With This Ring (Young Justice SI) (Thread Fourteen)

Okay, don't mention the Eloi, but try and makes the same point with a little more politeness.

"And there are any number of other ways to empower individuals-. Or-. Rather, ways for individuals to empower themselves. The Danner Formula can be mass produced; I know LexCorp was doing some work on it. During the Sheeda Invasion… Okay, Sheeda Highborn could beat Danner enhanciles, but their regular soldiers would have died en masse. Anti-Life? People who'd achieved enlightenment flat out weren't affected by it. I think… It's not just a matter of 'we could do more', now. It's us getting smashed flat if we hold back. It we don't push ourselves a heck of a lot harder than we have been. And… We can't afford that."
'make'
'If'

Can the Danner formula actually be mass produced?

My understanding is that it was determined to be alchemical in nature, meaning a type of magic. I thought magic had to involve some kind of conscious mind/soul at some point, or mystically active ingredients, or something. An alchemist (or just chemist) mixing ingredients in a lab, sure. A giant factory that turns out vials by the thousands per hours with an automated injection process? Would that... work?

To be fair, stamping out warding runes seems to work, presumably because the symbols themselves have some kind of power. The Danner formula is producing a much more powerful effect, though.

These three should be "part".
Unless it's like how tge title for Invincible shows up.
"were so"
Thank you, corrected.
@Mr Zoat Does Mr. Atom still want to be president?
He wants to rule the universe. President fo the United States is a lower but more achieveable goal.
Is he campaigning now that he's on the League and Knight is polling poorly?
As Jonathan Barnes explained it, he can run for the office, but he can't actually take it up until he's at least 35.
Can the Danner formula actually be mass produced?
Yes. Easily.

The original Danner Formula was made at the end of the 19th century, by someone with a background in chemistry. A high school student could make it as a science project.

"I haven't seen much of him. I've.. been busy actually fixing things. F.E.M.A. dropped some cheese off at some point… Which was nice of them. But otherwise, no one."

"Do you think that F.E.M.A. should be doing more?"

A minor nitpick, but since you like to write dialogue phonetically, I'm assuming that "F.E.M.A." instead of FEMA means that they're spelling out the letters.

Maybe Paul would do that, if he's only ever seen it written before or that's what he considers proper, but in American English, FEMA is always treated as an acronym (i.e., pronounced like a word, like NATO) vs. an initialism (i.e., pronounced a letter at a time, like BBC).

Huuuuh.

You're right of course, but I'm wondering how far back I'd have to go to be consistent. Or I could just leave it, because I think everyone was reading it as 'rhymes with henna' rather than 'eff eee em ay'.

No, that was Vidor. Beating Conquest would be a much bigger deal, and Anissa wouldn't have approached him.
Wait, I'm a little confused. I get that beating Conquest would be a huge deal, at that point in time he's easily the 3rd strongest Viltrumite (Assuming first Thragg, second Nolan) and the Empire's chosen problem solver for insane situations.

Obviously Invincible!Paul deafeating him would be a huge upset and cause mass noise in the Empire, but why would that lead to Anissa not approaching Paul at all? If I remember correctly wasn't the whole Vidor fight only done because Anissa was doubting Paul's worthiness as a mate despite being given orders to mate with him and the Vidor fight was only done to disprove those doubts?

With how much Viltrumites value strength and combat prowess, wouldn't successfully defeating the third strongest viltrimute in the Empire actually make Paul even more an attractive prospect as mate then beating Vidor would? I don't get why that would scare Anissa away when defeating Vidor is what convinced her to actually give Paul a chance.

I mean, Canon Mark beating Conquest certainly didn't scare the rest of the Empire away from earth either in show or comics. And it definitely didn't stop Anissa from gaining her own special brand of twisted attraction towards Mark later… and acting on it too.

He means that Anissa wouldn't have approached conquest to request a fight to prove the SI's worth. Paul could potentially fight (or at least survive) and Vidor. There would be (in Anissa's mind) no chance of him surviving conquest, so she wouldn't bother approaching him to ask for a fight

No, it rhymes with 'schema' and 'Lima'.
Potato potato.

Ah, no. Anissa wouldn't have approached Conquest.

If the SI had beaten Conquest, then he'd have had a little accident. It's not like they spared the rognarr because they impressed them. Invincible beating Conquest is far more acceptable to the viltrumites. Strength is only good when it's not shared by too many people.

Close. Conquest wasn't joking about the other viltrumites being afraid of him.

Nolan is much weaker than Conquest.

Because she most likely would have been afraid of him.

Also this.

Remember that Viltrumites are more or less space Nazis.

Invincible leads the way towards the city centre. I can easily track the two Invincible-variants who are in the area, but given the speed they can move it's more efficient to bring them to us than to pursue them. The local Invincible occasionally glances at him, but for the most part he keeps on the lookout.

"Hey, Lantern." Invincible glances back. "Are you recording this for Anissa?"

Local Invincible and Atom Eve both give me a slightly puzzled look as I nod.

"I haven't done anything that would interest her yet, but I am recording."

Eve frowns. "What do you mean, 'interest her'?"

"Short version? We're married, she's pregnant with my child and she-" Local Invincible stops flying for a moment, staring at me. "-likes it when I make a display of strength." … "Likes it a lot, actually."

Local Invincible moves a little closer to me. "Is that why you sided with the Viltrum Empire?"

"No, I just sort of fell into that. When I got my powers I thought the G.D.A. looked too dodgy to sign up with, and then… The conquest happened. I started working on reconstruction, and… Coming to terms with the Empire made the occupation less onerous than it might otherwise have been."

"Don't do yourself down, buddy." Invincible looks back, smiling. "You're the reason Europe hasn't had.. like a.. cholera outbreak or something." He makes eye contact with our two temporary allies. "This guy knows more about Viltrumite Empire building standards than Dad does. He's saved a lot of lives. Earth would be a better place if more people were like him."

That's the most effusive praise I've ever had from him. Though I suppose that there aren't many situations where we're with someone friendly who isn't another viltrumite or… Our Atom Eve.

"You're very kind." Scan. "Incoming."

"Hey!" An Invincible with a… Bandana-mask thing, flies down from the top of one of the taller buildings. "This city's taken!"

Local Invincible clenches his fists, whereas Invincible looks disappointed. "Oh. You."

Bandana face floats closer. "What the fuck did you just say to me?"

"I remember the one of us wearing Dad's costume. The guy with the scars. The guy in Dad's old costume. The guy with the Mohawk. But you were just kind of there. I mean, what do I even call you? Bandana-face? Potty-mouth?"

"Fuck you! Get the fuck out of my city before I throw your generic bitch-ass out!"

"'Generic'? Okay, slava Ukraine, I'm the only one who actually had a friend to bring along." I raise my right hand and wave. "Actually…" He turns his head towards me. "Anissa likes it when you fight people, right?"

"She is appreciative, yes."

"Hey! Pay-" Bandana face takes a swing at him, but he just viffs out of the way. "-attention!"

"You can still have sex while she's pregnant?"

"Humans can and viltrumites are a good deal tougher than humans. There isn't any data on human male female viltrumite pairings."

Not that that's stopped her when the hormones hit and she can't deal with them by beating someone to death. On the plus side, I've gotten very good at physical ring reinforcement.

"Then you can handle this one."

Bandana Invincible cranes his neck forwards. "The fuck you say?"

I smile politely. "He wants me to kill you for the erotic titillation of my wife." I thrust my right arm out to the side and take an x-ionised sword out of subspace. "Die proudly, knowing that you have served a higher purpose in death than you ever did in life."

Accelerated perception.

"I'm-"

He drops into a diving position, lunging at me.

"-gunna-"

His flight speed is a little lower than what Invincible can do when he really makes an effort, but I'm not sure whether that's because his abilities are less developed or because he's holding back in case one of the Invincibles or Atom Eve decide to get involved. Fists clenched because he wants to hit me, rather than drag things out or capture me.

It's a relatively simple matter to dodge to the side, sword extending to cut into his side.

"Ow!"

Bandana Invincible twists in the air, right hand going to the shallow cut in his side. His posture suggests that he's more surprised than pained.

"How did-?"

I dart forward, shoving a construct oxygen mask under his bandana and sending a blast of high-pressure chlorine into his-

He waves his hand to disrupt the construct while darting backwards in the air.

-lungs.

"What was that supposed to do? I can hold my breath for-ug-hurr!"

He coughs yellow as the chlorine starts blistering his lungs from the inside. But it's obvious already that it's not going to be enough to disable him, let alone kill him. He coughs twice more, then takes a deep breath. And then spits out a mouthful of blood. And then-.

This time he's faster. I barely see him coming. But I do, and I dodge to the side faster than he can swing his fist. And again as he spins and tries to kick me then forwards and slash!

The sword pierces his side, cuts through to his spine and then sticks-. How? It shouldn't-.

Bandana face grabs my arm, coughing more blood against the inside of his mask.

"Got your-"

Sever arm, needle gun.

"-arm?" He looks down at the severed limb as I back away. "Hey, it's no fun if you maim yourself!"

Fire.

X-ionised needles punch through both eyes and jam themselves into his brain.

"Dagh!"

The issue is that viltrumites aren't just tough, they're resilient too. The sort of brain injury I just did to him would kill any human, but his eye sockets are barely bleeding and he's still flying. Alright, he's thrashing about and… Trying to use my arm as a bludgeoning tool?

"A-ahhgh!"

Slightly more blood coming out now, because the needles haven't come out and they're still pretty sharp. Not sure why the sword didn't just go through him. Perhaps their toughness is more to do with some sort of energy field? Or..? Super-elasticity of some sort?

I send a filament to the sword and take hold of it with a construct right hand. Then fly closer, aim and swing.

This time his body falls, his head following a moment later.

"Atom Eve. We appear to have similar power sets." I recreate my arm, then armour it. "Would you like to take the next one?"

That should be removed.

Now I wish we got Atom Eve's POV because I'm interested in what she thinks of OL, especially as she could theoretically do some of the things he can.

Damn, murdered him before the fight even started.

I think it's something about their powers being affected by their conscious direction, so if they're surprised or neurologically stunned by an attack it works slightly better, attacks that they viscerally assume should hurt them have a decent chance of doing at least a little damage even if they're below the usual energy threshold that's required, And their toughness comes from manipulation of all their atoms, so they can probably instinctively clamp down on the edges of a cutting blade(it might work better if he could coat it in something zero-friction).

Since she can't be here herself, having to take it easy being pregnant and all. Have to wonder how much that impairs her, though having a hybrid child probably requires her to be more careful about things. Something the male Viltrumites don't have to worry about, much to her presumed frustration...

Local Invincible and Atom Eve both give me a slightly puzzled look as I nod.

"I haven't done anything that would interest her yet, but I am recording."

Eve frowns. "What do you mean, 'interest her'?"
Ooh, she likes seeing her man kick ass and take names, does she? I fear for the Lantern's pelvis.

"Short version? We're married, she's pregnant with my child and she-" Local Invincible stops flying for a moment, staring at me. "-likes it when I make a display of strength." … "Likes it a lot, actually."

And Eve is probably going '...Ewww..." inside, while local Mark is simply setting that aside to think about never.

"No, I just sort of fell into that. When I got my powers I thought the G.D.A. looked too dodgy to sign up with, and then… The conquest happened. I started working on reconstruction, and… Coming to terms with the Empire made the occupation less onerous than it might otherwise have been."
...And it turns out it was dodgy. At least towards anyone who chooses to wear funny costumes and run around with superpowers.

"Don't do yourself down, buddy." Invincible looks back, smiling. "You're the reason Europe hasn't had.. like a.. cholera outbreak or something." He makes eye contact with our two temporary allies. "This guy knows more about Viltrumite Empire building standards than Dad does. He's saves a lot of lives. Earth would be a better place if more people were like him."
...Man, any more glazing and he'd be a donut. But he's doing good work by keeping humanity alive, whatever the price...

That's the most effusive praise I've ever had from him. Though I suppose that there aren't many situations where we're with someone friendly who isn't another viltrumite or… Our Atom Eve.

"You're very kind." Scan. "Incoming."
I suspect that doesn't include a lot of humanity, too, given his reputation amongst them...

"Hey!" An Invincible with a… Bandana-mask thing, flies down from the top of one of the taller buildings. "This city's taken!"

Local Invincible clenches his fists, whereas Invincible looks disappointed. "Oh. You."
Man, all he needs is some metal-band clothing and pouches and he's embodying 90's Image Comics superhero style.

Oh, look, he's even got the edgy-teen profanity down pat.

Man, now that is an insult. He's basically suggesting that he's not even going to waste his time fighting him himself.

"She is appreciative, yes."

"Hey! Pay-" Bandana face takes a swing at him, but he just viffs out of the way. "-attention!"
Bet he's had plenty of practice in sparring with Viltrumites.

"You can still have sex while she's pregnant?"

"Humans can and viltrumites are a good deal tougher than humans. There isn't any data on human male female viltrumite pairings."
At least the Lantern is contributing to the cause of science.

Not that that's stopped her when the hormones hit and she can't deal with them by beating someone to death. On the plus side, I've gotten very good at physical ring reinforcement.

"Then you can handle this one."
Heh. No death by Snu-snu for him. Unless he loses focus, but as long as his brain is still synced to his Ring, that's not an issue anyway. And Anissa probably enjoys the sounds of shattering bones.

Oof! Good thing he's about to die, or he'd need viltrumite-tier healing to recover form that burn. Also, nice pose.

Accelerated perception.

"I'm-"

He drops into a diving position, lunging at me.

"-gunna-"
Ah, wonder if he's faster than viltrumites or not?

His flight speed is a little lower than what Invincible can do when he really makes an effort, but I'm not sure whether that's because his abilities are less developed or because he's holding back in case one of the Invincibles or Atom Eve decide to get involved. Fists clenched because he wants to hit me, rather than drag things out or capture me.
Or he's well and truly underestimating you because he steamrolled the other humans he fought.

It's a relatively simple matter to dodge to the side, sword extending to cut into his side.

"Ow!"
Hell, if you really wanted to take the chance, you could have just held the blade upright and sliced him in half...

Bandana Invincible twists in the air, right hand going to the shallow cut in his side. His posture suggests that he's more surprised than pained.

"How did-?"
...Or not. I guess he's made of sterner stuff, if a literally monomolecular blade didn't cleave him in twain.

I dart forward, shoving a construct oxygen mask under his bandana and sending a blast of high-pressure chlorine into his-

He waves his hand to disrupt the construct while darting backwards in the air.
Ooh, attacking one of the few weakness a viltrumite has. And while they can work around that, they do need to breathe sooner or later.

-lungs.

"What was that supposed to do? I can hold my breath for-ug-hurr!"
Good, because chlorine gas isn't pleasant.

He's learning you're actually a threat, yes. So no playing around. One problem with that...

The sword pierces his side, cuts through to his spine and then sticks-. How? It shouldn't-.

Bandana face grabs my arm, coughing more blood against the inside of his mask.
...This isn't a playground, it's a killing ground. Peculiar that he's that tough. Maybe viltrumites harden in response to physical damage? Nanomachines, son!

"Got your-"

Sever arm, needle gun.

"-arm?" He looks down at the severed limb as I back away. "Hey, it's no fun if you maim yourself!"
"So shove it up your ass!" Such a Hellsing Abridged moment.

Fire.

X-ionised needles punch through both eyes and jam themselves into his brain.
Ow. Right down the optic nerve!

"Dagh!"

The issue is that viltrumites aren't just tough, they're resilient too. The sort of brain injury I just did to him would kill any human, but his eye sockets are barely bleeding and he's still flying. Alright, he's thrashing about and… Trying to use my arm as a bludgeoning tool?
Decentralised neural functionality, probably.

"A-ahhgh!"

Slightly more blood coming out now, because the needles haven't come out and they're still pretty sharp. Not sure why the sword didn't just go through him. Perhaps their toughness is more to do with some sort of energy field? Or..? Super-elasticity of some sort?
Gotta wonder what the locals are thinking watching this guy slowly dismantle someone capable of nearly killing a city.

I send a filament to the sword and take hold of it with a construct right hand. Then fly closer, aim and swing.

This time his body falls, his head following a moment later.

"Atom Eve. We appear to have similar power sets." I recreate my arm, then armour it. "Would you like to take the next one?"
I mean, she would probably be fine passing.

Well, that was an impressive level of casual disregard for your own structural integrity and a downright casual approach to someone that could pulp him if he made a single mistake. Like fighting a FromSoft boss... When you know the mechanics inside out. Still, he won and took down another Invincible alternate. Only another half-dozen or so to go... 😏

Wow. Having read the chapter, I just realized I didn't even consider him sharing the blueprints for any of his various weapons with Eve. Egg on my face.

Because, well, that's actually incredibly useful isn't it? Eve could now be the premier weapon maker of shit that can meaningfully harm a Viltrumite.

"Short version? We're married, she's pregnant with my child and she-" Local Invincible stops flying for a moment, staring at me. "-likes it when I make a display of strength." … "Likes it a lot, actually."
And she isn't even unusual by the standards the messed up people the SIs have shacked up with.
Or messed up cultures he has acclimatised to.

That's the most effusive praise I've ever had from him. Though I suppose that there aren't many situations where we're with someone friendly who isn't another viltrumite or… Our Atom Eve.
Mark is after all still a very insecure teen under all the blood, trauma and super powers. He really does want some friends he can just hang with.

The closest I can think of is the one who has a thing with Evil-Lyn.
There's the red lantern version in the Teen Titans universe who went on murder dates with... Whoever it was he was dating. Blackfire, maybe? It's been a while. And the Warhammer Fantasy one who was dating someone high up in one of the darker factions.

Unfortunately the paragon just settled for the boring assassin instead of taking the opportunity to make things official with the Spider Queen (OLxSpider Queen OTP)
