With This Ring (Young Justice SI) (Thread Fourteen)

That prompts a smile. "I don't think my current girlfriend would like that too much.

I was reminded of this old comment tonight, and I realized something. Arisia is on this planet. She's a Lantern, most importantly.

This planet has sapient bugs.

Mr Zoat, Arisia is helping restore peace and prosperity to these rural New Genosians! She's an exotic foreign beauty, without the uncomfortably blemish-free skin of the New Gods!

Give her a Bug love interest...?

"…and honestly, after Sunset disproved the whole 'Friendship is Magic' thing-"

I feel a slight dampness on the back of my neck, and realise that Twilight is drug-induced coma-chewing my mane.

"-I'd have thought that she'd take the opportunity to re-evaluate."

Shining Armour glances awkwardly at me as we head towards Cadence's office. "Are you sure you're alright carrying her?"

"Oh, pish. I'm partially responsible for introducing her to existential dread and recreational narcotics. The least I can-"

"What?"

"-do is carry her around for a bit. Oh, yeah, I… Heh, so did you hear about the talk I did where most of the audience panicked and fled the auditorium and I had to have them darted so that they couldn't injure themselves in their panic?"

"I…" He squints slightly as he tries to remember. "Think.. Twilight mentioned it…"

"And then there was the thing where she didn't realise that the Pinkie Pie clones had an internal life, and the thing where the Cutie Mark Crusaders became alicorns… What was the fallout from that?"

"A whole lot of parents started nagging Sunset Shimmer to do the same to their foals, and Tempest Shadow had to double the guard when they refused to believe that she had a good reason not to."

Hah! "Well that's got to be just about the most ironic thing ever."

He chuckles quietly. "I know. I'm glad that Cadence and Sunset are getting along now, but when we started dating Cadence told me a whole lot about the things Sunset used to do…"

"I honestly haven't heard that part of things. I mean, I know that she was rude and abrasive, and I understand why she was like that even if Cadence obviously didn't deserve it. But no one's told me about anything else she did. Was there more to it?"

He nods slowly. "She once teleported into her room while Cadence was out, moved all her stuff into travel suitcases and then teleported the suitcases to the front gate."

"Ah."

"And added red dye to her shampoo. And replaced her feather grooming oil with glue."

I frown. "Huh. That.. sounds like something that would have triggered Celestia to intervene."

"She did." He sighs. "But she treated it like a misjudged joke, rather than what it actually was. It did make Sunset ease up… Well, more pretend that Cadence didn't exist."

I nod. "And given that Cadence had been uprooted and brought across the country to Canterlot, that sort of rejection would have been all the more damaging. I appreciate that it doesn't justify anything, but do you understand why Sunset did it?"

"Jealously and envy. She saw Cadence of 'stealing' Princess Celestia from her, on top of her being an alicorn when Sunset wasn't."

"And what sort of person would be afraid of something like that from someone as agreeable as Cadence?"

"Someone really insecure."

"Yeah. See, you're thinking those are characteristics she used to have that she's grown out of."

"Actually, I was giving you the credit."

"Well, thank you, but that's not it." I snort through my pony-nose. "Honestly, it's like Celestia went through a list of things not to do with a vulnerable foal and tried to tick them all off. All I had to do was get her away from the palace."

He frowns. "That.. can't be right. The Princess wouldn't-."

"How many foals has she brought up? Until Luna returned, how many equals did she have? How many friends-?" Oh no. I've just realised that I may well be Celestia's closest friend, and I don't even like her. "Does she have? She took an attention-starved filly into the palace for being good at magic, and then got confused when said filly became completely fixated on doing the thing that got her the attention she'd been denied for her whole life."

"I.. suppose I.. could see it happening." He blinks and shakes his head before knocking lightly on the door before us. "Okay, just let me explain that you're here first."

I nod. "Don't want to drive her to premature labour. Oh, quick question. How old is she?"

"Ah…" He frowns distractedly. "Actually, I-."

"Come in!"

He shakes his head and pushes the door open just wide enough for him to enter.

Sinestro, do you have any experience with obstetrics?

I have a full medical database for every species the qwardians ever dissected, in addition to what I acquired from human data networks. I also worked with Lantern Brin on several occasions.

I was just wondering… You've never said anything about wanting to visit Korugar, either in your universe or this one.

What would be the point? They rejected me. I can better achieve my objectives by working with you wherever you go.

What about sentiment?

What about it?

I suppose. A moment later Shining Armour pushes open the door and beckons me inside. I trot in, smiling politely at the expectant mother. "Cadence! You're looking gravid today!"

Because she really does. She's almost as round as a normal pony.

"Grayven." She waddles closer, pregnancy bulge wobbling. "I didn't realise that you were a doctor."

"I'm not. I cheat. Sinestro?"

"Scan complete, Lantern Grayven. What would you like to know?"

Cadence and Shining Armour exchange a glance, and he's the one who replies. "Are they healthy?"

"I don't have a baseline-" A construct image of a late stage foal foetus appears, and I note the horn and wings at once. "-for an alicorn foal, but I can detect no deformities or distress."

Shining Armour blinks. "An..? Alicorn?"

I nod. "Looks like. I imagine the idea of an alicorn just being born would be a bigger deal if Sunset hadn't already decoded ascension. Though if that's how it usually goes, it is going to create an interesting demographic issue as more and more ponies ascend." Hm. "Shining Armour, given that your wife and daughter are alicorns, is there any chance that you've reconsidered your position?"

"I…" He glances at Cadence, who stares at him pointedly. "I guess?"

"Neat. I'll get her to pencil you in. Unless you'd rather have Twilight-" I twist my neck around to glance back at where Twilight is sleeping off her medically induced coma on my neck. "-do it?"

He considers her current disposition for a moment.

"No, that's… Fine."

Cadence stares at the construct for a moment, and then at her own swollen abdomen. "Do you have any advice?"

"Focus your magic training on earth pony magic for improved endurance and magic resistance. Oh, and get a hermitage built."

She frowns in puzzlement. "What..? For..?"

"Your foal's nursery." She gives me a mild frown. "Normal foal surges are bad enough, but you're having an alicorn. They'll have massively increased raw power and arcane stamina and none of the control you already had when you ascended. It won't be safe for them to be around other ponies for years, and magic nullification strong enough to contain them might cause them permanent harm."

Her frown deepens. "Still…"

I throw up my wings in exasperation. "Alright, but if your foal blows up your capital and vaporises half of its population, don't come crying to me."

So is that how the pony planet ends then? Once they hit a critical mass of baby Alicorns with phenomenal magic power and no control over it?

"…and honestly, after Sunset disproved the whole 'Friendship is Magic' thing-"

I feel a slight dampness on the back of my neck, and realise that Twilight is drug-induced coma-chewing my mane.
And in any other situation, that might be considered cute. Here and now, it's just a sign that she's stable and still out cold. Though I suspect in this close proximity, he could keep her from teleporting, or get dragged along by accident.

"-I'd have thought that she'd take the opportunity to re-evaluate."

Shining Armour glances awkwardly at me as we head towards Cadence's office. "Are you sure you're alright carrying her?"
Much easier for the Renegade, given the wings can help keep her in place, plus his back is much broader in the first place. Shining would have to drape her like a cloak, and hold her with magic...

"Oh, pish. I'm partially responsible for introducing her to existential dread and recreational narcotics. The least I can-"

"What?"
Ketamine, Shining. Not really the safest of recreational narcotics, but at least she isn't likely to go on wild crime-sprees or manic episodes while under its effects...

"Think.. Twilight mentioned it…"
It was hilarious, if concerning. Reminded me of the Van Helsing autopsy scene from 'Dracula: Dead and Loving it.' "Oh, Professor! Ten out of Ten!"

Yes, give the inexperienced and emotionally immature folks a vast increase of stamina, magical power and mobility. 😨 That won't be troublesome at all, especially when they start getting superiority complexes. Sunset's definitely not going to go along with that, no matter how much they offer her...

Hah! "Well that's got to be just about the most ironic thing ever."

He chuckles quietly. "I know. I'm glad that Cadence and Sunset are getting along now, but when we started dating Cadence told me a whole lot about the things Sunset used to do…"
They knew each other? I got the impression that Sunset predated Cadance by a generation or more... Then again, a generation could be a lot shorter in Equestria given pony development rates.

Ooh, that's sending a clear signal. Mostly along the lines of 'Get the fuck out!' 😒 I hope Sunset feels appropriate regret about that.

"Ah."

"And added red dye to her shampoo. And replaced her feather grooming oil with glue."
The dye thing is slightly amusing, if temporary. The oil thing is just nasty. That would take weeks to recover from with no flight, if things went poorly enough.

I frown. "Huh. That.. sounds like something that would have triggered Celestia to intervene."

"She did." He sighs. "But she treated it like a misjudged joke, rather than what it actually was. It did make Sunset ease up… Well, more pretend that Cadence didn't exist."
Ah. That would explain the misunderstanding of age gaps., then.

Oof, that would hit her right in the 'Why couldn't it have been me‽' button.

"And what sort of person would be afraid of something like that from someone as agreeable as Cadence?"

"Someone really insecure."
Right on target for Sunset, definitely.

"Yeah. See, you're thinking those are characteristics she used to have that she's grown out of."

"Actually, I was giving you the credit."
The Renegade has been something of a father figure for her, along with a reasonable authority figure.

Just because she is old and powerful does not mean she is smart. Or wise. Or all-knowing.

Oh, no, a fate worse than death. 😏

"I.. suppose I.. could see it happening." He blinks and shakes his head before knocking lightly on the door before us. "Okay, just let me explain that you're here first."

I nod. "Don't want to drive her to premature labour. Oh, quick question. How old is she?"
Not that old, surely. She was 'teenaged' during Twilight's youth, after all. Mature enough to be a responsible babysitter, but young enough to have a special handshake with a younger girl...

"Ah…" He frowns distractedly. "Actually, I-."

"Come in!"
For that matter, how old is Shining? Do Unicorns get older faster than Pegasi or Earth Ponies? Questions the show rarely delved into...

He shakes his head and pushes the door open just wide enough for him to enter.

Sinestro, do you have any experience with obstetrics?
A quick scan of the Canterlot library's section on pony medicine would give some insights.

I have a full medical database for every species the qwardians ever dissected, in addition to what I acquired from human data networks. I also worked with Lantern Brin on several occasions.

I was just wondering… You've never said anything about wanting to visit korugar, either in your universe or this one.
Well, Ringnestro is a personality simulation of Thaal Sinestro. It could well have been engineered in to not think about Korugar that way.

What would be the point? They rejected me. I can better achieve my objectives by working with you wherever you go.

What about sentiment?
Given that nearly all his emotions concerning Korugar are negative, I'd be surprised if he cared for it at all beyond 'I'll show them!' Even his lady love was an alien.

What about it?

I suppose. A moment later Shining Armour pushes open the door and beckons me inside. I trot in, smiling politely at the expectant mother. "Cadence! You're looking gravid today!"
Ah, that sense of humour. I'd be careful about messing with her in this state, given the potency of mood swings coupled with phenomenal magical power.

Because she really does. She's almost as round as a normal pony.

"Grayven." She waddles closer, pregnancy bulge wobbling. "I didn't realise that you were a doctor."
Now there's an image. 😏

"I'm not. I cheat. Sinestro?"

"Scan complete, Lantern Grayven. What would you like to know?"

Cadence and Shining Armour exchange a glance, and he's the one who replies. "Are they healthy?"
The most important question, certainly.

"I don't have a baseline-" A construct image of a late stage foal foetus appears, and I note the horn and wings at once. "-for an alicorn foal, but I can detect no deformities or distress."

Shining Armour blinks. "An..? Alicorn?"
Ooh, gender reveal as well, I would imagine. If they were paying attention, anyway.

That is a good point. Both Sunset reducing the cultural novelty of Alicornhood, and of both wife and daughter outliving Shining.

"I…" He glances at Cadence, who stares at him pointedly. "I guess?"

"Neat. I'll get her to pencil you in. Unless you'd rather have Twilight-" I twist my neck around to glance back at where Twilight is sleeping off her medically induced coma on my neck. "-do it?"
...Best not. Much as a doctor should never treat family, a wizard should never enchant bloodkin.

He considers her current disposition for a moment.

"No, that's… Fine."
Yeeeup.

Cadence stares at the construct for a moment, and then at her own swollen abdomen. "Do you have any advice?"

"Focus your magic training on earth pony magic for improved endurance and magic resistance. Oh, and get a hermitage built."

She frowns in puzzlement. "What..? For..?"
Invest in lots of magic-dampening enchantments and teleport containment, for sure. I'm sure the Renegade can help in that department.

Oh, that's just the worst possible concept: Infants with no conscious control of their magic... Given how strongly a child can feel things at that age... There was a 'Twilight Zone' episode with that sort of theme, right?

Her frown deepens. "Still…"

I throw up my wings in exasperation. "Alright, but if your foal blows up your capital and vaporises half of its population, don't come crying to me."
Not quite the canon result, but the Renegade is prone to mild exaggeration.

An infant Alicorn is likely to be quite chaotic, at least for the early years. They may need to invest in magic-dampening jewellery for the little one until she can handle herself better. And if Alicornhood tends to breed true, it's going to be a lot more common in the years to come as the first Alicorns start to consider parenthood...

So is that how the pony planet ends then? Once they hit a critical mass of baby Alicorns with phenomenal magic power and no control over it?
I'm imagining a foal version of The Breaking from the Wheel of Time, when the source of male magic was corrupted, and all male magic users were slowly driven insane and shattered civilisation and rearranged the world's geography.

Nope. As stated in Equestria Guise and in the official comic, they were there at the same time.

What about hiring discord as a babysitter? Could Q use his chaos magic to keep the surroundings safe from the baby?

I throw up my wings in exasperation. "Alright, but if your foal blows up your capital and vaporises half of its population, don't come crying to me."

The fact he wasn't on Earth Prime when season six came out makes this funnier because he's not that far off from what actually happened.

"Apparently, that's the dynamic they used to have in the orphanage where they grew up."

They grew up in an orphanage? What about their respective parents?

Edit: Starlight isn't an orphan.

Huh, so now we have the 40k psyker problem in MLP. Sure as hell didn't see that happening

Call up a Mathusian like Best Space Grandma Hinon and have her talk to the pony royalty about super powered reality warping babies. Paragon Paul dealt with the guardians Training Wheels Green Ring trials, and had it explained to him, I'm sure the pony's could use some of that wisdom, and Renegade Hinon could use the vacation.

Thank you, corrected.

Flutty Heart isn't a reality warper. Just just has unusually powerful earth pony, pegasus pony and unicorn magic. And honestly, it was only her unicorn magic which caused problems.
