Are we getting anything but remove Essence limit and qualify for CMA for "free"?

Because if we aren't getting anything else for "free" (sunk research time), then I'm going to suggest:

Ritual: Sharing the sunlight
Swap body fluids inside a ritual circle, pay 1 temporary willpower, and grant the receiver the removing of Essence limit and qualifications for CMA.

Wish it was that easy. Martial arts in Exalted are more than just combat styles, they are about using your essence in ways that emulate the concepts the martial art is base on. A practitioner of the Fire Dragon style shapes his essence in ways that are always reminiscent of how the actual Dragon of Fire, Heshiesh. When Issei uses the Solar Hero style, every move he makes harkens back to the Unconquered Son.

That is something that most mortal cannot achieve without a fundamental alteration to their soul, i.e exaltation, enlightenment rituals, becoming a Spirit, etc.

Though, i do have a idea for the particular vector for our system. In some dragon lore, people are empowered by taking a piece of a dragon into themselves, like in the movie Dragonheart. In DnD, i seem to recall a dragon-centered prestige class whose requirement was that you had to have a dragon place one of their scales into your body, granting you several boons.

so why not do the same? our pieces would be shaped like dragon pieces, each with a passive benefit themed after it; giving it the variety that some people seem to crave, while avoiding the complexity and not having a thematic hard limit, like that Tarot Cards or Chess pieces.

I think that the replacements should, beside unlocking Essence and learn CMA, grant the ability to gain Epic/Mega Attributes, as well as learn Sorcery, and extend lifespans to that of a member of the Devil Race (roughly 10k years IIRC.)
That's the minimum I would suggest.

Any interesting mutations that should be included?
Speed Healing?
Regenerate lost limbs?
 
Hm... well, some features we might want to consider for our empowerment pieces;

- granting the recipient additional Favored Abilities
- alternatively, granting the recipient Caste Abilities

Means our allies would have an easier time expanding their capabilities in areas that interest them and generally becoming more skilled. Also means easier access to Charms (if they're based on Abilities).

- Celestial Tier Sorcery

Kind of iffy on that one. Theoretically it might be possible; some artifacts allow a DB to use Celestial-tier sorcery, and with the Essence-cap raised to 5 Mortals would be able to fulfill the Essence requirements.

- Exalted Health/Healing

Stuff like being able to basically stem bleeding with a thought, soak Lethal damage with half stamina, resist disease and poison, etc. Shouldn't be too difficult, given there's already a Mutation that does that.

- Increased Lifespan

More cosmetic, to be honest, but I figure that this would be a concern for Ise. He wouldn't want his friends and lovers die off from old age thousands of years before he does, for example.

- Some other secondary benefits normally provided by Exaltation

Nothing that immediately jumps out at me, but there's probably stuff I'm overlooking. Virtue Channels? Willpower-related stuff?
 
I was thinking that Issei's Pieces would add something that Solar Half-Caste would not have. First of all, what does Solar Half-Caste status do exactly?
 
I like the crystal ball idea, have the person getting it push it into their bodies, one light show later boom Solar Half Caste. I would like to see them recieving a dot in Appearance though, because Issei is that vain.

Creating a Half-Caste

A Solar Exalt who impregnates or is impregnated by a mortal partner makes rolls Essence against Difficulty 3. If the roll succeeds, the child produced will be a Half-Caste. The Exalted parent immediately loses a point of permanent Willpower and gains the knowledge of the child's nature. This is not a voluntary effect (though it might be argued that the choice not to employ contraceptives constitutes acceptance of all possible consequence). Relations with beings who could not recieve a Solar Exaltation (including other Exalts) do not produce Half-Castes.

Though they share the same shards as the Solar Exalted, Abyssal and Infernal Exalts do not produce Half-Castes… where the Unconquered Sun left his shards free by design, the Yozi and Neverborn broke this rule in many small ways, and it is their essence which suffuses the reproduction of their Exalts. Offspring of the Abyssal Exalted will always be Ghost-blooded; offspring of the Infernal Exalted will always be Demon-blooded, as if sired by a lesser demon in the hierarchy of their patron Yozi.

I have to admit I didn't read through the debates and discussions in-between updates so I'm not sure what sorts of decisions or plans were made then.

I'd be tempted to buy up Investigation and/or Awareness, both because they help us in the current situation, and because they could/should be pretty handy in general, while also being pretty affordable (2xp per dot), but more input from longer-time players would probably be rather handy, here.
Let's see what kind of XP plans I can dig up.
To attract allies you want Presence and Performance. 2E Socialize is used more for really large group social events, ranging from parties to shaping cultures on a nation-wide scale. Solar Socialize is very very dangerous stuff for Issei to be screwing around with, lots of unintended consequences are pretty much inevitable even if he limits the scale to, say, the population of Kuoh Academy.


I see some support for teaching people how to do things. The way to get really good at this is to buy up two Lore excellencies and Harmonious Academic Methodology and Legendary Scholar Curriculum OR invest in War and go for Tiger Warrior Training and Legendary Warrior Curriculum. Those are the big training charms, but Tiger Warrior Training is more suited for training a military unit, not a class of martial artists, and you need HAM to teach non-martial skills. Alternatively, we could delve into 3E Lore and unlock all kinds of neat tricks, like the charm that lets you earn bonus EXP for teaching people or the essence-sharing charms that turn Issei into a giant power plant feeding motes to his allies.

My main interest right now is beefing up our defenses in preparation for Kokabiel and whatever he brings with him, but apart from that I would suggest some investment in Investigation, such as Judge's Ear Technique. That one Integrity charm that allows other people to figure out that you're being mind-controlled when the Great Curse is in play is a high priority too.

Once we know for sure where they stand in the power scale, we can give then greater autonomy. And of course, spending time with five beautiful girls.

In order to remind people of argument and ideas made centuries ago, I'll go find those too.
Tarot card Arcana, FSN serevent cards, RPG style classes and other ideas were discussed.
some name ideas for that and I'm going to refer to the exaltation as shards for this it make it easy on me.

Warrior Shards to represent the Maiden of Battle. They would look like Red crystals
Shadow shards to represent the maiden of Secrets. They would look like dark green crystals
Traveler Shards to represent the Maiden of Journeys. They would look like yellow crystals
Lover Shards to represent the Maiden of Serenity. They would look like azure crystals
Void Shards to represent the Maiden of Endings. They would look like violet crystals
Okay, this is a really interesting idea.

I mainly like this because its something already inside the Quest and thus makes it less work for Alex (hopefully) while not having to be something that needs a lot of adaptation to fit into it either.

There was another idea about how this would ultimately be an artifact made of/from/by Solar Essence and thus should reflect a striving for Excellence/Perfection.

Taking these together... I like the idea. What one needs to remember about our followers is that mortals run off of Specialty dots instead of General Dots like we do. (They get specialties before general dots).

The artifacts should revolve around imitating an Exaltation (which even as an imitation are trying to imitate a mother-fucking Exaltation, so they're bullshit. Just not as much bullshit.)

Thus I think they should focus on allowing people to get general dots, having caste and favored abilities, getting Excellencies, and considering the world we're in... probably Epic Attributes. Or Abilities come to think of it.

Stepping back and looking at it, bringing something like the Servant Class system (which I favored), Arcana, or the Zodiac seems like it could be messy to make it fit.

The main problem I have is I don't know what the arrangement for the Ability/Caste system for the Sidereals looks like, how their Excellency functions (being Solar forged they might just use ours anyway), or their Charms. Which they wouldn't actually be able to use, and probably shouldn't with how they need the Loom and all, but why not try imitating some. If only to pay homage to the Maidens beyond Image and Ability/Caste arrangement.

I've got an idea, i'm going to post it here for approval. I took the zodiac signs and divided them based on descriptions of common traits found here (scroll down a bit, there's a table.)

The master piece would be called the Zodiac piece (Equivalent of king)

Taurus, Capricorn, Scorpio, for enhanced strength and durability (equivalent of rooks)

Gemini, Cancer, Virgo, for magic (equivalent of bishops)

Pisces, Aries, Leo, for speed (equivalent of knights)

Aquarius, Sagittarius, Libra, for adaptability (equivalent of pawns

How's that? And there's no queen piece so we don't have to feel guilty as players for "favoring" one character, (also because i couldn't think of a zodiac symbol fitting to be a queen piece) the pieces would be like small golden crystals with the symbols floating in the middle made of silver, kind of like a bug trapped in amber.
Blank Tarot cards. Have them shift to fit the personality of the person receiving them. They give different boosts, depending on the Arcana (the receiver's personality).

Besides, there's no reason that we would have to restrict ourselves to only one of each Arcana, is there? We're just stealing the way that the Evil Pieces boost people. Even if we are restricted, we can just add the Minor Arcana. I sincerely doubt that 78 cards would be too little.
Then there's the whole 'Set' argument. I'm not against quantity, but we can't exactly get into a rating game with a 100 followers, can we?

I'm favorable to an extended servant set:

Saber, Lancer, Shielder - Knight classes, buff for STR, AGI, END respectively (or whatever are the Exalted counterparts)

Berserker (this one goes for Shougo, does have that mad enhancement, but does not hinder skilled brawler), Avenger (for Yang, power goes up with damage taken)

Archer, Launcher, Caster - Accuracy, Artillery, and Special effects.

Enchantress (buffer), Temptress (debuffer), Assassin, Ruler (Battleground Control, Eiko) - Support classes.

Of course we can have more than one, there's no problem with that.

Servant system is too limited, presumably we want more than seven harem girls and they don't all fit neatly into one of those classes. Same goes for tarot cards. Dunno anything about Go. Maybe fairy chess pieces? Depends on whether we're limited to a single set of pieces or not.

Pactio-like abilities are most favorable to me simply because there's no limit to the number of pactio bonds you can make and each one is custom-tailored to the partner. No need to force her into a role she might not fit when you can homebrew a new role for her on the spot.

Drawing inspiration from different sources is great, but it's frankly pointless to try to lock in on a preexisting design too strongly. Let's grab some good ideas from them all and patch them together. I've outlined my thoughts on the various systems below, followed by a detailed new suggestion.

My thoughts:

The Servant Class Card System excels because it allows us to create role-specific buffs and such. Its weakness is that it leaves little room for considering the skills of the individual using the Card, and thus can become limiting...especially if some of our chosen have natural talents that are to broad to synergize well with any particular Class. Recall that this is an important issue in Fate: Servants, without a Class, are far more powerful than they are with one. Cu, for example, loses access to the bulk of his Rune Magic due to his Lancer Class.

The Pactio System excels at personalization. It builds directly off the Minister/Ministra's existing talents and personality, giving them a weapon ideal for them. It also offers telepathy, which is hugely valuable on the battlefield. On the downside, it isn't intended to be used by a group, and thus only doesn't offer much support for mutual support between Ministra. It also has a rather troublesome invocation ritual.

The proposed Tarot system strikes a better balance, allowing beneficiaries a far larger variety of Archetypes/Arcana to draw upon. It also fits the Solar mentality well, due to Tarot's narrative of continuous and unending growth.

...a Go based system makes little sense to me, considering the generic nature of the pieces, but I don't know much about the deeper aspects of the game.

Fairy Chess...I'm not knowledgeable about it. It sounds to similar to the Evil Pieces, but I can't say for certain.

Classic RPG based parallels the "game pieces" theme of the existing Pieces: Chess Pieces, Playing Cards, RPG Characters. Beyond the thematic, however, it's really nothing special. It does match up well with the Exalted Castes and Ability sets, but that's it.

Tarot-Themed Composite System

So, what I'm thinking is that we use the Tarot Theme, drawing upon the Servant System for the core features of each Arcana, and add automatic personalization (based on the Pactio system)...

Each person would have a single Tarot Card of their own. That card analyzes their spiritual, physical, and mental traits and grants them access to whichever Arcana they are compatible with (potentially just 1, or possibly all that they are suited to). If they have access to more than one, they can switch between them by some means.

Aside from the powers of the Arcana, the Card also establishes a certain set of core benefits, unique to each user: An Artifact (only accessible while using the Card) based on their personal skills), and some form of permanent increase to the Ability and Attribute they are best with. Yang, for example, would likely receive a pair of Artifact Gauntlets, Dot(s) in Martial Arts, and either Dot(s) in Strength or Epic Strength. She would have access to these regardless of her current Arcana, and the Gauntlets would be usable regardless of Arcana (so, no matter what Arcana she's using, she's not going to get stuck with a sword or something).

I'd also recommend casual telepathy between all members of the team while the Card is active.


Obviously, details aren't all hammered out, and Alexander would have to help balance things, but...that's my suggestion.
Revised proposal:
  • Removes essence limits, and qualifies them for CMA
  • When activated it does
    • Telepathy between all activated users and the master
    • Grants ox-body with 1 extra dot of zero penalty health
    • Enables one use of durability of oak for the scene
  • Allows summoning and dismissal of an artifact bound to the receiver (and costumes)
  • Allows teleportation of the receiver once a scene
  • Specifies a virtue which is the character's primary virtue (does not give them an extra dot)
  • Grants or enhances an elemental affinity
Looking for further criticism. Feel free to use this as a basis of other proposals as well.

Other possible tweaks.
  • Gives a dot in one attribute
  • Makes one skill favored

-Make possible to learn Celestial Martial Arts.
-Make possible to... other stuff, what Bright think is possible to create.

No system, identical balls for everyone.

  • Allow aging to peak condition, and then hold them there (is there a lifespan, even devils and angels seem to have a life span, and Exalted are explicitly limited)
  • Enhance their learning ability: to Solar standard?
  • Give them everything (I think this is sort of boring in some ways, but quite pragmatic anyway)

I stand by my suggestion for our own Evil pieces. The Minichate Tarot deck gives us the most variety of things, it offers us regular tarot cards, the zodiac, and the 4 elements all in one convenient form.
 
I think a dragon Statue or shards may be a good idea for Issei Pieces.

I think we should include access to Solar Charms. That would be the best part. All the other stuff seems like extra, but Charms would give them a huge boost.

Eh. Too big of a boost if you ask me. The charms are what makes Solar a Solar - handing access around wouldn't make mini-Solars, it would make full on Solars. Maybe exelencies, but the rest should stay with what a Exalt would normally be able to grant with Charms. How about granting ability to create/enhancing the ability to develop personal charms? Kind like spirit charms, based on personal abilities/themes and a bit of solar influence?
 
As Solar Half-Castes they already get access to the "light" version of Solar Charms, IIRC.

I was thinking I was partial to having gold angels wings, just for coolness factor. The wings will allow for extra mobility and are hardly an inconvenience. At the very worst, it would just be a completely useless feature, similar to how Issei never used his Devil Wings for flight in the anime (at least from what I watched).

I do think that we should ask the people receiving these powers what kind of traits they would want before giving them something that makes them into mutants.

Devils and Angels don't really use their wings its more of a symbol of status then anything.

Hmm... good point. Maybe we should make them have unique wings? To symbolize that they are a part of our team, rather than having people confuse them for Seraphim. Of course, Mittelt would be able to keep the Golden Wings from her Half-Caste status (after all, we see in canon that Akeno can summon fallen angel wings despite being a reincarnated devil), so she can troll other angels with them.

Creating a pactio is a sorcerous ritual. Like all such rituals, it has prerequisites.

Prerequisites:
  • Essence 4
  • Occult 4
  • Craft 3
Pactio Creation:
  • Cost: 5 motes, 1 (temporary) willpower
  • Duration: Permanent
Ritual:

The ritual is consummated in a ritual circle. It requires the swapping of body fluids. Exchanging blood works just as well as sex.

Effects:
  • Removes the essence limits and qualifies the receiver for CMA
  • Grants solar training times for attributes and skills
  • Makes the receiver age like a solar does (functionally unaging past prime until for the duration of a solar lifespan, unless a solar lifespan is shorter than their natural lifespan, then use the larger number)
  • Specify an attribute chosen at creation
  • Specify a skill chosen at creation, treat this skill as favored for purposes of training
  • Store up to the master's Essence score in artifacts that have been attuned to the receiver
  • Store up to the master's Essence score in separate outfits
  • If the master achieves Essence 5, he may contract spirits to maintain the outfits so that they are resummoned clean and whole
  • Creates a pactio card, the features on the face of the card include
    • A picture of the receiver in the first stored outfit equipped with the first artifact
    • The receiver's name
    • A title composed of the chosen attribute and skill (i.e. Strong Sailor, Enduring Survivalist, etc.)
  • Once a scene the receiver can activate the pactio, which does the following
    • Cost: 1 (temporary) willpower
    • Duration: 1 scene
    • Increases the specified attribute by the difference in Essence score between master and receiver. (If the receiver's Essence score is equal or higher, there is no benefit granted.)
    • Grants telepathy to the master and all other activated pactios that belong to the same master
    • Optionally summons an outfit and an artifact
    • Allows access by the receiver to the master's reflexive charms or known instant effects a number of times equal to the receiver's Essence score (they are basically channeling their master). The receiver must pay any applicable cost. The charms must be chosen at activation time.
  • Once a scene the master can activate the pactio, which does the following:
    • Cost: 1 mote
    • Duration: 1 scene
    • Grants telepathy from the master to the receiver (add flavor that the receiver can choose to decline if it bothers you)
    • Grants a temporary purchase of Ox Body (of any type) to the receiver (it might make sense to scale this with master's or receiver's essence)
    • For the price of a reflexive or an instant plus one additional mote, invoke the reflexive as if the receiver invoked it
    • The receiver can be summoned to the master once per activation

My proposal does not create artifacts, it just grants storage for them. There is an artifact, like the pieces would be artifacts, but it isn't significantly different from the existence of the pieces themselves.

Interesting concept, wasprider, but we are talking about our Evil Pieces project. The whole Pactio thing should come later.

I still say we should go to our clan and ask them about what kind of power-ups they would want. Questions like "would you like to have dragon wings that allow you to fly?" or "would like to have superior healing?"

I say that our Solar Pieces should give our followers golden dragon wings, distinct from devil or angel wings, to mark them as a part of our group.

I'll bullshit and say it's from this universe's magic. :p

I just want to see what's acceptable and what isn't. This isn't a pure Exalted game, and even if it is rejected, knowing what's OK and what's not, will help other people craft proposals. The boosts and how they work are interesting proposals, and I want to see if they're OK as well.

I'm fairly sure a large number of the regular voters have expressed dissatisfaction with the concept of a Pactio system. So this is just a trial balloon that hopefully other people can work from and build up.
