With This Ring (Young Justice SI) (Thread Fourteen)

It's been a while since I watched Spiderman, but the only symbiotes I remember from it are Venom and Carnage. Were there others?

Those were the two with the most screentime. They eventually introduced a few others. Scream, Lasher, Agony, Riot and Phage are basically extracted son-samples of Venom created by a group of rich jackoffs trying to control the future after it goes full apocalypse.

There's a few spin offs of those but the other real big one is Antivenom who was created when Eddie Brock (the OG Venom host) got inverted by Mr. Negative. Antivenom is basically Venom but sane, can heal and really really mess up other Symbiotes.

Also the official name for the Symbiote species is Klyntar. Fun Fact: in Marvel canon, Grendal and his mother of Beowulf fame were both Symbiotes

... that's really not a flattering she hulk on the wiki. She looks thin and emaciated

I think it's funny that she tested out the new ring's safety by poking Gambit. Really shows which of the two she actually cares about. XD
On one hand, Paul's got an environmental shield and is safe to touch anyway. So wouldn't be useful as a test.

On the other hand, if someone else was available, I think she'd have used Gambit anyway.

Ooo yeah. Government weapons program* to clone symbiotes and now there's a dozen of them.

Weirdly enough, when they finally introduced the symbiote homeworld, with billions of them, I don't think they introduced any new symbiote characters from that. Introduced an evil god that was trapped in the heart of their world. But they introduced an entire planet full of symbiotes and never bothered to make any of them interesting reoccurring characters.

*Frankly, we should always just assume there's a government weapons program to clone [insert character here]. Because there's always one of those in Marvel. The only question is if it's America or Canada.

No, no, I know that there are other symbiotes in the comics and other such media. I'm asking whether or not there were others in Earth 92131 or Earth 534834.
Ah, appearing in the 90's cartoons. In that case, no. We only got Venom and Carnage on screen.

Although I standby my statement of there being a government black project somewhere trying to clone them. There's always a government black project.

Like that's stopped you from incorporating all sorts of stuff from across the multiverse for Earth-16 wholesale?

Yeah, but Zoat adding an element because he thinks it makes for a more entertaining story is a choice.

Zoat adding an element because he mistakenly thought it was already part of the setting is a mistake.

The former is fine, the latter is something to be avoided.

To be fair, I thought Earth 92131 and Earth 534834 were the same setting.

Eh. Given that the two extant examples are both known to be crazy I think that they've got better things to spend their money on. Like giant killer robots.

Huh. That wasn't bad actually. Since when did our boy got game?

HIs game is like a power ring - he fumbles through everything else because needs to store up a charge for one massige game-burst. And if you only get one shot, you make it count.

That's a bad Zoat *Sprays with water* Bad, bad Zoat.

I think we all know he trolls us like this on purpose, and we've been letting him do it to us for years. And yet, we always forgive him...

Oh please.

Since when has common sense ever stopped a weapons program in the Marvel universe from doing something stupid, like cloning two insane creatures.

We really need help.

President Kelly would probably have shot a lot of that stuff down. Given that the Phalanx literally took over the country and so demonstrated that aliens are far more dangerous.

That will probably not stop some government group or weapons program from deciding that they need to clone psychotic monsters, even though the president is against it.

No, there was also this symbiont hive on Counter-Earth.
Nah, that's Earth-751263, which is a separate continuity to the 90's Spider-Man and X-Men cartoons.

I mean, Zoat seems to be (accidentally) merging the Earth 92131 and Earth 534834 timelines for this alt-Paul, so he might merge that one too. But no mention of that being included yet.

Paid attention to...

What I was saying..?

What? That cartoon series was a direct sequel to the 90s Spider-Man show set on Earth. Why did they put it on an alternate timeline?

Not exactly. The final episode of the Spider-Man series involved the conclusion of the Secret War crossover, then the "alt Spider-Men from across the multiverse team up to stop their evil counterpart" story, where a nutso (cloned) version of Spidey merged with the Carnage symbiote and created a multiversal bomb that would destroy multiple dimensions.

Following that, Madam Web said she'd take Spidey on a planeswalking tour to find his Mary Jane (who fell through a portal a few seasons ago) as reward for him saving a chunk of the multiverse.

Then they flew off into the blind eternities together. The End.

Spider-Man Unlimited was a different version of Peter Parker who never went tooling off across the multiverse, instead being present on Earth when the discovery of another world on the opposite side of the sun was made, then ended up getting launched there.

I frown as my armour's computer informs me of the exact time and date. Yes, I… Think that sort of thing was very important to

I want to remember. I loathe the idea of my recall decaying, of the mental networks that make me me becoming unreliable.

me-.

I wince as another strand of orange light extrudes from the Orange Central Power Battery and flows into me.

"Are you you yet?"

I don't change my posture, but shake my head as Hinon floats into my field of view.

"I don't know. No. No, I'm not. I've got… I've somehow recovered most of my memories… I think. At least enough of them to make sense of things… But I don't know what I've lost, and the… The self-awareness I had…"

I shake my head.

"I suppose it can't be self-awareness if those bits literally aren't part of my self any longer."

"Hm."

"As much as I appreciate you checking up on me, I've got a lot of mission reports to go through, so..?"

"I've got a present for you."

She removes her left hand from her sleeve, an orange power ring held between her thumb and forefinger.

"I had thought that next time you felt the need for a new ring, you would be the one making it yourself. Since you clearly can't do that, I made a rush order."

"I'm… Sorry."

"Whatever for?"

"For… Getting the rings destroyed. Larfleeze's ring, and the one you nearly killed yourself making-."

"Larfleeze's ring was a near-useless antique that I'm still not completely sure that Krona didn't have some sort of backdoor to. As for my ring… Frankly, that wasn't my best work."

"It wasn't?"

"As you correctly observed, I put myself into a coma creating it, splitting my focus in all too many ways. And then it went into the Bleed, and frankly it's a minor miracle that it wasn't completely destroyed."

I frown. "Miracle? Do you mean literally or metaphorically?"

"I know that you consider me old, but Triarch worship was well before my time." She shakes her head. "I doubt that any deity you know -most of whom are younger than me- would intervene to deliver a power ring to someone like you. And that's before even considering the awkwardness of delivering it to a reality like yours."

I carefully extend my left hand and take it from her.

"So this is… Better?"

"Better than the ones you were using. About as good as the ones we've forged for the rest of the Corps."

I frown, then nod. "Because all of the Controllers who've forged them have had access to the Orange Central Power Battery, so there's no reason for them to be any worse."

"They're slightly worse. There are… Things you can do, when you know the prospective Lantern as well as I know you."

"Hinon, I'm not sure that I know me at the moment."

"No, I do. You'll work to get back to full mission fitness, because you hate the idea of losing bits of yourself. Which means that you'll be the person I made this ring for eventually."

"I…" I nod. "Intend to, but I've got no idea how long that will take."

"Then you'll have a mildly-suboptimal ring until then. It should still be better than the one you were using." She frowns, turning to look at the Central Power Battery. "Have you tried talking to the Ophidian?"

"No. I didn't think that was a good idea. And I don't… Exactly remember what she's like."

"No?"

"I've got the records, and I remember some of what we did together, but I don't have the… Intuitive understanding of her mindset that I used to have. I remember that it.. used to feel like she was… Next to me, but invisible, the whole time." I shake my head. "And I really don't feel that way right now. Has..? Have any of the other Lanterns tried talking to her?"

"Talking at her, certainly. But she appears to be a one-Lantern snake."

I smile. "That's kind of nice."

I exhale, sliding the new-. No, no, my new power ring onto my left ring finger. My environmental shield engages at once-.

"Oh! Damn it!"

"Is something wrong?"

"I can't use the Honden at the moment. It would-. Probably take me years to fly back to Earth like this."

"Why would you want to return to Earth?"

"I don't right now. But I will probably want to within the next few years."

I stand, pointing my left hand at the Central Power Battery and wanting my-. Myself back. What had been occasional threads becomes a mist, and I-. It's quite a relief to-. Huh, ice cream. Not.. just ice cream, but the days out with the extended family association that had slipped my mind.

"So what actually happened?"

"You flew up to a Reach ship which contained a surprising amount of qwa-matter. The Weaponer's beside himself. It's the most entertainment I've had in ten thousand years."

"So..?"

"Normally I'd say something like 'so don't do that again you silly man', but the Reach can block most types of ring scan and we didn't have any reason to believe that they had anything like enough qwa-matter for something like that. The unfortunate truth is that it's not possible to predict everything a sufficiently clever enemy might try." She huffs. "Having examined the site, it looks like you were completely disintegrated."

"I woke up in a body."

"After you told Lantern Gozzi that you could see spirits, she decided to create a physical duplicate and hope for the best." Hinon frowns. "Normally, I'd warn you about a woman showing that much interest in your body, but since she's coluan you're probably alright."

"And… Between my affinity for the orange light and her ring… That was enough?"

Hinon looks at me like I've said something stupid.

"No, of course not. You drew a tiny portion of the Honden into the material universe, a part associated with the Leentniar. When your physical body was destroyed, it… Dumbing it down a great deal, it snapped back, taking a lot of you with it."

I nod.

"Do you have a plan for getting the rest back?"

"Yes. I'm going to need a wizard and a lift back to the Leentniar's system."

Ok, so he may get his enlightenment back.

Really hope this gets resolved by the next episode.

Weakening Paul, especially during the war with the Reach, just seems wrong. Especially compared to the power ups renegade has been getting.

I'd have been skeptical that death/destruction would result in him losing his enlightenment, but the explanation they gave satisfied me well enough. Though I don't remember qwa matter being so metaphysical in previous demonstrations (but it makes thematic sense for worshippers of the Anti-Monitor), maybe I'm forgetting. I may reread the initial visit to Qward at some point soon. I wonder if the fully restored Paragon will learn to manufacture greater amounts of qwa matter in response to the Reach.

Visiting Earth might also be helpful because he should have the strongest desire-associations there, both his original attachments to everyone and theirs to him.

And that nobody currently has the knowledge to replace them.

I think Sackville helped John carve them, but I could be wrong. Edit: The Ophidian once tried to modify Koriandr's soul-structures to match the Paragon, so it's not out of the realm of possibiility for her to remember the shape of Paragon's soul and recreate it, if it doesn't automatically fall into the same shape when he gets it back.
