Governor's Gambit - Star Wars SI into Imperial Governor

.
  1. Allegiance: While I already more or less have a plan for how the MC will steer the Minda system allegiance wise(Empire/Rebel/Republic/Pentastar/Independent, etc…) I want to know what direction you think he should lean and why. Anything from moral arguments to pushing profit margins, who should he side with, and why?
As long as mc won't join the rebels, I'm fine with other choices, there's no benefits only demerits with them.

This is pretty preachy and even cringe for a trooper. A trooper would care much more about his own experience than whether the people love the Empire. He would care about his training, equipment, his buddies, and those he works with. The civvies would be the last thing he would think of.
Honestly, it depends on the quality of the brainwashing he went through, it's been pretty bluntly stated and implied across several EU books that some imperial stormtroopers academies are orders of magnitude better at their job than others. And implied that on planets with strong military culture, local military academies are used to train stormtroopers with their own variants of education.

So if he was from one of those planets, he wouldn't have gone through the same brainwashing and indoctrination as some of the more purpose built stormtrooper academies, and could actually feel or think of protecting civilians.

No, that still doesn't work IMHO.

I just assumed that since the galaxy is so old, and full of megacorporations ( many having effective monopolies in thousands of star systems despite only controling a percentage of galactic market shares of their industry) most of the industries should have reached a level of standardisation where all of their tech can interlock, or outright having each megacorporation produce entire stations with all equipment to get sold in singular (small/medium/large population) "colony start up" packages. This would include prebuilt transportable factories, refineries, mining stations or any colony startup tech really.

As for the point on hiring and droids, we know there are countless specialisations for civilian grade droids, but that's about it with no real actual instances that i know of to show their quality. So your point is completely fair in that aspect. Especially for such businesses on an outer rim agri world would be outright atrocious and unlikely unless the company had preexisting contacts within the industry nearby, which isn't impossible, but is still unlikely, unless the rebel cells pulled some strings to get some experts there explicitly to help them, which while possible, I find unlikely.

Also I honestly thought the first games would just be ports over from holotable games but in 2d instead of 3d hologram format, kind of like that game c3p0 and Chewbacca played in the first movie, or games like pong that should be, given their tech level, absurdly easy to make in the star wars galaxy by most droids with some programming package.

Another potential area of improvement - different gunners have no idea what the others are shooting at. It's entirely possible for them to all accidentally target the same ship and leave another one without any attackers.
Ehh... sorta?

The way Star Wars Shielding works is that the Gunners want to focus on the same Ship to knock down and eliminate the Ship ASAP. Spreading fire works on small ships like fighters but on a freighter you want to essentially focus fire.

His reference was the fact that another turbolaser finally blew up the target so he could switch to another.

This is pretty preachy and even cringe for a trooper. A trooper would care much more about his own experience than whether the people love the Empire. He would care about his training, equipment, his buddies, and those he works with. The civvies would be the last thing he would think of.
Lorewise due to Propaganda and the fact that the Clone Wars just ended with a broken economy a lot of Troopers do join out of a genuine belief in the "Ideals of the Empire"

This was also the fact that this trooper knows the fact that the Empire is a politicized asshole paradise and was personally a victim of such politics before. He is just happy that this one actually walks the talk. He was more baffled than preachy I think.

So I'm going to guess that the commander of the Arquietens is the MC's older sister Zix the Imperial Intelligence agent. It's not the oldest sister commanding an ISD, nor the fighter pilot working under Thrawn. That's my guess anyway.

TftC!

I would expect the opposite - large corporations have their own requirements and the ability to build to their own specs. They don't need to buy parts from a single factory (like TSMC for most CPUs, Samsung for most screens, etc.), and if they do, they are large enough to demand their own custom version.

For example, Apple is big enough to order their own silicon and have it be to their own specification. Such large companies also have a reason to lock in their products so that to repair them you would need to buy a (usually overpriced) part from them, pay their repair center, or buy a new replacement product from them. That's a huge problem with electronics and all sorts of products right now. Once again, Apple is an example of this - some of their components have built-in cryptographic keys to ensure you can't just take a screen from one iPhone and plug it into another. You have to unsolder a specific chip from the donor iPhone that has the key stored in it and transplant it to the second phone together with the screen.

Also, if they could produce a colony package of some sort, it would be a lot more expensive than building much of the stuff locally. The modularity and portability would come with a price and likely some trade-offs. Shipping it would also add to the cost.

I am not talking about games - I am talking about the OS, hardware drivers, and UI. Even if you are taking off-the-shelf components and using something open source like Linux, you still need to spend a bunch of time getting everything to work together. Plus there would likely be no similar user interface system so that needs to be built from scratch. Unless the MC takes an existing almost identical product and just rebrands it (kind-of like Nintendo took the Nvidia Shield tablet and repackaged it as the Switch, though with their own software), they will need to do a lot of work.

This was also the fact that this trooper knows the fact that the Empire is a politicized asshole paradise and was personally a victim of such politics before. He is just happy that this one actually walks the talk. He was more baffled than preachy I think.
So if he was from one of those planets, he wouldn't have gone through the same brainwashing and indoctrination as some of the more purpose built stormtrooper academies, and could actually feel or think of protecting civilians.

I am just giving my own subjective opinion on what I read - I thought it was very blase and cringe. Maybe if we got more of a history of the trooper, with him becoming depressed by what he saw on other planets then this would have made more sense. Although I still think that this could have been expressed better - at the very least we should have been shown how he feels instead of getting a description of what we already saw.

Combat droids were hilariously illegal in the Empire.
To the point of BDZ an entire planet when they learnt they kept building those in there. At least in the old EU.
Anyway, I suppose nobody cares about the ass of nowhere, where they are.

His gun turret swiveled almost violently as he tracked the YT-1930 that seemed to be made more of rust than actual armor plating.
That's kinda impressive, because that model was pretty new during the Empire, not as new as Dash Rendar's, but not really that old... so they probably made quite the use of that ship. Till now, of course.

Concerning future goals: 1. preparation: strengthening the system and look for outside resources. Hypori, Wayland, Pantolomin and Rothana are places he should visit at different points in time. Furthermore sending scouts to old Seppi sectors could be useful. Following the Russian ff Grand Admiral may be useful for gathering ress.
2. Politics: the smartest short term play would be, to become a nominal part of the remnants for now, but trying to form an unofficial nap with the Rebels. Long term independent empire is the way to go.

This is a MUCH more likely and productive area of improvement than stormtrooper helmets. First of all, helmets would likely require new hardware and software, there would need to be improved usability, training etc. Here everything is already remote controlled - you could just bolt on a computer (or do a software update) and the targeting will be much better and more accurate than what is possible for a human. Or just reprogram a droid. This system is begging to be automated, and the development time for it should be much faster since it's a simpler task than improving an already advanced product.

It's a running theme in Star Wars lore that everyone has tried this solution repeatedly, but it just doesn't work. Droid or computer-controlled gunnery ends up being predictable and relatively easily-countered by experienced pilots. I know that's not how it works irl, but in the Star Wars setting there is a reason why everyone still uses living gunners. Only factions that are going for cheap mass-production like the CIS use droid gunners, though they pay for it in reduced effectiveness because of that.

Firstly, Apple is evil ... Samsung too, just generally speaking

but on the topic, apple and Samsung are bad examples as they have like 15%of the phone markets each, meanwhile there would be corporations in the SW galaxy that would be considered massive in their fields whilst having less than 1% of the global(galactic) market share. That's just what we can expect from a galactic scale nation and just the cost of being a galaxy of tens of thousands of settled planets and hundreds of thousands of minor colonies, if not millions.

and while you are right about how apple and Samsung purposefully program their tech to be incompatible while it physically is still quite compatible, (though thankfully there are attempts to make this practice entirely illegal in the EU at least) it doesn't mean that every company in star wars does this, or that explicitly colony making packages would be able to put such tech in. In fact I could see such packages being explicitly marketed to be able to work with all galactic standard ports, power generation facilities, ect.

I mean I'm sure if a colony is owned by a corporation, they will use that kind of trick, but this is an imperial colony world that is explicitly not owned by such a Company, or as far as I'm remembering, no such company has yet been named.

For all we know he is using the SW equivalent of Nokia for his suppliers of the mining colony start up packages.

Also, if they could produce a colony package of some sort, it would be a lot more expensive than building much of the stuff locally. The modularity and portability would come with a price and likely some trade-offs. Shipping it would also add to the cost.

Ok, building the stuff locally (on a minor farming world with less than a million people) is in no way, shape or form more economical than having corporation that has economies of scale on a galactic level/market doing it. This is in regards to factories, mining on stations and refineries. Obviously the modularity would come at the cost of it having a lower service life than a non modular design, but star wars tech is insanely durable and longlasting compared to our own. So this wouldn't even be an issue for at least afew years, and he is only caring about his 2 year deadline right now.

The top is especially true for any form of space station or space habitat for the miners in the asteroid belt.

Shipping is honestly a minor cost for them considering the size of the acclimator and their new trade ships and not having to hire a cargo hauler to go to the end of nowhere to pick up the packages from the nearest factory or storage facility (which pretty much everyone in those industries would presumably have somewhere nearby for supplying the colonies, mabie in the mid rim or mabie even having one storage point per each major sector of space).

This argument makes no sense, in star wars galactic civilization existed for something like 25k years, they got the essentials standarised for long ass time, good luck for any company trying to make cash by selling something not compatible with them.

It could be cool if a side effect of this is Minda is seen as the El Dorado of the Outer Rim by pirates and other scum.

They wouldn't fight so fiercely if there wasn't something there to protect!

If this is who I think it is then the family must have picked up the habit of ball throwing when bored from their mother. I say mother because not much is currently know about the father or maybe thats how they got together, ball chuckling until they both hit each other. The whole family are ball people.
You know you gave me an idea for an Omake. Thanks.

Omake-4 New
Omake 4:

Executor of Emperor Palpatine's Will, "All are present and accounted for the reading of the late Emperor's Will on this day 4ABY." (I won't make future scholars read the strange language known as legalese, so this will be covering the main points.)

Article 1: I grant my slightly used Empire to my son, Steven Palpatine, Jr., who has been raised under the false name Las Mola by his mother, Jir Mola. This was for your protection against my enemies. All the security reports I have read have had no major issues with his governorship. As such, I have no issue granting him more responsibilities due to his dedication to the lives and well being of his people, like me.

Article 2: I hereby grant my great friend and commander of the Imperial Military, Darth Vader Skywalker and his family, Luke and Leia, his retirement planet Naboo.

Article 3: I hereby promote Grand Admiral Thrawn as commander of my son's military forces and empower him to ensure the stability and security of his reign from all enemies foreign and domestic.

Article 4: I ask my hand, alias Mara Jade, to continue in her current role for my son.

Article 5: I hereby place a bounty of 10,000,000,000,000 credits collectively on the heads of (proceeds to list every incompetent and disloyal Imperial admiral, captain, commandant, general, governor, moff, grand moff) to be paid out in the above %s upon confirmation of their head being removed from their shoulders. I could not clean house while I was alive but this is a last gift I can give to the people of the galaxy.

Article 6: I confirm Director Ysanne Isard nee Mola as…

Selected Excerpts from the Holo Drama, "Order Even From Beyond the Grave." This drama purports to cover the actual articles of the First Emperor's will and proceeds to follow their consequences on the galaxy already reeling from the death of its beloved Emperor.

Imperial Archivists would like to remind our viewers that the actual will remains classified due to the number of Top Secret information provided in said will. Furthermore, Emperor Steven's press secretary reminds our viewers that speculation about his parentage is not necessary and to trust his office that he is the legitimate successor to Emperor Palpatine through his last will and testament.

Collector's Edition Special Interviews

Interview No. 1: Joining us today is retired Director of the Imperial Service Bureau who ensured the proper reading of the will Ysanne Isard nee Mola. Director can you shed some light on why after the Emperor's death you had to personally intervene with the Will reading?

Director, "Thank you for having me. In response to your question, while I am still under a number of NDAs, I can say it was necessary. There were forces high in the Imperial bureaucracy which were attempting to change the will to have themselves listed as the Heir. As such, I did what any loyal son or daughter of the Emperor would do. Ensure the proper reading occurred."

Interview No. 89: Joining us tonight is famed investigative historian and archaeologist Indiana Jones, "Dr. Jones, in your recent expedition to Biss, where Emperor Palpatine was building a new throne world you found evidence that….

Something the governor could have his R &D team develop could be a personal drone or droid to be used by his spacial forces for aiding them in combat situations.

The empire had a version of this called the seeker droid though it wasn't commonly handed out to normal storm troopers.
It was in the possession of the inferno squad special forces and an inquisitor.

You know it's funny the MC is going the Ciaphas Cain route. Doing everything because of his own cowardice and self serving attitude and yet to everyone else he's a Hero! So I fully expect once the mid/outer Rim start revolting after the Death Stars destruction the Minda System is going to be the only system loyal to the Empire. Mostly because they are loyal to the Governor. That and I kind of expect the armor to start to diverge. For some reason I want to see Hell Diver Armor in Star Wars.

Now the real question, does the mother also have a habit of throwing a rubber ball at walls?
She probably has a full room of the them that she can throw herself into and hide like a cat, because she can, and no one is going to complain about it because having a fixation on rubber balls is better than some out there.

Imperial Sentry Droids. Combat droids might be hilariously illegal for your average Joe's, but the Empire happily uses them and our boii is part of the Imperial Bureaucracy, which may as well be part of the war machine, so I guess it isn't actually illegal.

That and he's in the Outer Rim on a Backwater World. So it is likely he can get away with things that those on more prominent world can't.

He isn't getting away with anything, the Empire uses combat droids.

Questions for the Audience

This post exists solely to ask for recommendations/advice on various parts of the story. While I am open to suggestions regarding just about every aspect of the story, there are some that I am particularly looking for.

  1. Politics: the council voting system I cooked up was a rush job, and upon further inspection kinda shit, as it overwhelms voters with teams from the boonies that will never get voted for, due to cities' overwhelming advantages in population . Obviously, there is no perfect political system, but any advice/recommendations regarding a voting system and the greater council system will be taken into consideration. However, please keep the discussion civil, cause I've seen some stories with 2 chapters get locked cause people couldn't stop yapping for five fucking minutes.
  2. Expansion: Where should the MC go from here? Should he slow things down, speed things up, get down low or make a big splash? There are many paths, and I want to know your opinions.
  3. Military: Assuming the Minda System recovers from this attack easily in the near future, and gains a minimum of 50 million credits to spend on ships, attack craft, etc… along with the manpower to crew them, what fleets would you build? How would you organize the defense and trade fleets of the Minda System? This is a hypothetical, because there is a damn good chance the MC never gets there, but theoretical fleet building is fun. What dangers might said fleet encounter in the future? These kinds of questions are fun to answer, so go ham.

This is mostly just a rush post, cause I have literally nothing else to do. No homework, and no games, since my house burned down in the Eaton Canyon fire earlier this month, so I only have the macbook I use for college.

Speaking of college, winter semester or not, I gotta lock in, so while I will still update frequently, most of the new chapters will still be weekend releases.

Thanks for reading!

1: I can't say much about the ideas for a more refined democratic system. First off I won't pretend to know the subject well enough to come upon with a better plan without a lot more research, and in all honesty I don't exactly think too highly of the Democratic system at the moment.

2: I suggest you slow down for a bit. He's honestly made a LOT of progress already, but pushing too aggressively could just as easily fail to make returns and his progress will stall and burn out. Better to shore up what he already has and think of further expansion later after everything is solidified enough to survive a few failed ventures.

3: Three ships in particular. The Carrack-class Light Cruiser, the Quasar-class cruiser-carrier (followed IMMEDIATELY by the Ton-Falk-class escort-carrier) and the Broadside-class cruised kdb-1 (or maybe scale up to the Peltast-class Star Destroyer if Thrawn is willing to share). You don't have the manpower, funds, logistics or infrastructure for even a handful of Venators, but Thrawn's success with other ships considered 'lesser' by Tarkin Doctrine shows those are honestly overrated. The key to victory is efficient usage of combined arms tactics, and these ships more than provide.

There would be two layers of a formation; the first would be the Carracks in the front, specifically the turbo laser heavy variant. These things are INFAMOUSLY durable and capable of punching out a MUCH larger ship if they work as a small group. But their true purpose would be using their frankly 'ASTONISHING' speed for a ship of their size to close in and knife-fight with an enemy fleet. They are durable and hard hitting enough that then enemy couldn't afford to ignore them, they would NEED to put attention on them so they don't get gutted, especially since their tractor beams when used in groups would mess EVERYTHING up. And that's where the second layer of formation would come in. Because far in the backline would be the Quasars and Broadsides offering all their ranged support, protected by a number of Carracks with an anti-starfighter loadout. Quasars are meant for one thing - STARFIGHTERS. Lots and lots of starfighters, deploying screens of them to support the Carracks by countering enemy starfighters as needed to support the Carracks and send out bombers to hit openings. The Ton Falk is straight up better in every way, so you should probably scale up to that, but it doesn't come out until the destruction of the first death star, if I recall correctly. Lastly would be the Broadsides. Despite the name, these ships are HEAVILY front loaded, capable of firing huge salvos of ship grade concussion missiles, effectively allowing it to function as a sniper ship capable of reaching out and touching an enemy ship from a long distance, with one HELL of a payload. Best part, all of these are cheap and plentiful enough making a small fleet of them would be easy.

4: Empire for now, but the Emperor won't be around forever. I can seen him having SOME degree of lenience towards the Rebellion, simply because the Empire IS pretty stupid levels of evil under Palpatine and other leadership elements, but there's no point in openly supporting them for all the bad attention it would bring. He can probably allow them to have a base in his system, in the OUTSKIRTS of it far away from everything else, where he can quietly arrange sales of surplus resources and supplies, but nothing more. Of course, AFTER the Emperor is dead, go on Independent. He'll be in a perfect position in the Outer Rim with probably the biggest fleet around for a LONG distance, meaning he could easily bargain his forces and resources for the formation of his own league and rapidly expand into a burgeoning major power.

The butterflies from this fic will be insane, even from just the improved targeting software in helmets, due to adoption cost being a mere update. I can see the Rebel infiltration/assault of Scarif completely failing, meaning no plans, so Yavin gets space dusted and Rebelion extinguished.

Our guy making all these plans for the DS destruction and it never happens because of a little change by him🤣

@Freefaller, you could expand towards becoming something close to an ecumenopolis. Ecumenopolis is a core world thing and would take longer than 2 years to build. The nail that sticks out gets hammered.

He could run a 2 planet system with planetary rings. I've played too much Stellaris. Those rings can have an imbedded shipyard, planetary shield generators, gun, torpedo, and turbo laser implacement, space kennel for your space creatures. Those don't interfere with adding defense satellites, which you can also do to space station orbiting the sun you can do yo the ring. There's also weather control, residential, commercial, and industry you can do on rings but not space stations. Sure you can build a greenhouse on the station orbiting the sun. But the crop enrichment meant for the planet below is ring only.

Also within the solar system a cluster of satellite bases with self sustaining green houses, defense in depth, and high speed communication.

He'd really have to hammer out cheap reliable public transit between everything and some armed escort fort it.
