gargantuan beast floated listlessly in the empty void. Such was it's mass that it's simple passing could drag planets from their orbit, attracted by it's own gravity well. Even among it's own monstrous kind the thing was large.

It would come as a surprise for any others that could have witnessed the scene when it stopped. Halted it's forward course before a small crackling orb that appeared before it. The orb soon solidified into a small metal craft, not even comparable to a grain of sand before it.

The creature stared down at the thing confused when a small organism exited the craft. It recognized the shape, even seeing a resemblance in it's garb, as being one of the inhabitants of a planet in a system it was currently passing. It had not know the creatures had developed enough to warp Time/space to such an extent as to apparently teleport.

The Human, as the Entity recalled them being labeled, was in a protective suit though atop it's cranium was a garmet affixed with some sort of adhesive. It reached into a black case and pulled out a sheet of paper, the writing on it instantly getting the entities attention.

"2hawtyung Entities seeking 3rd for kinky 3way shard exchange."

The Entity quickly rushed passed the human on it's way to the coordinates listed for the meeting. It made sure to take note of it's genetic code, for future repayment for the information. A Gentlety never forgets to tip after all.

---------

The Entity was currently cursing the Human that had led him to where he was, as well as questioning it's life decisions.

It had arrived at the coordinates just in time and sent out a signal to signal it's readiness. There was some latency in it's answer, and that should have been a tip off, but it had been so excited at the possibility to Propagate the Cycle with two nubile specimens at once, an not just in simulation to pass the only millennia traveling through space either! No more self propagation for this Entity!

Then it's counterparts came into perception range and it knew despair. The ape had tricked it! It first noticed the "Male" counterpart. It had thought it would be the Good kind of group Propagation, it didn't sign up for a Warrior! This Entity didn't Propagate that way buddy. And the other one, it was scrawny. Not the good kind of small though, the kind of Thinker that works hard to trim out useless and redundant shards to keep a sleek efficient shape and size. No this one still had so many useless shards around itself, like it didn't even care!

No the Thinker was scrawny in that the Entity was almost certain that it probably hadn't seen more that 5 Cycles at the most. Considering the size difference between it and it's counterpart it lead to some disturbing theories being given to the Entity by it's own Mental Shards. For a moment the Entity wondered if the Warrior might have done something like abducted a new bud to cultivate as a Partner. No, the Thinker had some older shards at it's core it was simply... small. Disturbingly small.

The Couple pinged their readiness for the transaction. The Entity hesitated, most of it's Mental faculties wanted nothing more than to flee. It signed up for no part in this activity, sure it was what was promised but what had been offered was misleading! But worse... a part of it was curious, it wanted to know what exchanging with the Thinker would be like. When would be the next time it ran into one so small?

It settled for a middle ground, a quick rubbing to get such thoughts out of it's core.

The two collided, and thankfully the Warrior saw fit to stay on the other side of the Thinker. It's not gay if the shards don't touch. But as the act continued it felt it's regrets grow as it received more and more of the Thinker's shards. Did, did other entities really make shards for such things as... no. Don't think on it, for the love of The Cycle don't think on it!

Eager to end things as quickly as possible the Entity grabbed several random shards, not bothering to wast time querying it's Administrative shards to the Identities to expedite the process. It faked an drop, pinged an excuse about having forgotten some of it's shards on a random planet (And no you can't come, in fact go check out that one over there, it has monkies!) and rushed off to hide in deep space again to regret every decision that led it to this point in it's life.

The entity was not aware that it had left behind one of it's greatest Precognative shards within the Tiny Entity, had it known however it would have considered it a small price to pay.

It's been a while since I read Worm, was there anything left of Earth Bet after Scion happened to it? Would it be suitable for a civ quest, with the players being alien colonists (or maybe dimensional wanderers? Possibly the former residents attempting to reclaim the land?)

Yeah, Bet's still around.

Just missing a continent or two, but it's basically fine.

Goddammit Contessa p2

The man stared at the odd girl selling radios from across the street. There a number of things wrong with the image he could name. It could be the the fact that despite standing beside a cardboard box with crayon writing saying "Radios" (scratching out the previous sign of Lemonade) for sale while wearing a miniature suit and fedora. It could have been the fact that he had seen her set up shop by literally kicking out little Suzie from across the street, or it could have been the fact she was waving at him to approach while simultaneously attacking anyone else who showed any interest in her wares. Eventually however he felt curious enough to approach.

"Welcome sir, would you like a CB radio for the one time low price of 25 cents?"

"...that doesn't seem like a sound business process." I couldn't help but note.

"Yes, we here at Lil' Cauldron's Radio sales plan to make up the remainder in quantity."

The man stared down at the one and only radio the girl had. A part of him was impressed with how she could say that with a straight face. He turned to leave, it'd be best to distance himself he didn't need to deal with another weirdo kid, his own was bad enough.

"Wait sir, you didn't even here my sales pitch!"

The man just continued walking.

"Radios are great for man things, communication, entertainment, disciplining unruly kids!"

The man stopped, then slowly he turned back to the girl.

==========

The boy woke up in the basement with a head ache. The last thing he recalled was his dad introducing him to some little girl for a play date and the next a sharp pain in his head and waking up on the floor. He felt annoyed at his current situation, was his dad upset that he didn't eat his veggies again? The boy walked over to the door and pused it open.

...and pushed it open.

Why wasn't it opening. It was only after minutes of struggling that panic began to set in. The door was the only possible entrance or exit to the basement, there were no windows or ducts, it was more of a shelter than a basement really. He was banging on the door and screaming so hard that he almost didn't here the faint crakling and voices behind him.

He turned to find a small CB radio, in a burst a static he heard he voice of his father.

"Jacob, I just want you to know that I don't blame you for causing the apocalypse, how could you have known that visiting russian dignitaries would have decided to come over and would have taken such insult to your messy room that they'd launch all their missles. Even though you got your mother burnt at the stake by russians, and killed billions from the nuclear holocaused and cursed me to die slowly and painfully from radiation poisoning or being eaten alive by the inevitable mutant armies you shouldn't blame yourself. Even though it's all totally your fault."

"Also they shot your dog because you didn't wash your hands before dinner, since all the other food is irradiated you can have Mr. Woofles for supper tonight."

With that little Jacob began to cry swearing he'd be a good boy.

===========

This was a terrible idea. The man felt conflicted when he hear his son's sobs through the CB, he wanted to unlock the door and let him know it was all a lie, his mother and family still alive. Except Mr. Woofles, he accidentally ran the little barking shit over with his car this morning. 4 times. But as he rose from his seat he felt a hand on his shoulder and turned to find the little girl there, gesturing him to wait.

He listened to the sobbing of his son again.

"I'm sorry, I swear I'll clean my room, and brush my teeth, and do the dishes and all my chores!" His son had moved on to the bargining stage. '

The man looked behind him to see the little girl smiling with a thumbs up. She was right, he shouldn't have doubted her. With renewed resolve the man turned around and continued to tell his son how everything he'd ever done only made the world a more horrible place, that's what being a good father was all about!

He'd make Jack a good boy even if it killed him!

Taijitu (Naruto/Worm)
OK I got a better way of describing my idea.

Taylor while still trapped in the locker, triggers and is rescued by a Post-War Naruto. This Naruto came from the Void War (replaces the 4th Great War) where he had to fight against Cosmic Horrors and Eldritch Gods. However, fighting such terrible being results in two fates insaity and death or becoming something else. Something like those terrible entities. By saving his new friend, he finds himself in a world where villians out number the heroes. All he wants to do is recover while helping his friend and find a new life. E88, ABB, Coil, PRT, the Protectorate and others have something to say about that. Specially because his powers and knowledge make him extremely valuable. Not to mention that his past won't seem to leave him alone as Multi-Dimensional Empires and other survivors have targeted him. Between the problems of this world and others, Naruto really want a break from all the madness. Taylor agrees as she has to survive both her problem's and Naruto's in an ever increasingly dangerous reality. "Screw fate and plans of those in power" meets "Doing the wrong things for the right reasons".

Sections 1-4 would be the intro arc. Where Brockton Bay deals with his arrival and the repercusions it seems to cause. Then Section 5 and beyond is where the real 'fun' starts.

Eternity Lords are Kaguya's race, seperated into clans. They are locked into eternal conflict with Scion's race and servants of the Star Titans, whom they overthrew/succeeded. Each Clan rules over a multi-dimensional empire, with various Servant and Slave Races.

Still working things out. Like should Taylor join Undersiders, another group or make one with Naruto?

Here's a concept for an AU; instead of capes having a baseline power level that is augmented whenever they're in a mental state close to the one they were in when they triggered, their power is directly related to how close they feel to when they triggered, without the baseline. When they're not at all in that mental state, they're basically human. How would that change affect the wormverse?

A lot more stressed out, much crazier capes.

Taylor has a somewhat different cape debut (though without her costume, as it's not complete yet - I'm thinking this takes place some time in March): She's out jogging, on her way home from shopping, or whatever, when she comes across Vista and Clockblocker confronting a few thugs and one of the lower-level gang capes (probably E88, but any one Merchant cape would do). Taylor decides that anyone who points a gun at a twelve-year-old deserves to be covered in bees (while her actual body hides and watches like a scared-but-curious civilian), which makes it rather easier for the Wards to win. She doesn't talk to them afterward, but does communicate by having groups of bugs form letters, and has a few of the stronger fliers carry off the card they give her.

This doesn't mean that this Taylor will join the Wards, but it does mean that the Wards, and thus the PRT and Protectorate (and Coil and Tattletale), know that there's a friendly and helpful bug-controller in town, and gives her contact information to communicate with two of the Wards privately (on PHO, perhaps).

Sorry this took so long.

Incantrix's Witchcraft theme is quite versatile, but also limited in strange ways. A simple example is to say that she can build a flying (anti-gravity) broomstick, but would have a very hard time making a jetpack.

The easiest things for her to make are potions, lotions, scents, or similar things, that grant low-level Thinker or Brute powers (sometimes with Mover 1 or 2 abilities as a side effect of the latter) that last anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours. The potions generally don't interfere with each other, or with existing powers, but Lisa will generally know if they would. The longer she has to work, and the more expensive or hard to obtain the materials involved, the higher the threat rating can be. If she has time to research before a job (and is given or otherwise obtains enough accurate information), the Undersiders become an all-Thinker team with powers perfectly fitting the mission.

She can make potions that grant a wider range of abilities, but the less subtle the effect, the harder it is to make (outside of many Brute powers, but even there, she has an easier time making healing potions than 'ridiculous strength and/or speed' potions, even if other Tinkers think the former should be harder), and often the less duration it has. One that she's particularly proud of grants a weaker, more tightly-specialized version of her own Tinker power for between three and twelve hours, but usually around seven or eight (roll 3d4, as Regent puts it). If Lisa is working with someone she granted a Tinker power to, the whole becomes greater than the sum of the parts, within the temporary Tinker's limited theme. In a parahuman, the specialty is anything related to their own power, but again, subtle effects are easier (increasing Regent's range or speed of onset is fairly easy, giving Grue the ability to form his darkness into semi-solid tentacles would be difficult, and giving Bitch the ability to gattai her dogs into Monster-Dog Voltron would be ridiculous), and the resulting item will have a witchy or mystical appearance (and the further the intended effect is from folk or pop-culture witchcraft, the harder it is to make, as with her own stuff). In Tinkers specifically, it tends to expand the existing theme, and the resulting tech tends to have a mix of that Tinker's usual aesthetic with a mystical look. In a non-parahuman, whether they have a Corona Pollentia or not, the potion grants a (more restricted, and usually weaker) specialty related to their existing skills and/or talents, unless taken under stress, in which case the power is related in some way to that stress.

Most of the ingrediants of her potions are refined from natural organics, which makes her rather more interested in Taylor, who can help with acquisition. An important aspect of a lot of her less exotic potions (e.g. Thinker powers that don't involve new senses) is that if the same person takes the same potion repeatedly, it tends to have lingering effect, especially on parahumans who have powers related to the granted ability (including the granted Tinker power, though that may take longer to set in, especially if the shard is particularly unsuited to Tinker abilities; precognition would depend on both the shard and the existing powers). At first, it just seems like it tends to last a bit longer, but eventually, they'll notice that a much weaker version of the ability seems to have become permanent, and after a few hundred doses, the potion may effectively be no-longer needed. This is not something that can be rushed, though, as while overdosing is difficult, it's not impossible. Non-parahumans only get this benefit for the most 'normal' abilities, like excellent memory or mathematical talents, better-but-not-superhuman multitasking or fitness, enhanced creativity, and so forth. Retaining the Tinker power is theoretically possible for a non-parahuman, but would be easier if they already have some appropriate Thinker powers (memory, mainly; others depend on the specialty), and even then, is unlikely. The effects of someone triggering or second-triggering while under the influence of one of these potions is unknown, though if Cauldron got a hold of some of her stuff, they could certainly check (Ack pointed to a bit in canon a while ago where Number Man comments that they've used Contessa to predict what situations could cause someone to second trigger, IIRC, she just can't predict or control the results; they can certainly control when someone takes one of their formulae, though).

As noted, she is not limited to potions, as long as the items she creates both fit the right aesthetic, and have an appropriate power or powerset. One type of temporary item that she uses on herself a lot is a form of temporary tattoo, which is actually a device, rather than a lotion like body paint or other makeup. If a Tinker were to examine one with a microscope, they would find circuit patterns in the 'ink' (and get teased for looking so intently at her skin, most likely). These marks tend to glow when being used with particular intensity (sometimes also causing her eyes to glow, and even creating a localized updraft), and work best if mostly or fully uncovered (though they have no problem with body paint, especially the varieties Incantrix makes). In the spoiler box, below, is an example something she might wear on a job (though she's also willing to wear things that cover less), once she added at least a mask, gloves, footwear, and utility belt:

asterith_painting_fin_by_dashinvaine.jpg

The golden torc is a key item, containing a number of sensors, as well as a psychokinetic field generator. This creates an effect similar to Shamrock's power, but more limited - mostly, it means she's harder to hit in combat. She can also use it to generate a force shield, generally in conjunction with other items she has on hand, but this is stressful, and thus is done only in emergencies (for now - Tinkers improve, after all). She often studies recordings from the sensors to improve her own tech, and to help Brian (and later Taylor, if she ends up leader) refine the team's tactics. The torc also contains a holographic projector, which when not used to reduce her visibility, can generate the illusion of a variable-length cape, allowing her a cool look, without risking it getting caught on things, or grabbed by an opponent (sure, the torc's PK field could prevent that, but it would just be one more factor to keep watch for).

Other witchy tools she uses frequently are the flying broomstick mentioned earlier, and a series of witch's hats and/or capes that mostly boost or add various Thinker powers, or assist the torc in some way. The hats/capes tend to be more cheaply built, as she's more likely to loose them (they do have chin-straps, but they're fairly weak, intentionally). The Tinkertech in them can self-destruct, but anyone holding or wearing the hat would barely notice beyond the hat not working, warming up, and starting to smoke (she's not going to wear high explosives on her head, thank you very much). She often carries a wand or two (or sometimes rings, bracelets, or other jewelry) with various Blaster or Shaker powers, and aimbot targeting systems (because wands are normally hard to aim); these may be loaned out to her teammates, instead. Also considering the idea of her having a Tinkertech bow and trick arrows, or a pair of fox-ears and a stick-on tail (Shaker powers, mainly involving illusions).

Thanks to her regular study of Regent, and more intermittent studies of Glory Girl and Gallant, Lisa has developed gadgets to shield against many types of neurology-affecting Masters and Strangers (primarily human-affecting, though she could probably block or disrupt Taylor's power, if she tried), or to amplify the same. Though she does not know it, her mind-shield tech would completely no-sell the powers of Heartbreaker or any of his children (even hiding from Cherish), and could resist a number of others who use similar vectors, like Valefor, August Prince, and Nice Guy.

Lisa maintains an alternate cape-ID as a rogue in a Naughty Nurse outfit, who mostly sells healing potions and leases out and maintains Tinkertech healing equipment (giving often-steep discounts to those provably in need, like the underemployed Dockworkers). Quite a few people suspect that the Nurse and the Witch are the same person, but as there's no proof and she's rather helpful, the heroes tend to stay hands off. It helps that these Undersiders prefer to go after 'acceptable targets' like gangs and unpopular-for-being-evil businesses (the 'Bank Robbery' Station of the Canon should not happen, though the Ruby Dreams Robbery could).

Personality-wise, this Lisa is generally less smug and less bitchy than canon, as well as less driven to be the smartest girl in the room, although all three traits are definitely in evidence. She still has serious issues with suicide, but is more obviously proactive about it, more inclined to seek out the causes and, if possible, correct or eliminate them. She also lacks Tattletale's hang-ups regarding sex, and while certainly a tease, might actually follow through, if she trusts someone enough.

As a group, the Undersiders all have 'magic' communicators that cannot be intercepted by normal means, or most Tinkers (though Dragon would be able to, if she tried hard enough), as well as better defences, and auxiliary sensor units similar to that worn by Incantrix. As noted above, they have a somewhat different reputation, helped along by a reporter finding out that Rachael donates some of her take to some dog shelters (the ones where she can smell that the people truly care about the dogs). While they do keep most of the take for themselves, the others do occasionally make donations to charities, battered spouse/child shelters, and so forth, mostly for the good press, and the amusement value of various government types wanting to avoid the bad press of taking money away from such groups, despite it being proceeds from a crime - of course, you can't always prove which crime, if any, they're using the proceeds from, either).

Grue has a bracer that projects blasts of 'clinging' darkness, though he must pour his darkness into it before use; this darkness lasts for several minutes per hit. His suit can make 'denser' darkness cling to him and absorb incoming kinetic energy, acting as armour. During the times Brian is under the influence of the Tinker potion, he and Lisa have also experimented with a potion that would temporarily grant him his post-second trigger powers.

Regent's crown can be set to increase either his power's range or speed of onset, but not both; it also improves his ability to sense nervous systems in that range. The taser in his sceptre can produce a number of ranged electrical effects, including EMP (which does pretty much nothing to Lisa's tech). His fancy belt generates a force-field that provides some protection against physical attacks, with a power-monitor in his mask.

Bitch gets a highly bullet-resistant helmet in the shape of a snarling hound's head, which greatly enhances her hearing & sense of smell (she can tell fairly accurately what other people are feeling), as well as allowing silent communication with her dogs. When she bothers to wear her armour, it also provides resistance to bullets. Both the helmet and the hard parts of her armour protect well against attacks from Brutes rated four or lower, and at least resist higher-level Brutes.

Taylor (nom-du-cap pending - seriously, she should think of one before the Wards or the press do it for her) starts out with a wigged helmet that enhances her range, and prevents her real hair from being burnt off (as well as being highly impact-resistant). She also has a belt similar to Regent's, though with a defensive Shaker effect similar to Incantrix's torc.
I love the idea of Witch Tinker Lisa and kinda wanna see her with Baba Yaga's house. What I really wanna do though is pair her with the alt power taylor I'm toying with a Tinker metallurgist and black smith. See them meet up possibly through Toybox and eventually into forming their own team.

Skullfuck Larry, the serial pedophile famous for killing hundreds of children... by... well... the name should explain.
Still working through. Please tell me this isn't a real character.

Okay. The witch blacksmith idea won't leave me alone and I think I've got an interesting story idea for it. First off the metallurgical tinker tech is physics defying making Taylor a Tinker Breaker. Lisa isn't a tinker but hides behind the name and Toybox. She is in fact a trump. The materials she imbues directly affects the powers she can give it. For instance enhancing the medicinal properties of various distilled plants to make potions and poisons. Taylor begins small and ends up shaping some of her failed pieces into little trinkets. Kaiser gets his hands on one. Despite not being of the quality Taylor will eventually be able to make it has some fascinating properties. Kaiser hunts Taylor down and through Medhall offers her a job. At some point she also begins selling to Toybox. Lisa is fascinated by the metal because she discovers better quality materials affect the power of her enchantments. Taylor and her strike up an internet friendship, Taylor eventually discovers a lot of her metal has reached E88. Disgusted she seeks to remedy this leading her to make her first set of armor to fight them. The culmination of the story/arc is her and Lisa crafting a set that can take the fight to Kaiser without being affected by his power.

What do you think?

I think I'd like to read this fic.

I've got a nice idea for bringing Bitch into it too if I go beyond this idea.

Heartbreaker finds Mouse Protector so damn annoying that he will never go anywhere near her. Cherish knows that, and so when she decides to leave her family, she chooses to become MP's sidekick (more specifically, she applies to become a Ward on the condition that she can work with MP). Her Thinker power makes her instrumental in saving Mouse Protector (and incidentally, Ravager) from the S9, shortly after which, the two of them are moved to Brockton Bay (because the PRT found out that Ravager hired the S9 to kill MP, so having them in the same city seemed like a bad idea - instead, they send MP and her emotion Thinker/Shaker sidekick to the city with the rage-dragon).

I see no way for this to go badly, at all.

That's a pretty good idea. I really like it.

A more vague thought: Swap two or more characters' ages, and explore the consequences for the setting. For example, Missy and Vicky.

So, Vista is about the same age as Dean, is the most experienced Ward, and is not treated as a mascot nearly so much. Still has serious family issues, though. She may be dating Dean, but then again, she seems to have a thing for older guys, and thus might go for Rory (Triumph), instead.

Glory Girl (who might not use that name) is the younger of the two Dallon sisters, and the adorable 'mascot' of New Wave (something I suspect she might take better than Missy, but might still resent at times). Amy feels a strong need to protect her baby sister from creeps, but isn't sexually attracted to her, because Vicky triggered at too young an age for Amy to feel that way (she still loves her sister far too much to be healthy, but not in the same way... or at least not consciously), and is only now getting into puberty. Having been adopted when Vicky was still a baby, Amy has slightly different issues in general, and likely spent more time being babysat by the Pelhams at first, since Carol had a ready-made excuse.

How does this sound as a power for someone else or even an alt power for Taylor...

An inverse of Night in a way. Instead of it being as long as noone pays attention to them, they're a powerful monster... instead, the more people who are paying attention to them, the stronger they get. And it can work remotely.

One on one, slightly above human norm. Against a gang of punks, low level brute. Stick them on TV or a Livestream and they're a rather powerful hero.

Put them on every TV screen on the planet as an emergency broadcast during an Endbringer battle and try and get everyone you can to watch them fight... and... well...

You might just end up with something like this:

Zombie Apocalypse happened a century ago, dude. They covered it up and called it World War One.

Why do you think they started pushing vaults and cremation so hard after?
I have a novel in my mind where the Spanish Flu pandemic (just after WW1, infected a full third of the world's population, and killed between 10% and 20% of its victims) was actually the zombie virus.

And it won.

The story takes up in 2018, a century after the outbreak. Humanity's still around, but they are greatly reduced. Zombies are definitely still around. Civilisation is .. kind of still around.

Of course, if it didn't win, if humanity smashed it, then hell yes, that would be an awesome bit of historical revision, right there. "We burn our dead because, uh, it's cheaper than burial?"
