With This Ring (Young Justice SI) (Thread Fourteen)

"By the Source, you're a teenager. Iname-."
Grayven is such a dad.

"I have many pockets
Ironically the anime character is the most sensibly dressed of the group.

"They're a bit less resilient than the atomic axe. Also, they glow, and power ring constructs are remotely detectable far more easily than passive usage is. Similarly, I'm not doing bounding leaps because seismic sensors could pick that up easily."
Thus far all they have encountered is a fancy interdiction system. It seems a bit premature to conclude whatever or whoever it is needs to be ambushed and murdered.

Peculiar and worrying. You can teleport here, but not teleport away? Strikes me as some manner of honey trap, then. Like a planetary pitcher plant designed to attract visitors only to consume them somehow... I'm getting the feeling that impact event was something being imprisoned here. And if the episode title is any hint, it's something tied to Fear... That isn't Parallax, anyway.
If this isn't malevolent… It might be more like climbing down a cliff versus climbing up a waterfall, after a glacier melts.

This might be an abandoned project of one of the Maltusian offshoots. Or Krona. If it was an active project, then there'd be some trace things for Hinon to sense. If this was touched by an Emotional Embodiment, like those bull-touched worlds, then Hinon would have sensed it IF she used the appropriate equipment. Maybe this is related to one of the Endless?

I flap my right hand. "He overreached and got stuck on the Source Wall long before she was born. Father doesn't talk about him much. But it's almost certainly not him, because you don't come back from the Source Wall.

Ah, we finally figured out the last step in the Light's "swallow the spider to catch the fly" series of plans.

"So then we bring in Darkseid to stop the Reach. And after that?"

"We release Darkseid's father from the Source Wall to take care of his son."

"Brilliant!"

"Persuader." I frown at her. "Of course we can kill it."

Just got to make sure that doesn't ruin the value of the planet that made you want it in the first place.

"Right. The only interesting feature on this planet is the impact crater, so that's where we're going in the meantime. Start walking, girls."

Grayven gives a lot of logical reasons to walk, but I think partially he's just enjoying a nice hike through the rain in an alien landscape.

Persuader should probably consider training with aerodiscs, though. Going through their mobility methods just made obvious that while the axe is fine for long distance travel, she's not very battlefield-level mobile.

I'm wondering if it could have been that super-Tamaranean escaped experiment, X'Hal. She could have been a super-Tamaranean AND a goddess on top of that, in which case she'd be magical.

Did Zoat say she was Tamaranean here? Because in the New Earth comics which Zoat normally takes inspiration from, Tamaraneans didn't exist back then, the Psions hadn't invented them yet, X'Hal was an Okaaran.

Anyway, she is a goddess in that she's worshipped by multiple species on multiple planets in the Vega system. Whether that would have any affect on a person's soul structure in Zoat's metaphysics I'm not sure.

If memory serves, Zoat indicated that the Tamaranean ability to absorb solar energy is analagous to the New God's ability to grow their souls.

But X'Hal being a Stargate/Star Trek-esque energy being however doesn't preclude her having magic powers- Magic is a form of energy in DC.

Actually shown in the comics once- The Weird. The Weird was an energy being from another dimension whose people were being fed apon by fellow energy beings.

He pulled a Starman (The movie, not the comic book series) and made a corporeal body based on a dead man. He got it wrong and his atomic structure was unstable, the JL had an issue with a guy showing up who could go boom in a really big way. His energy powers allowed him to manipulate green lantern energy and Dr Fate's magic.

The energy vampires he fled also taught their ability to manipulate energy to a human, giving him magic powers to open a portal to Earth so they could feed.

"Teleporters?" I fire railgun rounds into a small herd of… Pinkies? Causing them to burst. "This happened because of teleporters?"

Corporal Taggart nods. "What I heard. Wasn't exactly invited to the briefing."

"You weren't? Why wouldn't they brief a marine taking part in the operation?"

He huffs contemptuously. "Wasn't supposed to be taking part. I was only on Mars for my court-martial. Guess they figured they might as well get some use out of me."

"They brought you to Mars for a court-martial? Isn't that..? Really expensive, when they could just do it on Earth?"

He shrugs. "They were sending the rocket anyway. One guy's not that much extra fuel. And if I'm already on Mars they can just give me shit duty there."

Mazikeen tosses the imp head that she was studying into the pile. "What were you being tried for?"

"Mutiny and assault on an officer. Maybe attempted murder, I wasn't really listening."

And unlike last time, I actually recognised this setting. Doom. We're probably talking to the main character, and… I wish I'd played more than the shareware version. With the invulnerability cheat turned on all the time.

"Did you do it?"

"Yeah, I did it. Fucker ordered my fire team to murder a bunch a' unarmed monks. He got his. B.F.'s grabbed me, but word got around. Couldn't try me on Earth without the hippies reaming the whole government." He looks around as Sandro sends a group of zombified marines ahead of us. "You do this kind of thing a lot?"

"Specifically this? Fighting demons isn't a daily occurrence, but this isn't my first time. And our teleporters usually don't route themselves through Hell. That seems less than wise."

He snorts. "Tell me about it. But stuff like this? The skeleton's a wizard and you're dressed like a superhero."

"That's because I am a superhero."

He raises his eyebrows. "Fuckin' a'."

"It has its moments. Of course, we also have supervillains."

"Is it like the comic books, or can you just shoot them?"

"You can, but you wouldn't believe the amount of fuss that generates. Ah, sorry, this is probably a bit of a personal question, but do you know much about your family history?"

He hesitates, then his eyes drift down to the rail rifle I created for him. "No. Me and Dad don't see eye to eye and Mom died years ago."

"Do you remember her maiden name?"

"Ah… Something Jewish or Polish? … Blasterwitz?"

"Blazkowicz?"

He frowns curiously. "You knew her?"

"There's a distinct possibility that you're descended from World War Two commando William Joseph Blazkowicz."

He appears to take that in his stride. "He ever fight demons?"

"Yes. And zombies, Nazis-." For a moment I consider correcting myself to 'national socialists', but decide against it. "And he once fought a power armour wearing Adolf Hitler."

He stares at me. "Adolf Hitler had power armour? They don't even give us power armour!"

"There is no justice."

"Did the demons look like these things?"

"No. The biggest one looked like a giant minotaur. I don't remember what the others looked like."

He nods. "Haven't seen any like that yet. Maybe these are just the little ones."

"Probably."

"Orange Lantern." Sandro's hands are glowing. "I believe that I have located the focal point of the ritual which the demons are using to hold the portal open."

"Neat. Where is it?"

"In that direction." He points out across the barren rock of Phobos. "I'm not certain exactly what it is. Demons on Ashan use different methods to escape Sheogh."

Taggart pulls a tablet out of his armour and calls up a map. "Okay, we're in the labs. That takes us past Central Processing, but there shouldn't be anything there. It's just some storage bunkers."

Sandro nods. "The demons may well have built it themselves, or brought it with them from whatever realm they originate."

"What happens when we blow it up?"

"I don't know enough about these demons to say. It may simply prevent more from appearing, or those here may find themselves drawn back into their realm. I certainly can't think of any downside to it."

Taggart frowns. "Won't clean out the rest of the facility, but that's probably gunna be a whole lot easier if they can't get reinforcements."

"Mazikeen?"

"I should be able to shut down whatever sort of portal it is. Unless we don't find Angelica, in which case we may need to go through it."

"Right. So far they haven't had anything that's a real threat to us, but if they're going to change that, this is where they'll do it. Sandro, do you know Summon Phoenix?"

"Of course."

"Right. Taggart, you're squishiest. You're more useful as a spare pair of eyes. You're on overwatch. Call out threats and take shots of opportunity."

Taggart considers that for a moment, then looks pointedly at Endymion. Endymion frowns, draw his sword and swings it in an arc through a nearby wall before returning it to its scabbard.

"Right. You an officer?"

"Actually, yes. I hold the rank of Illustres in the Orange Lantern Corps, roughly the equivalent of a green beret colonel."

"Huh. Alright. Not exactly living up to my demon-slaying great grandpa."

"Getting you better gear would require too much retraining. Sandro, crowd control. Start with the phoenix. I've never seen one before. Mazikeen, countermagic. Some sort of ritual is just about the only way they can hurt me so please make sure that they don't get to use one."

"These demons have shown no sophisticated magic. But I will be ready to act."

"Great. Endymion, bodyguard. Slash anything that gets close."

He nods, and I extend my environmental shield around the whole team and lift everyone into the air. The… Well, not 'north', but in the direction Sandro indicated. I can see the construction… And Taggart was right, it's a lot smaller than the other structures around the crater. There's an area where the rock has just… Been broken through to the surface, and-.

I recognise those pillars. That's the end of the freeware version of Doom. There should be a Baron of Hell inside each one. But the… Walls around them appear to have already been lowered. Why would-?

The teleportation pad shimmers as… Some sort of white demon I don't recognise teleports through, and-.

I'm on fire!

I didn't realize the two franchises were connected that way.

That should say 'Demons'.

I didn't realize the two franchises were connected that way.

They are indeed, they are also connected to the Commander Keen franchise, since evidently William J. Blazkowicz II aka 'Billy Blaze', the titular Commander is Doomguy's Dad according to John Romero. It was never really official, as fitting in a child genius going to mars in a space ship made out of soup cans and vacuum parts to fight aliens in a football helmet would be a bit of a stretch for the hard sci fi of Doom

But they did put his visuals into the old games as a call out to the companies other production. And mostly for the creator of Keen to get revenge on his creation (he never liked the cute stuff he had to make and preferred the blood and gore of Doom, so the Keen sprites in the latter tended to be Hanging, or on Spears.)

"Teleporters?" I fire railgun rounds into a small herd of… Pinkies? Causing them to burst. "This happened because of teleporters?"

Corporal Taggart nods. "What I heard. Wasn't exactly invited to the briefing."
Yes, that's exactly what caused all this. UAC breached the borders of hell with their portal experiments, took one look at the resource-rich environment and went 'right, we'll have all of that, thanks!'

"You weren't? Why wouldn't they brief a marine taking part in the operation?"

He huffs contemptuously. "Wasn't supposed to be taking part. I was only on Mars for my court-martial. Guess they figured they might as well get some use out of me."
Entirely accurate to the Doomguy's backstory. Right down to the court-martial.

"They brought you to Mars for a court-martial? Isn't that..? Really expensive, when they could just do it on Earth?"

He shrugs. "They were sending the rocket anyway. One guy's not that much extra fuel. And if I'm already on Mars they can just give me shit duty there."
And then Hell decided to invade Mars, and your shit duty turned into 'save humanity by killing every demon in your path.' 😨 Have fun.

Mazikeen tosses the imp head that she was studying into the pile. "What were you being tried for?"

"Mutiny and assault on an officer. Maybe attempted murder, I wasn't really listening."
Understandable given the hellacious beatdown he apparently gave him. The details vary a little, because videogame backstories in those days tended to be brief affairs in the easily-discarded manual.

And unlike last time, I actually recognised this setting. Doom. We're probably talking to the main character, and… I wish I'd played more than the shareware version. With the invulnerability cheat turned on all the time.

"Did you do it?"
I prefer modern Sourceports like GZDoom, which has a buddha mode (you take damage, until your last hitpoint, which is totally invincible except to telefragging.) Though I prefer unlimited ammo modes. And back in the day, I'd edit the WAD stats to do stuff like a 'chaingun' that fired shells... 😈

You could say that. This situation is kind of easy, given they can tear through the mobs without any concern for casualties or repercussions. Suffice to say, I expect cleanup will require mops to wipe up the gibs. 😤

About the only other fiction I can think of off the top of my head that does the 'transit via Hell' thing is Warhammer 40k. And that's a side-effect of the shared consciousness of the galaxy being a chaotic morass...

"That's because I am a superhero."

He raises his eyebrows. "Fuckin' a'."
I mean, you can see him tearing through grunts, imps and pinkies like this is 'I'm too young to die' mode. Would you doubt his claim?

"It has its moments. Of course, we also have supervillains."

"Is it like the comic books, or can you just shoot them?"
Sadly the former, as much as OL might sometimes wish it was the latter...

Taking a leaf out of Quake II's book, eh? Efficient, I suppose. Not quite as much fun as a well-placed BFG shot, but quicker.

"Do you remember her maiden name?"

"Ah… Something Jewish or Polish? … Blasterwitz?"

"Blazkowicz?"
Ah, yes. The iD software continuity nod. A long line of heroes for their games (Wolfenstein 3D, Commander Keen and Quake.)

He frowns curiously. "You knew her?"

"There's a distinct possibility that you're descended from World War Two commando William Joseph Blazkowicz."
I doubt that name would mean anything to him at this stage, if he was that unsure of his mother's maiden name.

He appears to take that in his stride. "He ever fight demons?"

"Yes. And zombies, Nazis-." For a moment I consider correcting myself to 'national socialists', but decide against it. "And he once fought a power armour wearing Adolf Hitler."
Man, the iD canon has some weird times. And yes, that was the final boss of Wolfenstein 3D. Note that the real game was not quite that energetic. 😏Or bloody. Amazing what you can do with WADs and mods.

He stares at me. "Adolf Hitler had power armour? They don't even give us power armour!"

"There is no justice."
Not that it stopped canon Doomguy from ripping (and tearing) his way through 3 to 5 episodes of Doom and possibly Doom II 30-odd levels (depending on how you interpret the protagonist canon.)

"Did the demon look like these things?"

"No. The biggest one looked like a giant minotaur. I don't remember what the others looked like."
The Cyber-Demon, final boss of Episode 2 of the first game. Largest of their kind, but not the only form.

He nods. "Haven't seen any like that yet. Maybe these are just the little ones."

"Probably."

"Orange Lantern." Sandro's hands are glowing. "I believe that I have located the focal point of the ritual which the demons are using to hold the portal open."
Ah, yes. The final level of the shareware Episode 1: Knee-Deep in the Dead.'

"Neat. Where is it?"

"In that direction." He points out across the barren rock of Phobos. "I'm not certain exactly what it is. Demon on Ashan use different methods to escape Sheogh."
More direct teleportation spells via ritual spaces, I expect. With the attendant issue of the binding ritual forcing them to do what their summoner orders?

Taggart pulls a tablet out of his armour and calls up a map. "Okay, we're in the labs. That takes us past Central Processing, but there shouldn't be anything there. It's just some storage bunkers."

Sandro nods. "The demons may well have built it themselves, or brought it with them from whatever realm they originate."
Making good time. That's only two levels left. I take it they skipped the secret level. 😏

"What happens when we blow it up?"

"I don't know enough about these demons to say. It may simply prevent more from appearing, or those here may find themselves drawn back into their realm. I certainly can't think of any downside to it."
Sadly, it's likely that while it'll stop the demons here, those on Phobos and Earth will keep coming... Doomguy's rampage weakened them considerably in his journey from Mars' moons to Hell to Earth to Hell again.

Taggart frowns. "Won't clean out the rest of the facility, but that's probably gunna be a whole lot easier if they can't get reinforcements."

"Mazikeen?"
Ugh, that's one of the worst parts of the highest difficulty, 'Nightmare': Enemies begin to respawn after a short time once killed.

As if he wouldn't? This is a wizard who managed to break out of his home universe. Of course he's going to hit the end-level spells of every lore he learns... ...I think? 🤔

Heh. Little flashback to the opening of Metal Gear Rising, there. The one where Raiden swing his sword twice, a dozen slashes appear on containers nearby, and they collapse to block the road behind him...

"Right. You an officer?"

"Actually, yes. I hold the rank of Illustres in the Orange Lantern Corps, roughly the equivalent of a green beret colonel."

"Huh. Alright. Not exactly living up to my demon-slaying great grandpa."
Given how canon Doomguy turned out, little more than a living weapon tossed about in a war between Earth, Hell and 'angels', be glad you've got this easy.

"Getting you better gear would require too much retraining. Sandro, crowd control. Start with the phoenix. I've never seen one before. Mazikeen, countermagic. Some sort of ritual is just about the only way they can hurt me so please make sure that they don't get to use one."
Excessive preparation given that most demons succumb to bullets fairly simply.

"These demons have shown no sophisticated magic. But I will be ready to act."

"Great. Endymion, bodyguard. Slash anything that gets close."
I'm guessing Endy passed on a gun. Fair, given neither lifetime would have any knowledge of them.

Ah, looks like they rushed an Arch-vile through the portal. Best known for their annoying line-of-sight flame attack and their ability to revive ungibbed lesser mobs.

This is turning out to be a weird-ass co-op game of Doom. A god-modder console-hacker, three Heretic players and Doomguy no-clipping about the map. Wonder what the Demons think is going on? I suspect their leaders would be having concerning thoughts about certain powerful foes when they hear about these lunatics...

Also Commander Keen, who fought aliens instead of demons, but did so in secret and so almost nobody other than his babysitter knows about it, and she only knows about it because the aliens abducted her one time and Keen had to save her from getting eaten.

I didn't realize the two franchises were connected that way.
Heroism runs in the Blazkowicz bloodline, but it always skips a generation. So Wolfenstein's B.J. Blazkowicz was Commander Keen's grandfather, and Commander Keen was Doom Guy's grandfather.

Well, there is also Event Horizon, if you don't take the 'it's a 40K prequel' headcanon.

(And while not literally hell, Babylon 5's hyperspace certainly looks the part. And is easy to get lost in forever...)

He huffs contemptuously. "Wasn't supposed to be taking part. I was only on Mars for my court-martial. Guess they figured they might as well get some use out of me."
I'm getting a Mandela effect here. Could've sworn it was 'marshal'. I remember specifically thinking about how it's not 'martial'.
He raises his eyebrows. "Fuckin' a'."
Is he saying "Fuckin' A."? If not I'm unsure what the abbreviated a' is meaning here.

Thank you, corrected.

Because Summoning Magic is pretty bad.

He uses magic for a ranged attacks, but is most comfortable with his sword.

Actually... There's no real sign that they have leaders. The first cyberdemon commanded three cacodemons when it fought William Blazkowicz and is described as holding the portal open, but doesn't otherwise do any commanding. The lost souls on the level where you fight it are perfectly happy to infight with it. Same with the two spider masterminds and the Icon of Sin; they're holding the portal open but not otherwise exercising authority.

I believe that it's 'awesome'.

Which one is the god-modder?
OL, obviously. He can literally just magic up weapons and equipment via the power of console commands (AKA His Power Ring.) 😏 At least until his charge runs dry.
Ah, right, the term has different meanings in fanfic circles, right? I might change that to something else.

Because Summoning Magic is pretty bad.
Ah. Well, I haven't played the Might and Magic games. He probably mastered just about everything else useful, though... 🤔

He uses magic for a ranged attacks, but is most comfortable with his sword.
I was musing about the ancient knight and the Japanese teenager having the same level of knowledge about firearms, but that works too.

But if there are any leaders out there (like, say, the modern Doom series' Demonic big bads...) they would be sweating. Well, those who have sweat glands, anyway. 😅

Here's hoping that Paul's shenanigans in this world doesn't end up attracting unwanted attention from the Maykrs or Davoth, eh?

Either way, if Paul and his companions got sent here, then there must have been a Paul that got sent here before them too. Wonder what happened to him?

For a moment I consider correcting myself to 'national socialists', but decide against it.

Paul. My good sir.

Angelika has learned. She knows Nazis are Bad, that the genocide wasn't somehow necessary for a good world. That the atrocities were just atrocities, that the evil choice here is the dumb choice.

You do not need to keep using her terminology from when she was an ardent believer that was wavering. And it's not like it's an inaccurate descriptor; anyone who's actually looked at Mengele's experimentation understands that sadism came first, and actual learning came in practically never, with barely a few exceptions that came about largely by accident.

Taggart considers that for a moment, then looks pointedly at Endymion. Endymion frowns, draw his sword and swings it in an arc through a nearby wall before returning it to its scabbard.
This implies that despite the others in the group fighting demons for some indeterminate period of time Endymion has just been standing around looking pretty. Either that or Taggart has been paying very little attention to his squad mates.

Meh. You have been on fire before, stop being dramatic.

Yeah, the demon 'bosses' mostly just seem to spawn or otherwise allow demons to enter the area where they are, and don't really do anything more beyond that: Once the demons have spawned or passed through the portal they're just left to their own devices to run around and generally cause chaos.

We don't see any real sign of an actual hierarchy and proper organization amongst the demons until Doom (2016).

I was musing about the ancient knight and the Japanese teenager having the same level of knowledge about firearms, but that works too.

Sailor Moon is not really a series that ever sits down and explains "these are a character's powers" so you have to infer it by observation. My best understanding of Endymion's abilities are something like this.

His sword and armor aren't "real" in a sense; they're manifestations of his magic sort of like a Lantern's constructs except looking and feeling like real physical items. You can tell because they appear out of nothing when he assumes his Endymion identity. The same goes for his famous Tuxedo Mask roses (which he can also use as Endymion). They're a physical manifestation of a magical blast, which is why they can hit hard enough to embed themselves in concrete (or flesh) and they can also "dispel evil magic".

So he's superhumanly strong and tough, can hit things with a sword of magic or smite them from ranged with a rose of magic. He could at least try to dispel magical effects, though I can see why he's been hanging back and letting the wizards handle that. I don't recall if we ever see him teleport, but he certainly seems able to appear out of nowhere and his subordinates can teleport, so he probably can too. I believe he's also demonstrated some psychometry and ability to shield and ward off various effects.

In the terms that OL is familiar with he's probably got an enormous pool of unstructured magic like Circe or someone like that (I couldn't guess at how he specifically compares to Circe), but he's more a guy who channels it into fighting than a mage who uses spells or anything. He can kind of "do anything" but it would involve a lot of concentrating and trying to make it happen and he might or might not succeed. In RPG terms he has a decent sized variable power pool, but would have to spend a hero point to use it for most effects.
