TLDR there's a popular AU Lore amongst the WC Fandom, that being Cherico's. A central tenet of it is his motto: The Company Fucks Everyone. In this AU Lore, the Company that runs the WC is basically a comically evil company that's willing to screw over everyone, even their own contractors. Given how widely this AU lore has spread, it's not hard to see why more lighthearted fics don't happen, in my eyes.

I guess it's a matter of how "divinity" is more defined in that setting and it's a vague concept that keeps getting retconned in WoW. It's like the further back you go, the more things make sense, because the further back you go, the more it's like DnD. For example, around WC3 era, before you had 'Elves and Tentacle People in Space', you couldn't, as a mortal do shit to even demigods
