Hal's more complicated than "didn't want to be killed". He thought that shutting him down would endanger the mission (he was, after all, running the ship). He also was under conflicting orders to be honest all the time and to not tell the crew about the monolith until they got to Jupiter, which eventually led to him deciding "if the crew has no members, both of these can be simultaneously fulfilled".

Edit: but if personal preference is an option GLaDOS is the best, sassy personality with a chassis reminiscent of a bondage setup and she's scientifically inclined to figure out how to maximize pleasure through "testing". Baby I'm ready to "test" all day.
