With This Ring (Young Justice SI) (Thread Fourteen)

In short, my point is that you can't actually assume infinity. Infinity is a mind-screw even if you DON'T bring cosmology into it, and it doesn't behave the way most people think it does. Proving that something is infinite -- even if you're working with sets that you already know are infinite -- can be very difficult.
That's because infinity is not a number, it's an infinite amount of numbers hiding in a trench coat...

It always generates discussion on the internet, but SpaceBattles is where this particular form of it is universally true - ten pages, regardless of anything else, etc. Check out how many posts the pre-Overgirl chapters had between them in this arc. Then the second someone said "universe where the Nazis won" everyone and their dog trot out their pet theories. :p

My pet theory is that Hitler, pet lover, earned Krypto's allegance through pats.

Then, they played 'Fetch' with battleships until they won!

While waiting for the post in this thread rather than story only, may I just say this whole episode is a gigantic giggle-fest. Short chapters, sure, but they're really bringing a smile to my face

"Hallo?"

Ms Brauer doesn't have a secret identity, but sometimes using someone's nom de héroïque is appropriate anyway. It indicates that you treat their work seriously, rather than thinking of them as some kind of costumed lunatic.

Who isn't also doing a decent job.

But this is out of hours. She's not on the job, and calling her 'Donner' might make her think this is some sort of emergency

Ah, just sidestep it.

"Hi, Orange Lantern here. Are you busy?"

"I can talk. Have you found another one of us?"

Not in the way you're asking.

"No, I… Actually need to ask a favour. We just had a hole to a parallel universe open in near-Earth orbit. A woman came through, and she's… Having a bit of culture shock. You're… She knows their version of you, and… Nearly no one else here has a direct equivalent. Are you willing to meet her?"

"What sort of parallel universe?"

I wince inwardly.

"Your parents would probably have liked it."

"My p-? You mean… The Nazis..?"

"Yeah. So you know better than anyone what sort of environment she grew up in."

"Is she dangerous? Violent?"

"So far she's been.. about as reasonable as she could be. She's clearly not happy, but I've explained how things are different here and the worst she's done is use intemperate language to describe it."

M'gann turns away from their ongoing conversation to frown at my use of the word 'intemperate'. Because M'gann knows how I use that word, and while Angelika is being a little standoffish, she's being polite. She isn't giving any overt sign of being angry or scared. I guess even Nazi's just a word, until they start calling your friends subhuman.

"Why are you asking for her?"

"Because you had a change of heart and I'd like you do help her do the same. Her existing relationship-" Angelika frowns at me. "-with your alter-ego means that she's more likely to listen to you than… Well…"

"Everyone knows about the cake."

"She.. doesn't."

Angelika shakes her head and turns back to Kon. "Did Orange Lantern do something with a cake?"

"Didn't, hurray for super hearing."

"Hehaha. Yes, okay, I can see her. Have you been clear that I am not the other version of me?"

"I'll reiterate-"

"He what?!"

I sigh quietly. "-it. Where are you?"

"Val and I are in Inges Karotte in Munich. Can you find it?"

Hotel? Bar? Doesn't matter.

"Yes, no problem. Thank you. I'll see you shortly."

I hang up.

"Hah!"

And there's a picture of the cake on the holographic display.

"Overgirl, she's fine with meeting you-."

"Of course she is." She presses a button and the hologram vanishes. "Where is she?"

"Munich, so we're heading there. They don't have a zeta tube, so we'll head to Berlin and fly."

She nods. "Okay." She returns her attention to my friends. "Kon-El, M'gann, Aqualad, it was nice to meet you all."

"Yeah." Kon smiles and waves as we head towards the zeta tube. "Hope you get home soon!"

"Now, I want to be sure that you understand that-"

"Recognized, Orange Lantern, B zero six, Overgirl, A Six One."

"-your Gerri Brauer and ours aren't-."

"She isn't a National Socialist, I know. I heard everything both of you said." She taps her right ear with her right forefinger. "'Over hearing'."

"She was brought up as a National Socialist, but stopped after-."

"After she saw the wonders of your de-. Society. And you want her to convince me."

I point upwards with my right forefinger. She nods, and we rapidly ascend above the Berlin streets and turn south south west.

"If it helps, I'm happy to let you try and turn me into a National Socialist. If you have objective evidence, I'll examine it."

"Hm, very gracious of you. But Aunty Gerri was not a very.. 'good' National Socialist on my Earth." She smiles. "Heh. She still jokes to me about being a sexual deviant."

"Really? What particular deviation..?"

"That she is attracted to women. The first time she did it I nearly telephoned the State Police. Even after she explained it to me I thought it was a shocking thing to joke about for years. But now it's just tiresome. 'Aunty Gerri, please, it's not funny anymore, you're not fooling anyone.'"

"Seems.. like a bit of a risky joke."

"We don't execute people for making jokes."

Ring, what sort of place is Inges Karotte?

Ah.

Well I can't pretend

"Theoretically, what would happen in your society if she wasn't joking, she just used that as a cover when you walked in on her with her girlfriend?"

Angelika stops in the air and gives me an extremely disturbed look.

"Why are you asking?"

The first line you wrote "Hallo".
It should be ''Hello", unless she has an accent that is.

This is going to be so goodx3

And yeah could Val help Wally with his problems?
Will the paragon Wally, or anyone on the paragon side, or i don't know a diffrent universe, discover a way to help paragon Wally with his eating disorder and make him faster anytime in your story?
If so could you tell us what year?

Well I can't pretend
I am going to point out here that just because she's a Lesbian on Earth-14 doesn't mean she's actually a Lesbian on Earth-10.

Also that Nazi Earth probably would have used their mind control rays to eliminate that particular "deviance" entirely because that's the sort of thing evil groups with mind control technology tend to do.

Until it turns out that mind controled people aren't actually good at anything and have to be told how not to start fires or get stuck on fence posts.

It's only polite to use a Cape name if they insist, certainly. Of course, you never know who might be listening...

But this is out of hours. She's not on the job, and calling her 'Donner' might make her think this is some sort of emergency

Ah, just sidestep it.
Ah, the OL way. Some would call it rude, but it's expedient when needed.

"Hi, Orange Lantern here. Are you busy?"

"I can talk. Have you found another one of us?"

Not in the way you're asking.
Heh, so many Danner enhanciles around. I suppose the DC writers have a fondness for 'super-strong and tough' as a generic powerset.

"No, I… Actually need to ask a favour. We just had a hole to a parallel universe open in near-Earth orbit. A woman came through, and she's… Having a bit of culture shock You're… She knows their version of you, and… Nearly no one else here has a direct equivalent. Are you willing to meet her?"

"What sort of parallel universe?"
Oh, how to answer that one... Let's go with discreet?

I wince inwardly.

"You're parents would probably have liked it."
...That works well enough.

"My p-? You mean… The Nazis..?"

"Yeah. So you know better than anyone what sort of environment she grew up in."
Though I suspect Donner's was just a wee bit harsher

"Is she dangerous? Violent?"

"So far she's been.. about as reasonable as she could be. She's clearly not happy, but I've explained how things are different here and the worst she's done is use intemperate language to describe it."
That's a remarkably mild term to describe some of her statements...

M'gann turns away from their ongoing conversation to frown at my use of the word 'intemperate'. Because M'gann knows how I use that word, and while Angelika is being a little standoffish, she's being polite. She isn't giving any overt sign of being angry or scared. Ah, she knows him well. Question is, does she object to the term, or alerted to any risk of.. outbursts.

"Why are you asking for her?"

"Because you had a change of heart and I'd like you do help her do the same. Her existing relationship-" Angelika frowns at me. "-with your alter-ego means that she's more likely to listen to you than… Well…"
...A relative stranger, who simply claims to be similarly dimensionally displaced. Yeah, I doubt Overgirl is enjoying OL harping on it, no matter how poilte he is.

"Everyone knows about the cake."

"She.. doesn't."

Angelika shakes her head and turns back to Kon. "Did Orange Lantern do something with a cake?"
No sooner said than explained. He is seriously never going to live that down on Earth, is he?

"Didn't, hurray for super hearing."

"Hehaha. Yes, okay, I can see her. Have you been clear that I am not the other version of me?"

"I'll reiterate-"
I'm sure Angelika will forget as soon as she sees 'Aunti Gerri'...

"He what?!"

I sigh quietly. "-it. Where are you?"

"Val and I are in Inges Karotte in Munich. Can you find it?"
Oh, boy. This day just gets better and better. Got to wonder if their relationship is the same in Earth 10...

Hotel? Bar? Doesn't matter.

"Yes, no problem. Thank you. I'll see you shortly."
And then wish he wasn't. Could someone cue up a 'Blue Oyster Bar' scene from Police Academy?

I hang up.

"Hah!"

And there's a picture of the cake on the holographic display.
Damn you, Internet! Making it easy to embarrass respected heroes!

"Overgirl, she's fine with meeting you-."

"Of course she is." She presses a button and the hologram vanishes. "Where is she?"
When she's this perky, it's easy to forget she's a Nazi. ("National Socialist!")

"Munch, so we're heading there. They don't have a zeta tube, so we'll head to Berlin and fly."

She nods. "Okay." She returns her attention to my friends. "Kon-El, M'gann, Aqualad, it was nice to meet you all."
Still disappointed they didn't have counterparts on Earth 10. Überjunge, Fräulein Martian and Unterseejunge, anyone?

"Yeah." Kon smiles and waves as we head towards the zeta tube. "Hope you get home soon!"

"Now, I want to be sure that you understand that-"
Really do not think she's listening, OL...

Honestly, he's wasting his breath...

"She isn't a National Socialist, I know. I heard everything both of your said." She taps her right ear with her right forefinger. 'Over hearing'."
Huh. Wonder how long that'll last when she sees a familiar face...

"She was brought up as a National Socialist, but stopped after-."

"After she saw the wonders of your de-. Society. And you want her to convince me."
De-... Depraved? Detestable? I'm guessing whatever it was, it wasn't nice.

I point upwards with my right forefinger. She nods, and we rapidly ascend above the Berlin streets and turn south south west.

"If it helps, I'm happy to let you try and turn me into a National Socialist. If you have objective evidence, I'll examine it."
Key word being 'objective'. Not that he really wants to convert...

"Hm, very gracious of you. But Aunty Gerri was not a very.. 'good' National Socialist on my Earth." She smiles. "Heh. She still jokes to me about being a sexual deviant."

"Really? What particular deviation..?"
Seriously? She gets away with it by...

"That she is attracted to women. The first time she did it I nearly telephoned the State Police. Even after she explained it to me I thought it was a shocking thing to joke about for years. But now it's just tiresome. 'Aunty Gerri, please, it's not funny anymore, you're not fooling anyone.'"

...Joking about it? Talk about Refuge in Audacity.

"Seems.. like a bit of a risky joke."

"We don't execute people for making jokes."

Dammit, and I thought she was smart. Such naivete.

Ring, what sort of place is Inges Karotte?

Ah.
To be fair, you could have done that sooner. Oh, well, hindsight is 20/20...

Well I can't pretend

"Theoretically, what would happen in your society if she wasn't joking, she just used that as a cover when you walked in on her with her girlfriend?"
And a question that loaded will immediately put her on guard.

Angelika stops in the air and gives me an extremely disturbed look.

"Why are you asking?"
And this was all going so well... OL is going to look back and declare "What was I thinking? Sweet Eris, what was I thinking..." while pinching the bridge of his nose.

The excrement is on course for the rotary cooling device. Let's hope she at least has the sense not to start throwing punches...

Corrections:

"Located in the Glockenbachviertel (Glockenbach neighborhood), this is one of the major international gathering places for lesbians in Munich, attracting a widely diverse group of ages, professions, and interests."

Well, this should get interesting. For god's sake, keep a close eye on her while there. You don't want her getting propositioned, going into a gay panic, and turning someone into chunky salsa.

M'gann turns away from their ongoing conversation to frown at my use of the word 'intemperate'. Because M'gann knows how I use that word, and while Angelika is being a little standoffish, she's being polite.
I don't think he's used that word before in the text of the story, or at least I didn't find anything from searching the story only threads. Something from out of frame? Who has M'gann heard him describe with that before?

Munich, not Munch, although that would be the perfect city to build a lesbian nightclub if it was called that.
Thank you, corrected.
Weird way to use french, did you mean "nom héroïque" or "nom d'héroïsme"?
I think he was trying to play off of the "Nom de guerre" thing.
Yes, I don't speak French.
Corrections: "Your parents would probably have liked it."

Yes.

And yeah could Val help Wally with his problems?
Not at this point, other than being another scientifically-trained pair of eyes. Her version makes her as fast as him but without the adverse side effects, but it wouldn't do anything to the dose he already gave himself.
Will the paragon Wally, or anyone on the paragon side, or i don't know a different universe, discover a way to help paragon Wally with his eating disorder and make him faster anytime in your story?
No.
Well, this should get interesting. For god's sake, keep a close eye on her while there. You don't want her getting propositioned, going into a gay panic, and turning someone into an expanding cloud of mist.
Ah, gay panic defence. It sounds so awesome, like a kind of homosexual limit break, but it's actually so rubbish.

It's dissapointing that they won't find a solution for Wally's problem in your story.
I guess that all i can do is hope that life extension technology advances in the coming years so that you could write a sequel where they do find a solution.

Couldn't OL just ask the Sivanas for help?
Magni is working on alchemy, he's 'friends' with TJ and Georgia, dated Beautia that one time and has a workable relationship with Dr Sivana Senior, who could give Dr Doom and Mr Fantastic a run for their money when it comes to science and has at least some knowledge on alchemy and magic.

Speaking of Reed Richards, how would avenger Paul convince him to use his genius toward civilian applications?

I am not quite sure how to best put this, but this depiction of a Nazi world seems far to positive with the negative aspects being treated as distant events in the past. It seems as if you are treating the current state of Overgirl's home world to be not be substantially different than the default state of DC Canon or the Real World in a manner that totally overlooks the tremendous evils that would be ever-present in a "Nazi World".

I would think that this branch of the story would be greatly improved if the continual evil nature of the Nazi regime is emphasized in the next few chapters. The horrors that were perpetuated by the Nazi regime should not be treated as aberrations of the past that can be dismissed but rather should be recognized as an inherent feature of Nazi ideology that ensures that any Nazi regime will be a monstrosity of continual oppression and mass suffering.

Something I've been meaning to ask Zoat for a while now - if the point in space where OL came through is the same as for Overgirl, what's that relative to? i.e. the earth, and if so what coordinates and distance from the surface? Or is it relative to something else, and therefore that point could align with any other planet if activated at the right time?

Wallace has a solution. He drinks a small healing potion every other day or so and otherwise has a normal life.

Wallace would not be okay with working with the Sivanas.

No wouldn't. He'd convince Victor.

You mean that a dedicated National Socialist is pretty upbeat about the world the NDSAP created? Well... Yes? She would be, wouldn't she?

Germania doesn't oppress 'proper' Germanians, and they've pretty much mastered making sure that their children grow up as proper Germanians. And those Germanians don't really notice the mechanisms that exist to make sure that they grow up proper any more than I notice CCTV cameras. And if you are proper, then Germania is actually a pretty nice place to live.

They don't regard the holocaust as an aberration. It's taught as having been a harsh but necessary thing, and that aspect of the war isn't really emphasised.

Keep in mind that this is being seen through the eyes of someone who has largely benefited from the regime and seems exempt from the normal rules about... anything.

Not to mention she's been educated and isolated among their elite, far away from the grim realities of what life is like for people who don't get to ignore the rules.

Are we going to see Overgirl freak out? If yes, hopefully Paul can keep collateral damage to a minimum.

Also, will this negatively impact Overgirl's relationship with her Auntie Gerri? I hope not, but it is a distinct possibility.

Yes, probably one of those.

Not... Exactly. She knows what life is like for the economically disadvantaged, and she knows what their prisons are like. But she knows about the prisons in the contexts of making sure that serious criminals are sent there, and tends to associate everyone else there with the sorts of things that those people do.
Are we going to see Overgirl freak out? If yes, hopefully Paul can keep collateral damage to a minimum.
Overgirl has been freaking out constantly this this started, but refuses to lose control in front of these degenerates.
Also, will this negatively impact Overgirl's relationship with her Auntie Gerri? I hope not, but it is a distinct possibility.
Probably.

Zoats right that when most people think of someone going to prison they think he is a serious offender, instead of the sentence being harsh and the person being innocent.
On her world homosexuality is most likely treated as being slightly less worse than pedophilia, or maybe just as bad.

Or put another way:

a number doesn't become infinite just because you multiply it a lot.

Actually, if it continues multiplying, perpetually, long after it has passed the point where mortal means can quantify, record, or even really understand on a conceptual level, "infinite" is the only real way to describe it.

Complicating matters is the fact that DC's cosmology considers a lot of things that your model would enumerate as separate universes as NOT creating separate universes. We know that time travel doesn't automatically make a new numbered universe. We know that quantum physics works within DC universes, which means that all of the possibilities represented in the wavefunction are still considered part of the same universe.

That's a model that DC only adopted post-Crisis, largely to cut down on the number of alternate universes they would have to keep track of. There are multiple versions of Paul (Paragon, Renegade, Eros and Common Sense off the top of my head) who would claim to be from Earth 16, which I see as at least implying that the infinite model is the one in play.

If we take New 52's cosmology as an indication of the underlying behavior of the DC multiverse, then it would appear that branches that are close enough to being the same have some sense of shared identity. If this is true, then the kinds of trivial variations you describe would get lost in the broader trajectory of the universe rather than always creating new ones.

Zoat has on multiple occaisions expressed a great dislike of the New 52, and essentially declared everything associated with it to not be canon to this fic
