With This Ring (Young Justice SI) (Thread Fourteen)

I look forwards, towards sunset, seeing the full panorama expand before me rather than just what directly in front of me. I gesture towards is. "This might be old hat to you, but I've never been here before."

"Hm." He follows by gaze. "It does look nice at this time of day. Perhaps you should take a tourist brochure while you're here."

It did, yes.

...actually, that should count as a federal crime. How many strings did Bruce pull to get his waifu off...?

Did the Joker venom vine things happen in WtR? Because that might count. Bunch of different cities, though maybe not quite uniform enough of a spread to be considered "apocalyptic."

And of course there was the Sheeda.
That did happen, it was when Oh El freed Teth Adom. But it was nowhere near large enough in scale to be considered apocalyptic.

"I'm sure it's more than that."
"No, it was merely two years. And that is enough for me to be concerned when you appear next to my homeworld."
"
No, I mean, I'm sure it was more than two apocalyptic events. We just dealt with the abduction of every child on the planet before it could come to wider attention."
Never change Paul, baffle them with your honesty lol

"You started the biggest war our galaxy has seen in centuries and your planet has undergone two apocalyptic events in two years."

"
I'm sure it's more than that."

In what situation would saying something like this help your case? 🤦

If you're talking about Talia then she wasn't involved with that.

I was being snarky about the Joker, since Bruce Wayne worked fairly hard to keep Napier from being executed in Louisiana after he committed federal-tier terrorism with doom-plants imbued with his own toxins. Otherwise, he wouldn't have been stored in Belle Reeve & returned to Gotham.

"So how old are you?"

Tomar-Re's presence has lit a fire under the Xudarian Foreign Ministry, but bureaucracy can only move so quickly. The Minister is at a function and can't just disappear at my say-so, most of the senior civil servants have gone home for the evening and it's not like this happens often enough for there to be an established procedure.

"Why do you ask?"

"Given the sort of mental focus required to become a Green Lantern, I doubt that you joined the Corps as a child. And you were active when Krypton exploded, which was forty Earth-years ago."

"Ah, yes. Seventy would be fairly old for a human, wouldn't it?"

"You're seventy?"

"Seventy-eight, if I'm adjusting for the differences in year-length correctly. Late middle-age for a member of my species."

"Is a forty-year career normal for a Green Lantern? I got the impression it was usually a good deal shorter."

"A trick of statistics. I live in a peaceful Sector. Rings in Sectors with a high level of violence are.. exchanged more rapidly. Sector Seventeen, for example, had a very high turnover until Lantern Chance joined the Corps. Lantern Larvox is extremely fortunate to have him as a partner."

"I met Lantern Chance, but I don't know Lantern Larvox."

"I don't either. It is on the other side of the galaxy. Most of what Lanterns in most Sectors do is interplanetary police work. Your home Sector-. No, your homeworld may have given you the wrong idea."

"And the Reach war zone."

"That as well. Though it may interest you to know that Abin Sur was a Green Lantern for far longer than I have been."

"Have you ever thought about quitting? Going back to whatever you did before?"

"I don't think that I could. I made an effort to keep up with modern astrophysics after I got my ring, but it's been a while since I attended a lecture or read a research paper. How about you?"

"Four more years."

"Oh?"

"Not to quit, but I want to get married and… That's when NEMO thinks that the Reach will be pushed out of the Periphery. At that point I'll feel alright about reducing my hours-. And hopefully the Earth won't have re-imperilled itself too badly. I think I'll enjoy focusing on something smaller in scale."

"A four-year betrothal? That seems a little long."

I tilt my head back, rolling my eyes.

He blinks at me. "Did I say something untoward?"

"No, it's just that a lot of people have said that, including me. Unfortunately, I picked a number and she sets a lot of store in sticking to your given word. And Earth's in a bit of a mess right now."

"What happened this time?"

"Anti-Life."

His eyes glow for a moment. Then his head fronds stand on end.

"And last year it was our time travelling descendants from the far future. I'd just like to go a couple of years without something like that happening."

"I would like that for you as well, because that way those things are not happening in the closest Sector to mine." He sighs. "I assumed that Kal-El would some day want to take me to task for my failure to preserve Krypton. I did not think that anything like this would happen."

"A lot of people could have saved Krypton, and you did the best you could when you became aware of what was happening. I'm sure he sees it-"

We both hear the sound of many feet heading down the corridor outside the meeting room where they dumped us.

"-that way too."

Foreign Minister Zolan-La enters, dressed in her best party frock, a huddle of aides scurrying after her. "Green Lantern! I'm sorry it took so long to get away!"

"That's quite alright, Minister. This-" He gestures to me as the ministry crowd file in and take up their seats. "-is the Illustres of the Orange Lantern Corps."

I raise my right hand and wave. I don't get a response this quickly from governments on Earth, but I suppose that's the advantage of having a service record longer than my life to date.

The minister looks me over. "Yes, and he-." She looks me over again. "He?"

"He."

"He wants us to hold a trial for the kryptonian Dru-Zod. I thought that the kryptonians were extinct."

"They used to put their criminals in a place called the Phantom Zone. In a horrifying example of cosmic irony, all the prisoners survived while all but a handful of others died. Some were in for minor offences: a few months ago we let out a man who was in for theft. Others committed more serious crimes."

"And the people of Timaron are also not extinct."

"No. I'm not sure how many survivors there are in total; Amalak implied that it wasn't very many."

I should probably take a look at Timaron while I'm in the area; if nothing else Lantern Mother of Mercy could help with the geoscaping.

"Our sun radiates wavelengths which-."

I shake my head. "We've got radiation shields, both personal and area affecting. And we've also got gold kryptonite, which painlessly nullifies exotic kryptonian abilities. We'll be using multiple layers of both, as well as having empowered kryptonians on standby. And I'll be tagging along as well. If you're agreeing to do this, I'll collaborate on preparing the courtroom with everything it needs for the trial to happen safely."

"Good. Now: the trial itself. We have some records of the Timaron justice system, but it would be helpful if someone who was actually involved with it could be involved. Are there any such people?"

"I don't know. I'll find out… If you're agreeing to host it?"

"Yes, in principle. My only concerns are safety and authenticity."

I nod. "Would it be alright if I brought a timaronian or two here to look at venues? I'll see if there are any jurists amongst them when I pick them up."

"That will be fine. I'll assign a member of my staff to assist you when you return."

"Thank you. And thank you for getting on this so quickly."

"Justice is long overdue. Will there be room to examine General Dru-Zod's other crimes?"

"A trial under Timaron law can only really cover crimes committed on or around Timaron. And I imagine that they'll want a death sentence if he's found guilty, and it's a little hard to try someone when they're dead. What crimes are we talking about?"

"Timaron wasn't an isolated world. There were ships from several other species in the system when Dru-Zod attacked."

"In that case, I imagine so, but let me check with the Timaron delegation. Meet back here in five days?"

Aah, now we see the complication.

Everybody is going to want Zod to kneel before them...

bureaucracy can only more so

"only move"

"Is a forty-year career normal for a Green Lantern? I got the impression it was usually a good deal shorter

If I remember correctly it was mentioned that mist died around five years.

Amon Sur was a Green Lantern

Abin Sur, not Amon.

"And the people of Timaron are also not extinct."

"No. I'm not sure how many survivors there are in total; Amalak implied that it wasn't very many

And the total number may not be enough to maintain genetic diversity necessary for a healthy society.

I should probably take a look at Timaron while I'm in the area; if nothing else Lantern Mother of Mercy could help with the geoscaping

And may we ask Clark for access to the cloning chambers on the Doomsday, or have the Spider Queen help.

Granted, Amalak may be leery about help from them.

Ha, fat chance of that.

So Tomar-Re knew about two apocalypses, but not what they were? I suppose he just skimmed a summary. A little surprising given how concerned he seems to be about his proximity to Earth.

I fancy the prestige of serving as the site of such a trial would raise their credit amongst the local systems of the Sector. Which could lead to improved trade relations with neighbours, at the least.

"Why do you ask?"

"Given the sort of mental focus required to become a Green Lantern, I doubt that you joined the Corps as a child. And you were active when Krypton exploded, which was forty Earth-years ago."
There's also the matter of how long a period of his expected lifespan that service might be. If his people live for multiple centuries, then the fifty-odd years he's been an active Lantern could be like a youthful career.

"Ah, yes. Seventy would be fairly old for a human, wouldn't it?"

"You're seventy?"
I take it he's familiar enough with humans from working with 3814's Human Sector Lanterns, so he'd get the significane of such ages.

"Seventy-eight, if I'm adjusting for the differences in year-length correctly. Late middle-age for a member of my species."

"Is a forty-year career normal for a Green Lantern? I got the impression it was usually a good deal shorter."
All right, that suggests a total lifespan closer to a century and a half or so. He could retire in a couple of decades with high honours from both OA and Xudar and have a long, happy old age.

Ah, I guess some Lanterns do have it easier than others. I suppose the Kryptonians left the place fairly peaceful after they retreated to their homeworld, if only by everyone else still feeling a bit worn-out of galactic war.

"I met Lantern Chance, but I don't know Lantern Larvox."

"I don't either. It is on the other side of the galaxy. Most of what Lanterns in most Sectors do is interplanetary police work. Your home Sector-. No, your homeworld may have given you the wrong idea."
Well, Earth is that bullshit. When Earth's Lanterns talk to other Greenies, there's probably a lot of shocked disbelief until they get shown the combat logs.

"And the Reach war zone."

"That as well. Though it may interest you to know that Abin Sur was a Green Lantern for far longer than I have been."
Another case of 'How long do his people live' for sure. Although Abin survived because he was just that damn good.

"Have you ever thought about quitting? Going back to whatever you did before?"

"I don't think that I could. I made an effort to keep up with modern astrophysics after I got my ring, but it's been a while since I attended a lecture or read a research paper. How about you?"
Heck of a career swerve mind. Astrophysicist to Space Cop. Although it does explain how he knew a way to try and fix Krypton's core meltdown. If he was still a relative rookie at the time, that failure has probably driven him a long way.

"Four more years."

"Oh?"
Admittedly, we know he's not retiring by then. Why give up a Ring that's basically part of his whole identity at this point?

"Not to quit, but I want to get married and… That's when NEMO thinks that the Reach will be pushed out of the Periphery. At that point I'll feel alright about reducing my hours-. And hopefully the Earth won't have re-imperilled itself too badly. I think I'll enjoy focusing on something smaller in scale."
Slim hope of that, OL, you know that. Earth is a trouble magnet, as are you.

"A four-year betrothal? That seems a little long."

I tilt my head back, rolling my eyes.

He blinks at me. "Did I say something untoward?"
Some folks have taken longer than that to finalise a marriage. Budget often tends to play a part. For instance, graduating university and getting somewhat out of debt before tying the knot.

"No, it's just that a lot of people have said that, including me. Unfortunately, I picked a number and she sets a lot of store in sticking to your given word. And Earth's in a bit of a mess right now."
Plus, it's convenient for the Author that neither OL nor Jade are tied down that way.

"What happened this time?"

"Anti-Life."

His eyes glow for a moment. Then his head fronds stand on end.
Yeah, that's about the reaction you'd expect.

"And last year it was our time travelling descendants from the far future. I'd just like to go a couple of years without something like that happening."
Again, not happening. Though hopefully the next 'summer event' is something silly like 'JLApe' rather than 'Identity Crisis'.

"I would like that for you as well, because that way those things are not happening in the closest Sector to mine." He sighs. "I assumed that Kal-El would some day want to take me to task for my failure to preserve Krypton. I did not think that anything like this would happen."
Ehhh... I guess I was right about him feeling like Krypton was his Greatest Failure, but Clark isn't that sort of guy.

"A lot of people could have saved Krypton, and you did the best you could when you became aware of what was happening. I'm sure he sees it-"

We both hear the sound of many feet heading down the corridor outside the meeting room where they dumped us.
Ah, looks like the minister has managed to extricate themself from their event. Hopefully without offending too many people.

"-that way too."

Foreign Minister Zolan-La enters, dressed in her best party frock, a huddle of aides scurrying after her. "Green Lantern! I'm sorry it took so long to get away!"
Well, now. I'm sure their working relationship is totally professional. 😏

And Earth's governments are still kind of recovering from the Anti-Life disaster. And don't really have the procedures in place for tacit cooperation with 'alien paramilitary officers' outside of 'treat them like a superhero'.

The minister looks me over. "Yes, and he-." She looks me over again. "He?"

"He."
Nice of her to check. I suppose she isn't exactly aware of human sexual dimorphism, and you can't always make guesses based on your own species.

To be fair, Ak-Var got unlucky at a time when the government was upping their usage of the Zone. Any other time, he probably would just have been imprisoned more conventionally.

"And the people of Timaron are also not extinct."

"No. I'm not sure how many survivors there are in total; Amalak implied that it wasn't very many."
Which may mean his people are facing extinction anyway due to unviable breeding numbers. It takes humans, what, about a hundred thousand to ensure a minimum level of genetic diversity? If less than that were off-world or escaped the glassing...

I should probably take a look at Timaron while I'm in the area; if nothing else Lantern Mother of Mercy could help with the geoscaping.

"Our sun radiates wavelengths which-."
I get the feeling Mother of Mercy is in high demand for that sort of work. Though to be fair, she can do it surprisingly quickly.

That may sound excessively paranoid, but given that an empowered Kryptonian is basically a walking natural disaster if they decide to do some damage... Being prepared is very smart.

"Good. Now: the trial itself. We have some records of the Timaron justice system, but it would be helpful if someone who was actually involved with it could be involved. Are there any such people?"
Given it's been fifty years, they'd have retired some time ago.

"I don't know. I'll find out… If you're agreeing to host it?"

"Yes, in principle. My only concerns are safety and authenticity."
Really, Xudar's part is pretty much going to be providing the courtroom and catering. 😏

I nod. "Would it be alright if I brought a timaronian or two here to look at venues? I'll see if there are any jurists amongst them when I pick them up."

"That will be fine. I'll assign a member of my staff to assist you when you return."
Definitely a good idea to find out if their system even uses a jury method. The trial could easily be a military-style tribunal with an odd number of presiding judges (to avoid voting deadlocks...)

"Thank you. And thank you for getting on this so quickly."

"Justice is long overdue. Will there be room to examine General Dru-Zod's other crimes?"
...Other crimes? Oh, dear. This is about to get complicated, isn't it?

"A trial under Timaron law can only really cover crimes committed on or around Timaron. And I imagine that they'll want a death sentence if he's found guilty, and it's a little hard to try someone when they're dead. What crimes are we talking about?"
To be fair to him, he's only really heard about General Zod's actions from a Timaronian, who's pretty ticked about his homeworld being glassed, and Kryptonian sources, whose databases are prone to dismissing alien concerns out of hand...

"Timaron wasn't an isolated world. There were ships from several other species in the system when Dru-Zod attacked."

"In that case, I imagine so, but let me check with the Timaron delegation. Meet back here in five days?"
Ah, witnesses. Who will probably have a vested desire to see Zod hang, so to speak.

Hopefully they don't end up with a dozen system governments all looking to have a say in the trial, but given the name of the episode... I fear those hopes are in vain. Because if Zod bombarded one world, they'd have expected he could come after others...

"only move"
Abin Sur, not Amon.
Thank you, corrected.
And may we ask Clark for access to the cloning chambers on the Doomsday
The Doomsday is a warship. It doesn't have cloning chambers.
Thank you, corrected.
Well, now. I'm sure their working relationship is totally professional. 😏
As stated yesterday, she was at an official function.

I think Eradicator Superman mentioned that he was going to use them to resurrect the Kryptonian race.

Or did Har-Zod station have them.
Neither, but Krypton had a long history of using cloning technology. It wouldn't take the Eradicators all that long to build them. The SI offered existing plants in exchange for the Eradicator Program moderating its position, which wouldn't make sense if it already had them.

Did the GLC/Guardians relax restrictions on what info from Earth and on the anti-life equation were, since that's now been resolved, or was it only available to veterans?

Also, been meaning to ask for a while, was Earth 12 Peter Wynne around/caught up in the 2-part JL episode Legends?

It's got a travel advisory, but the ban has been lifted.

No. He did briefly see if it would be possible to go back to help people/acquire technology, but it was prohibitively difficult.

I know this is out of nowhere but, what was the name of that London shaman guy who loves trains/subways, is connected deeply to the city and didn't like that Dolem Gates would be replacing his favorite transportation? He like moved all the cameras in the city to look at Paul once?
