• The site has now migrated to Xenforo 2. If you see any issues with the forum operation, please post them in the feedback thread.
  • Due to issues with external spam filters, QQ is currently unable to send any mail to Microsoft E-mail addresses. This includes any account at live.com, hotmail.com or msn.com. Signing up to the forum with one of these addresses will result in your verification E-mail never arriving. For best results, please use a different E-mail provider for your QQ address.
  • For prospective new members, a word of warning: don't use common names like Dennis, Simon, or Kenny if you decide to create an account. Spammers have used them all before you and gotten those names flagged in the anti-spam databases. Your account registration will be rejected because of it.
  • Since it has happened MULTIPLE times now, I want to be very clear about this. You do not get to abandon an account and create a new one. You do not get to pass an account to someone else and create a new one. If you do so anyway, you will be banned for creating sockpuppets.
  • Due to the actions of particularly persistent spammers and trolls, we will be banning disposable email addresses from today onward.
  • The rules regarding NSFW links have been updated. See here for details.

Xenforo - Do you guys want it here?

Expanded search hasn't been bought yet, since I didn't see the donation until after I had bought the license. However... the site is never in any danger of running out of processing power or memory. I've never seen it hit 10% on CPU power.

Although, hmm. It says 'appropriate for dedicated or VPS servers'. Ours is a shared server, it's not dedicated or a VPS.

The host you use has a twenty-four hour tech support line on their website. And they do hosting for Xenforo on their end, so they should be able to tell you whether or not the site can run the expanded search.

It takes a while to get through their support. They're rather slow. :/

Googled.
https://xenforo.com/community/threads/total-noob-starting-his-first-forum.80678/
According to this, the issue is not performance issue per say (at least for a small site like ours) but from needing a framework called elastisearch installed on the server to make Expanded Search work. So unless we can find a different host for a dedicated or cloud server solution, this is not an option.

For the fifty bucks remaining, I am thinking it would probably be better used to buying some decent forum skins right off the bat.

It's at least potentially possible that, since Arvixe advertises XF support, they already have ElasticSearch. Something to ask about, anyway.

True. So the elegee should still probably ask.

I have spoken with the Arvixe support, and they say that yes, enhanced search can be used by shared hosts such as us.

I will refrain from buying right now, until we get the server up and going on xenforo. Then I will add it.

Anyone know if SB uses it, or are they using the default?

Both SB and SV use expanded search. They get all the fancy bells and whistles.

Looking into Xenforo styles... wtf. $35 for a forum skin?

Found one that I shared on IRC that everyone seemed to like.

http://www.xenfocus.com/skins/fusion_dark/index.php

Only thirty bucks to boot.

Tanuki says we should give 1 like for every post in new system to a certain tanuki. :3

I chipped in a bit extra. It should be enough to cover the cost of whatever theme - let me know if more's needed.
I'd 'like' your post, but that has to wait till the actual forum move :p

Okay, so, forum move not happening tonight.

I have an installation of Xenforo set up(it was easy too, fuck $50 for XF to do it themselves), and I'm importing a database backup of this forum to test the importer and see what bugs crops up. It's not exactly quick even for our size, and I can see why it took SB a week to do it.

If things work out, I will open the test forum(again) for people to browse and check out. Note: the test forum will not survive, so don't post anything you don't want to lose. Assuming that nothing bad crops up, I will lock the forum tomorrow night and start the move. It may not be done by morning, but it should be by noon the next day.

How does setting up a copy of xenforo on the test site with the importer actually differ from just doing it properly once, short of bug checking I mean. Wouldn't it be simpler to set up the test, see if it works, and once any bugs are worked out, simply redirect the url address to the main forum?

Because the backup database isn't current. Any posts made, users registered, or anything else done after it was created wouldn't get transferred.

Plus, attempting it on the master database could fuck up the forum and lose it all if a bad bug came along.

Better safe than sorry.

Ah. Also you will probably want to purchase the Search Enhancer by the time you do the install, because it will take time for it to scour the board and populate a search database.

Also, have you acquired the Fusion Dark theme people seem to like yet?

Not yet. I'm more concerned with getting a working forum, then worrying about styles.

But proper aesthetics are a working forum

Does this have something to do with why all the likes vanished?
Yes. The board was upgraded to SMF 2.0.9 from 2.0.4 in preparation for the board migration to Xenforo, which required removing addons such as the multiquote and likes.

They would have been lost in any case, upon the move, so its not like its a huge loss.

Easy for you to say, you didn't have 3500+ of them! @_@

My record! My beautiful record! :'(

I'd say that is encouragement upon the move to pump out more glorious content to generate your like count, yes?

And I had only just reached 1:1 ratio, too. :p

I suppose I will have to do something dramatic. Maybe I'll write snips for every quest I'm reading, or something.

Alright, so, I have the test forum working as it should, I think.

So, go here and check it out. Post, start convos, check profiles, the works.

Note, clicking home or the logo will bring you back to this forum instead. I haven't bothered fixing that.

EDIT: fixed broken link

It's fixed now and OHGODTHEBRIGHT!

Also, I've noticed running quests is a great way to farm likes; during my short stint as a GM, I got a 1:2 post:like ratio. Just think of it as encouragement.

THE BRIGHT. Theelegee, please get the forum skin and add it. Seeing everything not being so BRIGHT will make it easier to test...

*blink, blink*

I've got a follower? How'd the hell that happen?

Not Vanathor, someone who hasn't been on since midday yesterday. Did this forum have a follow option? I never noticed it.

It's called the 'Buddy' System. Click someone's profile and see. It carries over apparently.
