With This Ring (Young Justice SI) (Thread Fourteen)

You know, I honesty think you could have used "Emperor Superman, ruler of Earth" and get basically the same story without people going "Eek! Nazis!"

Now that I think about it, Superman's pod landing in June 1938 on a DC Earth that lacks any Superheroes or Supervillains and being found by the Luthors instead of the Kents...

If his ship had any usable database.... oh boy.

The left side of my lip rises in a mini-gurn.

More editorial, but considering gurn isn't popular in American maybe some context would help avoid the necessity of knowing Scots or using Google?

Suggestion being, add a few words that describe the act or the emote.

Offense not intended.

You know, I honesty think you could have used "Emperor Superman, ruler of Earth" and get basically the same story without people going "Eek! Nazis!"
Does Emperor Superman have a preexisting plot thread involving interdimensional portals to lead up to Paragon getting entangled in the Crisis of Infinite Pauls? Because I'm pretty sure that the interdimensional portals are the contribution of this story arc to the greater narrative.

So for other Fate/ fans in the thread, here's a question: How many Singularities from Fate/Grand Order do you think that current story Paragon or Renegade can solo / complete with their respective teams? And if they solve part 1 then how far do they get with EoR and the Lost Belts?

There are some very rational reasons to be hesitant - not fearful, mind you, but hesitant - of human genetic engineering. Starting with the fact that we don't yet (emphasis on yet) have a way of doing it safely and reliably. Every genetic change you make tends to cascade and far more often than not cause harmful genetic abnormalities. Maybe one in ten attempts at genetic engineering gets the result you're going for without side effects. That's fine when you're working with plants, and can get a pass a lot of the time when you're working with animals, but till we get better at not causing genetic dysfunctions while going for our intended results human genetic engineering is going to (and should) be relegated to medical necessity cases only.

And again, there are diseases bad enough that people will risk it, we will learn from that and our tech will improve.

As for attemots without sideeffects: afaik the newest Crispr variants already greatly reduce the possibility of that and precision will only go up.

"Not from my kryptonian biology."

Angelika looks around just long enough to confirm that someone is coming through, then returns her attention to the Overboy lookalike.

"Then from where?"

Kaldur sees Angelika, then looks at me and raises his eyebrows slightly. I transition over to him.

"Batman informed me that you had taken custody of our guest. He did not say that you were bringing her here."

"Bit of a complication, there. When I recovered her, I inadvertently scrubbed all of the residues that could have been used to locate her origin point."

"I imagine that her friends and family will prefer that she be alive but separated from them than that we return her body to them."

I nod. "Hopefully I'll be able to find out which types of exotic radiation were the cause of her injuries so that I can learn to just absorb those in future."

"Have you arranged for accommodation?"

"Not yet. I thought that would be a bit pessimistic. Plus, there's a slight… Problem that I probably need to make you.. and Batman, aware of."

"What is it?"

"On her Earth the Second World War went the other way."

He glances past me. "I.. see."

The Second World War wasn't really a big deal in Atlantis. With one brief exception they remained neutral throughout. It's not taught in their schools. As a result, it wasn't until the Kriegers made themselves known that Kaldur read up on the subject. It still clearly doesn't have the same resonance with him that it does the rest of us-.

M'gann knew even less about it and Kon's telepathic education covered world history in such an even-handed manner that no one atrocity stood out.

The rest of me, then.

"She's having a bit of a hard time dealing with the differences, but I'm confident that I can eventually talk her around."

"Should I be concerned?"

"I imagine that she'd prefer not to interact with you socially, but unless-."

Kaldur walks past me. "Overgirl. I am-"

She's smiling as she turns away from Kon, then her expression sort of calcifies as she sees who is talking to her.

"-Aqualad."

"Hello."

"I would like to welcome you into our home." He holds out his right hand.

The flickers of emotional arousal I see are.. a little like what I imagine Kara sees when she looks at someone's brain and tries to work out what they're thinking. A lot of things are activating, but I'm not entirely sure-.

Oh, she's gone for 'well-trained house negro'. That's… Disappointing, but at least she doesn't feel obliged to lash out.

"Thank-. You."

She takes his hand, holds it for about half a second longer than the minimum politeness would require and then lets go, straightening up slightly. Then she sees his gills.

"You are Atlantean? I did not think-. Ah, the Atlanteans I have seen before had pale skin."

Kaldur nods. "Most do. My father moved from America to Shayeris before I was born. Have you worked with Atlanteans before?"

"Yes, Underseaman is a member of the New Statesmen. They are the equivalent to your Justice League."

He's-? 'Underseaman'? I suppose it would sound better in German, but… Wallace is going to find that more than a little amusing. I'm using my ring not to smile myself. And well done to Angelika for not wiping her hand or anything. She's going for 'I am superior' rather than 'you are inferior'.

**She's a Nazi!?**

Kon and M'gann are staring at me, while Kaldur and Angelika don't react. Closed circuit it is, then. Kon and I are easier for M'gann to communicate with.

**She's a work in progress. All of the genocide that resulted from their victory happened before she was born. It would be unreasonable for us to blame her for it in the same way that it would be unreasonable for anyone to blame me for the transatlantic slave trade or M'gann for the assassination of Prelate D'rett.**

Kon blinks, then half-turns to M'gann. **Who?**

**He was assassinated by white rights extremists. And I don't think it's the same. I don't go around with a t-shirt on saying 'the Hyperclan did nothing wrong'.**

**But if you were born in a Hyperclan enclave surrounded by people who believed that the Hyperclan did nothing wrong, and you thought that as a result, should we blame you for it then?**

**Nnnnnoo.**

**Great! Because I might need your help in talking her around.**

**Oh…** Kon and M'gann glance at each other. **Kay..?**

**Tha-.**

Donner, of course!

Kon subtly shakes his head. **Who?**

"Overgirl,-" I turn to where she's giving Kaldur's questions the briefest answers she can manage. "-I think I might have someone you'd know."

She turns stiffly. "Who is that?"

"Donner. Gerri Brauer? She-."

Angelika jerks in surprise, and then beams. "Aunty Gerri?!"

"So you know her?"

"Yes, I know her." She appears to be genuinely happy. "She is a major hero on my Earth, and she was my combat instructor when Overman was busy." She restrains herself slightly. "I know that she is not the same woman, but I would still like to meet her."

"Okay. I've only spoken to her a couple of times." Back when I was tracking Danner Formula enhanciles. I think she's been talking to Arnold, but I haven't kept in touch. I'm going to assume that the National Socialists didn't get that formula on Earth 10, though I'm not sure how they missed it. "I'll phone her and ask if she's willing to meet you."

"Thank you."

I raise my left hand to my ear.

"Ring, phone Gerri Brauer."

Compliance.

"Not from my kryptonian biology."

Angelika looks around just long enough to confirm that someone is coming through, then returns her attention to the Overboy lookalike.

"Then from where?"
Danger, Orange Lantern, Danger! Change the subject, quick smart!

Kaldur sees Angelika, then looks at me and raises his eyebrows slightly. I transition over to him.

"Batman informed me that you had taken custody of our guest. He did not say that you were bringing her here."
Well, circumstances have a way of changing...

"Bit of a complication, there. When I recovered her, I inadvertently scrubbed all of the residues that could have been used to locate her origin point."

"I imagine that her friends and family will prefer that she be alive but separated from them than that we return her body to them."
Certainly, Overman would. Given known reactions of other universes where she dies, things would likely go badly.

How to put it nicely...

"What is it?"

"On her Earth the Second World War went the other way."
...Well, I suppose that works. Clear as mud if he wasn't aware of surface history...

Good to see he's diligent about briefings and research into mission-related subjects.

M'gann knew even less about it and Kon's telepathic education covered world history in such an even-handed manner that no one atrocity stood out.

The rest of me, then.
Hey, at least Rocket isn't here... That would be as fun as matter and antimatter meeting. And ideally viewed from a safe distance. Like Mars.

"She's having a bit of a hard time dealing with the differences, but I'm confident that I can eventually talk her around."

"Should I be concerned?"

"I imagine that she'd prefer not to interact with you socially, but unless-."
Dammit, OL, you should know by now, if you tell teenagers one thing...

Kaldur walks past me. "Overgirl. I am-"

She's smiling as she turns away from Kon, then her expression sort of calcifies as she sees who is talking to her.
...They immediately go and do the opposite. <sigh>

"-Aqualad."

"Hello."

"I would like to welcome you into our home." He holds out his right hand.
Please don't snub him, please don't snub him...

Well, that's about as good as you could hope for.

"Thank-. You."

She takes his hand, holds it for about half a second longer than the minimum politeness would require and then lets go, straightening up slightly. Then she sees his gills.
And not totally repulsed by touching the 'coloured man'... A little progress perhaps.

"You are Atlantean? I did not think-. Ah, the Atlanteans I have seen before had pale skin."

Kaldur nods. "Most do. My father moved from America to Shayeris before I was born. Have you worked with Atlanteans before?"
Thank Eris Wally isn't here, because...

If he weren't worried about getting his head punched off, he'd likely be snickering under his breath. And even now, Wally is probably all "My lame joke senses are tingling..."

**She's a Nazi!?**

Kon and M'gann are staring at me, while Kaldur and Angelika don't react. Closed circuit it is, then. Kon and I are easier for M'gann to communicate with.
And props for not blurting that out loud. Though given telepathy is more natural than vocalising for Martians...

**Who?**
Guessing a minor White Rights opponent...

Nice poke at the comics version's origins.

**Nnnnnoo.**

**Great! Because I might need your help in talking her around.**

**Oh…** Kon and M'gann glance at each other. **Kay..?**
I really don't think you're going to completely break her Nazism in a day, OL. Soften it maybe, but not break her faith in it.

**Tha-.**

Donner, of course!

Kon subtly shakes his head. **Who?**
Wow, he must have thought that loud for Kon to pick it up.

"Overgirl,-" I turn to where she's giving Kaldur's questions the briefest answers she can manage. "-I think I might have someone you'd know."

She turns stiffly. "Who is that?"

"Donner. Gerri Brauer? She-."
Oh, this is going to be amusing. Possibly explosive. Because Donner is affiliated with a predominantly-minority team, if it exists.

Keep that in mind, kiddo, and try not to be shocked.

Okay, folks, how likely do you think it is that she'd agree to meet a complete stranger? Much less have that meeting go well...

I raise my left hand to my ear.

"Ring, phone Gerri Brauer."

Compliance.
This is going to be fun...

Crap, what if Donner is "What, you're a what? Get the hell away from me!" I can't imagine that going over well with Overgirl at all. This could end badly, OL...

Hah! White Supremacy joke!

Get it, 'cause their White Martians!

...yeah, I'll see myself out now, don't worry.

I have a feeling that there is going to be a massive difference in personality regarding a Gerri living in a world where the Nazi's proved themselves right (not really but the winners write the history books) and Gerri in a world where the Nazi's got what they deserve.

Does Emperor Superman have a preexisting plot thread involving interdimensional portals to lead up to Paragon getting entangled in the Crisis of Infinite Pauls? Because I'm pretty sure that the interdimensional portals are the contribution of this story arc to the greater narrative.

Emperor Superboy (Not Superboy Prime but alternate Connor) was planning to Conker the multiverse after main timeline Connor ended in his universe by accident.

And you have so many ways to make portals that... whatever.

The idea of Capitalism gone wrong resonates better, because we actually can end that way, than Nazis.

Imagine if cultural values of the USA had been stuck in the 50s but they had modern tech?

If the United States had got so advanced thanks to Kryptonian tech they won WWII as soon as they entered it?

If Superman was raised by the Luthors and was named Alexander "Lex" Clarke Luthor?

If the Moon Landing happened just right after WWII. And the USA had a Moonbase by 1969?

I think there was an Elseworld were the USA government got Superman's spaceship and studied it soon after it crashed. Now add pre WWII mentality to it.

The crime of being a Nazi in The first degree. With the secondary crime of annoying me with her Nazi bullshit.
It's thoughtcrime, then.

or it will end up being given a name that is, essentially, "thing that does [whatever it does]."
"This is a flammenwerfer. It werfs flammens."

This could end badly, OL...
For the second straight night:

Ah, there's your problem. In the Imperial Plotline, character from Main Plot Dimension (who isn't the SI) arrives in Oppression Dimension. In the Overgirl Plotline, character from the Oppression Dimension arrives in Main Plot Dimension (while SI is on the planet.)

Considering Donner has a girlfriend, yes I imagine so.

For those not familiar with them, an Asian speedster who invented her own speedster formula.

Knowing Zoat's love for all things alchemical, I'm sure she recreated the Garrick formula here.

So she is a lesbian with a asian girlfriend.
This will be... entertaining:D
Though maybe she didn't invent the formula in this story but just found some notes on it and remade, or she did invent but by herself.

And yeah Zoat did make several things that were scientific in the comics magic in his story.
Captain Nazi was a genetically altered super soldier in the comics while his brother was a scientist, but in his fic Nazi is the embodiment of nazi Germany like Uncle Sam is the embodiment of America, and his brother is a wizard.

The Second World War wasn't really a big deal in Atlantis. With one brief exception they remained neutral throughout. It's not taught in their schools.
Except for that short period of time when the Allies invaded Islands owned by Venturia, causing Queen Clea to work with the Nazis and resulting in Atlantis temporarily being am Axis Power, which was technically at war with Themyscira.

He's-? 'Underseaman'? I suppose it would sound better in German,
It actually sounds much worse, since Seemann doesn't mean much more than Sailor and Under in this case would probably be translated to Unter which rather sounds like hes just a sailor of less Value than the others.

Huh. That seems like rather under-valuing a combat-trained Atlantean.

A core part of the Nazi philosophy is genocide.

I'm not normally in favour of violence, but if someone were to break a Nazi's knees I'd be sympathetic.

A few years ago, I went looking for the most interesting people I could find on Social Media.

I found a few no-shit, Mein Kamph reading, Adolf Did Nothing Wrong Nazi's.

They were much more reasonable than the Communists.

Sure, they said the Holocoust didn't happen, and their idea's about economics were, hum, shortsighted. But, they honestly didn't think genocide was part of their philosophy. Delusional? Yes. Monsters? Not so much.

Hitler and crew, back in WW2, were loonie monsters. However, there are people today who took the cover story of those long dead monsters, and beleve.

Don't hate them for being wrong.

To be fair, Captain Nazi did in fact once claim to be the embodiment of Nazism, so that's Zoat picking and choosing rather than making something up himself.

You make a fair point, but I insist we still hate them, on the grounds that I want to.

You can hate them for willful ignorance - the core tenent of Nazism. It's why calling them uneducated peasants is so fitting. I can appreciate that they believe in what the Nazis said, and buy into their belief system, but holocaust denial is a sin. Sure a lot of German people didn't know anything about it, but Nazism is a belief system - it doesn't depend on who the leaders are - you can be a Nazi and still acknowledge the Holocaust happened, and your leaders started it.

Like, I get the point of view that even if children are being overworked to death in third world countries to make shoe soles, it's not your problem and you shouldn't do something about it. You acknowledge it's happening, but where would we be without shoes? And do we really want to overwork people in our own country? We tried that back in the 18/1900s and that didn't work so well. Choose the less obvious evil - but don't deny that you are.

Actually, these names sound silly to a modern German too.

"Unterseemann" " Übermädchen"

I suppose it would have been different in 1940 or whatever.

And...at least she was sort of polite to Kaldur?

Yeah, at least Superman wasn't 'AboveGroundAndOccaisionalllyInTheAirMan'.
